ljbrary of the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA gift of High School League The GRAHAM 1964 We ' re loyal to you Graham High sing the students evermore. Published By GRAHAM HIGH SCHOOL Bluefield, Virginia Dear Students Music plays an important part in our school life. The shuffling of feet, the clanging of locker doors, Mr. Brown, and even the juke box in the cafeteria make music for our school. The clubs, the classes, the parties, and the sports all work in harmony to produce one masterpiece--GRAHAM. Foreword P-operty of : I Library of Virg ' Jimond, inija Contents Foreword Dedication Music Through the Year Faculty Activities Classes Ads 2 Dedication James Jones Beatrice Richardson We take great pleasure in dedicating the 1964 GRAHAM to two persons whose jobs are concerned with music in the true sense of the word- -Mrs. Beatrice Richardson, director of the choir, and Mr. James Jones, director of the band. The lives of many students are richer and finer from having been associated with these rpusicians. 3 Silently the empty halls await the thundering herd of students. No Students No Music The sun shines through the gym windows on a polished but de- serted floor. Forsaken temporarily by everyone, the salt and pepper shakers in the cafeteria wait to be used. The honor code hangs unnoticed in the eerie silence. ■ “Xi Xi ' XX- XXXXXX ’XiXXHiilii ' XXI-XX ' IX‘ X‘ ■ -i ■ ■ - ’MU ‘ - I il- Schedules and classes are all planned. All we need now is a few students. 4 The melancholy ticking of the clock falls on the deaf ears of an empty school. Start the Music 5 MISS G.H.S. DANCE One of the most enjoyable of the school activities, this dance is held in March. INITIATION Not all of the spring activities are dances. A very impressive ceremony is the in- itiation of members into the National Honor Society. UNDERCLASSMEN ONLY! Only eighth and ninth grades are permitted to attend this dance sponsored by the Teenettes and the ninth grade Y- Teens. Spring LITTLE PRISON Strange things become known when an elevator stops between floors. Zella Moore, Rachel Horton, Sue Tuell, Martha Stashien, Jennifer Gibson, and Lizzie Metcalfe had parts. ■MUiMfc 1 Hi FESTIVAL BOUND! Patterns was chosen as Graham ' s entry in the Play Festival at Charlottesville. Bill Bailey, Greg Earls, Kathy Metcalfe, and Judy Waggoner were accompanied by their director, Mrs. Virginia Garwood. WHICH WAY TO BOSTON This play gave Lane Austin, Ward Goodwin, Sandra Hughes, and Carole Blevins an opportunity to show their talent. BEHIND THE SCENES Never seen, never heard, but very important. SENIOEIS IN WASHINGTON A wonderful never to-be-forgotten trip for all those who went. Late Spring MAY DAY AT GRAHAM Barbara Cochran ruled as queen. Senior girls selected as attendants are Norma Boitnott and Gail Yost. Other girls represented clubs. UNDER THE BIG TOP Little clown invites you to see the big show. ENTERTAINERS Frances Angles and Wanda Carter are the only ones we recognize. The cats and clowns were a big hit. OUR CASTLE Juniors were proud of the castle, one of the features of the decorations. GRAND MARCH Betsy Kersey, Senior Class president, escorted by Eddie Danko. Connie Cofer, Junior Class president, escorted by Joe Sorrell. Mrs. Aileen Hughes, Mrs. Phyllis Bradley, Mrs. Sara Belcher. ON WITH THE DANCE The Blue Chords provided music for the Junior Senior Prom. The theme was STAIRWAY TO THE STARS. SCENE FROM THE JUNIOR CLASS PLAY Emma Wilson, Carolyn Jackson, Ruby Necessary, Nancy McKinney, Raymond Womack, and Susan Paris. CAROLERS dded a bright colorful note to the Farewell to ’63 The speech class presented a choral reading, GO YE TO BETHLEHEM, as a part of the Christmas program. The choir sang GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO and ECHO CAROL to set the mood for Christmas. Classroom In science students learn how every little note in nature contributes to the symphony. Here Mr. Porterfield con- ducts a class in physics. Typing One can almost hear the off beat tapping of Mrs. Belcher ' s typing class. A Igebra Programed algebra shows a quieter note. Geometry There ' s harmony in geometric figures. Mrs. Brown certainly seems to be in tune with her class. Music A field trip on a lovely autumn day ! Who wouldn ' t feel like singing? The class really gets a laugh from Larry Brooks ' im- personations. Biology Art Mrs. Webb helps these art students appreciate and reproduce beauty in color and form. English In literature Mrs. Hughes opens the eyes of her students to the rhythm of the poetry of the mas- ters. (Should we say ears ?) ! Classroom Music Geography Those far away places with strange sounding names become real in Mrs. Willis ' class. Home Economics With all the modern equipment the old fashioned broom still has its place these girls find. Home Economics Color, design, and fine workmanship go into the creation of lovely clothes, Mrs. Barnett tells her students. Between Classes Put a nickle in the jukebox! Principal of G.H.S. Clark M. They have created entire industries — ours, for example. Under America’s Free Enterprise system, inventive people like Edison can expect special compensations — profit, honor and satisfaction. The hope of attaining such rewards has been one of our nation’s greatest incentives to progress. It is a goal that prods imagi- native minds in their quests for new products and methods. Not everyone can be a Thomas Edison. However, every trained, dedicated graduate can anticipate a full measure of our society’s rewards.
