THE CGM ET As people pass Granby at night and see lights burning, they probably suppose that a basketball game is going on or that the school is being cleaned for the next day s classes. Many of the Comet staff members wish this were true., for in hearing distance of the thuds of balls and yells of spectators, Miss Wilshin and part of her mob desperately design pages and choose pictures. Why all these night meetings? The dead- line must be met. Seniors, sophomores, juniors, all work together to produce a book that already has the reputation of being radically dilferent. This is all the compensation needed' for the hard work, long hours, and arousing disputes that occur. Hanna, Q THE STAFF HARD AT WORK The poor, tired stall hard at work. With an en- gaging smile, and a sparkle in her eye, Mrs. Eleanor Walden, our able director and pal, ever desirous of artistic perfection, inspires the chorus. ' The boys' quartet, girls' sextette, vested choir, and the madrigal 'group are smaller groups within the eighty-voice chorus. -...v -3 ge- it Singing for the student body, civic or- ganizations, and church groups are a few of their many pleasures. The officers are: Ben Tench, president, Marie Bogart, secretary, Ruth Anne White, assistant secretary, Margaret White, treas- urer, and Dot Nowlan and Lee Dougherty, historians. Senior Chorus The repertoire of the Granby Girls' Sex- tette, quite a varied one, includes numbers from Bach to Gershwin. The songs are chosen by the students who were selected for their compatibility, personality, blend of voices, and talent. The Boys' Quartet, specializing in bar- ber shop songs, has given its time and talent for dances, civic clubs, and school programs. The quartet is a voluntary group with Mrs. Elliott as leader. is The Madrigal Singers know that when voices blend, hearts blend, too, and that there is a closeness that holds Madrigal Singers fast. The special charm of their sixteenth century songs pleases the singers as well as the listeners. The Junior Chorus sings for assembly and gives a number of performances throughout spring. QUILL A D SCRCDLL The Quill and Scroll Society, under the sponsorship of Miss Mary Cornelia Stahr, is a national honorary society for highschool writers. To be eligible for membership in this club a student must accomplish out- standing writing for either the school news- paper or the school annual. New members are initiated into the club by an impressive candlelight service. During the year the members write for various literary magazines and contests. Club members are frequently recipients of these competitive honors. Meetings of the Quill and Scroll are characterized by visits of local literary figures and by a study of the members' achievements. Last August they looked like this: H un... FOOTBALL TEAMS Climaxing the 1951 football season, the Blue Comets thumped Maury, 20-13, in the season's final. This is the first time in three years that a Granby aggregation has beaten its city rival. Granby had a small squad, as football teams go, but what they lacked in size they made up in spirit. Several incidents made this football season enjoyable, such as Ben Tench s losing battle with the belt of his pants. ' For the first time in a num- ber of years a large group of spirited stu- dents, led by the cheerleaders, followed the team to most of the games. Although the record shows that Granby's season wasn't too successful, the spirit of the students and team-like playing of the Blue Comets was something of which to be proud. Frank Waff, Frank Brinn, Billy Dicker- son, Billy VVilson, and Billy Tilling played excellent football throughout the year. They received recognition for this when selected for the all-state teams. Topping the scorers for the Comets were Mickey Simpson, Billy Dickerson, and Billy Tilling. In an undefeated season, the .l.V.'s sported a fighting team. The main impres- sion the J.V.'s left on the students was the fact that even though they were sparked by several stars, they played like a team, not eleven men. The team played the rough, sportsmanlike football that we can be proud of. For the first time in Granby's history, the .l.V.'s went undefeated. Rolling over three opponents and tying a fourth, the J.V.'s vied for top gridiron honors with the varsity, who won an upset victory over Maury. Although the baby Blue Comets played with teamlike precision, they produced several outstanding players in Jim Snooks, the top scorer, J oe Leafe, Porgie Turner, John- Biggs, and Jerry Van Story. Instead of exclusively em- ploying fast breaks for goals, they set up play patterns and worked them through. A foul or a lucky shot provided either the margin of victory or of defeat in many games the Comets played. It seems that the basketeers received more than their share of had breaks. Oh, well i- The Junior Varsity basketball team had an unusually good season. Using a fast break or a set-up play., depending upon the situa- tion, the little Comets blazed through its schedule with ease. Playing heads-up ball the whole year, they capitalized on every possible break. An excellent starting team as well as a strong bench wore down their op- ponents with unceasing fight and speed. Play- ing on the .l.V. s provides valuable experience for the boys who will later be the mainstays on the varsity teams of the future.
