The Forty-Niners O many, the year nineteen-thirty-seven is a number of forgotten experiences, but to us of the present senior class it glows brightly as the year which held our first school days. Yes, as well remembered as yesterday is that September morning upon which a hundred and thirty of us, some tearfully, embarked upon the journey known as education. That first year we learned to read with the speed at which a snail crawls, and write in letters whose breadth rivaled the Mississippi. NVe also, under the patient leadership-and often painful correction-of Mrs. Wilson, Miss Browning, and Miss Bowden, learned to enter the Cafeteria in an orderly manner. Our second year we were given our first workbooks, which made us feel a bit like high school students. In the third grade we met nothing less than multiplication tables. These we mastered, a bit slowly, perhaps, but surely. There are few, if any, of us who can't recall a paddling at the hand of Miss McIntyre or both hands of Miss Cox. Tom Welch and Jean White came to Graham School just in time to share these acquisitions with us. Geography was presented very clearly by Miss Pomeroy and Mrs. McClean who were at our service in nineteen hundred and forty-one. The fifth grade slipped away swiftly, because a majority of it was spent in drawing, carv- ing wooden figurines, and making notebooks. Its hardest problem was learning to name the forty-eight states on a blank map. History of North Carolina was probably the favorite course of this period. When we entered second floor rooms as sixth graders, Elizabeth Pickard joined us. Thai year we played baseball and learned to march, above and beyond regular activities. Miss Neese, who has left behind her many burning palms and broken rulers, and Mrs Henderson were seventh to take charge of us. Unlike the previous year, the ball teams were evenly matched and there arose much laughter and debate on baseball. The outstanding achievements of this year were a map of Australia, made of plywood and plaster by Mrs I-Ienderson's class, and a nation picture produced by Miss Neese's artists of the day.
