W1 1 9 .Cuz . me, ,4 Presidenf Jones has speni' mosf of his aduli' life building Grambling College and fhe Grambling image. He is an educafor who holds fhe respecf and con- fidence of people everywhere. Sfudenis find him conscienfious and efficienf, yef pafienf and undersfanding. His resolufe, confidenf spirif has enabled him +o build a college fhai' has developed far beyond fhe hopes of ifs mosf ardenf advocafes. The Grambling sfory is an impressive saga of courage, deferminafion, and progress. Grambling was founded on Aug. 4, I90I by fhe Iafe Charles P. Adams, a man robusf in body, aim and soul. He was senf fo Grambling by Boolcer T. Wash- ingfon and sei' fourfh on a courageous venfure wifh such deferminafion and wisdom 'lhai' he esfablished himself indelibly among educafional pioneers. Presidenf Jones' realm of adminisfrafion dafes back fo July I, I936 when Grambling became sfafe supporfed. Under his leadership fhe college has grown and prospered fo a poinf where if is readily recognized, accredifed, and highly respecfed professionally and academically. ln buildings, in qualify of insfrucfion, in variefy of course offerings, in quanfify and qualify of sfaff members, in alhlefic and ofher compefifion, in size and lzind of enrollmenf, in all fhings insfifufionally academic, Grambling represenfs a sfirring sfory. Only I6 years ago fhe school granfed ifs firsf B.S., degree. Since I948 Grambling has graduafed more fhan 7,000 persons who are worlring in counfless iobs foo numerous fo name. When Presidenf Jones fool: office fhe school had I20 sfudenfs and l7 faculfy members. Grambling's appropriafion from fhe sfafe during his firsi' year was S54,000. Today Grambling has an enrollmenf of 3,225 sfudenfs, and a faculfy and sfaff of more fhan 400, including 45 persons holding fhe d'oc'I'oral degree. The currenf appropriafion from fhe sfafe is in excess of S3-million. Grambling has a physical planf consisfing of 38 modern. permanenf buildings, a large farm, spacious campus parking, and an afhlefic field and sfadium wifh a fofal valuafion of S26-million. Throughoui' ifs hisfory Grambling has sfeadfasfly remained concerned' wifh +he individual - his needs, his falenfs, .his hopes and aspirafions, and his social pofenfialifies. This people-cenfered concern has earned fhe college a repufafion as one of fhe nafion's oufsfanding insfifufions. Wifh iob opporfunifies and social goals now affainable which were unfhinlcable a few years ago for individuals capable of meefing increasingly rigid demands, fhe college enrollmeni' is expecfed fo climb fo 7,000 by I975. Grambling has had only fwo presidenfs in ifs 63 year hisfory - Adams fhe founder, and Jones 'ihe builder - and, indeed, everyone who sefs foof on fhe sprawling campus can find in fheir greai' work inspirafion +o reach ouf and live radianfly. Grambling used a succession of long drives and adverse breaks to score in every quarter. The contest found both clubs cloaked in anonymity in the Southwestern Athletic Conference race. Grambling compiled a 5-3-1 record last fall after pulling the reins on overconfidence. Coach Eddie Robinson will seek amends with a spirited crew this year that will have to be bombarded out of contention. The locals displayed a look of growing solidarity in spring drills. Though not heavy on experience, returning lettermen pack some large-calibre guns. Despite Robinson's conservative estimate of an even split season, old grads await the '64 campaign with eager antici- ation. In eight seasons he has compiled an incredible 213-35 won-loss record in the tough Southwestern Athletic Con- ference. Hobdy has won one NAIA national title, one Mid-West and four SWAC championships while developing six small- college All-Americans. I-le was named NAIA Coach-of-the-Year in 1963 by Basketball Writers of America. A serious-minded perfectionist, he seems to improve his handicraft each season. Rival coaches claim that he seldom makes the same mistake twice. I-Iobdy has a mature, quiet and sound approach to his job. I-Iis race-horse attack is one of the most interesting and imaginative in basketball and his coaching inventiveness is the one big reason why Grambling played before 58,799 fans in 13 home games this season. :lim Duplantier, a star forward on the 1960 team, is completing his first full season as assistant coach after a two year stint in the army. He is a hard worker with a keen, analytical mind. Like Hobdy, Duplantier holds an M.A. degree from the State University of Iowa. The quartet of 6-10 Willis Reed, Grambling fLa.J3 6-9 Lueious Jackson, Pan American Cfexasjg 6-5 Jim Boutln, Lewis and Clark Q0re.5, and 6-1 Cecil Tuttle, Georgetown 4Ky.J, heads the 10-man mythical first team. All are seniors. A year ago, Jackson led Pan American to the NAIA National Tournament champion ship and twice has been named the tournament's most valuable player. Pan American placed second ln the l96b national tournament. Phil Shirk, 6-3 senior from Texas ASI, who was a first-team selection in 1962 and was named to the second 10 last year, regained a berth on the first team this year. Shirk missed much of the 1962-63 season with a broken foot, Joining Houtin and Shlrk on the roster of forwards are 6-7 Jesse' Branson, Elon QN.C.j, the lone junior on the top 10, and 6-6 Lou Skurcenski, Nestminster QPa,j. Rounding out the first team are three guards, Dean Church, Southwestern Loulslanag Ralph Telken of national champion Rockhurst CMOJ, and Jerry Moore, Morris Harvey UA.Va. J . Telken, a second team honoree in 1963, proved to be the defensive standout of the national tournament and sparked his team during the regular season with 119 steals or interceptions, Church was the most valuable player in the Gulf States Con- ference and was a big factor in Southwestern gaining a tie for the league title. Moore averaged 26 points a game and led Morris Harvey to the national tournament for the second time Ln three years. Reed helped his team win the national championship four years ago and was the main reason why the Tigers placed third a year ago, This year's Grambling club was upset in the second round after being seeded third. Announcement of the selection of the three men was made hy A. O. Duer, executive secretary of the NAIA, who added that two of the men would be honored during the NAIA Baseball Hall of Fame banquet, Sunday, June 7 at St. joseph, Mo., and a third would be honored in August. ' The two coaches who will be honored at St. Joseph are R.VV.E. Jones, president as well as baseball coach at Grambl- ing College, Grambling, La., and Max Molock, baseball coach at St. Mary's College, Winona, Minn. Scheduled to be honored in August is fomier major leaguer James Climmyj Gleeson, a coach with the New York Yankees and a graduate of Rockhurst College, Kansas City, Mo. The presentation will take place in Kansas City. Officials at Grambling claim that their president is the only coaching president in American colleges and he has served in a dual capacity for 38 years. Since World War II, Grambling's teams have won 373 games while losing only 69 and have won more than 700 games since baseball was added to the Grambling athletic program. Grambling reached its all-time high last year when the Tigers placed second in the NAIA National Tournament. Not only does jones direct his team from the third-base coaching box during every game, but he still hits all infield workouts and supervises batting and pitching practice, often pitching batting practice himself. A year ago he was honored by the American Association of College Baseball Coaches with their 25-year award. Players from his teams have signed professional contracts for bonuses that exceed S275,000. hlolock coached three sports at De LaSalle High School, Kansas City, Mo., from 1936-40, then returned to his alma mater, St. Marys, where he has coached for 24 years. 2D St. Joseph, Mo., News-Press, Sunday. lunn 1, IOM T,A,A.', ,',,'J',',',-,',',':,A,-,-::,',.',Yv','.'vA.'v'..'v'-'-'v'v'f.7v'i-'v'-AllA-'-'v'v'v'-C-'v'v'-'-'v'v'v'.'.'v'l ' - J By BILL scorr :::.-:.-,-.-.-.-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-s,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-:,-.-.-.-.-.-.-ff .--::---4 Man of Many Talents Whether cloaked in the flowing robes of an educa- tor at the spring rite ot' graduation or decked in base- ball flannels hitting lungoos, R. If that is a source of pride, Jones' con- tributions to the development of the school's sports program, particularly to baseball, are similarly impressive. His teams have won 379 games and lost 59 since the second World War. More than a dozen Grambling baseball stars have signed bonus contracts, amounting to roughly S275,000 to turn professional. Tonight's honor is one more in a long list for the president-coach. Last year. the American Association of College Baseball Coaches cited him for a quarter of a century of leadership and devotion to college baseball Last year, Jones guided his Tigers to the runner- up position in the NAIA collegiate World Series here. This week, they'll make another stab at the big prize. You'll see Mr. Jones in the coaching box at third base. He's as at home there as he is behind his college president's desk. AA . uewii,-5 He has tutored five NAIA champions X and six All-Americans. 4514213 Williams 'lallting with a Reporter The track renaissance that Coach Tom Williams promised for several years produced national headlines for Gramb- ling during the spring and brought delight to the hearts of old grads everywhere. Tiger 440 and 880 relay teams enjoyed an undisturbed monopoly and tied the world 440 record before a national TV audience in California in early April. Three times during the year they equalled the mark of 40.0 flat. Don Meadows, Vernus Ragsdale, Richard Stebbins and Don Owens recorded the best time in the world in both the 440 and 880 in '64. Stebbins is envisioning a trip to the Olympics after qualifying in both the 100 and 200 meters, and running on the 400 meter relay team in the US-USSR duel meet. In Retrospect As we look from the reviewing stand with fond memories at the 1963-64 school year, we find many events that warrent silent re-enacting that the Tiger provides. The 1964 Annual has been a. long and tedious job. We have attempted to show some of the many facets that make up College Life at Grambling. The following pages will spell out in detail events and activities that made the 1963-64 session a happy one. Each one of us can take nourishment from it. There is an old saying here that the past is in the yearbook, the present is challenging, and future is up to you. l l 'S r.- - L '4f ' vm' ' 'V Ni' HW M' gistrar Garner Honor d I 1, I 'D 4. Com- pletecl two years ago, the modern two-story structure houses books and other vital information necessary for tlic existence of Grambling as an institution of liiglier learning. f , s I hop Gr p ks LOUIS RICHARDS Displaying a singular enthusiasm for college life, Louis Richards distinguished himself with his academic achieve- ments and efficient leadership through four years of work at Grambling, A midterm honor graduate, he was elected a 1964 Danforth Graduate Fellow to study for the Ph.D., degree in mathematics at the University of Michigan. Danforth appointments are for one year and are normally renewable for tht-ee additional years of study, The Danforth Graduate Fellowship Program was initiated in 1951 for the purpose of attracting outstanding college seniors and graduates to the college teaching profession. Registration ,nv f- 5. l. lu., Freshmen receive their first experience in individual and mob psychology during registration. Frustrations result from standing in seemingly unending lines, adusting schedules when sections close, and retracing routes. to pick up correct class card. It's confusing to newcomers and oldtimers alike. Despite the confusion, 3,225 students registered for the fall semester. A similar number survived to suffer the frustrations again in January.
