O ij-Ofilck- Cyss VOLUME TWENTY-TWO 1947 Published By THE SENIOR CLASS OF GRAINGER HIGH SCHOOL Kinston, North Carolina O aij-O iick-C ss 1947 FOREWORD In graduation, the Senior Class of 1947 of Grainger High School has reached their long-sought goal. This goal — their first great challenge — is only the beginning of many they will seek as they enter into their chosen ways of life. Courage, Determination. Faith, and Honestry have made this prize theirs. Courage, Determination, Faith, and Honesty will carry them on to new victories. Underclassmen, your road to graduation may be long, bumpy, and impassable; or it may be short, smooth and accessable. Its surface depends upon the foundation that you, the constructors, build for it. You can make your foundation solid enough to withstand your loads and to carry you onward through life winning goal after goal. Page Two mi O xiij-Ofitck-C ss DEDICATION In grateful appreciation of her loyal service to our school and the sincere friendship and inter- est she has shown in each of us, we the class of 1947, proudly dedicate this, the twenty- second volume of the Kay-Aitch-Ess to MISS BERTHA MAE STROUD. Page Eighteen W7 ss LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT State of North Carolina, County of Lenoir, City of Kinston. We, the weak, shivering, graduating class (number 1,947) of Grainger (Sing Sing) High School, being of sound mind, despite four years of hard labor (?), do proclaim, with our gasping breath, this to be our last will and testament. We leave all the suspense and agony of last minute grades to the innocent juniors, next year ' s happy (heh, heh) seniors. Also we bequeath them our jailers, torture chambers, hot irons, racks, and other instruments of medieval torture. To the incoming juniors we leave our privilege to fall asleep in class and dodge homework, and see if they use this privilege as well as we did. To the sophomores we give the idea (which we used so well) of thinking they need no more studying and should graduate then and there. We also present to their teachers one bull whip to persuade them otherwise. We hand over our red eyes and sleepless nights to the freshmen. And to the seventh and eighth graders we leave the ability to bow and scrape before the upper-classmen; also unlimited amounts of chewing gum, candy, and peanuts to bestow on the aforementioned seniors. Cecil Roberts and R. A. Phillips hand over their broken noses to any willing football players. Mary Grace Grady bestows several cars upon Frances Carlton. Virginia Lewis, known as Fish , Louis (Boogie) Scott, and Buddy (Ba-a-a) Bowles leave unusual nicknames to Joe (Cobbie) Whaley, Bobby (Rabbi) Rasberry, and Lloyd (Pee Wee) Whitfield. To Joe Taylor and Fred Taylor, Jane Hart and John Langley bequeath their many and various offices. Sterling Gates and Bert Boney give their attraction to the opposite sex to Mac Croome and Dick Tyndall. To Mr. Booth, Mr. Mock, the faculty, and student body all the seniors leave their love and affection. In witness thereof we, the Senior Class of Grainger High School do set our seal to this our last will and testament, the fourth day of June, one thou- sand, nine hundred forty-seven. Manager Football Co-Captains of Annual Page Twenty-one CLASS PROPHECY O ij-O ilck-C ss mi One cold December night in 1957, I settled back in my favorite chair and prepared to enjoy a quiet evening at home. When I turned on the radio, 1 wasn ' t so surprised to hear the voice of that famous news commentator, Mardre Keel, but to hear him mention the names of so many of my former classmates greatly astonished me. First I heard the news concerning a South African hunting expedition, led by the world ' s greatest big game hunter. Palmer Sugg, accompanied by Elliot Brown, Calvin Casey, Bill Creech, Robert Lee Taylor, Lewis Gooding, and John Moseley, (who managed to tear himself away from his large and pros- perous farm long enough to make the trip.) Mr. Sugg has reported that by a marvelous coincidence he met those well known missionaries, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hargett (Helen Hill and Goo ), Buddy Bowles, and George DuBose. They also visited the rich tobacco plantation owner, George Southerland, before leaving for the heart of the African jungle. The trip was financed by multi- millionaire, Paul Lincke. Mr. Sugg ' s secretary, Ernestine Butner, has stated that he will visit his home town, and on the request of Mayor Guy Elliot, will display his many trophies. Next came the account of the important meeting of the National Medical Association, whose president is Dr. John Langley. Other members who took a leading part in the convention were Drs. Michael Sutton, Paul Bennett, and Rodolph Nunn; and Margie Buck, Mary Catherine Spence, Jessie Smith, and Evelyn Travis, all competent nurses. I also learned that my old friend, Betty Mewborn, now a brilliant dress designer, will exhibit her newest creations in New York next week. The clothes will be modeled by Marjorie Horne, Barbara Gates, Betsey Mallard, Geraldine Rodgers, Mollie Leggett, Margaret Boney, and Nellie Ruth Daw. Sketches of the styles by Eleanor Smith can be seen in the newest issue of the fashion magazine ALLURE, edited by Jane McDaniel and Faye Massengill. The beautiful new public library in Washington, D. C., built by contractor Linwood Ballard on property given to the city by Miss Joyce Dail, president of the Dail Shoe Company, will be open next week, Frances Everett, Jean Jenkins, Sophie Newman, and Audrey Price, chief librarians reported. Marvin Baker, famous for his bakery products, and LeRoy Batts, owner of a very prosperous dry cleaning company, contributed money to the book fund. Page Twenty-two mi OCay-Oj itck-C ' SS Hearing no more new of rhy friends, I turned the dial to another station, and heard the lamiliar voice of Bertram Hart, announcing a panel discussion between teachers Jane Hart, Mildred Sugg, Frances Bizzell, and Patricia Sut- ton, Professors Edward Britt and Hilary Daugherty, (who has revolutionized geometry by discovering a method, very unique and complicated, but never- theless a method, for trisecting an angle), and the much quoted lecturess, Jeanne Ramsey. They all contributed interesting ideas on the subject of How Can We Promote a Better Educational System in America? In the weeks to come listeners will hear talks delivered by those outstanding preach- ers, Bert Boney, Owen Fitzgerald, and Charles Wellons. The musical program I heard combined the talents of singers Louis Scott, Susan Davis, and Virginia Lewis, with Alma Jenkins ' orchestra, featuring Pryor C. Mixon and his drums. The guest star was America ' s No. 1 Comedian, Skippy Larkins. This program was sponsored by the makers of Malloy and Martin Coffee. The owners of the company, Mr. Donald Malloy and Mr. Billy Martin were supposed to appear in person to present prizes to the writers of the six best letters recommending the use of the product; but since neither was able to come, the awards were presented by Mr. Malloy ' s private secretary. Miss Ruth Seymour. The winners, who were all housewives, were, (before their marriage), Mary Bryan Cummings, Mildred Creel, Verla Lee Capps, Daphne Mills, Audrey Ferris, and Mary Pearson. Eager to hear all the news of the sports world, I was delighted when Bill Stapleford ' s Sports Review came on the air. Bill introduced two prominent football coaches, R. A. Phillips and Sterling Gates, who made interesting comments on the most exciting games of recent weeks and predicted the possible outcomes of several future games. Margaret Leach, one of the few well known women basketball coaches, also on the program, outlined a few important points on How To Be a Good Basketball Player. At 10:30 I heard the Academy Award Winners, Jenelle Spear and Cecil Roberts, dramatizing for radio listeners the best movie of the year. The Open Window, a Watson Bros, picture (David and Paul) produced by Jimmy Brooks and directed by Mary Grace Grady. After the end of this thrilling play, which convinced me again that crime doesn ' t pay, I cut off my radio and sat thinking about what I had heard. How wonderful to be able to hear about all my friends on the radio! It seems almost like a dream. Maybe it was, but if so, it is certainly one I ' ll never forget.
