' ,745 V' The Forty-Niners O many, the year nineteen-thirty-seven is a number of forgotten experiences, but to us of the present senior class it glows brightly as the year which held our first school days. Yes, as well remembered as yesterday is that September morning upon which a hundred and thirty of us, some tearfully, embarked upon the journey known as education. That first year we learned to read with the speed at which a snail crawls, and write in letters whose breadth rivaled the Mississippi. NVe also, under the patient leadership-and often painful correction-of Mrs. Wilson, Miss Browning, and Miss Bowden, learned to enter the Cafeteria in an orderly manner. Our second year we were given our first workbooks, which made us feel a bit like high school students. In the third grade we met nothing less than multiplication tables. These we mastered, a bit slowly, perhaps, but surely. There are few, if any, of us who can't recall a paddling at the hand of Miss McIntyre or both hands of Miss Cox. Tom Welch and Jean White came to Graham School just in time to share these acquisitions with us. Geography was presented very clearly by Miss Pomeroy and Mrs. McClean who were at our service in nineteen hundred and forty-one. The fifth grade slipped away swiftly, because a majority of it was spent in drawing, carv- ing wooden figurines, and making notebooks. Its hardest problem was learning to name the forty-eight states on a blank map. History of North Carolina was probably the favorite course of this period. When we entered second floor rooms as sixth graders, Elizabeth Pickard joined us. Thai year we played baseball and learned to march, above and beyond regular activities. Miss Neese, who has left behind her many burning palms and broken rulers, and Mrs Henderson were seventh to take charge of us. Unlike the previous year, the ball teams were evenly matched and there arose much laughter and debate on baseball. The outstanding achievements of this year were a map of Australia, made of plywood and plaster by Mrs I-Ienderson's class, and a nation picture produced by Miss Neese's artists of the day. The year 1965, I see the Graham High School Seniors of 1949. Flash! Jimmy Johnston, Republican President of the United States, is spending a week's vacation at his log cabin estate on the banks of the beautiful Haw River. . . Every time you hear that familiar phrase, There they go, you will know that Nancy Moore, the famous horse rancher, has added another pile of money to her bank account of millions. . . Mrs. Alex F. Goley, the former Barbara Hill, is spending the week end in Gra- ham with her parents. She is on the way to New York with her five little M.D.'s for a singing engagement at the Opera House. . . The old saying that if you work hard you will go places has come true. Kenneth Page is now manager of the Raylass Department Stores. . . Katrina Gillespie is the head nurse at the Alamance General Hospital. . . Betty Lee Fargis has been promoted to manager of the Rose's Dime Stores in this county. . . Flash! That grand old man of baseball, Jack Cathey, has just finished his fifteenth successive season with the New York Yankees. . . Doris Toney has finally hooked her old flame. She is now the wife of the owner of a large grocery store. . . Smoke gets in your eyes : For a man that doesn't smoke, J. W. Sharpe is sure raising a lot of tobacco on his tobacco farm. . . Betty jean Linens is making a tour of the United States following her Army husband. . . Tom Foust is now the sole owner of the Hardee's Esso Service Station. . . Good News: Elizabeth Pickard and Lucy Via, after being successful secretaries for the past twelve years, have opened a secretarial school to teach others the trade. . . Creamy News: Bobby Joe Moser has more cows on his three dairy farms than Carter has little liver pills. . . Joretta Tysor is now the dean of Woman's College. . . Flash! The famed author, Claude Davis, has just finished his latest book, an auto- biography named Whing-ding. . . They tell me Billie Jean Johnson is making a big success as a housewife. . . Peggy Core seems to be doing -1318 B4- pretty well since she married a bank president. . . Now that Spike .jones and his City Slickers have been forgotten, everyone should hear the new band that has taken his place, Pudd Cheek and his White's Hill Rinky Dinks. . . Annie Mae Sharpe and Betty Jane Adkins are running a dress shop in Saxapahaw. . . Auman Hunter is now the supervisor of the Colo- nial Stores of North Carolina. . . Attention Fat People: William Hill is opening a large reducing salon in this vicinity. . . Carol Stockard has just been promoted to the head laboratory technician at Duke Hospital. . . Floyd Allison, after ten years in the major leagues, has now been made manager of the Cleveland Indians. . . Mildred Ratliff is the private secre- tary of the president of the Rose's Dime Stores. '. . Flash from the football highlights: Jesse Andrews, that shifty back, has just finished the season with the Chicago Bears, high scorer of the professional football leagues. . . Emma Jean Bason, the famous artist, is opening an art school in this vicinity. . . Martin Mortensen has just graduated from a high school teacher to a position as history professor at Elon College. . . Ann Robertson is a missionary in China now. . . Rachel Bulla is in New York drawing designs for dresses for one of the largest dress companies in the country. . . Ernest Allison has just been promoted to the position of manager of the Graham and Alco Theatres. . . Ellen Sykes, the great pianist, is making a tour through the countries of Europe and Asia giving concerts in the larger cities. . . Moon's Fashion Shop has a new manager, Sarah Wheeley. . . Clucky News! Eddie Smith has just added another 160 acres to his large chicken farm out in the southwest. . . Mary Virginia Buhler is quite a big-wheel in the church she attends. She is the choir director and the president of the Women's Auxiliary. . . Attention Housewives: There is no such thing as meatless Tuesdays any more, so all of you drop around to Fuller's Meat Market for all of your meats and for the lowest prices in town. . . Clara Brewer is the wife of a millionaire businessman. . . Attention Mothers! Frankie Jane Wilson is president of the Ajax Baby- Sitting Agency. . . Flash from the basketball highlights: Jimmy Fogleman has been made manager of the Washington Capitols of the Professional Basketball League. . . Harry Wilson is now the owner and manager of the new and modern Ford Motor Company of this town. . . Pete Rich is now the head engineer of the aeronautical engineer division of the Pan- American Airlines. . . Ruby Webster may be quiet, but it seems to me that she is doing pretty well. She has married the millionaire for whom she was the secretary. . . Jimmy Pickard, the great lawyer, has opened his ofhce in Graham, and I hear that he is the one to see if you are in trouble. . . Tom Welch is now the first shift boss of Travora Manufacturing Co. . . Jack Moser, the millionaire businessman, seems to be doing well with his cigarette factories. . . john Owens is now the sole owner of the Owens' Wholesale Company, which was formerly The Bradshaw Wholesale Co. . . Jane Thompson is jerking sodas, but instead of being an employee she is the employer of her own soda shop. . . Nova Boswell and jean White are very efficient secretaries. They have recently been promoted and are now secretaries for the president of the National Bank of Alamance. . . And now that I have told you what I see in the future I wish to tell you that I do not guarantee my predictions to be absolutely right, but I feel sure that each and every one of the Seniors of '49 will make a success in whatever they may do, reaching their goal at the end of the unknown trail. The game featured the mighty offense of Graham-319 points in regular season play-against a brilliant defensive Jamestown team that allowed only twelve points during the entire season. Graham, with nine first downs to two for Jamestown, led in every department of play. Jamestown scored first on a 37-yard run and a fumbled lateral. Tom Foust, brilliant senior tackle of Graham, blocked what was eventually the winning point. After having a sensational fifty-yard punt return for a touchdown by Co-Captain Jesse Andrews called back, the black-and-red-clad Graham warriors scored on a flat pass from Bobby Moser to Co-Captain Floyd Allison following a recovered fumble by Harry Cornell. With the stands in an uproar, quarterback Floyd Allison com- pletely fooled the Jamestown defense by calling for a false kick and pass for the extra point. Bobby Moser pitched to Jack Cathey standing alone in the end zone for the winning point. This victory gave the Red Devils a record of eleven wins without a defeat for the season. Seven Graham seniors started this Hosiery Bowl game-Co-Captains Jesse Andrews and Floyd Allison, tackles Tom Foust and W. Sharpe, end Jack Moser, wingback Jack Cathey, and fullback Bobby Joe Moser. Pete Rich, Eddie Smith, Jimmy Pickard, and Ernest Allison were other seniors playing a vital part in the Graham march to victory. if 48 B' 9f49?9 GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM ...m........-..- Miss RUTH HENDERSON, Coarb MRS.
