Remember-how as seventh and eighth graders, we felt so small and idolized the superior Seniors--how, as ninth graders, we were proud to say that we were Fresh- men in high school-how, as tenth graders, we looked. for- ward to becoming Juniors so that we could go tafthe Junior-Senior-and finally, how as Juniors, we worked hard to raise enough money to pay for the banquet. Now as Seniors, looking back on all our eventful and pleasant years in the process of our education, we seek to share and preserve our memories by enclosing them between the covers of this volume of the Kay-Aitch-Ess. 1' DEDICATION WE, THE CLASS OF 1950, DEDICATE TO MR. A CLASS OF 1950 g When, in the course of high school events, it becomes neces- . connected its members with one another, and to assume among the trials of North Carolina the separate stations to which the . ' v laws of said state and Grainger High School entitle them, a due regard for the opinions of instructors entitle that they should de- 1 clare the causes which impel to the graduation. f We hold these facts to be self-evident, that all classes are tt,, 1 ' given ambitions, that they are endowed by their high school with fy 1 ,V A certain inalienable rights, that among these are work, play and nf, 3 A sary for one class to dissolve the scholastic bands which have graduation, that to secure these, instructors are placed over them, deriving their just powers from the consent of the administration, that whenever these students have completed the necessary requirements, it is the duty of the high school to graduate them. When a long train of students, pursuing faithfully the same object convinces the high school authorities that official requirements have been met, it is their right to be graduated, and to be provided with new work for their future security. The history of the class of 1950 of Grainger High School is a history of faithful work and untold sacrifices. To prove this let facts of our history be submitted to an appreciative world. We have humbled ourselves when Freshmen, to conditions the most trying and difficult. for the pleasure of t'1e upper-classmen. We have eo-operated with the Student Council, both obeying regulations and causing new ones to be made. We have supported instructors, contrary to our will, in the assignment of our work, smil- ing when term papers were mentioned, and entering into the spirit of oral reports. We have combined with each other to agree that the high school should be very grateful to us: For manifesting a great degree of dignity throughout our career. For respecting the high standards of the school in the selection of our class officers, choos- ing therefore, in our Freshman year jack Gary, in our Sophomore year deciding on the merits of John Montgomery, and in our junior year uniting under the leadership of Marian Sutton in working for the junior-Senior, choosing as our Senior President John Montgomery again. For taking an active part in athletics, accepting defeat when necessary, yet striving al- ways to grow stronger. We have plundered the school, outdoors and in, to find its noblest resources. We have incited domestic improvements among us and have endeavored to lend assistance to our maids and janitors whose known vocation is to bring destruction to all disorder and unsightliness in our rooms each day. Nor have we been wanting in attention to our inferior classes. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their radicals to take privileges not granted to them. Also we have reminded them of the many difficulties encountered by our class. Buddy Bradshaw, joint owner, named the store. He says How Sech a store can make a profit is beyond him. Blucher is so free-hearted. It seems to be very successful, though. Yankees last Sunday. I guess it took four players from K-Town to liven up the Boston Red Sox baseball team. There is also an item on an interview with Sherill Williams, boys' basketball coach for Wake Forest, and Eleanor Sanderson, coach for the girls. They both predict another winning streak this year. I attended Virginia's tea yesterday. She certainly is a charming hostess. Being the mayor's wife, I suppose it is only natural for her. Mary Helen Faulkner, Nelda Bruton, and Betty Gary wore positively stunning dresses. They were creations of Betty Tyler, famous dress designer in Chicago. I am glad that most of our classmates are re naining in Kinston for their careers. Mildred Har- rell, Jo Gentry, Mable Butner, Giula Fordham, and Lou,' Prescott are doing secretarial work. Sammy Hines, Norman Franks, George Carter, aid Floyd Smith are car dealers. Molly Quinn, part owner of Sutton Millinery with Marion Sutto 1, has bought four different cars this year. Jack Gary is principal of G.H.S. Mary H. Watson is t'1e music director, Jannette McCain heads the Home Ec. Department. Al Alphin, Bobby Pittman, and Thomas Watson are also members of the faculty. Mary Alice Bradshaw and Louise Moore are librarians for the public library. Plumer Daniels and Billy Oliver are joint owners in a plumbing business. Jessie Cox and Rosemary Courie are local church youth leaders. Dot,' Haynes, Nina Bell Halton, and Hilda Grace Riggs are also leaders for their churches. Geraldine Conway, Joyce Lee, J. W. Hill, and Ken Brewer are directing youth work in the Salvation Army churches in other cities. A few of our old friends, however, are not living in Kinston. She said in a recent letter that she often saw Ora Creech who owns a restaurant there. She also saw Jackie Rhodes, Mary Ellen Tucker, and Grace Pollock who chose marriage as their ca- reer. I received a special invitation to the premiere of Duel in the Fun this week from Sidney Hart. He and Edgar Bell are directors. Betty Cole and Dick Tyndall are playing the leading roles. Other important members of the cast are Ernest Malloy, Bobby Horton, and Henry Holleman. Cable Ramsey is art director, Ed Maroules and Bobby Nunn are set instructors. Peggy Best and Dot West are fashion directors. Makeup artist is Isabelle White. Alston Ipock and Edward Brock have really made a fortune on a new popcorn machine in- vention. Herbert Suggs, another inventor, improved on the car-airplane combined. I was just looking through Peep, a fashion magazine edited by Betty L. Taylor, and saw some beautiful new hair style creations by Jean Henry, modeled by Wilma Grady. Jean must have had Emmett Morton's new hair bleach discovery fwith which he has made thousandsj in mind when she predicted that the best styles are for blonds this season. There was also a colorful section on hat styles by Designers Mildred Koonce and Mary Lillie Hill. Mildred thinks that fruit will be a popular feature on this season's hats. Joe Whaley is editor in chief for the new local newspaper. It really has been a great success. Byrd Humphreys and Bill Cole are the photographers. Virgie Sparrow, Minnie Moore, and Mozelle Seymour are typists. Business manager is Ellis Holland, who taught in the high school last year. Society reporter is Geraldine Wade.
