THE STEER Graham High School Graham, Texas The last word has been written ... the last picture taken for the 1973 Steer. We have tried to express on these pages the memories, desires, and feelings that have been a part of this year at Graham High School. The pictures in this book reflect the joys and disap- pointments, the laughter and the tears, the successes and the failures that can not be expressed by words. When the memories of this school year begin to fade, we, the editors, hope that this volume of the Steer will bring the memories back into focus. May this book help you to remember a year lived only once and then treasured forever. G r cu CULcl s 4 INFORMAL 5 Graham High School GH8 Campus m rrrr • • • Administration Building Band Building The buildings on the GHS campus are familiar sights to every resident of Graham, but to the GHS student the campus is more than just buildings. It is the activity which goes on in these buildings. The memories of long hours of practice in the field house, of the steady ham- mering in the ag building, of the experiment that flopped in the science annex, of the book which was always checked out of the library shape the image of the buildings in our minds. The long rows of lockers, the crowded halls, the ringing of bells, the dusty chalkboards, and the shedding calendar slowly marking each six weeks are the things we.see ... the things we will remember. Ag Building 7 Before School Shutting off the alarm Getting off the bus GHS students make many de- cisions before school that will determine the outcome of the day. The first and maybe the most important choice is whether to get up or stay in bed. To start the day with a smile or a frown; to finish or not to finish the homework before first period ... these are the questions. What are the answers? to Waiting for the bell to ring Studying for a test Getting an excuse Unloading the car The few minutes before school is a very busy time of day, especially for those stu- dents who have to cram for a first period test! The cheer- leaders are especially busy on Friday trying to get everything ready for the big pep rally. Then there are those who have to stand in line for an absence excuse. Woe be unto those who have the yellow excuse! 11 First Period 12 Girl's Track Band First period also finds the band practicing for a special program. Inside the building in room 213, Coach Keyes works hard to keep the students' minds in the classroom, not out- side. In Mrs. Burnett's class students have to be alert to find the keys because hunting and pecking is forbidden. With the 9:45 bell everyone jumps up and the race is on for the second period class. Algebra I 13 Vocational Agriculture Second Period Second period finds GHS students hard at work. The boys in the agriculture build- ing are as busy as Santa's elves, fixing bells for Christmas. One of Mrs. McCracken's artists dabs that extra bit of paint on her masterpiece. Art II Junior Business Interior Design Speech 1 The junior business students visit the bank to buy stock so Mrs. Burnett can teach them the wheeling and dealing of the stock market. Some genius in Speech I expounds his views to his fellow genius. The cre- ative students in interior design make decorative accessories for their home. 15 Third Period Speech II Shorthand As third period rolls around the King Family is caught by the camera in Speech II doing their warmups. Who knows they might even make the Johnny Carson Show someday! While the speech stu- dents are busy making faces for Mr. Cody, shorthand students are making faces at the long hours of work ahead. As the three hour auto mechanics class comes to an end, a shaky voice can be heard saying, ... uhhhh, Mr. Allcorn, what happens if you have a couple of parts left? Auto Mechanics 16 STUDY HALL After two periods of boys' health, Coach Edwards looks forward to the peace and quiet of his third period study hall. While Coach Edwards and scholars are relaxing in study hall, the shop boys are hard at work. At first glance it looks as though they are having a good old-fashioned bam raising. Look again. They are building storage barns for people in the community. Above the hammer and nails, Coach Haterius can be heard saying, ... and now you will write a five page report telling why the trash can blow up. SHOP II CHEMISTRY 17 Lunch What’s the big hurry? Is it a fire? No, the bell has just rung, and it's time for lunch. While some people rush for the lunchroom, others rush outside to thumb a ride to the Dairy Queen. No matter how hard they try, some poor fish is always left behind. Don't worry. Maybe next year you'll have a car. Catching a ride for lunch. The rush for lunch. The cafeteria line. 18 The nibbler. Lunch at the Dairy Queen. Maybe Kerry can't believe he ate the whole thing, but the rest of us can. While Kerry is finishing off his plate of cookies, others eat a hamburger, french fries, and a coke at the K N or the Dairy Queen. Lunch at the K N. Fourth-Fifth Periods Nothing is more confusing to a new student than our fourth and fifth periods. Part of the student body eats lunch while the other half attends classes. The problem is - which half are you in? Fourth period finds the art students drawing a portrait, mak- ing paper tole, creating a picture of string, or painting shingles. GHS students, famous for being brilliant scientists, study the elastic limits of springs in physics and learn (and never forget) the parts of a frog in biology. Art I Physics Biology 20 Homemaking II Studyhall Bookkeeping For bachelors like Coach Keyes the best place to get a home- cooked meal is Homemaking II. With a good excuse like that, he may never get married. All studyhall classes meet upstairs but the fifth period studyhall which has the distinction of meeting in the library. Some students study while others spend their time looking for a good book to check out. Bookkeeping students learn the importance of balancing the check- book. It surely takes a lot of work if those numbers don't balance. 21 Sixth Period Mrs. Rogers sixth period American history class seems to be in deep thought over the day's news or could it be the comic strip? After all, nothing is more American than a good funny paper. Just down the hall Mr. Barringer's geometry class dis- covers the different parts of the cone. Some day these geniuses may be famous mathematicians. Shop students learn how to create usuable pieces of furni- ture in shop. Parents are aften surprised with bookshelves, stools, and chairs made by their son in shop. American History Shop 22 Consumer education Civics Health Sixth period, the after dinner hour, seems like the perfect time for a nap, but somehow the teachers don’t see it that way. Role playing keeps Mrs. Strickland's students alert in consumer education class. With someone like Ronnie Notman, Mr. Boedecker doesn’t have to worry about his civics class going to sleep. Why is Ronnie back in the corner, Mr. Boedecker? Mrs. Spring's health class doesn’t have time to sleep because she has them busy making collages about emotions. 23 Seventh Period Seventh period is usually the quietest period of the day. Even though Mrs. Arnold and Karon look forward to the end of the day, there is much work to be done in the office. Some students find that seven periods are just too many so they sign out and go to work. Other students are ready and willing to give up their study- hall to do work for a teacher. OFFICE WORKER STUDYHALL 24 Gt Volleyball practice. During football season everyone looks forward to the pep rallies on Fridays. Steer fans are always eager to show their support for the team. The football boys aren't the only ones who have to work out. The volleyball team can be found seventh period planning strategy for their next game. Not all students have to be in school to work. Kim has chosen to further her education by working at the Graham Medical Associates. On the job training. 25 Affer 9chool The final school bell rings at 3:45, but not all students get to go home then. On Thursday during football season the girls stay to put up pep squad signs. The concession stands also play a big part in after school activ- ities. Nearly every student sacks popcorn at least once during his high school days. Y-Teens perform their good deed after school by collecting for multiple sclerosis. Concession stands. Y-Teens. Putting spirit signs up after school. 26 Band musical. With nerves of steel, Mr. Lane faces his driver education class for a late afternoon cruise. Long hours of hard work and practice are spent on programs given in the Memorial Auditorium. Cheerleaders present yard mark- ers to Steer players. The hard hitting Steers scored 60 points in non-district play but failed to score a victory. After weeks of rigid prepara- tion. the Steers met their first opponets, the Mineral Wells Rams. The newly organized pep squad, eager to support their Steers, and many home town fans packed the Rams' stadium to see quarterback Kevin Abel display some of his fine aerial tactics, However, the Rams upset the Steers 48-32. The Herd heads for the football field. 44 Kick off time is here. Steers see action in Gainseville. Big Blue fans share Steers' disappointment. Allen pushes for another yard. The Steers hosted Brewer for the second game of the year. A capacity crowd rose to their feet to get a better look at the see- saw scoring battle between two fine teams. Touchdowns were scored on pass plays from Kevin Abel to Obbie Loving and on runs by Larry Coleman. The final score was 30-28. The Steers made their longest journey for the season to Gainse- ville for the third game of the year. A strong Gainseville eleven held the Steers scoreless for the four quarters of play. The final score was 35-0. 45 GH8 Honors Coaches Coach Anderson smells defeat. What does Ronnie See? Joe doctors Fred's knee. The Steers opened conference play with Burkbumett in Bulldog territory. An inspired Burk Team unfolded their plans for capturing the 4AAA crown as they outscored Graham 28-12. It was coaches' night for the Graham Steers. A special tribute was paid during the week to the men who spend long hours teaching the boys lessons in life such as pride, competition, cooperation and deter- mination. Coach Keyes gives Terry last minute instructions. 46 GH8 Entertains Exes The freshman team has a new look for the homecoming pep rally. Libby Hammond is crowned Homecoming Queen. Kevin sips his Gatorade while Coach Anderson reaches in his pocket for a magic trick. Excitement filled the air as the homecoming game neared. Thoughts of the big pep rally, door decorations, dates, and a Homecoming Queen filled everyone's mind. The fact that it was Friday 13th and that the Steers were up against the highly ranked Hirschi Huskies proved to be trouble for the Steers. A fine aerial performace by Abel and Loving put the three Graham touchdowns on the scoreboard, but the 281 yards gained in pass plays was not enough to put the Steers on top of the score. The Huskies won 48-18. 47 Steers Journey to Brownwood Jean and Debbie lead the freshmen class yell while Ole Blue dances a jig. L Stan Maples tries hard to get the ball. After a rousing pep rally in the fieldhouse, the Steers boarded the bus for Brownwood. It was a cold, misty evening and the Steers had many miles to travel before the contest. Nothing came easy during the match of athletes because the weather created its special problems. The Steers lone TD was scored when Obbie Loving caught a nine yard pass. Inspired by a hometown crowd, the Lions overpowered the Steers 42-7. 48 Neither mud nor Lions can stop Obbie. Mud Mars Steers' Victory Hopes Gina leads the junior class yell. The pep squad sways to Viva Max . On a rain soaked field the Steers showed a strong savage- like flame of enthusiasm as they threatened a 14-6 Iowa Park lead at halftime. But the Steers were overpowered in the third quarter, and the fourth quarter ended with the final score 41-6. Abel runs with the ball. Ronnie moves over to check on the ball. 49 Parents Honored During Weatherford Game ... so for this team we'll fight John Riggs tags Max Roberts’ parents before the game. The pep squad welcomes the Herd for the second half The third home game of the year was designated as Parents' Night. Squad members' mothers wore corsages and the fathers wore their sons numbers. Though Weatherford scored first, by half time the Steers led the Roos. In the second half while the ball slipped from hand to hand, Steer victory hopes slipped to defeat. The final score favored Weather- ford 30 to 28. 50 Vernon Ekes by 9teers Libby and Patti say, Yea Steers, red, blue. The Steers matched the Ver- non Lions touchdown for touch- down only to lose the close dis- trict tilt by extra point conversions. Graham scored touchdowns in the second, third, and fourth quar- ters. The Steers made a valiant effort to score in the last two minutes of play, but a fumble thwarted the Steer drive. The clock ran out with Vernon three points ahead. The final score was Vernon 21 - Graham 18. Graham Steers converge on Lion ball carrier Steve Bristow looks dejected as the Vernon Lions take the lead. 51 Big Blue Tramples Gtephenville Spirit was the theme of the closing week of football. Steer teammates and cheerleaders col- lected everything from twigs to entire trees to build a bonfire for the Thursday night pep rally. A team, composed largely of seniors playing their last gridiron contest for GHS, quickly took command of the situation and never let the Yellowjackets think for a minute that they would win the game. The final score was 24-12. It was a special time for the Big Blue Band as they awaited anxiously the crowning of their 1972 sweetheart, Kay Pirtle. The referee says it is another Steer touchdown.
