Steers Defeat O’DAY WILLIAMS All-District, 1st Team Right End KENNETH CUNNINGHAM All-District, 1st Team Left Half-back Tri-Captain Graham Steers, under Coaches Orr and Curry, won an impressive 34-6 victory over the Olney Cubs last Friday night in Olney. It took the Orr men a little over a quar- ter to figure out the Cub defense; then they went to work. Graham’s crushing ground at- tack went to work with rapid fire touchdowns in the second and third quarter before a capacity crowd of 3,500 fans, most of them being from Graham. The “old magician,” Quarter- back Don Williams, reached in his hat and picked out several magic tricks with powerful running by Backs Kenny Cunningham, Jim Knox, Alvin Holland, and Bobby Smith. Williams confused his op- ponents throughout most of the game with brilliant, trickly ball handling and his backfield mates piled up 383 yards rushing and 18 first downs. End O’Day Williams had a good night on the receiving end of all the passes, including a 36-yard scoring heave. Walch broke thr- ough the middle of Graham’s de- fense for Olney’s only score. Scoring plays were as follows: first, 71 yard drive, Cunningham, Knox and Holland alternating honors with Cunningham going over on a quick opener from the three yard line; second, 35-yard pass from Don Williams to End O’Day Williams for touchdown; Holland set up the deciding play with a beautiful 23-yard run; third Alvin Holland scored on a 35- yard run, fourth, Bobby Smith, who had subbed in for the injured Holland, scampered 25 yards. Ken- ny Cunningham and Jim Knox were having a hard time deciding who was going to run the F. B. position, and both were eager to carry the ball: fifth, Bobby Far- rar, who played an outstanding game on defense, broke through and blocked a punt, and the ball was picked up by “Shorty” Mc- Laren w'ho waltzed the remaining distance. This ended scoring ac- tivities for the Graham Steers. (Coach Bruce Wilson says: “Re- lax, Coach, everything’s O. K. now —we can keep the courthouse in Graham.) It was a bitter fought ball game and Olney never gave up un- til the final whistle. (Several Ol- ney fans did however, leaving the stands early in the fourth quarter.) Coach Curry’s line displayed sharp blocking with several noti- ceable blocks thrown dowm in the secondary. Standouts on the de- fense were Co-Captain Atwood, Fred Stone. Bobby Farrar, Fred Enright (w'ho had a tough time with Olney’s tackle), Jim Williams and Co-Captain George. A Cub Clubs Cunningham JIMMY KNOX All-District, 1st Team Right Half-back Steers Scalp Indians 51-0 Graham Steers chalked up an- other conference tilt Friday night in Steer Stadium by defeating the Nocona Indians 51-0. On the sec- ond play of the game Jim Knox took a hand-off from Shorty Mc- Laren and would-be tacklers with O’Day laying a key block on the last man and scampered 80 yards for a touchdown. However, the play was nullified and the ball was brought back with Graham receiving a 5 yard penalty for backfield in motion. For the next 18 minutes fans witnessed rough and tough defen- sive football with neither club be- ing able to advance the ball. Then the Steers got a break, taking over on the 25-yard line after Nocona fumbled a punt. Kenny Cunning- ham set up the tally with a 12-yard dash down to the 2-yard I line; then scored on a quick open-j er. The first half ended 6-0. Coach Orr must have told the' boys something during the inter- mission. The Red and Blue came back for 45 points the second half! Alvin Holland started the balL rolling with a 54-yard run that1 was beautiful to witness, down to the 4-yard line, and scored. Cun ningham made the extra point on a quick opened. Jim Knox inter- cepted Sryon's pass and returned 1 to the 33-yard line. Kenny Cun- ningham slipped for 10 yards, and Holland bulled for 10 yards, then for 6 more. Graham was penalized; then on the fourth down, Shorty McLaren faked the ball as run play and dropped back and threaded the needle to O’Day Williams for 17 yards and a touchdown. O’Day kicked the extra point and the third quarter closed 20-0 in favor of the Steers. Cunningham scored on a quick opener for the fourth quarter. Co-Captain Atwood set up the next score with a pass interception on the 20-yard line. McLaren found Powell open in the end zone for six more points, and O’Day Wil- liams kicked the extra point. Russell Carey followed in his leader’s footsteps and intercepted I Bryon’s pass and returned to tin i 35-yard line. On the next play, Jim Knox tiptoed down the sideline for , 30 yards and scored for another 1 TD O’Day Williams took the next! punt and returned for 50 yards down to the 15-yard line. McLaren found O’Day open in the end zone,. FRED ENRIGHT All-District, 1st Team Right Gurad DON WILLIAMS All-District, 1st Team Quarterback but there wasn’t a handle on it; so McLaren hit Jim Knox for 26 yards down to the 4-yard line. Alvin Holland did honors to make the score 45-0. A bad pass back from center on the fourth down set up Graham’s last marker. Taking over from the 8-yard line, Shorty McLaren scored on the last play of the game. Final score— 51-0. The Steers played minus the services of their key backfielder. Don Ray Williams who was ill with the flu. “Shorty” McLaren took the quarterback duties and proved to be a capable ball handler, doing excellent faking and hitting the target for 5 out of 7 passes for 124 yards. Alvin Holland played one of his better games of the year, supported by the twins of dyna- mite, Jim Knox and Kenny Cun- ningham, racked up 17 first downs. Tommy Lisle handled all punting duties getting off several nice spirals. Fred Stone looked like the “old Stone getting tackles all over the field. Freddie Enright and Co-Capt. George also made their share of the tackles and Jerry Keenum handled kickoff duties. BOBBY FARRAR Guard Steers Outrun Bowie 45-0 Graham football fans closed their doors around 5:30 p.m. last Friday and journeyed over to Bowie to see their favorite team, the Steers, go into action. The trip was well repaid with a convincing 45-0 win over the Jackrabbits. Football in all its glory was pres- ent, good defensive play, good downfield blocking, pass intercep- tions, punt returns, long runs, and what have you. It would be diffi- cult to pick out any one outstand- ing offensive or defensive player. It was like a machine, each doing their outlined assignment which moulded together a powerful unit. ; Congratulations are in order to Coaches Orr, Curry, and Wilson for the work that has been done, and above all, these young men are gentlemen off the field, which tends to make our community a better place to live. If the Steers continue on with such improvements, teams of AA circles will be certain that Graham will be one of the powers to be reckoned with before the state laurels are passed out. The largest crowd assembled at Bowie Stadium in three years watched the Graham speed and charging line wear out the Jack- rabbits. This victory gave the Steers sole claim of the 12-AA title with Decatur and Jacksboro yet to play. The flashy Graham backs, Don Ray Williams, Kenny Cunningham, Jim Knox and Alvin Holland did most of the damage with O’Day Williams from the right end posi- tion. Knox opened up scoring activi- ties with a two-yard plunge. Bill Atwood, Graham’s fine center, con- tinued on with his interception habit and rambled 37 yards for the second tally, Jim Knox made a beatuiful 64-yard run and O’Day Williams took a punt seconds later and went 83 yards with the best | blocking seen in this area for' some time. Jim Knox scored again on a four-yard'plunge after Kenny Cun- ningham had set the TD up with a 47-yard jaunt. A few plays later Cunningham took a screen pass from Don Williams and wriggled through a maze of Bowie tackles to the Bowie four. He scored two plays later. Just before the game ended, Don Williams intercepted a Griffin pass and scooted 80 yards for the last tally of the night. The Steers only racked up 8 first downs. However, they made a net total of 424 yards rushing and passing. The Red and Blue were penalized six times for 95 yards, and had a good night on pass in- terceptions, grabbing four from the Jackrabbits. Two of these in- terceptions went for TDs. It was a | short trip home and everyone en- joyed the game. Knox Carries Over for a TD FRED STONE All-District. 2nd Team Left Guard KENNETH GEORGE All-District, 1st Team Right Tackle Tri-Captain ALVIN HOLLAND A11-District Honorable Mention, Back Steers Fly By Eagles 71-7 By PAT CLIFFORD Graham Steers got in shape last Friday night by running the length of the field 11 times, scoring 11 touchdowns, and enjoying a new title, that of District Champs by the outcome. Coach Orr mixed up his lineup with several combina- tions trying to hold 4own the score but to no avail. The Decatur Eagles were completely outmanned and it was very evident that Coach Orr could have made the score much worse if he had seen fit. Jim Knox had a big night scor- ing five times. Kenny Cunning- ham added three more, and Alvin Holland, O’Day Williams, and Shorty McLaren were satisfied with one a piece. Williams kicked three of seven points after touch- downs. Two others were made by O’Day and Cunningham who ran across the goal line. By quarters Graham scoring looked like this: four in the first, two in the second, two in the third, and three in the fourth. Decatur’s only T.D. came on ado-or-die 75 yard pass on the last play of the first half. James Gantt hit George Washburn for the tally. Graham made 441 yards in the first half and ended up the game with a net of 682 yards, three of eight passes completed for- 51 yards. The Steers were penalized six times for 70 yards. Both teams made 10 first downs. Coach Curry’s line played a bang-up game with excellent blocking, both in the line and downfield. Coach Orr’s first string of 23 men were confident, deter- mined, and enjoyed one of their better nights. Guard Steers Cinch District Title With 47-0 Win Over Jscksboro Playing before a capacity home- coming crowd and visiting fans from Jacksboro, the Graham Steers officially stamped them- selves champions of District 12-AA with a 47-0 win over the Jacksboro Tigers. (This win entitled the Steers to advance in Bi-District competition with the Mineral Wells Mountaineers game to be played in Graham, Friday, 8 p.m.) Jimmy Knox scored four times and his twin runinng mate, Ken- ny Cunningham, followed suit with three tallies. Crisp downfield blocking was a sight to behold and a rugged defense stopped Jacks- boro. Donald Ray Williams receiv- ed a slight injury and turned over his quarterbacking duties to “Shorty McLaren who turned in a creditable game. Alvin (Hick) Holland continues on improving in the blocking department, and can go with that pigskin when his number is called. We made 14 first downs, net yardage of 603 yards, completed 4 of 12 passes. This game gave Graham its first District Title since 1932. The night was young and it was a beautiful night to behold—al- lhough slifhtly damp with a froz- en mist, falling; nobody noticed it, not even the Orrmen ‘cause they handled the ball as if it were a dry night and left no doubt in anybody’s mind that they were a better team than Munger and Company from Mineral Wells, to the tune of 32-0. This win advanced the Steers into regional play against the Stephenville Yellow Jackets here Friday, 7:30 p. m. Stephenville en- ters this contest with an impres- sive 26-6 win over Winters.
