N. c, May 30, l956 Student Body Grainger High School Kinston, North Carolina Dear Students: As you leaf through the pages of this annual you will remember some of the happiest days of your life. You will recall the Lewilderment of the first few days in the seventh grade but also the thrill of being able to say, HI am in high school.H The pictures of friends will bring oack memories of your first school dance, your first par- ticipation in high school athletics, in band, in glee club and in dramatics. As you will remember, however, high school was not all play. There was always somethingg homework, a test, or an examination to prepare for the next day. Many times you wondered how you would do every- thing you were supposed to do. Yet, it was the mixture of work and play that made your high school days so pleasant. It was the combi- nation of praise and blame that prepared you for life as a citizen of the United States. Many of you accepted your responsibilities and did the oest you could. Some of you did not accept your duties and, therefore, will be handicapped for years to come. To those of you who will not graduate this year, remember that you have a job to do - complete your high'school education. It is an opportunity which is available to the citizens of only a few nations Take advantage of it while you mayg for once you stop, the odds are against your returning to graduate. America needs wetl informed and educated citizens if she is to maintain her standing in the world today. Congratulations to the Annual Staff for such an excellent book and to the Senior Class to whom high school will soon be nothing but a memory. Sincerely, John H. Horne, Principal HRS. With his returning veterans and talented newcomers from the junior varsity. Coach Mock presented a well-rounded squad which featured a rugged line and a fancy array of backs. The Red Devils of 1055 finished the regular season with a record of 'J wins and only l defeat. a T-U loss to A.'X:X Raleigh. and then added three post season victories in their climh to the AA crow n. Perhaps the most exciting contest of the season was the championship game with Hendersonville when the ixlOClCltlE'Il. after trailing T to 0. fought hack for a 12 to T victory. Several members of the squad grabbed post season honors. Poo Rochelle. Charles Randolph, Wiilliam Hill. Gene Handy. and'Ceorge Graves were placed on the all- conference team. Rochelle. Randolph. Handy. and Hill were named to all-eastern squads. and Hill and Handy' earned positions on all-state squads. One of North Carolina's outstanding young golfers in 1955 proved to be Grainger High's own Larry Beck. Larry won the Carolina's Junior Championship at Charlotte and the North Carolina Jaycee tournament at Salisbury. The latter prize earned him a trip to the National Tournament at Columbus, Georgia. Larry, who hails from a golfing family and hopes some day to be a professional, has a bright future in this sport if he continues his winning ways. Orr races goalward for the winning touchdown. mzef? ln perhaps the most exciting grid hattle of the year the Grainger High Red Devils won the State .XA foothall championship by defeating llenderson- ville I2-T. The breaks seemed to go against the Red Dix-ils during the early part of the game. and as the first half ended, the visiting Bearcats were leading T-0. But as the second half got underway, the Red Men really poured on the steam. Late in the third quarter fullback George Graves broke through the Bearcats' line. eluded their secondary. and raced 53 yards for the Devils' first score: but Bobby Stanleyis extra point foot was wide and the visitors still led T-6. Most of the fourth quarter was a tight defensive struggle. hut with only a few minutes remaining in the game. Bohhy Orr. a work horse halfhack throughout the season. put the game on ice with a brilliant all yard run. Stanleyis conversion w as blocked. but it didn't matter: the clock soon killed Hendersonyilleis chances for another touchdown and the Frank Mock coached devils were State AA football champions for 1955.
