A wave forms far out in the ocean, and travels toward land, gaining momen- tum until finally it curls and crashes on the shore. It is always changing on its jour- ney forward-it grows from minute to minute, second to second. In the same way, every- thing is increasing or decreas- ing, but is never the same twice. Some things change very quickly, like the waves, while other changes may take centuries. But this whole uni- verse, and all of life is in motion. ln our yearbook, we have attempted to capture some forms in motion. You will see our school from a different angle, in a different way than you are used to looking at it. You will see the beauty of the forms in motion that make up our campus: a leaf, a football player in action, the shadow of a building. And you will realize that even the com- monest thing can become ex- traordinary. A ., , '- .E ft Q.. --- .. if mm , , AA, , 1. , , ,,,s,.y-. . Maioring in Humanities, Karen went on to the University of California at Los Angeles. Doris Brown had the proud distinction of being the Salutatorian, the second highest in scholastic achievement. Doris maiored in Liberal Arts Mathe- matics at Granada Hills High. Her plans include graduation from Occidental College. I6 l J The Ephebian society is a civic betterment and service organization. This honor society of Los An- geles was organized in 1918. lt is based on the ancient Greek Ephebian Order of the sixth century, B.C., and pledged to transmit this city not only, and not less, but far greater and more beautiful than when it was transmitted to us. One student in every forty graduates of Los Angeles is eligible to belong to the society. The qualifications necessary for membership are out- standing scholarship and character, leadership abil- ity, and demonstrated service. They are selected by the faculty and members of their Senior Class. This is one of the highest honors a senior in a Los An- geles high school may attain. CONNIE TOMAL DON TRUE CAROLE OQUIST in-.. Time went too fast and now only memories remain. We entered here, excited that ,A V high school would mark the end of a long and hard iourney. The excitement has changed ii 'ii'i'i into something far more valuable, a knowledge that learning never comes to an end, and ,VV, l ll new and challenging paths await us. We now know our iourney is only beginning. K The Titans became an official part of Granada at the Senior Sweater Assembly. Attired i in elegant aquamarine and white Cardigans, we looked forward to more activities. We soon ' found ourselves besieged with college entrance exams, applications and catalogs. For some V V it was the worries of future employment. Sponsor Mr. Griggs TITAN SENIOR B CHEERLEADERS Jane Schilling, Doris Brown Not Pictured: Anne Higgins Patsy Childs U w '7. I .c The Senior Picnic was a success and we all had a wonderful time. The climax of this eventful year came on January 4, the night of the Prom. The evening was highlighted with the coronation of Queen Dixie Scott and her court: Jane Schilling, Sandy Steinecker, Connie Tomal, and Sue Williams. On the night of the Senior Supper, it was announced that the honor of Valedictorian and Salutatorian would go to Karen Dahlquist and Doris Brown respectfully. Membership in the Ephebian Society was awarded to Carole Oquist, Connie Tomal and Don True. With Pomp and Circumstance filling the air, we marched forward in green and white caps and gowns to receive our diplomas. Our year had come to the grand finale. The last gathering took place at Pickwick Recreational Park for our all-night party. Though our reign as Titans had come to an end, we will always keep the fond memories of our high school years. -wi 4. ., X . .. fb 'MQ Nw. In Belgium it rains a lot, 265 days out of the year and that's why I love Southern California. It's warm, even in the winter, it is dry and the sky is so blue. It is just wonderfull California is a terrific state. I love the freeways, the super-markets, the drive-ins, the ranches, which give me the opportunity to go horseback riding and so many other things. America is like my foster country. If I couldn't stay any longer in Belgium, I would come over to live in California. The people are so friendly to me that I feel right away at home. They make me feel like I am really wanted here. What else can I ask for? My main occupations during this year are: studies lyes, I do studyll, sports lfencing, tennis and golfl, participating in school activities, giving A.F.S. speeches :nd learning how to speak decent English. A question that is very often asked me is How do you like your new school? My answer would be that I fell in love with it at first sight. Granada s simply a wonderful school. There are so many interesting things to do here, so many pleasant things to see and hear. And the football games are not the east part of it-I could hardly believe my eyes when I first saw the drum major, he band and the drill team on the field at halftime. This was an unforgettable aight! I will' be leaving California after graduation with all the other students rom A.F.S. who will tralfel through the States and end in Washington! D. C., and slew York. Next September I will take over my last year of high school and xfter this I hope to enter the University of Ghent and study economics and oreign languages. I am very grateful to the A.F.S. and the Granada Hills A.F.S. Chapter for his wonderful year. I also extend my thanks to all Highlanders, they made it :in unforgettable year. Highlanders, if you'Il remember me, remember this- Nalk together, talk together, all ye people of the earth, then and only then shall ye know peace. 50 W B v Q 'F' Row 1: S. VARSITY A total of iust nine points was the difference between a seven and one record and a four and four record for the Highlanders of Granada Hills in 1963. The Highlanders got off to a fine start by winning four of their first five games. The first game was lost to Poly by a score of 14-13, but they came back to shut out Canoga by a score of 10-0 to kick-off the first of the league games. The highlight of the season came when Granada upset Taft 14-12 in the annual Milkbowl Game. Although the two teams were evenly matched, the Highlanders won by kicking, scoring the extra two points that Taft needed in order to tie the game. Ron Moormeister booted both extra points following a pair of short touchdown runs by Tom Slasor. Fullback Charlie Schwennesen netted 113 yards in the Taft game and he wound up the season with a total of 490 yards. The victory over Taft put the Highlanders in a tie for first place with Birmingham. A 13-0 practice game win over Sylmar and a 20-O win over Chatsworth boosted the Highlanders' hopes. The Highlanders then traveled to Reseda to meet their arch rivals, the Birmingham Braves, for the West Valley League crown. ln front of an overflow crowd the High- landers went scoreless throughout the game to lose, 48-0, to the Braves. The Highlanders never recovered from their first defeat and finished up the season by losing to Reseda, 13-7 and to' Cleveland on our home field, 20-21. Marty Downen was field general throughout the sea- son. He passed 94 times and connected 43 times. Downen also scored four touchdowns to tie Tom Slasor for high point honors with 24 points. Cwfu C' AND THEY SHALL RUN OVER THE FAR HORlZONS 1963 marked a banner year for the Cross Country teams of Granada Hills High School. Competition started during the second week of the semester with some 65 hopeful boys striving to make the team. ln the short space of two weeks, over 20 boys had dropped by the wayside. With the re- mainder of the group training hard, the season started with o victory for the Varsity and J.V. squads over the Spartans of Sylmar. The 10th grade team was barely beaten by 2 points. As league competition began, the teams started to iell and one school after another fell before the ever im- proving Scots. Led by Captain Don Wood, the Varsity squad swept aside all competition in their quest for the West Valley crown. After several so-called upsets the team emerged with a 6-0 record in dual meet competition and then went on to capture the All-Valley meet and emerge as champions for 1963. They entered city-wide competition and despite several boys being ill managed to finish 4th in the City finals. This was the highest finish of any Varsity team from either East or West Valley and the highest finish any Varsity team from Granada has ever managed in All-City competition. J.V. team started strongly and swept aside all the teams 1... CROSS COUNTRY - 10th GRADE Row 1: D. leibel, G. Braun, S. Appleby fcapt.l, M. Haberer, B. Halkadies. Row 2 Coach Godfrey, C. Millar, R. Cleveland managed to score 3 points against this great team. led by Captain Dennis Mavridis, the team completely dominated the league with a perfect 6-O dual meet record and then went on to record the lowest score ever in All-Valley competition. This fine group showed their team spirit and determination by capturing 3 of the first 10 places and 5 of the first 'I5 places to completely dominate the first All-City championship by a Varsity or Jr. Varsity team in the School's history. Many of the boys from this team will be returning next year to form a very strong nucleus for what we hope will be another championship squad. After losing their first meet to Taft, the eventual All-City champions, the 10th grade team led by Captain Steve Appleby swept aside all other competition to wind up the season in second place with a 5-l record. They went on to the All-Valley meet and again finished second to Taft. In City competition, lack of depth caused the team to falter and finish 10th. With the determination and spirit shown by all the team members this year, we look forward to an- other Banner year in 1964. Congratulations to all the boys for a fine iob-well done. Cleveland .. 70 W Granada Hills had the only undefeated basketball team in the San Fernando Valley. The Highlanders rolled to the West Valley League championship tournament. Granada Hills' fine showing brought the first city basketball championship ever to a West Valley school and it was only the second time that a Valley school had advanced to the city finals. After winning two non-league tilts against North Hollywood, 83-63, and Monroe, 66-55, the Highlanders opened the West Valley campaign. Coach Al Stone's team started in quest of the league title by defeating Canoga Park, 89-50 and after some early trouble from Taft High, Granada Hills pulled away to defeat the Toreadors, 64-55, in their second league game. Easy wins over Chatsworth and Birmingham followed, and then the Highlanders met undefeated Reseda. The Regents fell to Granada Hills, and the Highlanders assumed first place in the West Valley League. The Highlanders continued to roll through the rest of the schedule winning with compar- ative ease. After piling up a 7-O record to lead the league, Taft again gave the Highlanders some trouble, but Granada Hills came out on top ot the second meeting between the two clubs by a 60-49 triumph. That marked the lowest scoring total Granada Hills had all season long. The highest point total the Highlanders came up with was in the final game against Cleveland. Gary Kitch and Randy Strnad paced the Highlanders to a 101-57 win over the Cavaliers. In between the Taft win and the final over Cleveland were wins over Chatsworth, Birmingham and Reseda. The second Reseda game was the closest call the Highlanders had all season long. The Regents never gave up and Granada Hills barely won its eleventh game against no losses, 74-70. During the course of the West Valley League season the Highlanders set a number of individual and team records. Kitch scored 36 of the Granada Hills' 101 points against Cleve- land in the final league game of the year. Both were new school marks. The Highlanders, who won 18 straight games during the year, were the first team to complete a West Valley League schedule undefeated. The Highlanders also established a league record by sinking 42 field goals in one game against Birmingham. The Highlanders roared to the 1963-64 Los Angeles City championship with a dazzling display of basketball under the direction of coach Stone. The Highlanders, seeded fourth when the tournament began, were the only maior club to escape defeat in the upset studded tourney which began at Venice High School and ended before a huge throng in the Memorial Sports Arena. Granda Hills opened tournament play easily enough by completely outclassing Lincoln, the second place team in the Northern League, 89-57. Guard Vern Sorenson and center Jim Jones were the big guns for the Highlanders in the contest with 25 and 24 points respectively. However, the second-round was another story. University High, the co-champions of the Western League, gave Granada Hills a harrowing time before bowing in overtime, 67-65. The eventual city champs were almost ousted by the fired-up Warriors, but Joe Danielson missed a free throw with just one-second remaining in regulation play and the game went into overtime. Tom Levin scored what proved to be the winning points on two free throws with only 14 seconds left in the game. Kitch, Strnad and Sorenson all scored double figures for the Highlanders with 18, 15, and 13 points. In the semi-finals, Granada Hills met an old toe, Taft, for the third time during the season. The result was the same, as the Highlanders broke open a tight bat'tle in the final two periods to win, 60-49. Jones, Kitch, Strnad and Sorenson all scored more than 10 points for the victorious Highlanders. In the city finals, Granada Hills- was hit hard by fouls as Strnad, Kitch, Levin, Jones and Gene Gaudio all fouled out of the game. Roosevelt, with Walt Simon generating 32 points, couldn't overcome the fine play of the entire Highlander team, therefore losing the decisive contest 71-68. Tom Levin played one of his finest games of the year, scoring 22 points to lead Granada to the championship. Sorenson, the only starter to finish out the game on the floor, scored 15 points. Highlander forward, Strnad, was named to the All-Tournament first team and Sorenson and Levin were selected to the second-team. Sorenson also walked away with a trophy for being the outstanding defensive player of the tournament. 71 Vern Sorenson Jim Jones F SX' 'fi XA' H Q E4 Q6 i 5 -- WY sf .1 'J 4. 3 .uma J.V. Row 1: D. Junior-Varsity 1964 The Granada Hills High School Junior-Varsity Basketball Team culminated the 1963-64 season with the optimum desire of all teams, the league cham- pionship. The Highlander J.V.'s finished with a total season record of 12 wins and 2 losses. These two losses came at the hands of Monroe in the second practice game, and Taft in a double-overtime in the second league game. The J.V.'s then went on a ten- game winning streak including an eight-point victory over Taft the second time around to complete the season. The West-Valley crown became a reality when a group of young men from the Junior-Varsity dedi- cated themselves to determination, hustle, unselfish- ness, and over-all team effort. The swim team, this year, has proved to be the best one produced by the Highlanders. lt was boosted by last year's Bee City Champions , and last year's V a r s ity, which placed forth in the city. Our Varsity was the only team to conquer Birmingham's varsity in eight years. ln doing so, they tied for first place in the West Valley League with Bir- mingham and Taft. Leading the Varsity squad were, Brian Turnball, butter- fly, Kim Roush, backstroke, Richie Statler, breastroke, and Daryle Cooper, freestyle. Dur- ing the duel meet season a number of r e c o r d s were broken. Some of the other men who helped to build up the back- bone of the team were Terry Finucane, Mike Schultz, Dave McNally and Glen Pace, along with the other members of the team including the team cap- tains, Chuck Bates, varsity, Bee captain Joey Rauch, and Cee captain Mike Boyd. One im- portant factor of the team's success was the fine direction of Coach Cravens. The purpose of the Bank of America Awards is to recog- nize and honor outstanding seniors whose scholastic at- tainments, sense of civic re- sponsibility, and evidence of leadership gives most promise of future success and service to society. They had the honor of wear- ing a gold tassel on their graduation caps, and receiving a gold seal on their diplomas. Graduating students who earned a 3.00 grade average in high school receive a silver seal on their di- plomas. This year, there were thirty-one Gold Seal Bearers, and one-hundred Silver Seal Bearers in the Kealoha Class of Summer, 1964. f5255'Z597?Si2iL . 153555, QW -,ff ,K as 9335 . .. Temple November 26, i963 Dear Ellen, I'm sorry to know the death of President Kennedy. l can hardly find words to tell you how deeply l, know we, Japan- ese were shocked and grieved. Though he was not a president of Japan, he and his personal character caught the Japanese heart. I have known what a great statesman he was and what a good and gentle father for his children through newspapers, T.V. and radio. Now, l know that again. I can hardly read the newspapers or watch T.V. without tears. ln Japan, many masses read for John F. Kennedy, the President of the U.S.A. l can know how distressful and sorrowful you Americans are. I cannot help praying to God that President John F. Kennedy may get eternal happiness and please give his wife and his children and all his family the spirits to endure this misfortune. l hope America goes forward and endeavors for the peace of the world. I will pray for him, for his wife and children, for Americans and for the peace of the world. Heaven help you. May he rest in peace. Maybe we should pray for Oswald who was killed by Ruby. Sincerely yours, Toshiko Ohkawara We remember when he came to our city, a tired man with a nation's burdens on his shoulders, visiting a high school prom. Who will ever forget the humor he displayed at press conferences or the friendliness shown to exchange students on the White House lawn? There were times when he led us safely through a crisis and times when the sight of a little child running to his outstretched arms brought a youthful laughter back to his face. We all knew the husband and father who would take his children on long walks along the beach. Yes, each and every student and teacher at Granada Hills High School will always remember a man of great stature and strong con- victions, our thirty-fifth President of the United States of America, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. sefffftf' 'Vt'-s BK .3 .J .tai EJ ? 4lun ff hfT' sf..
