Table Of Contents Student Life Summer Winter Student Life When spring began to blossom at OHS, the busy days drew closer to an end. Track meets, banquets, final exams, and graduation were all a part of 6HS in the springtime. For seniors it was the end of an old way of life and the beginning of a brand new world. For others it was still one more year in GHS ... or maybe two or three, but each one will have that last. . . Spring Student Council And Thespians Starred In Spring Variety Show The Student Council and Thespians joined together for the spring production RAGE OF THE STAGE. Painted props and long rehearsals contributed to the success of the musical. GHQ Athletes Won In PK Relays The highlight of the track season was the PK Relays sponsored by the local Lions Club. Hundreds of boys from different parts of Texas and the local girls competed for top honors. The Student Council worked in the concession stand, and the cheerleaders and other girls were kept busy distributing trophies. The many sunburned faces the day after testified to the Relays' popularity. Formals, Frills, And Flowers Following a tradition the Junior Class entertained the Senior Class with a banquet and dance at the Graham Country Club. The gala decorations and the good food made all the work in the basketball concession stands worthwhile. The ranking girl and boy officers from each class and the faculty members were special guests. Derace Schlittler and Sharon Kee. Barry Orr, the 1973 Junior Class President. n Banquets Brought Year To A Close Y-Teen Mother-Daughter Banquet. As the school year came to an end, each club had a banquet to recognize officers for the coming year or to honor someone special. Y-Teens had a banquet to show appreciation to their mothers. The Quarterback Club sponsored an All-Sports Banquet to recognize all GHS athletes. Other clubs recognized their officers and representatives. FHA Banquet. 12 FFA Banquet. Buses, crowded with Y- Teen girls and their baskets of food, made the trip on Friday afternoon and returned Saturday morning. Initiation of the freshmen, the awards program, the tearful, but happy sunrise service, and the final good-byes to the seniors, all played a big part in the Y-Teen overnight trip. We are climbing Jacob's ladder . . . 14 One last picture before the bus leaves. Y-Teens enjoy the early morning skits. Overnight Trip Y-Teen The Class of '75 said good-bye to the seniors. Awards Program It's All Over The end of one more year drew near and a sense of anticipation and excitement filled the air. Three carefree months will reward the students for long hours of studying for the final exams. Graduation with its tearful goodbyes, its tingling excitement, and its sense of pride faced the senior class. 17 Graduation day. And if was summer. Students who looked forward to three months of fun and play soon found their time filled with many activities. During the busy summer, GHS students attended summer school, worked at summer jobs, took trips and helped with community projects. It was a short, busy, but worthwhile. . . Summer Projects Filled Idle Hours Car wash for Cystic Fibrosis Fund. The students who devoted their time to summer projects will long remember the smile they brought to people’s faces. Whether they worshiped God in the local churches or contributed to community projects, GHS students will long be remembered for their deeds of service. 19 20 The band boarding the bus headed for Florida. The Big Blue Marching Band on the downtown streets of Florida. Band Journeyed To Florida Mr. Hemphill announced during the Christmas Concert that the band had been invited to Miami, Florida, for the Lions International Convention. In the months that followed there were many hours of hard work, which came to a climax when the members of the band boarded the buses for a fairytale” trip to Florida. During the trip the band experienced excitement, fear, friendship, laughter, tears and defeat. All of these things combined to make the summer of 73 a memory for the band which will never be forgotten. Some people worked, some went to summer school, some went on trips, and others enjoyed the summer by doing nothing at all. 23 The Class Of 1974 Summer was over and fall was in the air with its promise of studying, pep rallies, football games, club activities, and brisk weather. The challenge of a new year was unfolding. There were many books to be read and many pages to be written, but in spite of the work many exciting things took place in the. . . Though the days were still hot, summer vacation ended and that inevitable day of regisuation arrived. Mr. Williams explained the rules and regulations of GHS to both the new and the old students. When he finished, there was a mad rush for the gym. After what seemed to be hours of wandering from teacher to teacher, each student finally registered, and was ready to begin classes on Monday. 27 Y-Teens Cabinet members of Y-Teens. The traditional salad supper for cabinet members and the mountaintop service for old and new members marked the beginning of a new year for the Y-Teens. Both old and new members held high expectations for the approaching year. 29 Homecoming Week It's amazing the things some people found to burn. Everyone was busy decorating the halls for the homecoming visi- tors. The hours spent gathering wood were finally worthwhile. Neal had a lot of help painting his car. 30 Strange creatures invaded the Greg, Darrell, and Glenn are true Steer supporters, pep rally. Mr. Barringer's first period trig class was proud of their prize-winning door. Bonfire Wood And Wef Mums After much talk and careful planning, the busy week of homecoming finally arrived. Everyone seemed to enter the exciting activities. Though the bonfire was set afire early, students rallied together to gather an even bigger stack of wood for the Thursday night blaze. All day Friday was filled with much fun and excitement. The rain which began at game time, foretold how the game would end. The half time activities were called off except for the crowning of Pam Harvey as the Homecoming Queen. Visions of wet mums, dripping hair, disappointed fans huddled under umbrellas, muddy uniforms remain as memories of the 1973 Homecoming. 31 Homecoming Week Ole Blue has dampened spirits. Let's Meet After School Whether it’s pep squad or football practice, many GHS students and teachers are involved in meetings after school. These plans involve practices and work sessions. Thursday is always a busy afternoon in the fall for everyone is getting ready for the big game on Friday. Annual staff getting organized. 34 Regular Thursday meeting for pep squad. Decorating halls. After School Meetings Taking a short break from daily routine. Friday morning practice for the band. Eager hands reach for the ball. We're Fired Up To Win The many hours of practice are finally put into use as the football season begins. The excitement created at the first pep rally-reaches a climax with the first kickoff of the year. The Steers charge onto the field with a burst of new energy. Eager hands reach not only for the ball but for a vic- torious season. The spirit of the student body and parents seems to grow stronger as the season progresses. Each player does his part to make a win- ning team. The Steers break through the hoop to begin the new season. Terry fights hard to gain yardage for the Steers in the Weatherford game. 36 Football Neal Logan makes a flying” play for the Steers. Kevin steps back for a long pass. A one point victory over Mineral Wells brings many smiles. 37 What could this be? A spirit of the dead??? Walking around the cookie walk. Dunking for apples. Spooks And Goblins Visit GHS October 31. 1973, brought a rainy night along with lots of Halloween thrills for Y-Teen girls. A tour through the haunted house, cups of hot stew, and many more activities added to the spirit of Halloween. 38 Waiting for a cup of hot stew. Cheerleaders and winner, Chad Williams. Bryan Waggoner receiving tag from Rhonda Clark. Chad Williams Named Mr. Irresistible The GHS cheerleaders sponsored a new and different money-raising project for high school students this year. Each girl bought Mr. Irresistible tags during the first period class. The object was not to talk to any boys while wearing the tag. When a girl did talk to a boy, she had to give him her tag. At the end of the day, the boy who charmed the girls for the most tags won the title Mr. Irresistible. Chad Williams, followed by runner-up Norman Stovall, was announced as the most irresistible boy in GHS. 39 Let's Boogie! The Canteen is a popular, weekend recreation center opened to high school stu- dents . The dances held at intervals throughout the school year attract a large number of the high school clan. These dances are even more fun because of hours spent by can- teen members creating beau- tiful decorations. Dances are not the only thing the Canteen has to offer. The pool tables and the ping-pong tables are usually kept in business by fre- quenters of the club. The Canteen offers chaperoned fun for everyone. LoDella provides entertainment at the canteen. Park Ribble and Timmy May play ping-pong. Everybody one - two . . . 40 Canteen Bobby Tate aims for the perfect shot. Who could Scott be watching? The pool table attracts much attention. Confetti throwing and spirited chants create the magic of excitement. All through the week each class works painting signs, or planning something special for the boys. The spark plug is given for the most work and the spirit stick is given to the class with the most spirit. The skits, band numbers, and class yells build the spirit for the game of the night. Football players and mothers 43 Library Club. Future Nurses Club. Thespian Club. Student Council Sponsors Sing Song Nine Clubs participated in a sing song sponsored by the Student Council. Mark looks on as his team- mates play. Football Bobby watches with concern. Another injured Steer is taken from the field. Steers score another touch- down. As the season progresses the Steers are plagued with many injuries. Casts and crutches become a familiar sight in the halls. Even though the team grows smaller, the fighting Steers never give up. No game would be complete without the enthusiastic cheers of the pep squad and Cheer- leaders, or the lively music of the Big Blue Band. Teamwork and time went into decorating the gym, planning pep rallies, and synchronizing the chants. Many times the cheerleaders had special treats for the boys. They baked cakes, decorated lockers, and awarded stars for outstanding plays on the field. All the drama and tension of pre-game pep rallies created high hopes for a victorious night. 49 50 Freshman beauties pose for picture. Jim Odom??? Tonya takes a little snooze. Although so many thought it would never end, they found time flew by during. . . Winter Workouts Free Throws, And Victories Junior concession workers during home games. With the cold windy nights came the season of basketball. Sharp and speedy teamwork brought the determined Steers many victo- ries. For many eager juniors, the season meant popping popcorn, fill- ing cups, and making sandwiches. Loyal parent and student supporters travelled to both in-town and out- of-town games to cheer the Steers to victory. Time-outs for the Steers to make plans. Steers and their opponents both battle for the two points. 53 Basketball Action Another victory! Time-out for a quick breath. Coming out of the dressing room after a hard game. The first game jitters seem to wear off for most players after a few times on die court. The seniors always seem to put a special effort for their last year on the court. Quick thinking and fast ball handling determines a real basketball player. The boys are constantly surrounded in a maze of action from the beginning of the season to the very last game. Two for Tate. 55 Mis. Pitcock's homeroom. Coach Haterius' homeroom. Mr. Barringer's homeroom. ‘Tis The Season To Be Jolly Sounds of music herald the arrival of the Christmas season at GHS. The band works many hours to present their annual Christmas concert. Favorite carols are sung by the Y-Teens to the people of the convales- cent homes. The Thespians do their share of presenting pro- grams during the Christmas season. The door-decorating contest sponsored by the Student Council inspires the creative and artistic members of each homeroom to show their tal- ent. This year's honors were taken by Mrs. Pitcock's, Mr. Barring- er’s , and Coach Haterius' home- rooms . 57 Christmas Is In The Air Among the many contests of the season is the Who Would You Like To Find Under Your Christmas Tree? contest. This year the STAMPEDE Staff found that GHS students would most like to find Lana Webb and Tommy Copeland under their tree. Each year the Student Council plays Santa for students of the spe- cial education classes. To help with the festivities, each Student Coun- cil member dresses up as a fairytale character. The Future Homemakers take the Christmas season as a time to honor their mothers with a special Christ- mas party. Good food and laughs are shared by faculty members, daughters, and their mothers. Students of the an department are very busy during the Christmas sea- son learning to make beautiful dec- orations for family and friends. Ho! Ho! Ho! Lana Webb and Tommy Copeland. Mr. Cody, the speech and drama teacher, adapted the senior presentation from the play, OUR TOWN. He changed the setting to the mid 1950's, and cre- ated a teenage narrator in the form of Neal Logan. The play centered around two typical families of the period and their teenaged children. Besides its being fun and a different dramatic presentation, I REMEMBER IT ALL had a timeless message about growing up. A typical breakfast at the Baylor home. The Pointer Sisters performing at the school talent show. Teenagers jitterbug to the strains of Elvis Presley. A car hop on skates? 60 Was it as hard as you thought it would be? Smiles? It must be an easy test! One of these answers just has to be right!! Pass Or Fail? Exam time undoubtedly is the period of the year that is dreaded the most. Students carry home loads of books and spend many late hours studying in an effort to pass their exams. The worried looks before the tests are fol- lowed by looks of great concen- tration during the exam. After it is all over, there is definitely a look of relief on everyone's face. Maybe it is just a bad dream. 61 Marcelia Arnold, Rhonda Holman, Virginia Oudems. 62 Marcelia Arnold Practice Makes Perfect As the weather begins to warm up, the girls' track team can be seen getting in shape for the approaching meets. Mark Denny returns the ball. JoAnna Williams serves the ball. Phillip Kamer swings into action. High Winds And Low Balls The brisk afternoons of winter didn't keep many of the golfers off the greens or many of the tennis players off the courts. After many drills on serves and swings, both the golf and tennis teams participate in several tourna- ments with other schools during the spring. 64 Volleyball can get rough. The strenuous afternoon workouts of the volleyball team have reaped rewards. This year’s team has been vic- torious in each of their local games. High hopes are held as the district tournament nears. The skillful game techniques of the 1974 volleyball team have led them to a successful year. Serves are practiced over and over again. 65 Y-Teens present 1974 Valentine Court.
