january 6, 1941-President Roosevelt in annual message to congress declared that the U.S.A. should act as an arsenal to supply all the necessary war supplies to all democracies defending themselves against aggres- sive nations. March 6, 1941-Bus strike ties up New York city traffic. December 8, 1941-U.S. Congress declared war on japan after President Roosevelt denounced japanese ag- gression and treachery in an address to joint session of Congress, the Senate voted 82-0 and the House of Rep- resentatives voted 388-1. Representative Jeanette Rankin, Republican from Montana was the lone dissenter. Throughout 1941 the nation's defense and other strategic industries were plagued by strikers who caused immeasurable damage to the defense effort. January 1, 1942-There was signed at Washington a Declaration of the United Nations by which 26 nations joined in the pledge to fight together until the overthrow of the tyrannical regimes of Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito. january 6, 1942-Roosevelt in annual state of Union message told Congress that the U.S. would spend S56 Billion in the fiscal years from 1942-1943, more than half the national income to prosecute war against axis. March 13, 1943-Navy Department stated that japanese lost 64 ships in Solomons campaign while U.S. lost only 32 vessels. january 13, 1944-President Roosevelt submits budget of S99,769,000,000 to Congress for fiscal year 1944- 1945 for prosecuting war and providing for postwar economic re-adjustments. january 19, 1944-Secretary Stinson returned railways to owners after President Roosevelt announced final settlement of railway wage dispute. April 5, 1944-Wendell Wilkie withdrew as candidate for G.O.P. presidential nomination after defeat in Wisconsin primaries. july 20, 1944-President Roosevelt was nominated for 4th term as President. December 23, 1944-All horse racing was banned indefinitely as of january 3 by Director Byrnes of War Mobilization and reconversion in move to save labor and materials. December 24, 1944-New and severe food rationing of major food items to go into effect December 31 by O.P.A. january 1, 1945-Adolf Hitler said German people would never capitulate because surrender would mean enslavement. ' April 12, 1945-Franklin Delano Roosevelt died suddenly as result of brain hemorrhage at his estate in Warm Springs, Georgia: Vice-President Harry S. Truman was sworn in as President of the United States. - April 25, 1945-U.N. Conference on International Or- ganization opened in San Francisco. May 1, 1945-Hamburg radio declared Adolf Hitler had died in Berlin. May 7, 1945-Germany surrenders unconditionally to western allies and Soviet Union at 2: 14 AM in General Eisenhower's headquarters in France, thus ending Euro- pean phase of World War II. August 6, 1945-U.S. Air Force drops 2nd atomic bomb . on japan, target Nagasaki. August 28, 1945- Occupation of japan was begun by 1 about 150 U.S. soldiers who landed at Atsungi. january 3, 1946-President Truman called on U.S. peo- ple as most powerful pressure group in the world to exert their influence with Congress to speed up re- conversion program. 2
