We, the lucky few” of the graduating class of 1946, a little doubtful of our knowledge but full of hopes for the future, do hereby declare this our last will and testament. We, having served our stretch in this institution, wish to dispose of our rights, possessions, and privileges in this manner. To Mr. Booth and Mr. Mock, in return for their help all these years (six for some of us), our sincere thanks. The faculty receives our gratitude for so earnestly attempting to make us, at least, look intelligent. To the class of 1947 we leave our luxurious apartments, numbers 22 and 3 3. To the incoming Juniors we bequeath the privilege of planning and financing the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. To the incoming Sophomores we leave the suggestion that they start to bring apples to the math, language, and science teachers. To the Freshmen-to-be we will the ability of remaining confused for the first six months. John Cameron leaves his adhesive tape to next year’s football team. Gloria Foxman’s precious bottle of peroxide will go to all who have the faintest hope of becoming a blonde. Virginia Jenkins wills her phonograph to the future cats” of G. H. S. Gene Leigh’s energy” goes to next year’s cheerleaders. Anne Gray bequeathes her reckless driving to any daring Freshman desiring to have a driver’s permit. Charles Jordan leaves his love of geometry to all the poor Juniors. Paul Tilghman’s dimples are to be distributed among the student body. Franklin Scarborough wants his love for country life to be left to all the city slickers.” In witness whereof we of the Senior Class of Grainger High School do set our seal to this our last will and testament on this, the fourth day of June, one thousand, nine hundred forty-six. Gloria Foxman, Evelyn Griffin, Testatrices. Page Nineteen 9 CLASS PROPHECY One winter afternoon in 1956, I leaned back in the chair behind the desk in the office I occupied as editor of Life and Actions Magazine and looked over the latest edition of my favorite journal, which had just come off the press. It seemed that I had finally succeeded in getting almost all of my old classmates into the book. From the cover, the smiling face of cover-girl Annie Edwards lighted the dimly-lit room, and, as I turned the page, I saw a picture of the ultra-modern bridge, designed by those engineer wizards, Flerbert Whitifield, Charles Jordan, and Charles McLawhorn, advertising the Strongest-Yet Steel Company, owned and operated by Lawrence Thomas and Lynwood Haddock. In the feature department, were two stories, The Starving Journalist” and A Romance Gone But Not Forgotten,” by Pulitzer-Prize winner Blanche Parrott; an article on How to Keep the Dead from Dying” by Cathrine Linton, M.D.; a biographical sketch of the missionary to Mars, Robbie Best; and a series of pictures depicting the life of and riots caused by the new swoon-crooner, Sleepy” Leigh. Farther back was the section, The Home of Today and Tomorrow,” edited by Anne Gray, and following that, the Fashion Parade,” edited by Barbara Boncy, and includ- ing clothes designed by Virginia Jenkins and Peggy Lyon. Flipping several more pages, I saw that Evelyn Griffin and her music classes were gracing the feature, America’s Public Schools,” that month, and the photographer of these popular, monthly picture-stories was still Gloria Foxman. At that point I was interrupted by my private secretary and companion, Maybelle Walker, who wanted to tell me that Dr. Roland Collins and her two lab technicians, Bernice Bronstein and Virginia Hubbard, would be glad to take dinner with us the next evening and bring their dates, Graham Knott, attorney-at-law, Paul Lincke, rich playboy and half-owner of the national string of super-markets, Grady and Lincke,” and Copie Hill, a Lieutenant-General in the U. S. Army. That was good news, for we hadn’t seen any of them since Mary Frances Shackelford and her rich farmer husband were in town three months before. Maybelle also wanted to remind me that I had an appointment at my hair-dresser, Mildred Hill’s (alias Mademoiselle Miltree) in forty-five minutes. Rather annoyed at the untimely interruption, I turned back to Life and Actions as soon as the door closed and found myself staring at a full page ad of Madge McDuffy’s new Broadway hit, Melancholy Babe,” starring Jimmy Broadwell and Mary Ann Moore. The article stated that Ervin Wade was in charge of the props, and Mary Lena Page T wenty Byrd designed all the scenery. Mary Lena had just opened an art exhibit of her pic- tures, which were quite the rage of the New York smarter set. The next page to catch my eye was an ad for a new motion picture, Southern Hay.” John Cameron and Faye Rodgers were cast as the stars of the popular show. The shooting of the film took place on Franklin Scarborough’s plantation just outside Kinston, North Carolina. The picture was based on the book Southern Hay” by Herbert Ram- sey, the movie-script having been prepared by Levie Peyton and revised by Doris Teachey. Faye’s gowns of pre-Civil W ar fashion were designed by Mary Lou Goers, her make-up having been created by Vera Stroud. The production, according to press- agent Billy Gower, was destined to be a colossal hit. A beauty article Beauty Through Physical Fitness,” by the physical education authority, Jean Hamilton, followed. It was illustrated by Joyce Basden, whose model was Hilda Grace Lee. The next page contained an ad drawn up by the William White Advertising Agency of cream guaranteed to keep dimples soft and round. The cream was prepared by Cullen Daughety and demonstrated by Paul Tilghman. A smaller ad on that page told of the opening of Miss Sutton’s Business School. I knew that my old friend. Nan Wood, was head of the best business school in New York, but I was surprised to see that Sarah Whaley and Oleene Fordham were teachers there. The last I had heard from them, they were instructors in the commercial depart- ment of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. Finishing the journal, I closed the cover, and saw an action picture of athlete Jesse Aldridge, professional league player. He was modeling for an advertisement of the Carlyle Stroud Sports Goods. It really seemed familiar to see him in sports togs! After this pleasant hour I felt as if I had actually been talking with my dear old classmates. As I leaned back, I thought about all the changes that had taken place in those last years, and I felt old — so old that I got up and rau out of the office! I wanted to get away from the fact that we were all grown now, and successful. I wanted to imagine us back in G. H. S. where we spent so many pleasant hours. So I left to keep my appointment and talk over the old times with Mildred. Cathrine Linton, Emma Faye West.
