QpVufr ofy THE STEER Volume 47 Graham High School Graham, Texas Student Life...........3 Administration........44 Classes...............54 Table of Contents Honors.......................112 Sports...............130 Clubs................170 Conclusion...........204 When school began in late August, students grouped themselves around the doors of GHS. Within these buildings new experiences would set this year — the year of 1976 — apart from all other years. 5 With late summer workshops, extra practice sessions, and teachers’ meetings, school began. Adding to the confusion of registration was the changing of semester credits to quarter credits, for GHS had changed to the quarter system to comply with the state law. This would mean exams in November, February, and May. 7 The product of 200 years of national growth, the Class of '76 had goals of our own to achieve and sorrows to share. October brought sorrow when a classmate died, the result of a massive coronary attack. May brought graduation and a new beginning. By sharing these experiences, we grew as individuals and as a class. After a summer of being individuals, GHS had to organize into groups. This means dividing into classes, into teams, and into clubs. We didn’t know that this would mean local honors, district offices, and district championships. 11 J. Before a stadium-packed crowd, a new Homecoming Queen, Cindy Ingram, began her reign. The pre-game activities paid off when the Mighty Steers treated the Ex’s to a 21-0 victory over Iowa Park. 12 13 There was knowledge to be gained. We prepared to study hard. Research papers had to be written. There were frogs to dissect. We studied together, ate together, played together, complained together, and even won together. 15 In October to add to the excitement of homecoming weekend, Debbie Lane was named All-American girl in the Thespian sponsored contest. Kathy Lindsay and Lynn Pyles were second and third place winners. Robin Foley received the talent award. Our spirit was contagious. The Steers were “itching” for a district title. Eight charters and a long caravan of cars carried fans to Brownwood where the Steers captured the district trophy with a 31-29 victory. Within 24 hours GHS took another district championship. The volleyball team gained their fifth district title after defeating another Brownwood team. 19 The winter quarter began quickly after exams, which were crammed between the Brownwood game and bi-district play-offs. The volleyball team stopped off at Sweetwater for the football game with Lubbock Estacado on the way to their own play-offs in Lubbock. With defeat came disappointment, but our spirit was soon revived as we looked forward to a great basketball season. 20 When the cagers in the red striped warm-ups bounded onto the court, the field house rang with cheers. The Steers, backed by fans, coaches, and teammates, challenged the Vernon Lions from the tip-off to the final buzzer. Graham won 65-55. 22 23 Christmas was a busy time at GHS with special programs, parties, and door decorations. In addition the Y-Teens cheered the residents at the rest homes by singing carols. Student Council sent Santa and his helpers to the elementary schools and canned cash at the bank. The National Honor Society toured the Neiman Marcus store in Dallas. 25 As spring approached, the excitement of the curtain going up drew the students to the Memorial Auditorium. Rehearsals for FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON and “American Music in Review” kept seniors and band members busy through the month of February. 26 •T The fourth annual Student Council Sing-Song brought the past alive as 200 years of American history unfolded on the stage of the Memorial Auditorium. But it was a peek into the “Space Age” that gave the Thespians first place honors. The Y-Teens placed second with “Women’s Suffrage,” and VICA-DECA’s “Westward Ho!” and Pep Club’s “Roaring Twenties” tied for third place honors. y 29 Windblown, cold, and wet, GHS, aided by the Lions Club, hosted nineteen schools for the 29th Possum Kingdom Relays. The weather was forgotten in the excitement of the Relays, as the fans cheered and the timers clocked each race. Taking top honors from Graham were Kelly Williams as he pole vaulted 12'2 , and Lenwood Bates as he won the 440-yard dash in 52.3 seconds. 30 31 Spring arrived suddenly, and it was time to attend state conventions. The Future Teachers were the first to go, then all the other clubs left in a rush. The juniors presented their first class play, the comedy IF A MAN ANSWERS. Gay Byers and Greg Fitzgerald were great in the leading roles. 32 33 The Future Farmers were kept busy during March and April with a stock show and a rodeo. Members spent many hours grooming their animals for the organization, and club members’ efforts were rewarded with a very successful rodeo. 35 During April the juniors treated the seniors to a visit to “The Land of OZ.” With the theme of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, the Graham Country Club took the appearance of a fantasy for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Sophomore servers were dressed in “Oz” costumes. The Juniors surprised the seniors with a discotheque featuring disc jockey “Bumpin’ Butch.” 36 ► i w f- i- 37 With the school year coming to a close, clubs began having banquets. Y-Teens hosted their mothers, the Future Homemakers treated their fathers, and the VICA-DECA students honored their employers with banquets. The Quarterback Club saluted the student athletes with a dinner to recognize their achievements. 38 39 May arrived at last, and the Y-Teens made their annual trip to Glen Rose. The sunrise service brought an end and a beginning as the retiring officers announced the new cabinet. In other clubs, elections were held, votes tallied, and the new officers posed for their pictures as they began looking forward to a new year. 40 41 The awards program was held the morning of graduation day. Students were given awards for their academic achievements, for their citizenship, and for their talents. Mr. O’Day Williams announced the winners as Mrs. Pauline Jones presented the medals and certificates. 43 a. The school board members make plans for ihe school year.
