XII-.N Linens T0 me Emron The recent tragedy involv- ing the three sisters on Highway 87 South brings great sadness to everyone who was fortunate enough to have known them. I was very fortunate to have been taught by Audrey Moon in the fifth grade at Haw River Elementary School. Mrs. Moon was so much more than a schoolteacher to her students. She was one of the students, she was a friend to all and made everyone feel good about themselves. She always looked for the positive in any situation and made things seem better even if they weren't. One of my fond- est memories of Mrs. Moon is the way she would play with her students on the play- ground, She would play kick- ball, softball, swing or play tag. Whatever we were play- ing she was right there with us. Every student was a win- ner with Mrs. Moon. Through the years l have Sadness of Wreck that claimed SISICIS tempered by memories church, community and neighbors. Mrs. Moon always seemed glad to see me and always had a joke or two to share. Joke telling was one of her many joys in life, along with her flowers and wildlife in the yard. She shared so much with me from the les- sons ofthe fifth grade to the iris plants she gave me this spring. I never got to know Mrs. Mogle or Mrs. Fuquay in the same way I know Mrs. Moon, but I feel I knew them from hearing Mrs. Moon talk about them so often. The sisters' love for each other showed in all ofthem. I truly feel my life is much enriched for being fortunate enough to have had Audrey Moon teach me in the fifth grade and continue a rela- tionship that I will always treasure and hold close to my heart. I loved Mrs. Moon very much and am proud to have been one of her students. maintained a close relation- JANE ANDREWS ship with Mrs. Moon through Fl-'Ill' -, . -.11 Arn .,....... .. . . , 'f l'f Il li. lf. They are seen on their way to get that famous ublue slipf, The first few minutes are spent in a whirl of confusion mid conversations, laughter, and that daily question, 'VVhere are my books? This is for a short time only, be- cause soon they are off, loaded with books, to their morn- ing classes. 1 Z 1 2. rush like mad for the homerooms, but a few unlucky ones 9 5 4 a 6 5' 4 Ouvrez les livres, s,il vous plaitf, is heard coming from the French class, while next door the English students are tussling with a theme. Science pupils experiment with grasshoppers, as the typing class makes rhythm by pecking on the keys. Tempting aromas from the Home Economics room fill the study hall, antagonizing the poor students who are cramming for a test. The band is practicing in the audi- torium. A receptionist answers the telephone in the oflice. There has been a call meeting of the National Honor Society, and the Student Council is having its session. Everyone is busy. Recess, and the fellows and gals rest their tired minds by congre- gating in the hall and rooms or hurrying to meet that certain some- one whom they haven't seen for two whole periods. 'gVVhatcha got to eat?v is asked everywhere, and out come the apples, cakes, and what have you. Once again classes are resumed. The American Revolution is fought again, the geometry students struggle through a problem. But studying is hard, because their stomachs tell them that lunch is not far away. Cafeteria workers leave, and those in the study halls find it hard to keep still. Lunch time, at last, and the two study halls and the Diversified Occupations class race to see who can be first in line. A few minutes later the lunch room is crowded with hungry pupils. VVhat expres- sions are seen on the faces of the students as they eye their platesl Each day they vary. Everyone eats hurriedly so that he may have more time to talk or to primp-according to the sex. Then they wander back to their rooms to study, but oh how good it would be just to sleep! Each day the Bible class is entertained by the Clee Club, which has its class just below the Bible Class. D. O. students leave at this time to go to their work. Julius Caesar lives again in the doors or study rules of good health. Boys, and girls, sports are carried on after school and at night. Finally, the classes are dismissed. The boys and girls grab their belongings and depart. Another grand day is 4 ended at dear old Craham High. 7 Q 5 .H 1-Y, -wi G V- Latin classes. On that early, warm, Autumn day way back yonder in 1936, as we eagerly pushed our sunny little faces into the doorway of grade one, our eyes shone with great anticipation over this exciting new adventure. We looked about us and saw many small, strange faces which were destined to play important roles in our lives and share twelve happy years with us. Almost too fast, we passed into the second year. The highlight of that year was, without doubt, our trip to the fire station. Our tiny hearts almost burst with excitement on that memorable day. We climbed on the fire engine and listened with big eyes to the stories of the fire chief. The third and fourth years fled as we discovered ourselves packed with more and more precious knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic. In our fifth year the State Fair was held at Raleigh, therefore, we found ourselves milling through the crowds, eating cotton candy and riding the hobby horses. On the same day, we visited the capital and shook hands with Governor Hoey. This incident made us feel very important indeed. Grades six and seven passed slowly. At the end of the seventh year, we were shocked to find out we would have to spend an extra year in the grades, however, our eighth year passed quickly. Finally that glorious day arrived when we received our elementary diplomas. We were in high school at last! Then came that horrible year we spent as green, green freshmen. We felt so lost and little among all those big people. It was terrifying!! Breathing a sigh of relief, our class found itself as sophomores. We felt more important now and at least we could pick on the new freshmen! Many of our classmates were now active in sports and in the Glee Club. The girls were busy learning to be good home makers. The air was constantly filled with delicious aromas escaping from the Home Economics Department. In our Junior year we were busy attending to many happy events. The fall was spent going to football games, the winter cheering our basketball teams, and we even turned out to watch some fine baseball in the spring. With the great problem of the junior-Senior Banquet staring us in the face, we set to work. Our hard work was justified for we have never seen a more beautiful banquet. We hardly recognized each other in our striking evening clothes. Many of us wore formals for the first time. How grown up we felt on that wonderful night! Finally after eleven long years of waiting, we became the Senior class of 'c48.v This day had been only a dream for so long we could hardly believe it was true. None of us will ever forget the day we received our shiny new class rings or ,the day we decided to have the first annual Graham High ever published. We were swamped with work-algebra, physics, French, and English. All of us had our noses stuck in college catalogs, trying to decide on a career and a college to enter after our days at G. H. S. were finished. Now in the midst of planning our VVashington trip and our commencement, we stop to realize that we will soon be going out the same swinging doors we entered so long ago. In these years we have learned not only facts from books. but sportsmanship and the value of friends. These years have been happy years, filled with the joy of youth and also the pains of growing up. VVe wont forget old Graham High and the happy years we spent within its sheltering walls. Since that first day in the first grade, the time has passed quickly. The years ahead may be trying ones. We are aware of our great job in the future. We can only hope with all our hearts that the rest of our years will bring the happiness and joy of our last twelve within old G. H. S.
