'We stop to give thought to the loyal guides who set our feet firmly on the merry-go-round of fortune, who have protected us from the rough jostling of the crowds, and urged us on to greater feats of strength and skill. So, as we pause at the entrance to the bewildering fair of life, we, the Class of 1947, earnestly wish to express our love and gratitude to those who have done so much and have so seldom received recognition-Our Parents. , 1 ENTRANCE TO THE FAIRGROUNDS .III.-SWE lg IIIIIIII,-Exam IIISSSIQ .I-,IIIQ K II I, IYII I V. He collects, records, and turns in to the ollice money collected for such drives as the Junior Red Cross, Anti-Tuberculosis League, and Community Fund. He accepts subscriptions and pay- ment for the Spectator, and collects class dues. Tickets for football games and Comet shows are ordered and paid for through him. This year the meetings have been devoted to the study of the various phases and styles of news writing. By talks given by the members of the society and by exper- ienced journalists, and through general discussion, the essentials of news writing have been stressed. M R. VAN NOR'FWICK As the strains of school songs come to our ears, we usually recognize among the singers the harmonious tones of the Senior Chorus. One of the occasions when the Chorus appears most prominently is the Christmas play during which it usually offers both traditional and religious music in a setting that fills us with the reverent spirit of the season. Another high spot ofthe Chorus's calendar is the Comet Show in which the music is lighter but no less carefully prepared and presented. Weeks of work go into re- hearsal for this, but the results produce our hit shows. All during the school year, the Chorus carries Granby to those outside the school by appearing in church services, presenting programs in hospitals, and taking part in the state Music Festival. The remainder of the first half was all GRANBY, but the COMETS just seemed to lack the scoring punch. just after the second half opened, Ivanhoe M6Lf0f1bl0vkfB-C- C-'fkifk snatched down Boettcher's pass on the 31, but the COMETS were stopped, and CLIFTON took over on downs. However, CLIFTON couldn't gain and kicked. Gill, returning it to the 31, L1021 Football slipped and fell. A MUSTANG player crashed into Gill, and the gallant GRANBY back had to be carried from the field. The COMETS gained 15 yards on the unnecessary roughness penalty, pushed to the MUSTANGS, 30, where they were held for downs. During the remainder of the game the CLIFTON team had 12 downs inside GRANBY,S 10 yard line, but couldn't score. Their first attempt was crushed by Dick Harrison, who knocked down a 4th down pass in the end zone. The game was played under the arcs on Christmas night at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. LYNN received, and on the first play from scrimmage, fumbled. joe Baines recovered on the CLASSICAL 11 yard line, but CLASSICAL held for downs. After the LYNN team had moved to their 45 in 2 plays, Stobbs intercepted on the COMET 25. CLASSICAL again held, and Stobbs punted. Promptly, Henry Foiles pulled down Harry Agganis's pass on the LYNN 45. A pass from Stobbs to Gill was good for a first down on the 17. Lucas spun through center and took the ball to the 3, from where he bucked over. Foiles's placement was good. Early in the second quarter, LYNN marched 88 yards for their first T.D., and the conversion was made to even the count at 7-7. Larry Brown took the kick-off, and went 10 yards to the GRANBY 20. A pass from Stobbs to Ivanhoe, and the running of Brown and Skinner ate up 50 yards. Gill made a circus catch of Stobbs's pass on the 6 . LYNN CLASSICAL was set back to its one by penalty, and Brown bucked over for the score. A penalty gave the COMETS a second try for the extra point after the first one went wide and Foiles successfully converted. Shortly after, the half ended. Score, GRANBY 14 - CLASSICAL 7. Toward the end of the 3rd quarter, the COMETS elected to pass on a 4th down. Stobbs's pass to Gill was incomplete, and LYNN took over on the GRANBY 45. Warden madekit a first down on the 28, and Agganis passed to Jim Vagarkis in the end zone. Dooley kicked the extra point. GRANBY, tiring, came back fighting, and paced by Barney Gill, drove to their own 43. Stobbs then passed to Ivanhoe on the CLASSICAL 39. Agganis intercepted a Stobbs aerial on the 11 to halt the scoring threat. The NEW ENGLANDERS pushed to the COMET 25, but McLeod smeared Vagarkis for a 10 yard loss, and Agganis punted into the end zone. Stobbs' pass connected with Harvey Harrell on the 47, and after 3 more plays, all incomplete passes, the game was history. Final score, GRANBY 14 - CLASSICAL 21. l1031 1946 TAT First row, sz'tiz'ng.' Leading 17-0 at half-time, the Comets, sparked by Barney Gill, scored 29 points to crush Trinity in the second stanza. In a non-conference tilt, Granby whipped Hopewell 47-23. Except for the first point Ca foul shotj the Comets led all the way. Price, of the Blue Devils, was high scorer for the night with 11 points, while for Granby it was Gill with 8. The Comets next walloped their cross-town rivals, the Maury Commodores, 31-19. Dominating play the entire evening, the Comets played with the coolness of veterans. A large crowd at the city auditorium saw Chuck Stobbs rack up 15 points to become high scorer. Leading all the way, the Granby Comets won their fourth straight game by trouncing Hampton's Crabbers to the tune of 60-35. Stobbs again was pace-setter, with 15 points. 1 Thomas jefferson, 1946 State champs, were next to taste defeat at the hands of the Comets, 31- 17. Again it was Granby all the way. Gill and Stobbs led the white-clad Comets, with 10 points each. The Comets experienced little dimculty in trampling John Marshall, 55-24. The reserves played half the game in which Stobbs was high man with 15 points. Coach Don Griilinls smooth combine took to the Granby hardwood to whip Newport News Typhoon, 41-32. The Comets led at the close of every quarter. Stobbs led the eveningas scoring with 12 points. Granby's Comets fought oFf a determined Wilson bid in the final quarter, to defeat the Presidents, 32-24 at Portsmouth. Granby led all the way, despite the fact that Gallop out-scored Stobbs, 14-13. The Comets reached the halfway mark of the Eastern race unbeaten, by routing Norview, 58-29. The white-shirted Comets had little trouble, and the first team played only 2 quarters. Gill was high man with 14 markers. Paced by Chuck Stobbs's 11 points, the Comets started fast and turned in a 25-13 half-time ad- vantage, to hand John Marshall its eighth straight loss, 46-21. It was Granby all the way in the Capital City. The following evening the Comets captured their eleventh straight game by whipping T. J., 34-16. Granby's 20-3 intermission lead was just too much for the Richmond team. Stobbs again was high scorer, with 8 points. Granby's flashy Comets racked up another by whipping Hampton, 52-43. The Comets took an early lead and never trailed. McLeod of Granby and Mark of the Crabbers led the scoring with 18 and 15 points, respectively. The Comets romped over Holy Trinity, netting 52 markers to the Trinidadsl 18. Kulpan was top man in the one-sided contest, making 12 points. Granby smashed Norview' easily, for their fourteenth consecutive vic- tory, 62-30. Red Kulpan and Chuck Stobbs led the Comets, with 16 points apiece. Bar- neyis 15 points made him high man for the game. At Hopewell Chuck Stobbs, who made 21 points, led the Comets to an easy 81-34 win. The reserves, with the exception of Stobbs, played the majority of the game. The unbeaten Granby Cagers rang up their 17th straight victory against Newport News on the Typhoon court, 48-36. Newport News trailed by only 2 points at intermis- Smbbr bloclrx moz . . . Salem game sion, but the Comets turned on the steam in the second heat to easily outdistance the Connmen. Stephenson, N. N. center, led with 16 points, as Baines did the honors for the Comets, with 14. For the first time in two years Granby dropped an Eastern district game. The Maury Commodores defeated the Comets, 33-31. The game, a thriller, was tied 9 times, but in the final three minutes the Commodores took over, to win by 2 points. Barney Gill, Granby star, and Goodman of Maury, led with 11 points each. The Comet cagers took the Eastern district title by whipping Maury, 43-35, before 3,500 cheering fans. The Granby boys led all the way. Stobbs hit the hoops for 18 points to become high scorer. In the semi-final play-off for the State championship, the Comets, sporting their new silver uni- forms, beat Salem, 45-24. Top man for the afternoon was Granby's Chuck Stobbs. Granby easily defeated Alexandria High for the State Class I title, 58-33. The Comet Varsity scored practically at will, and c'Dog McLeod's control of the backboards made him top man with 20 points. In the first round of the Duke-Durham Southern High School Invitational Basketball Tourna- ment, Granby rnet and defeated Parker High, of Greenville, S. C., 52-35. Chuck Stobbs's three- quarter court swish shot just before the half ended broke the back of the opposition, and from there on in the Comets eoasted to an easy victory. The semi-finals saw the Comets win over New Hanover High, of Wilmington, N. C., by the score of 47-42. The Blue Streaks faced a taller team, but turned on the heat to take the game, which was a thriller. Stobbs hit the meshes for 19 points, one more than in the preceding game. Winning by the score of 52-39, the Granby boys won the tournament when they crushed Patter- son High, of Baltimore in the finals. It was Granby all the way in this contest, and Coach Griflin substituted freely in the final quarter. Baldwin, of Baltimore, sent 22 points through the hoops, as McLeod led the Comets' scoring with 19. Ltosl Basketball JUNIOR VARSITY TEAN1 A .Q A. Even the Granby veterans formed a basket ball team, named appropriately The Veterans, and were quite successful. In the finals, the Rowdies led by Billy Beard and David Mondy, defeated the Moles, 66-23, to win the intramural basketball league title. Beard was high scorer with 22 points, while Mondy was close behind with 21. Billy Callahan and Carol Camp were the outstanding performers in the Moles line up. A wrestling team was formed at Granby this year, by Coach Bill Martin. The team, composed entirely of Granby boys, was sponsored by the Central Y. M. C. A. After only thirty days of practice they began taking on older and more experienced teams. The team lost its first match to the Newport News Apprentice School, but almost defeated them in the second. They successfully closed the season by soundly beating the Washington and Lee B grapplers. The Harrison brothers, Dick and Billy, have yet to be defeated in a team match. In the hilarious annual Teacher-Student basketball game the students won, 22-7. The game got off to a swell start when, to the howls of the audience, the teachers came onto the hardwood clad in pajamas. A good time was had by all. Frances Reid led the scoring column of the students with 7 points, while Mrs. Walden hit the meshes for 4 points, to lead the teachers. Led by Coach Don Griflin, our basketball team experienced the most success- ful year in the school's history. Winning 23 and losing 1, they became the State champions, and won the Duke-Durham basketball tournament by proving them- selves better than the State champions of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Maryland, and the champions of Washington, D. C. In closing we would like to comment on Granby's extremely successful athletic season. In addition to the players, too much credit cannot be given to our coaches: Mr. Tarrall, Mr. Griffin, Mr. Martin, and our athletic director, Mr. Ray Casey. The teams had very few setbacks, but when they did they always remembered the slogan of their well-loved former coach, Bill Story: Lord, make me a winner, But if, in Thy divine wisdom, Thou makest me lose, Make me lose like a man. w 5 ROWDIES...Intramura1 Champs MOLECATS...Intramural Runners up Itneeling: BEARD, BULL..
