The adop- tion of Kostas, a Greek war orphan, has been the main activity this year. Through generous contributions of the students, we have been able to make life a little happier and more secure for our overseas protege. The purpose of this organiza- tion is to promote student wel- fare, leadership, and participa- tion in the function of civic- school life. Student friendship and competition has been fur- thered between Granby and Maury this year through the initiation of Maugf-Granby Day. Have you wondered where your homeroom representatives disappeared to each Monday morning? Plans to make our school a more perfect one have been formulated sessions. Presided over by Vice-Presi- dent Kenneth Kledzik, the House func- tions similarly to our national legisla- tive House. Through taking part in the government of our school, each student becomes aware of his responsibility toward society. We trust that this civic experience will be of great value to the Citizens of tomorrow. at these Monday N 3 X 'Q N , i Support your ca1zdi11'ale! Continuing their winning ways, GHS drubbed Norview,s Pilots, 52-27. With Ralph Halstead bucketing 14 points, the Comets won their fourth conference victory, taking Warwick 54-42. Sharpshooting Jessel Curry sparked Wilson's Presidents to a 54-36 rout over Granby on the President's hardwood. Little Carlos Romubio led Don Griffin's cagers to a 43-36 victory over the john Marshall justices. Dumping in 19 points, Buddy Ballard paced Newport News, Typhoons to a 51-36 plastering of GHS. Snapping a six game losing streak, Mauryis Com- modores squeezed by the Comets 32-31 in a thrilling game played at the Arena. Gaining revenge for an earlier loss, Hampton edged Granby 28-26. Playing their third game without the services of Ben Tench and Bobby Spruell, Granby bowed to Wilson 46-39. Granby lost its fourth game as Cradock subdued the Comet quint 43-38. Coming to life again, Granby ran roughshod over a hapless Norview team, 54-41. With big Mike Niegro pointing the way, GHS upset Newport News 49-47. To round out the team, there were newcomers Armand Taylor, Ernest Piercy, and Gilbert Burroughs. Eichelberger, Knotts, Dickerson, and Piercy went through the regular season undefeated. On Dec. 14, Granby opened the 1950-51 season by trouncing Norview 38-11. One week later, they outclassed the Ocean View Community Center Team 34-16. After the Christmas Holiday, Granby continued its winning ways with a 17-5 decision against Maury on Jan. 11. The following night, Cradock was humbled 43-5. Granby's next victim, the Ocean View Community Center, bowed 38-5 on the night ofjan. 17. The beginning of the second half of the season found Granby winning its sixth straight victory 36-11 over Norview on jan. 26. Then on Feb. 2, Granby scored an outstanding victory. Maury was whitewashed 48-0. Finding the going too easy against local high schools, Granby traveled to Lexington to defeat the Wash- ington and Lee Frosh 22-6. The following evening, Feb. 10, Coach Martin's grapplers mastered the V. M. I. freshmen 21-10. Next, a powerful Roanoke team was overcome 35-12. On Feb. 17, V. P. I. furnished Granby with its eleventh victory by bowing to the Martinmen 24-6. Granby won its third Virginia State Interscholastic Tournament crown by taking 50 points. The tournament was held in Char- lottesville, Feb. 26 and 27. The following week, Granby finished first with 61 points to win the State A. A. U. Tournament for the third consecutive year. Five Granby boys won State A. A. U. titles. Wax ii a lakfdoum? Wimmin On hand for the opening of the 1951 Swimming Season were practically all of last year's team. Coach Chandler had several lettermen back including State Backstroke Champion, Kenny Kledzik, whose 118.4 is a state recordg Fred Griffith, Granby's 200 yard champion, Glenn Heaton, Granby's 100 yard free-style record holder, jack Hardy, 200 yard free-style record holder, Phil Light, Granby's diving champion. Several newcomers who made the merman squad were: Dave Mitchell, breast-stroke, whose 1215.6 is a Granby recordg Putt Storrs, Individual Medley Champion of Granby 3 and Tony Bargamin, 50 yard breast-stroke. With the exception of Glenn Heaton, all of these boys will be returning next year. Granby had a mediocre season this year winning only two out of the eight meets in which it participated. In the opening meet, Coach Chandleris charges were defeated by the William and Mary Division Squad 44-22. Next, a strong Raleigh, N. C., tank-team outswam Granby 47-18. Once more Granby mermen found it tough going as they lost to the Richmond Y. M. C. A. by 27 points, 47-20. Granby chalked up its first victory by edging Augusta Military Academy 40-35. The Richmond Y. M. C. A. swimmers won their second victory over the GHS team 40-35. Granby got its second win of the season by defeating the N. C. State Frosh team 36-30. Traveling to Raleigh, N. C., Chandler's mermen absorbed a 51-24 licking from Needam-Broughton High School. Granby closed its season by going to Virginia Inter- scholastic Meet at Charlottesville. There Kenny Kledzik, Glenn Heaton, and Fred Grifiith all placed in in their events and teamed up with Tony Bargamin to take third in the 200 yard free-style relay. This year will find Granby fielding a team with only two lettermen returning. Coach Dixie Moore has a tough problem in building a squad around fielder, Billy Tydnallg and pitcher, Bubba West. Veteran Dickie Jennings is expected to be of great help this year in supplying hitting power. There are several newcomers who will be very useful. Among these are: pitcher, jimmy Knotts, infielders, Walter Forbes, Ralph Halstead, and Phil Hobson, out- fielders, Dick Boner and joe Porter, and catchers, Billy Tilling, Russell Gray, and 'Eddie Eichelberger. Last year's record was rather disappointing, three wins out of thirteen games. Opening the season, Granby was defeated by a strong Wilson nine, 9-2. Next, john Marshall hung a 12-9 defeat on GHS. The squad got -its first victory by tripping Cradock 10-6. Wilson again took Granby's measure with a 10-1 shellacing over the Comets. Norview's Pilots edged Coach M0orc's diamondcrs 3-1 on our home Field. Two days later, Maury gave the Comets their third straight defeat 17-4. Bouncing back from her losing streak, Granby knocked Cradock out of the park 24-6. Hampton's Crabbers took a close game from GHS 6-5. Granby's third and last victory of the season came by trouncing Norview 8-1. In Richmond, Granby was subdued by John Marshall 6-5g in Newport News, 13-6. Once more Wilson's Presidents continued their domination over the GHS squad by slaughtering them 15-1. Granbyis final game of the seaon was lost to Norview by forfeit C9-OD after Coach Moore and some of his charges were banished from the playing field. All lhc way, Bzzbbuf ,-v Incl that lrg' Despite the loss of such stalwarts as Johnny Mapp and jim Bain, Granbyis 1951 track squad will be fairly well balanced. Harriers returning from last yearis squad are distance men, Chuck Hayes, Billy Taylor, james Barbee, and Percy Pattersong middle distance man, Fritz Firingg hurdlers, Ralph Major and Eddie Cunningham, and high jumpers, Willie DeLara and Jerry Van- Story. Granbyis main weakness is a lack of field events men. Granby opened its 1950 season April 1 by trouncing Warwick 74M to 34M. Little John Mapp paced the Comet harriers with 20 points. The following Saturday, Newport News' Ashton Violette captured 3 firsts as the Typhoon lashed GHS 73 to 40. Once again Mapp led the Granby cinder men with 15 points. Norview, being crushed 106 to 7, was Granby's second victory. Mapp with 26 and Bain with 9 points dominated the Comet scoring parade. Although John Mapp achieved 23 points, a well balanced Wilson track team defeated Granby's harricrs 70 to 43 on April 21. April 22 found Granby traveling to Williamsburg for the Tidewater Meet. Richmondis john Marshall was the victor in the meet while Granby with 125 points placed sixth. The Eastern District Meet on May 6 was won by Newport News. Granby with IZMZ points came in Hfth. On May 13, in one of the most exciting meets in the Granby-Maury track history, an underdog Comet Track Team upset Maury 59-54. Jim Bain was the hero of the meet as he overcame Maury's Tommy Gardner in the final lap ofthe mile relay. On May 19 and 20 GHS was once again in Williamsburg for the State Meet, this time placing eighth. Firing wins the Ccntzny Dash!
