EASTERN 14-0 With the air of taking over where they stopped last year, the '65 squad of Red Devils started on their march by belting the Eastern Eagles 14-0. Tony Capillary claimed the first TD of the year when he caught a twenty-five yard pass from Sammy Bowland. Moser scored the second TD on a one yard plunge, and Wightman kicked two suc- cessful extra points. The Devil defense held the Eagles to a mere forty-nine yard total for the night. GRAHAM VS. HILLSBOROUGH 17-12 The Panther invasion found the Red Devil defense hard to run against, so the Panthers started filling the air with aerials. In the first play of the second quarter, Heffner hit Teer for the bomb; and as the extra point failed, the Pan- thers led 6-0. But not giving up, the Devils came right back as Sammy Bow- land skipped across the goal line from two yards out and Wightman converted for a 7-6 lead at the half. In the third quarter the Panthers again connected for the bomb that ended the scoring for the night as the extra point failed. 91 GRAHAM VS. WESTERN 0-7 For the third straight year, the second game of the season spelled dis- aster for the Red Devils. The second half brought out a new Devil team which controlled the rest of the game but just couldn't get on the score board. The tying TD was scored by Bill Thacker in the third quarter but was called back for a clipping penalty, and the heart- breaking game ended Graham-0, West- ern-7. GRAHAM VS. MOREHEAD 34-12 The shorter the season grew the more important each game became to the Devils. And this one was no exception. The game with the Panthers brought out the true ''Devil''in the G.H.S. squad as the team cameto life. Scoring in allfour quarters, the Devils romped over Morehead 34-12. Those proud scorers were as follows: Bowland, who collected two TDs; Moser, who drove in for one TD; Drumwright, who gathered in one TD; Garner, who also added his one TD; and Wightman, who converted four extra points. 92 GRAHAM VS. SOUTHERN 7-0 Despite two straight, hearbreaking losses, the mighty Devils overcame a stubborn Confederate de- fense and pulled out a 7-0 victory. The only score of the game resulted froma long drive in the third quarter, following a Confed punt. Gary Moser plug- ged out two desperate yards for the only TD of the night. Then David ''The Toe'' Wightman added the extra point as the scoring ended. GRAHAM VS. YANCEYVILLE 26-7 Mud and rain, rain and mud, and more rain brought far from good playing conditions for the Devils in Yanceyville. But this did not stop them. They came out cold, wet, muddy, and victorious. Moser collected two TDs; Epps, one TD; and Bow- land, one TD. Wightman found it impossible to kick the wet pigskin through the uprights after his first two attempts failed. Moser and Capillary each col- lected an extra point for the score board. a : aoe Rien 3 L969 : S = S) S S GRAHAM VS. REIDSVILLE 21-7 In more than one way this game was important to the raging Devils. They had to win to remainin contention for the conver- ence crown, and they hadto win simply be- cause it was Homecoming '65. And win they did. The Graham Devils scoredonce in each of thefirst three quart- ers. The Graham scorers were Capillary, Moser, and Bowland, each scoring one TD; and Wightman came through with three straight extra points. GRAHAM VS. MT. AIRY 14-0 This was the game. Graham had to win to have any possible chance for the conference crown. The fired-up Devil defense sparkled as they put on the finest exhibition of the season. It could be said that the defense literally wonthe ballgame. Firing through like a shot out of a cannon, Sammy Epps blocked two Bear punts which resulted in thetwo Devil TDs. After the first blocked punt, Moser plunged over for the score. The second blocked punt was recovered in the end zone by Jimbo Allen. Both extra points were con- verted by Wightman. As the game ended, Coach Heck- man had won his last home game. GRAHAM VS. GIBSONVILLE 33-6 The last game of the regular season came with a non-conference foe. Thescore provedthat the Dev- ils really played like devils. Not a single first team player played inthe second half. Moser collected one TD in the first quarter and two inthe second. The third quarter was scoreless for the Devils, but they came roaring back in the fourth quarter with two more TDs. These were scored by Brown and Robertson. To round out the scoring, Wightman addedthree extra points. 95 GRAHAM VS. MADISON-MAYODAN 27-6 The last conference game of the year came with the Falcons of Madison-Mayodan. The weather was almost unbearablycold, but after the Devils got warmed up, there was no stopping them. Scores by quarters were as follows: first quarter, Moser one TD; second quarter, Ellingtonone TD, Burch one TD; and the l ast TD was made in the third quarter by Drumwright. Wightman put his toe in the pigskin for three extra points. With the ending of this game, Coach Heck- man had won his first championship in eleven years. Waynesville Plas On November 20, 1965, Waynesville and Graham met for the first round of the Regional Two Play-offs. The offense performed badly during the first half, while the defense held Waynesville to six points. The second half saw the offense score four TDs. The first score came withatwenty yardpass from Bowland to Capillary. The next score came when Bowland went over right tackle on his way toa forty-six yard TD jaunt. After Wightman split the uprights, Graham led by seven points. Graham's next score came when Moser crossed over from the one yard line. The final score came when Bowland hit Epps in the end zone. Wightman's kick ended the scor- ing. Finalscore: Graham 26, Waynes- ville 6, JS On November 25, 1965, before nearly 4,000 fans, Western and Graham battled for the regional championship. For George Heckman, this wasa climax to his coaching career. For the second consecutive game the offense performed badly during the first quarter. Asthegame progressed, however, the defense began holding and the offense began to move. Western scored twice in the first half. The Devil's lone TD came from a pass toCapillary from Moser. Full- back Moser returned the secondhalf kickoff eighty-five yards for the second TD. Bowland hit Capillary for the third TD. Wightman's placement was good andthe score became 20-12. Two plays after aninterception, Bowland again hit Capillary forthe final TD. Wightman's kick was good.
