Representatives of the organization came to school with the new students to greet them, make them feel at home, and to acquaint them with the Granby spirit. From that time on the officers and representatives have kept busy promoting student activities and the welfare of our school. After a very successful and enjoyable dance, funds were available for enclosing a student activity bulletin board. As another service our organization has assumed complete responsibility for the sale of student bus tickets. A continuous effort of this group has been to encourage good citizenship in the use of school property. There have been skits, quiz programs, cross word puzzles and songs, to say nothing of trips to Latin Amer- ica via the movies or conducted by visitors to Granby, Breaking the gaily decorated pinatas and the singing of carols have become traditional in room 105, where Christmas is celebrated in true Mexican style. In April the Pan American spirit reached its culmination in the banquet to which came students from neighboring schools, officials of the school system, and Latin American Consuls and their wives. Nor will we forget the lovely melody of Adios Mariquita Lindau in the all Spanish movie with Tito Guizar playing the title role. These are just a few of the many activities carried on by the Student Pan American League of Granby, which is a member of the international league of Spanish speak- ing students in the Americas. 1731 Le Cerele Franeai -Les Cadet Franeai lst Raw: 2nd Rath: 3m' Row. dlh Row: f .74 LE CERCLE FRANCAIS EI.IzARETI-I EICHELBERGILR, MARGARliT MATI'l'lEWS, DOROTIIY Pnwmzs, MAEVE KlI'I', ANNIETTIE YAIfIfEY, NIARIAN GATl.EY, BETTY BRINKLEY, PIERMAN BELL, BARBARA PEACOCK, KAY EIJSALI., ANNE SMITH, HARYEY BIIRDEN NANCY WINN, BEVERLY WVARREN, MONA LEo, MARY BALDNVIN, SIIIRLEY McGINNIs, XIOLA BURKWALL, PAT TURNER, JACKIE GALE, RAY!! At the bi-weekly meetings programs are arranged, ranging from collaborations with the art department in lectures on French art to skits in French by members of the club. Regular correspondences are maintained with students of English in France. Les Cadets, a newly-formed branch of the club, consists of first-year French students who will graduate into Le Cercle during their second and third years. They are included within the picture. Basketball Granby opened its '48-349 basketball season by defeating Cradock 44 to 24. jack johnson, the only veteran from last year's squad, led the in- experienced quint in their first game. Scoring 18 points, Lefty Driesell was outstand- ing for the Green Comets in a 50 to 29 victory over the Warwick Farmers. Wfith Driesell leading, the Comets came back in the third quarter to defeat the Hopewell Blue Devils 45 to 37. Granby turned back the Hampton invaders 42 to 37 on our home court. Art Prunier was top man with 12 points, while Foxwell and Driesell followed with 11 and 10 respectively. In their fifth straight triumph, Granby's Five trounced Norview 45 to 24. Prunier made 13 points for high scoring honors of the night. The Lynchburg Hilltoppers retained their un- defeated record by downing the Comets 46 to 37. Mauryls Commodores eclipsed the lighting Blue Comets 37 to 36 in a closely contested battle. A Comet rally in the last period fell short at the iinal gun. Foxwell's last second field goal gave the Comets a 31-29 upset victory over Wilson on the Presi- dentis hardwood. John Marshall, the defending state champions, defeated Granby 44 to 39 in a non-conference tilt. Driesell contributed 13 points for the Comet cause while Marshall's Gentry was held to 11. Ears McDearmon in his last High School game paced the Comets in a 46 to 32 win over the New- port News Five. The following week the fast Granby quint traveled to the Peninsula to win an easy game from Hampton, 40 to 29. Granby bowed to Lynchburg 36 to 35 after giving the undefeated quint their hardest battle of the season. .4rtyboafv's ball in john Marshall game. Basketball With much difficulty the Blue Comets kept a Wlilson rally within bounds ending the game with a 38 to 36 lead. Although the Comets were on the Cradock hardwood, they succeeded in conquering the Admirals 53 to 26 with Art Prunicr earning 17 points and Driesell following with 13. Coach Griffin cleared the bench of reserves in both junior Varsity and Varsity games in a double win over Norview. The V. beat the Little Pilots 31 to 25 and the Varsity won their 10th con- ference victory 52 to 35. Granby's inefficiency at the foul line cost them a defeat at the hands of the Newport News Typhoons, 31 to 27. Recovering from their setback, the Comets routed Hopewell 49 to 35 with Driesell contri- buting 14 points. Coach Griffin again cleared the bench of re- serves when the Blue Comets whipped Warwick 47 to 29. VVith their Paul Gentry making 30 points, John Marshall rallied in the second half to defeat Granby 62 to 45. Amid much confusion the Blue Comets, led by Driesell with 16 points, edged Maury 39 to 37 at the City Auditorium. In the Eastern District Playoff Granby bowed to the Typhoons 41 to 32. The first round of the State Basketball Tourna- ment saw the underdog Granby squad come from behind to edge john Marshall 45 to 44 in one of the most thrilling games ever played at the Arena. On the second night ofthe tournament George Washington High of Alexandria subdued a tired Granby quint, 49-26. Yes, it's over physically, but do you think we can forget it? It will always live on in our memories 3 and memories, after all, are sweeter than the actual happenings because we forget much of the trouble and hurt and remember only the good. Was there ever a nicer year than the one just passed? Of course, everything didn't turn out as well as we had wished, but if there weren't some disappointments the happiness would lose its brightness. Let us review some of the happen- ings in our year. And the people . . . weren't they super? It would be a shame not to recall some of the ones we know and the things of which they remind us. Remember? School started on Vfednesday, September 8, officially, but on Tuesday some people did come. They were the new students who had to register, the teachers who tried to make them feel welcome to the new experience of being Granby students, and a few old students who gave up part of this last vacation day to come and help the new ones find their way around this big and puzzling building. And then on September 8 came new and old students en masse to take up new subjects or old again. Some came reluctantly and some joyously. Perhaps the former were more numerous, for, after all, the summer was pretty nice, and school is pretty hard. Yet, who wasn't glad to see kids and teachers who were absent from our every- day summer life? Anyway, we left at midday, so it wasnit too bad. The next day we received our schedules. Remember? All over home room came various and odd sounds, from a cry of joy to a sob of despair, from a whee of delight to a strangled choking. Gads! Look who I have for math! Oh, I love her. She reads beautifullyf' She's a good egg, but brother, can she sling tests. These were student reactions, but let's not think the higher ups didnit have their thoughts, Oh my goodness, this boy will be a trialf' '4Thank heavens for her. At last I'll get a decent senior theme. You see, teachers are people too. Then for the first few days we laughed at the confused rats when, much embarrassed, they entered the wrong room. The days flew by, and soon football season came . . . Oh, the glory of it! . . . We gasped at Dickie jennings's bird-like passes, jimmy Brown's swivel-hipped line cracking, and LeRoy Carter's end runs. Yet we knew that without the whole team's spirit and help, we would certainly have been lost. The half time was made almost as good as the game by the memorable perform- ances of the drill team and the band. Do you remember the election day formation, the donkey, the elephant, the voting booth, and sending to Washington, D. C., to get a poster of President Truman? And when the majorettes voted, it was a strange coincidence to see that Betty Nairne had Wallace's ticket. Wonder if it stood for Henry or Dan? Then there was the formation celebrating the twenty-fifth year of WTAR when we formed a television set which showed a girl washing a Newport News sweater and scrubbing it into a Granby one, then a baseball game, and lastly, Sam Marks and Zenia Dimitrou's dance. And we can't forget the wonderful cheerleaders! Sis Atkinson and Dot Powers really worked hard to make it the best squad ever. CPlease turn to Page 1323 Congratulations from QQHL Q. Each student had made out his dayls schedule for his parents to follow. The night pupils , often breathless, entered classes tardy and wondered how the students could reach the rooms on time, Remember the beach party given by the Hi-Y the next clay? The girls certainly showed the boys how to play a hard game of football. No sissy touch stuff for them. No, they had to play tackle. Betty Lou Biggs, the flying scatback, was the star. Right before the big game there was a huge pep rally behind the school. Lots of fun and sore throats were had by all. Mr. Griffin gave a party for his fan club afterwards. Can we possibly forget the Thanksgiving Game? VVe might sometimes want to, but Maury won't let us. After all, we can't win all the time, and 7 games out of 10 isn't such a bad average! Finally came December 23 and oh! our sad faces when we realized that we had to stay away from school for two whole weeks! Could we stand it? We could! All too soon the holiday was over, and people dragged themselves back, weak in body, mind, and estate. Yet we wouldn't have missed Christmas with all its parties and dances if we had had chronic pneumonia. Of course, January brought exam worries. VVho could concentrate on the subjunctive tense anyway? Off we went therefore to the movies and drowned our sorrow in a bag of popcorn. Then came the fateful, hateful days and the hilarity that reigned that glorious Friday when all was done and finished. At last! Graduation time was here. The lovely processional, A'Pomp and Circumstanccn, rang through the halls more than once. Of course, this was only during the many practices. First came the prom with Granby's own Key-dets playing. The bright colored dresses of the girls contrasted strongly with the suave suits of the boys. The prom reminded one of the proverbial moth Hitting around the glowing candle. fPleasc turn to Page HU Compliments of Dr. Pepper fwsj Complinms of YODER 8: GORDON, Inc. We all glowed with pride at Elizabeth Eichelbergefs address and the awarding of the Citizenship Medal to Kilby Hodges. The play- let, '6You'll Never Walk Alonen, written by jean Hecht, was a beautiful dramatic presenta- tion with the nylon sails of a ship in the back- ground. At Charlottesville, our wrestling team won the state high school tournament which was the first ever held for wrestling. We had a Fine swimming team too. Of course, not all the meets were won, but the team made a nice record in view of the fact that this was our first year for the sport. Mud White was high point man with Bill Harper and Ronnie Kledzik runners up. Then baseball and track season made the young man's fancy lightly turn to love-of sports. Of the many Sundays in our memories, this one was outstanding. Graduation! The big event we had all so anxiously awaited. It was plain to be seen, on the night of commencement, that we were just a little nervous. As the strains of i'Pomp and Circumstances came rolling out, a hush fell over the audience. Then we, with our heads high and our shoulders unusually straight, marched in.
