What Sherrie S mitb Ruth Ann Parman Zffzrfan mff Twas the day of registration and I needed a class, One that was fun and easy to pass. My friends were taking yearbook- It sounded like fun, Approval was granted and my schedule was done. Posters were hung in the classrooms with care, In hopes that their message would be recognized there. Don Haven: . io, 38 Sandi Srbulz jane W Hausmann Valerie S berwood V4 611155 I was confused-where should one begin, With pictures to be taken and deadlines to come in? But with Mr. Gatto's advice and team- work from the class, All hard workers were able to pass. The moral to this-For I really must close, Is to have a good book there's no time to doze. Their first game was a fine 13-0 non-league win over Polytechnic, which some- what eased the disappointment of last yearls 14-15 loss to this team. The Highlanders won the first of their league games from Cleveland by a score of 16-7, but were unable to come up with anything better than a 0-0 tie with Canoga Park in game number three. The annual Milkbowl game was a well played and exciting game as Granada upset Taft with a decisive 21-6 victory. One unhappy note marred the rejoicing over the Taft game as Steve Wright, the fine Highlander center and Captain, broke his hand in this game which was a factor in keeping him out of play for the last half of the season. The Highlanders continued their winning ways through two more games, a smashing 26-0 non-league win over North Hollywood and an 18-0 win over Chatsworth in the only game played on Granada's home field. Through these first six games a total of only 13 points had been scored against the Highlanders and they were the number one defensive team in the valley. But then came Birmingham! Along with them came the only real blemish in an otherwise brilliant season. The Braves from Birmingham dominated a lopsided 40-7 game and with this loss went the Highlanders' hopes of the West Valley Championship and also their reign as the only undefeated team in the entire Valley. The last game of the season was with Reseda, who had already clinched the West Valley title. A huge crowd of faithful fans defied the cold that had descended on the Valley, and were rewarded With one of the most thrilling games of the year. The Highlanders were defeated by Reseda 20-10 but were certainly not disgraced. Out of the many brilliant plays and players throughout the year, one name never ceased to be in evidence-Casey Griffin. He carried the ball for a total of 475 yards, scored 6 touchdowns, kicked 7 points, booted two field goals and ended the season by being selected on first team all San Fernando Valley. Griffin will be back next year! 65 A X v 1 in I -.J i I H , Q 'Qs Q M A 9 :E r ag 5.251 i .X X:-f K A , .X NQQQ5 '. yy ' 59116. if . - 1 .. 2 f 1 , f , W 72 Ag , :,y , ' ,QQ 75? , , .A NX NSSWJFX 3.1 ,f 1325- W N 'V M 13'L:5,f'?x U I W fax gf ,, M , f 4 f ,, 1 , ,Q . - A C ' A A .f ' V Q V ,XXQ- ,xkhtkktlsklgg K . h, . A if-'GW45 X fi Aix V it fifif ,ff lm af F K MZ On December 12th the Granada Hills Cross Country squads traveled to the Pierce College course for the All-City Finals with the hope that one of the teams might place high in the final standings. Although the 10th grade team had been defeated by Lincoln in the City preliminaties, and Jim Randall, fifth man, couldn't run because of back injuries, the tenth grade thought they could still come back strong and possibly place in the top three. Each man was told that in order to do this, he would have to run his best race. As the race came to an end, it be- came apparent that Granada Hills had pulled the upset of the year. Mike Lampson, captain, led the top five to the startling win by placing 2nd in city, breaking the old city record. Then Gary Kent, Allan Silver, and Paul Burch came in 8th, llth, and 13th respectively. Finally, a few seconds later, Mike New- man finished 26th to round out the team. When the results were brought in, the tenth grade team, beating Monroe by 23 points and Lincoln by 56 points, was City Champion. The Junior Varsity teatn, although favored to retain their City Championship, had not been sure if they could beat the strong Taft, Monroe, and Garfield teams. However, after seeing the tenth grade win against such stiff competition, they were in- spired to go all out. Rich Hobson, Steve Appleby, and Dave jones,J. V. Captain, all came in among the top ten placing 6th, 7th, and 8th, followed closely by Gary Green and Bob Des- noyers. Granada had won by a fantastic margin in the jamor race beating Monroe by 35 points and Garfield by 50. This gave Granada an unbelievable and shocking 2nd victory in the All-City Finals. Everyone waited for the Varsity in anticipation of what could be the greatest of all the upsets. lf Granada won, it would be the lst time in history that any school had swept the city in all three divisions. And this race was going to be the toughest of the three. Any one of the four great teams could win with Granada facing such powerhouses as Palisades, Taft, and Bir- mingham. Although neither Taft nor Birmingham had de- feated Granada, the scores had been too close to give the Highlanders any comfort. CWe tied Birmingham 28-28 in a league meet and only beat Taft 26-29.5 And to add to the worries of Coach Godfrey and the team, Palisades High had beaten Birmingham badly in the Prelims the week before. So before the race, it was a toss-up as to who would ultimately win. As the race began, excitement ran high. Granada had drawn a good lane for the race and was right between Palisades and Taft. We hoped that our boys could break fast and get in the front of the pack. With 90 boys in the race, anyone who got behind would stay there. The Highlanders proceeded to sprint thc lst quarter mile and were up front with Palisades. As the race grew longer, though, the position of the runners became serious. Granada had four boys well up there, but the fifth man was lagging. Finally, as the runners came in, we had placed four boys in the top 16 in City, a phenomenal achievement. We were ahead of Pali and Taft who had four in the top 24, and four in the top 28 respectively. But it is the fifth man who counts in the final score, and Merl Fletning, suffering from a hip injury, was in 46th place. No one knew who had won. We knew we had 94 points, but we were unsure of Palisades and Taft. Their first men had come in ahead of ours. But as the score was tabulated, Fleming had come in close enough behind to win the race for Granada Final score: GH 94, Taft 98, Pali- sades 98. Bob Evans, captain, led the team to victory taking 8th in the city with a new school record of 8:44. Mark Haberer was l0th in 8:48, with Bill King, captain, and Keith Cooney right behind running 14th and 16th respectively. Their times were 8:53 and 8:56. All four boys had broken the old school record held by Don Wood. Overall, their best times were Evans 8:44, Haberer 8:48, King 8:48, and Cooney 8:51. City history had been made. Granada Hills had swept the city for the first time ever. And as usual, the times were faster than before, thus making this year's teams the best in city history. Granada Hills had the greatest team ever in tenth grade, JV, and Varsity. No school can boast of equaling Granada Hills' achievements on that day. Surely, this was an unbelievable and sensational year for our Harriers. I.et's hope we can do it again next year. I have always wanted to visit California, and my hapa piest day was when I found out that I was going to spend a whole year here. But when I got the address of my new house, I couldn't find Granada Hills on the map. The year I spent here has been the greatest I have ever had. I like the school and all the Highlanders that made it unforgettable. The things I enjoyed the most were the athletic events and I almost became a fanatic of football, and even though I had a busy year I didn't miss a single game. After graduation I will leave Granada Hills and join a lot of other students and we will travel back across the United States. In October I will go to college in Germany, which will give me a chance to learn another language and become an interpreter. I just want to thank all the Highlanders for making me one of them and also thank the A.F.S for this wonder- ful year. lf it hadn't been for them, I would not have had a chance to come. l hope that I will be able to visit Granada Hills again, although many of you will be gone. During our three years at Granada Hills High School, we, the Argyle class S 1965, have encountered numer- ous events Which have provided us with a valuable high school experience. Under the leadership of our sponsors Mr. Kuczynki and Miss George, and the guidance of Mrs. Smith, we have received the oppor- tunity for a fine education. As we leave Granada, We can look back on this book, which will enable us to retain some of our fond memories. .mn lf , 3.1 2. 5 Q f fifahv C arol Acconzando Teryl C arrillo jan Gray Tbonzaf Parry jean Afzuo Karen C oley Liz Rafrnuxsen Walter B reitinger Rhera C raig A nn G rzwn Ernext Smith Raymond Calz'gz'zzri C beryl Dyck Bill King Robert C ar! in Ingrid Marxb Barbara Tranerx jeanne Carlfon Mer! X f gre' V? W wi fn . 5. Z, As editor of the 1965 Tartan, I have experienced the feeling of success and creativity many people never achieve. I would like to express my thanks to every member of the staff for a really great job on this year's book. A special Thank You to our sponsor, Mr. Gatto, for without him the task of editing a book such as this would have been all but impossible. And a personal thank you to Martha Nisson, who not only assisted me in editing this book, but also stepped into the position of editor for the final semester of its production and carried through the original staff plans to conclude a really great Tartan '65,'. Sharon Conner The staff, this last semester has been very enjoyable. We have been responsible for the Senior section of the book for the Argyle class. We were entirely responsible for all of the summer sports, which were track, gymnastics, swimming, golf, baseball, and tennis. There have been only fifteen members on the staff this semester, the smallest staff that the school has ever had. I feel that a smaller staff has worked much better than a large staff, as there is much more cooperation and it has been more ofa group effort. There has been three new members, besides the returning members from last semester. They are Jodi Gushman, jim Korn, and Jim McDermott. My many thanks to this staff, and I know they have tried their best in producing a good and interesting annual. p.
