These underwent much change this year. Besides losing several teachers, the stu- dent population was down as well. This resulted in the streamlining of the various academic departments. Despite this, new and interesting courses, such as theater and computer science, were offered. Also, due to the new requirements for graduation and the scholars' program, many students were encouraged to try a variety of interesting and enriching sub- jects. Thus, through the efforts of the teachers, faculty, and students, an enjoy- able and useful educational program, which encouraged excellence, was of- fered this year. X School is more than books its also a hands-on experience, Nw-.m..,,,,-----Q.-J An au courant Wendell Staton shows Monique May the latest fashions. f 57 Most of the sports programs changed drastically at Graham this year. Many old coaches left while new ones came. This resulted in a great change in the philos- ophy and execution of certain sports. De- spite or because of this, more students partcipated in them, and cheered for them than, it seemed, had ever before. The most radical changes probably oc- curred in three sports. The defending State 3-A Champions found their former assistant coach taking the place of their departed mentor. The football team had an entirely new coaching staff to get to know. And the wrestling team fell under a new coach and the curse of BURPlES . Undaunted, members of these, and all, sports strove to succeed with fire and de- termination. The loss and replacement of a principal and several teachers has a profound af- fect on a school. When this happened at Graham this year, it made things a little awkward. lvlr. Dixon had to adjust to lead- ing a high school for the first time, while students had to adjust to a thoroughly different principal than the one they were used to. Everyone got used to new rules and policy changes. This could have caused confusion and conflict, but it didn't. The whole spiri' of the year was exemplified by the way that the faculty and the students took the changes, not as a burden, but as an opportunity. Even the many new teachers, trying to get ad- justed to a new situation and work with an also somewhat off-balance student body, did their jobs admirably. 3 CAN'T YCDU SEE IT NGW . . f H2 S1 THESE BABY FACES ON BBOADVVAY? The day we had the parade it was cold and rainy. The parade was held down Main Street and ended up at Graham Middle School. Graham played Eastern Ran- dolph and lost. That was a sad day for us. But we did get off to a great start during halftime. Kristi Dry was crowned Home- coming Queen for 1983-84. Also during halftime the judges announced the win- ners of the float competition. The Sopho- mores won. Their theme was from the sto- ry book character ET . This is the first time the Senior float did not win. Afterwards a dance was held in the gym. The disc jockey was Boo Baron from WEAL out of Greensboro. This was a night everyone will remember. Their senior gift exemplifies this. Rather than getting something merely decorative, they opted to get something useful: ceiling fans in the cafeteria to alleviate the summer heat and winter cold. A better example of their compassion is their treatment of Tim Oli- ver. A terrible wasting disease had ren- dered Tim unable to attend school. Cou- rageously, however, he strove to finsh the year on Homebound. Touched and im- pressed, the seniors bought Tim's class ring and presented it to him at an assem- bly. SENIORS DOLLS OF 84 36 JUNIOHS - CLASS GF 1985 By the time young adults reach their junior year in high school they have taken on many responsibilities perhaps the greatest project undertaken was prepar- ing for the Junior-Senior Prom. To help pay for the prom, members of the class of 1985 sold doughnuts and rattled off an Atari computer. Before prom preparations began, most juniors purchased class rings, took the PSAT, and received their class rankings. This year, forthe first time, one of the top ten juniors was selected to compete for a trip to Washington, D.C. An essay written by Treva Spellman, was chosen out of the nine submitted to represent Graham High School. In interviews about current events, Treva was selected over three other students from the county schools, to attend the workshops. The seminar in Washington, D.C. was sponsored by the Hoffman-LaFioche Company. The class of 1985 should feel good about their accom- plishments. When they look back on their high school years, they can feel a sense of pride and remember the anticipation of becoming seniors. Junior class officers: Melisa Seto, Secretaryg Wendy Hanford, Treasurerg Teresa Call, President, Ruth Agner David Albritton Jeff Allen Treva Spellamn takes time out from her busy sched ule to run a spotlight for the Miss GHS Pageant. The Sophomore year is one of the most exciting years of school. All kinds of neat things are going on and all of a sudden you are right in the middle of it all. There are the Homecoming activities and the Miss G.l-l.S. Pageant. As a Sophomore you will receive one of the most important things in life, a driver's license. However, the most exciting day will come when the halls seem a little less crowded, the noise level is a little softer, and someone will whisper that the Seniors are gone, and then we'll be Juniors. .l f n g W 2, f s f A-L T?::'i lxf' X, 'N-, iff ' . Q FRESH l Freshmen Class Officers Tracy Boggs-Sec., Sherry Tate-Treas., Brandy Hanford-Vice Pres., Marie Mangione-Pres. Despite being the largest Freshmen s class in many years, the class has really adjusted to high school. The first day was s hectic for them. Some of them could not find their classes. The upper olassmen understood their problem because they had the same ones when they first came to the high school. But now, as the year progresses, they are getting used to it. When the freshmen came here they were scared, they had heard of a freshmen day where they would get garbage-canned by an upper classmeng but, that did not hap- pen this year. The olasses have changed tremen- clously. Now the freshmen have to have twenty units instead of eighteen to gradu- ate. Also, when they take the Competen- cy Test, they will have to do some writing, along with math and reading. Good luck to the freshmen class. You have just begun. You have got a long ways to go before you become 'tSeniors of 1987? l S Rod Carter and Lester Hester learn the freedom ofa high school cafeteria. After Mr. Jackson left, it took a while to find a new band director. The band didn't think they were even going to get a season started. Our new director was Mr. Albea, and some people weren't used to him, but others gave him a chance to prove himself. The Marching band didn't go to any competitions this year, but it will go next year. They marched in the Graham Homecoming Pa- rade, the Burlington Christmas Parade, but did not march in the Graham Christ- mas Parade. The Marching band is going to attend Marching Band Camp in Virgin- ia, this summer. The 1984-1985 season should be much better than the one they had this season. 105 '84 I-IAS DEVILS JUMPING . . . Judging from the 4-5-1 record of the young team and the excellent records of some individuals, he succeeded. This success came from many sources: from hard, hard practices, from going to tournaments and from holding their own fthe only one in Graham historyi, from training films, from visiting coaches, and from team activities like helping the boosters' club.
