If and when we encounter such a person, we cannot feel her effect, we do not appreciate her efforts, until we have had the years of experience necessary to evaluate in retrospect all that has made an impression upon us. ln our school there is one who has left an indelible imprint upon us by her careful help and guidanceg there is one who regards the training and education of youth as Work requiring an artist's skill and a scien- tist's precision. She has taken her work seriously, has worked her art well, and has gloried in the demands which that art has made upon her. On September 15, 1948, our life as Seniors began, and the walls resounded- -for we were the rippling voices and the full-toned belly-laughter of our young world. -for we were the lunch-time-at-Rick's and the stop-a-minute-at-Shady's, the shaggers, the cloggers, the ever-raving don't-you-just-love's. -for we kept the long night watches for games, parties, studies. We watched the long nights and lived the short days that were numbered in our youth. -for we were the Tower of Babel and the babbling of foreign tongues. W'e were the youth. -for we were the idiotic little bugs buzzing in the study halls, the long-hairs, the foot- ball players, the milkshake drinkers, the hot-dog eaters. -for we were the daneersg we were the youth- 1: 3 WS? Yes, we the Seniors fthat's what I saidj of G.I'I.S.-1949-are reminiscing over the enjoyable f?j times that we spent during our last year in high school in Mrs. Wooten's class. Put away your notes-get out pencil and paper-we are going to have a little quiz. Little. -May I borrow a pack of paper? Who is the U. S. rep- resentative to the Security Council?--That's one I don't know-Next ques- tion-Who ran for president on the Progressive ticket? Now, how should I know? I'm too young to vote. So goes the quiz down to the last question- Discuss in detail a current event. I can't possibly do that 'cause our paper got hung in a tree this morning. -Education Week--projects due next Tuesday-Is it all right if I make a poster?-Posters came from all directions until it looked as if they would fall out of the windows. One ambitious pupil even made a model of the Se- curity Council. We barely finished this when--term themes!-I've got to go to the Li- brary!-Do you know anything about compulsory arbitration? Neither do I -Thirty pages!-Who made a one plus?-Me, I'm crazy about three's. Then we heard the rumor that Mrs. Wooten was leaving. It seemed im- possible, for what's sociology without Mrs. Wooten? Yes, she left. Oh-h-h-h dear, now how will we ever pass? By some strange coincidence we did. It was hard but also fun. Agree? ALGEBRA Well, tomorrow, we again have the sincere pleasure of returning to- well, of course, it couldn't be anything but algebra. Yes the love of our life! Such fond memories. Did you say, What is the Binomial Theorem? How should I know? After all, I'm no genius-That's right, we were supposed to learn if.-oh, well-1X2-X15-what can we do with that? Are you CA + 23 asking me? How will we ever get through this class?-Another test Mon- day! just our luck. That takes care of this week-end-factor-32X5Y15 + 243Z14m--can we factor that thing?--I've never seen anything like that before-please explain the Factor Theorem again-do you multiply or add the exponents?-how do you extract the square root?-is it a plus or a minus?-read the answer again- Miss Faulkner, don't you feel so-o-o sorry for us poor students? What! just two weeks before exams! Time surely flies by. Study, study, study. What'll we do? What is the right answer?-Did you pass? Of course, I passed. Do you think I'm an idiot? fDon't answer thatlj What did I make? Seventy-five. And you? Oh, that's right, you're the genius in the class. Say you made seventy-five, huh? After the exam the Seniors finally realized that Miss Faulkner is honestly a swell teacher. Algebra is all right, too, since we don't have but one se- mester. To all graduating students we ask: To what do you attribute your great learning? Did you say, That's a tough question? ENGLISH This annual wouldn't be complete without first mentioning English. There comes a time in every high school graduate's life when he is forced to take Senior English. This eventful course started by our having to make a project. Remember those weird creatures lined up in the windows-Dolls dresesd as nuns and yeomen-posters-cardboard cathedrals? Why, Miss Watts, room was filled to the brim with projects. They were pretty good too except that the greenery in one kept wilting fwe should have put it in the rainj and people passing by often wondered if that rooster sitting on the wall were really alive. -Should that be a comma or a semi-colon?--Give the definition of a precis-a precis is a-ah-er-ah-that is not the correct answer-Literature -Beowulf-next six pages for Thursday-The Canterbury Tales-charac- terize the knight--Yes, I agree, Chaucer was a great writer. Now we reach the Elizabethan Age-how did the Reformation develop?-I forgot to study that!-Won't we ever finish this book? What next?', we asked ourselves. What could it be except that brave warrior, Macbeth? Who wrote it? The greaest man in English literature, William Shakespeare-What were the witches' prophecies?-how did they come true? All hail, Macbeth! -did we have to learn that memory work for today? We did!-- I dare do all that may become a man, who dares do more is none-I have lived long enough - What did you say?-Oh, just quoting Shakespeare. In case you want to live a little longer there is just one more-Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and to- morrow-What about tomorrow? But use had fum i KATHL RIN1. AnM1sTuAn, Pruphf-Irs: - 11 PROPHECY Whenever most of my friends see the sign Madam Nona-Your Business lit up in neon lights, they seldom stop to think of how I anticipated correctly many destinies of the 1949 Senior Class of Grainger High School, for ten years have passed since those bright- eyed girls and boys left us for an entirely new and different life . . . The year is now that of 1959. It's cold outside, so come on in. Let's sit around my crystal ball l and reminisce. Anyway, Ann Bennett and Joe Whaley are singing a duet from New York over the radio and I'm sure you'd like to hear them. Listen! Lloyd Whitfield Qhasn't he gone far-J is interrupting with a special news broadcast: Flash! The Croom-Grady North - Pole expedition has failed. The explorers have trudged four hundred D I M miles in the snow, causing Bobby to get such flat feet that Drs. Joe Aldridge and Z. A. Collins are joining the rescue squad just in case they are needed. Ah, yes. That was a forward class. Paul Cameron is now a suc- B cessful Southern planter. His colonial manor was designed by Architect Harvey Daw and furnished by Alan Heilig. Douglas Baker has gone North and is now known as Art Gum and his Rubber Band. Doug- las's vocalists are Sylvia Kanter, your Monday-nite Blues Singer, and C. Grady, raved- over crooner. Billy Page is president of a western university, the same college at which Billy Best is coaching baseball. Carl Bynum, noted motion picture producer, has just found a new male discovery, Lin- wood Sutton. Bobby Horton and Conrad Faulkner are owners of those famous chain stores, Posies and Fleeceworth's, managed by Bobby Quinn and Ruby Taylor. James Dail, Mur- ray Hill, James Murphy and Dal Foscue are well known business men, their affairs are man- aged by Attorney Bill Cole. Howard Farley is now an accomplished engineer. Byrd Hum- phreys is a baby photographer, his motto is Watch the Byrdie! Charlie Larkins is manufac- turer of Keep your tired, expired feet neatn shoes for car-less men. Freddie Williams is a beloved Kinston athletic director, and Sandy Peake is the recognized author of the romantic poem, An Hour's Conversation with a Dead Fish. Carroll Humphreys, who obeyed the old command, Go West, young man, is now a slow-drawling Texas cowboy, Helen Marie Aldridge's canned foods can now be found in most grocery stores under the name of Delightful Dinner Delicaciesf' Marilyn Avery, Louise Huffstetler, Edith Powell and Mildred Shackleford have taken marriage as their careers. Nancy Aldridge is also a believer in matrimony-she is wife of the future governor. Susan Batten is owner of an exclusive la- dies' ready-to-wear shop, Sue Spence, Dot Smith and Elneta McDuffy model her latest fashions designed by Patsy Crawford. Grace Blalock, Jeanne Carter and Grace Jones have gone into the teaching field. Penina Bowden is president of the Kinston Woman's Club. Ylanta Broadwell and Estelle Fuchs are established commercial artists. Ernestine Pate is editor of TIME maga- zine, Peggy Cauble, Virginia Gooding, Constance Millas and Edna Haddock are members of that worthy magazineis business staff. Eleanor Dixon, Alice Burkette, Bobbie Lou Creel, and Eloise Dorsey are all efficient big city stenographers. Nora Marie Hawkins is still doing worthwhile work with the Salvation Army. Betsy Britt's head is in the clouds these days, she's an air hostess with the Trans-Atlantic Airline. Libby Nooe's high school ambition to be a radio announcer has been fulfilled-Libby is nar- rating ghost stories over a nation-wide children's program. Jean Knott has become a direc- tor of religious education, though she is continuing her painting on the side. Frances Lonon has just turned author on us by writing How Crazy Can You Get? , a hilarious autobiog- raphy. Margie Ferrell has a two-time occupation, besides being a concert pianist, she is head of a lost and found department in hopes that she can find her voice which she lost while cheer leading at the 1948 football games. Thus-the fate of a class has proved full-full to overflowing with originality and talent which, aided by perseverance and hard work. spell success. And I put away my crystal ball and bid farewell with the pride in my heart mixed with sadness. For once-and no more-were we the youth- 1 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT STATE or NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY OI?
