Some of the people with whom we associate in high school are naturally sought out as guides and friends because of their valuable counsel and corn- radeship. Such a person is the one to whom this annual is dedicated. She has gained our admiration and respect by her genuine interest and loyalty to us. Through association with her, one sees the deep concern she has for all her students. She demonstrates a faith in youth that inspires them to do only their best. It is with deepest appreciation and gratitude that we, the senior class of nineteen hundred and fifty-seven, do dedicate this, the thirty-second volume of the Kay Aitch Ess, to MRS. A. J. Cer- tainly their stories from personal ex- periences will have an effect upon us that we will not realize for quite a while. Each of them holds great plans for each of us, and we will do our best to try to live up to these ex- pectations. . -.V 23. 'T . ? M-nv 7W m J EAN P. MISS CARLOTTA NEWBORN Regretfully do we say adieu to Miss Carlotta-we wonlt say goodbye for she has been too long an important part of our school system for us to make our break so final. Before she became secretary to our former Superintendents of Schools, K. R. Curtis and Major W. A. Graham. she served many years as a teacher in the Kinston schools. After the resignation of Major Graham she continued her services under his successor. Mr. Jean P. Booth. until ill health compelled her to resign on December 31. 1956. We are saddened to lose her in this capacity. but we hope she will continue to visit us often and make us glad with her cheerful smile. MRS. KATHERINE SBI S6'f'l'f'lllfjv' I0 the Prinfipal vs.: ff? ZH R+ ,fi Q THE CHALLENGE OF LEADERSHIP Leadership of a high school or- ganization is a demanding and ex- acting joh. The classes need en- thusiastic leaders who are willing to work hard at their activities. The Seniors want a president who can hold the office with dignity-one who is respected by his classmates, the faculty, and the community's adults. The Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen need leaders who can organize their classes into efficient groups with the enthusiasm needed to fulfill their responsibility to themselves and others. Grainger High has heen fortunate that these challenges have been met. Its leaders have always placed Grainger High in a high position of leadership and respect among the adults of the community and her sister schools. The defense of the State Championship, the fight to upset a highly-rated team, the gaily- decorated field, the marching bands, the last minutes of a tied-up basket- ball game, the tenseness of a base- ball field when the score is tied and a pinch-hitter is put in to try for that all-important hit to save the game -these memories of the thrill of competition will long be remem- bered by all. - -fif fz. .
