We hope you enjoy it. The Staff ■54 Past and Present To know which way we’re going, We must know from whence we came; And then decide the object, The goal we would attain. So pause a moment with us here, Before you go your way, Look back to what has gone before, Look toward another day. We’re proud of those who went before , And their measure of success, They challenge us to follow them, And we shall do our best. We, the Staff, consider it a great privilege to dedicate the 1952 GR7VHAM To Mrs. Louise Wetzel, our beloved sponsor. Her sincere devotion, amiable spirit, and loyal service to the school and students have been an inspiration. Without her support and guidance this publication would not have been possible. yMINISTRATION J. L. WALTHALL Superintendent of Tazewell Coxinty Schools P. E. One of these was on Emory Court; another on Hockman Pike. Two or more schools were located at various times on the site now occupied by Graham High School, erected in 1913 (so states the cornerstone of the building). Our school was much smaller then and yet it housed the grades and high school classes. Graham grew - slowly at first but more rapidly as years went by. A new gym was added, and several partitions taken out to pro- vide a library and house the home economics department. At this time, 1937 , the grades were moved to a new building. Then Graham became truly a high school, retaining only the seventh grade of the elementary school. More recently classes have been held in a frame structure known as Holbrook House, the basement, the former book- store, and the auditorium. Students will remember many things as they leave Graham, for somethings have become a tradition. Among these: The Hallow- ween Carnival, at which time a King and Queen are crowned; the interclass tournaments in basketball, held after the regular season is over; the club formals; the Junior -Senior banquet and prom; the trip to Washington for the Senior class; the school paper and annual; the class plays; and the athletic teams. It would be impossible to name all these associated with the growth of the school but mention must be made of: A. S. Greever, superintendent of Tazewell Schools for over thirty years; S.N. Huffard, a loyal Bluefielder who served on the School Board for twenty -nine years; Z.T. Kyle, the principal for a number of years and under whose leadership the school was remodeled. More re- cently we had T. M. Gillespie as principal and Hugh Cassell as supe rintendent. But time marches on and Paul Goodman, J. L. Walthall, and L.N. Dalton serve as board member, superintendent, and principal respectively. Bluefielders are looking forward to the erection of a new high school across the railroad from the present structure. A bridge will connect the new building with the present one (which will then house the junior high school and part of the, elementary grades). As a whole the school has had able leadership and every one feels fortunate to have as principal Lewis N. Dalton, who we feel sure, will guide Graham to better and higher things and help students stick to their slogan, Finish the Job. John Beard Betty Chafin Vice President Secretary THE PAST The fall of 1948 saw our dignified Seniors enter Graham High as lowly freshman. How inej erienced we were! Though lacking quality, we possessed quantity, numbering well over a hundred. We elected Bill Backus our president. The year passed and we learned our way around and became a part of the school family. The sophomore year we began to take part in sports and to be known a little better. Having no one better than Bill, we reelected him presi- dent. Then almost before we knew it we were jimiors. We chose Aunt Cathy ' s Cat as our play and had a wonderful time practicing for it. The big event was the banquet and prom we gave the Seniors. Bill had been such a good president for two years that we chose him a third and made plans to elect him for a fourth time. At last it came-our Senior year. Having added and subtracted senior members we were ninety -five in number, the largest class to graduate from Graham up to now. We are looking forward to our play, the trip to Wash- ington, the prom, and commencement. It has been fun, but we have begun to realize that life is not all fun and are thinking seriously of what we shall do when we leave Graham. Some of them have made names for themselves and in that way reflect glory on their alma mater; many of them have re- mained in the background, as far as publicity is conceived, and are just general, all-round good citizens. The parents of many of our Graham students are themselves graduates of Graham High. A few names have been selected at random and the fields into which they have gone; Willis Anderson, Carl Gillespie, and Garnett Shufflebarger are lawyers. Dr. Douglas Crockett, Dr. Cecil Chandler, and Dr. Forrest Shufflebarger chose the medical profession. Robert Homer Anderson and T.D. Yost are ministers. Bill Dudley is Graham ' s only all-American football player. Five of the teachers at Graham are former graduates of the school: Greta Warden Gillenwater, Ann Shufflebarger Haner, Josephine Perry Wingate, Nancy Omar Trenton, Carmen Carter. Vincent Sexton is Judge of The Circuit Court of this section of Virginia. Thelma Phlegar Owens has just published a book Daddy Was A Doctor. J. G. W. Gillespie is a dentist. This list could go on and on as our graduating classes increase in size from year to year. Many of our boys went into service and a number gave their lives on foreign battle fields. Many boys and girls are in The Armed Forces now. We salute you, former students and graduates. This year ninety-five more will join the ranks of Graham High graduates. May we all reflect honor on our school and serve our community and nation to the best of our ability. Huffard first pre- sented the medal in I 9 I 6 ; Glenna James (Mrs. Kennedy) received the medal that year. Mary Cameron (Mrs. Farharason) won the award in 1917 and Annie Laura Spraker (Mrs, George Miller) in I9I8. More recent recipients were Gloria Andes and Lois Neal, who tied, in 1950 and Phyllis Bell in 1951. As far as we can find out Mr. Stout was principal in the new school. (1913) Mr. Lincoln was principal in 1915. The first annual was called Shaum. We wonder why. Ann Shuffle barger Haner was the first majorette Graham ever had. Gordon Perkins and Betty Harris were the Negative team state winners in debate at Charlottesville in 1951. Listen carefully for other echoes of the past. If any of ours are wrong it ' s be- cause we are new at interpreting echoes. Since then the succeeding presidents, Bonnie Ayres and Sammy Hylton, have helped the student council create higher standards and a better feeling between students and faculty members, and have made the students feel that they have a hand in seeing that their school is tops in efficiency, co-operation, citizenship, and sportmanship. Mr. Spangler reorganized the band in 1947. Since then the band has received a bid twice to play at the Apple Blossom Festival and been awarded a superior rating. We consider our band me of the outstanding bands in this area. IJORETIEi; onciiped The Debonaire Club was organized in 1946 to fill the need felt for another social club at Graham. Miss Dorothy Carbough, a member of the faculty, and Miss Mary Murdock were the first sponsors. Frances Neel was the first president. Since 1950 the Debonaires have held a formal each fall. All students are in- vited to this formal and it has become a high light of the autumn season. For two years the club has been sponsored by Mrs. Carter Damron, who chap- erones the girls on camping trips and supervises their other activities.
