A school tax levy had recently been rejected by the patrons of the Grain Valley, and therefore plans were being made for drastic cuts in the school budget. Such cuts included teachers, classes, and extra-curricular activities. Later it was decided to have a second voting in Iune. This school tax levy passed by an overwhelm- ing majority and erased many fears about the upcoming school year. Since then various improvements have taken place at Grain Valley High School After ten years of growing with the same superin tendent we saw Dr Headley resign from the pos1 t1on Mr Donald Johnson filled the vacancy for the job of superlntendent for most of the 1980 81 scho J.-aff' -Nw, Improvements were made in the way of mainte- nance as walls and doorways were painted, electric- ity was run to the football field, and new carpeting was laid on the stairs of the junior high building. Also, a spraying room was added onto the shop room in order to alleviate dangerous lacquer fumes that had been spreading through the school. Grain Valley purchased three new computers, as computer classes were added to the high school cur- riculum. ' - The girls' varsity basketball team advanced into the 2 A state quarter-finals going further than any girls basketball team 1n the history of Grain Valley. Six new teachers joined the school system. They along with the veteran teachers helped instill pride and spirit in the GV.H.S. students as they taught 01 them not only about the required subjects but also Year about life and themselves. 4! But all were exuberant when the 52 American hostages were released from Iran after 444 days in captivity. Indeed, Grain Valley has achieved many successes during the year. Therefore, hot air balloons have been chosen to convey a messagep although We may have had setbacks in the past, Grain Valley is defi- nitely HSOARING HIGHER. 11rW-'rm-f- ee- s . .. , 1 ' FT'5Ilu.. - 'Pm W ,. .fl QI. The second contest was held at St. Paul's and Lisa Eichenberger received second place with her entry in oratory. Even though the forensic class ended at semester, the mernbersicontinued to compete. The next event was the I-70 Spring Conference. The one act play, Summer People,'f consisting of six forensic mem- bers, received third place for their endeavors. Deadwood Gulch, a thriving mining town, is harrassed by a Robin Hood of the Black Hills, Deadwood Dick. As the play opens we find that Deadwood has not only held up the stage,.but kidnapped a beautiful girl, Rose Blossom. As a re- sult Rose's innocent blind sister, Lily, is left alone in the saloon. Blackman Redburn decides he will take care of Lily-but only because he believes that the map to the blossom mine is branded upon her back. What follows are cases of mistaken identity, duels, and of course, romance. In the end, we find that good triumphs once again, over evil. The play was presented to the public on April 30, 1981. Miss Holman, director of the play, was presented a cake and a plaque displaying the members of the cast. Having a melodrama play this year, instead of the traditional comedy, turned out successful, as a S310 profit was made. Persons enrolled in the crafts and 3-D class kept very busy, es- pecially during the spring. The student body chose one design that they wanted to be painted on the lunchroom wall. Bob Hendrickson's design was cho- sen and class members painted this on the wall. Crafts and 3-D members also painted the set that was used for the spring play. Individual talent shined as four oil paintings placed in a Warrensburg showing. Out of 2, 000 entries, only 400 won blue, red, or white ribbons. Four en- tries from Grain Valley were among those few. Iill Grehlein won a red and white ribbon for her oil paintings. Norma Schwartz and Michelle Mershon both received white ribbons. Students in junior and senior high enjoyed working on projects such as pottery, paper sculptures, silk screening, Old English lettering, and a variety of other projects. Chosen projects made through- out the year were displayed in the art case in the gym lobby. Family, members of the commu- nity, and friends had a chance to see the year's best art Works at the PTA meeting on April 16, 1981. On April 29, these artists took a field trip to Kansas City. They visited the Nelson Art Gallery and took a walking tour of the Plaza area to see the statues and fountains. 48l ART ml. .. - W ,- .x gg-L V y, .fl 1 3 s 12 Students paint design on the lunchroom wall. 22 Mitch Blanton paints his model airplane a bright red color. 32 Craft and 3-D students listen and work intently, while Mrs. Burnett explains some- thing. 42 Art students paint on the set for the spring play. ,I 'WSL XX Tx X , x 1 N tw K., . , 1 .. The squad, that was made up of mostly rookie members, proceeded to work very hard through the sum- mer and into the football season. In the summer, the football cheerleaders, plus the basketball cheerleaders, held practice sessions twice a week to develop their skills. They also held three car washes in order to raise money for cheerleading camp. Iune 28 through Iuly 3 the foot- ball and basketball cheerleaders at- tended the International 501 CHEERLEADERS Cheerleading Foundation camp in Lawrence, Kansas. There they in- creased their knowledge and skills in various areas. They won a spirit frisbee on the first day of camp. During the four days that fol- lowed, the cheerleaders were also awarded a creativity ribbon, a spar- kle and shine ribbon, a first place for excellence, and second place in Grand Champs. During the football season the cheerleaders tried to instill spirit in the students as they held pep rallies and cheered for the jayvee and varsity football teams. 12 Suzanne Quick and Cindy Hulett pose for the camera. 3 www mxbig zfgjf 1'Q, 1 UM N49 'ev' N Q f V 5-,MQW l.,-2: 4 . Winning the conference championship for the fourth straight year was one reason for such success. Highlights of the season were Tom Amor rush- ing for 1,802 yards, leading the state in rushing and setting ,a new school record, and Keith Fenton breaking the school record for most tackles in a season. The six seniors of the 1980 squad ended a very rewarding career. These seniors played on teams that won 23 out of 24 conference games and were 31-6 during their four years of football. The coaching staff is extremely proud of the way our players worked over the season. A lot of time, hard work, and personal sacrifices had to be given to achieve success. I.V. Eagles run to set up their defense. The Iunior Varsity Eagles completed their season with a 32-28 win over Concordia. It was their third win in the last four games and it enables them to fin- ish at .500 with a 7-7 record. It was a satisfying year for first year coach Dave Owen. We established our goals early and I felt if we would work as hard as we could everyday we would improve our play each game and have a successful year. After a tough start the 0-3 Eagles rebounded with two straight wins and a second place finish in the Orrick Tournament. Other highlights included a double OT win over Sweet Springs and in upset victory over C10-lj Barstow. The Eagles were led in scoring and rebounding by Del Iohnson who averaged 11 points per game and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Wes Barnett led an improved de- fense in steals and constantly harassed opponents with his quickness and ball handling ability. The improved play of guard Clete Brown, and forwards Eric Cross, Tim Anderson and freshman Brent Thompson contrib- uted greatly to a very rewarding season. However, the new members were able to quickly fill many of the vacant slots- i and then some. New school records were set in the ,qi 100 meter dash and the 3200 meter run. Our 800 me- Mmu ter relay team finished second at the Cass-Midway I A Relays. Each of these events were run by team mem- 4 bers new to the track team this season. We were a K young team, also, with 11 out of 15 members being sophomores or freshman. The year was memorable and enjoyable for me, as I hope it was for the members of the team. It was a pleasure working with them and I appreciated the opportunity to do so. I am sure that next year will be even more rewarding. Many changes have been made in the seventh graders' lives as they have moved up from elementary school to junior high. Recesses have been changed to four minute breaks between classes. Sitting in the same classroom has been changed to moving to seven different classes during the day, and having one teacher has ,been changed to hav- ing seven different teachers. Seventh grades have also gotten into the swing of the junior high by getting involved in activities such as volleyball or football, basketball, mu- sic contests, track events, selling M 8: M's, and putting on a dance for the eighth graders. HIGH TRACK! 101 As the freshmen look back on their first year of high school, many memories will probably come to mind. The freshmen class members survived the remarks of the upperclassmen. They joined various clubs and activities and came together as a group, to among other things, build their homecoming float and yell for their class in spirit contests. The many memories of the freshmen's first year of high school will always be remembered and trea- sured. 11 Funny face! Z! Well as the week progressed and came to its end, the girls I didn't know became my friends, and the study of government became exciting and fascinating. With political campaigns, party rallies, elections, and the entire government system, I found little time to write home or to catch up on my sleep. But, I will always have the time to look back on my at- tendance at Missouri Girls State. Whether you left with tears in your eyes or just a smile on your face, I think everyone there did leave with the pride of being a Mis- souri citizen and a better knowledge of our government system. I'd like to extend my appreciation to those who made this week possible for me, and to the next girl who gets the honor to attend MGS: get to know everyone there and get as involved as you can and you'll have the best time of your life. Sincerely, Lisa Eichenberger Mo. Girls State 1980 Session 124! SENIORS I was deeply honored to have this privilege of attending Mis- souri Boys' State. Boys from all parts of Missouri would be attend- ing this fine conference that the American Legion organized. Missouri Boys' State is a program designed to enlighten the young men of Missouri on how our government functions. The eight days spent, were filled with excitement, friendship, and learning. It brings 960 young men together to participate at all levels of government: to form a Boys' State . I would like to express my deep appreciation to those sponsor- ing me to attend Boys' State. It was an experience I will cherish and honor and never forget. I wish it was possible for more young men to participate, and have the same wonderful exper- ience that I had at Missouri Boys' State. Sincerely, Eric Headley Boys' State Representative 1980 Session I: CD no Girls and Boys State Girl: Attending Missouri Boy's State was a memorable experience and one that I treasure. It was a lot of hard work, but the final outcome was well worth the effort. Missouri Boy's State is a program whose purpose is to edu- cate young men about governmental processes through actual experience. 960 boys come together and form an entire state government, beginning at the city level. There are demonstra- tions, athletic programs, and assemblies where high state offi- cials speak. In addition, we were required to take a class con- cerning a certain area of the government. In summary, I would have to say that it was one of the most Outstanding learning experiences I have encountered, and I want to express my deep appreciation for those who were re- sponsible for sending me. Since the number of boys that can attend is limited, I challenge the next Boy's State delegates to make good use of this honor. That's how you might start to summarize the senior's last year. It seems like they only started high school yesterday. It's not possible that they could be the next in line to graduate from G.V.H.S. This year the senior class has almost 52,000 over from last year's money-making projects. They decid- ed to buy the senior pages in the yearbook. The pages they bought are in color. They also paid for the seniors' caps and gowns for graduation. These are the two major projects the senior class took on this year. For the most part, the seniors' last year was fun and exciting, but also sad. Even though the Class of '81 has graduated, memories of good times will still remain. i 12 What's this, Steve, a new dance step? 22 Senior class officers: Presi- dent-Bruce Merslion, Vice-President-Kim Lynch, Secretary-Doug Fry, Treasurer-Sheila Heard. 31 Now that she's a senior woman, Kim has fi- nally learned how to tuck her shirt in. 42 Tammy Quick wore a dress??!! 128 I SENIORS he Courageous Graduate ll L The month of August 1979, was a most tragic month for Mike Peters and many of his friends and family. Mike was in a freak accident that left most of his body paralyzed. But this didn't hamper his desire to keep trying. ln the last two years, the senior class has held sever- al benefit games and taken part in fund raising projects for Mike. He was able to attend one o the games. lt was sponsored by the Kansas City Chie s Football Club. They took part in a basketball game against the Kansas City Media, which consisted of area television and radio personalities. It was exciting to see the celebrities and get their autographs, but the biggest celebrity there was Mike himself. Another game was held at the Grain Valley High School gym. It was the KBEQ radio D.I.'s verses the G.V. faculty. At the end of the game, the senior class handed a thirteen hundred dollars check to Mr. 8 Mrs. Peters to help with the many expenses involved. Another game for Mike that was held in the fall of 1980 was an alumni football game. Several graduates of Grain Valley played a football game against each other for Mike's benefit. These were a few things we felt we could do for Mike as a class and school. Since his unfortunate acci- dent, Mike has made tremendous progress. He has been able to do things the doctors first thought were impossi- ble. The seniors have given Mike a class ring this year as Mike has continued his education with a private tutor. He graduated with the senior class of '87. We wish Mike the best, as he will always remain our friend, and will be remembered in our hearts. SENIORS! 129 Here Today, Gone Tomorrow At as early as 6:30 p.m., May 11, 1981, relatives and friends were col- laborating in the gymnasium to save unoccupied seats. During this time, the seniors met in the home economics room. There they put on their caps and gowns, talked with friends, and began to think about the ceremonies. Fellow seniors applauded Mike Peters as he wheeled himself into the room, tattired in a light blue tuxedo. They they gathered around Mike to converse with him. Mr. Burns then placed the graduation cap on Mike's head. Shortly thereafter, the seniors started down the hall toward the now- packed gymnasium. The audience rose to their feet as the graduation processional began. Mike Peters led the class down the aisle as flashbulbs popped and cameras clicked all around. The other fifty three graduates filed in by couples, and took their -places on the stage. The special girls' music was provided by six senior girls, and was fol- lowed by the salutatorian speech, given by Karen Nelson Smith, and the valedictorian speech, given by Doug Fry. I Mr. Burns proceeded to announce the seniors, starting with Mike Pe- ters, who received a warm standing ovation. Mr. Rupp, school board president, presented the seniors with their diplomas among applause. Mr. Lossing gave each senior a red rose as they descended the stairs to the gym floor. ' Turning tassles and rings made the graduating ceremonies official. Mr. Burns then announced the seniors as the graduated class of 1981. After the recessional, seniors formed a reception line outside the high school building, which soon turned into small clusters .of congratulating family and friends. . 1 30 I GRADUATION 2 . Students that signed up for third hour journal- ism class, soon found that the class required more time than they had previously believed. Beside doing assigned yearbook pages and newspaper articles, students also sold advertise- ments for the newspaper and yearbook, took pic- tures, and sold m 8: m's for the many expendi- tures encountered. Prior to school beginning, Nancy Kolster, yearbook editor, and Marianne Fry, yearbook as- sistant editor, attended an Inter Collegiate Press week-long workshop. There they learned layout techniques, copywriting rules, and theme idea, among other things. When school began, the editors applied these principals to the almost-all rookie journalists to in- crease their knowledge of yearbook production. This year the yearbooks were increased to the price of eleven dollars. During the sales week, the journalism class presented a slide show to the stu- dent body in order to increase yearbook sales. Six newspaper publications were distributed at various times throughout the school year. Mari- anne Fry was the editor of the 1980-81 Eagles' Cry. Overall, the journalism department was successful in HSOARING HIGHER with their accomplish- ments. IOURNALISM! 167 HU'P 'Y ' .T ' ' J-fm' F 1:57 , vzapai-W , NA-.
