Neel Rich, the clown, was trying very hard to entertain Harold Walker, the owner and General Manager of the Circus. Harold did not want to entertained. Me wanted to talk about something serious. Very impatiently, Harold said, You can't guess what's going to happen! No, what is going to happen? The man from Sears Roebuck Company is coming to collect for those tents I bought about two months ago. Haven't you got any money? Yes, but guess who the collector is? I haven't the slightest idea. sone one else but Bobby Kirk, our old pal from Graham High School, Class of 1950. Well, well, I had just been wonde-ring what had happened to the restof the Class of 1950. That is an interesting subject to talk about. Do you know anything about any of them? Yes, it seems to me that I saw in the paper that Claude Brewer was the newly elected mayor of Bluefield, Virginia. He has as his secretary Lois Ann Neal. That's wonderful. I always knew that those two would end up together ,. Lois was always crazy about Claude. By the way, I heard that Frank Durham is a rich man now, A rich man? Yes, he has an oil well on his farm. But everyone said that he could not do anything without the help of Billy Ray Tickle. Why? Billy Ray has the brains and Frank has the money. Oh, yes, Billy and Margaret Ann Wallace were married last week. I thought Margaret was going to be a nurse, She was until Frank struck oil on his farm. Then Frank said he had to have the help of Billy Ray and Billy Ray said he just could not live without Margaret. ; Wonder what happened to Mary Jack Bailey. She and Margaret were always good friends. Oh, Mary Jack is the owner of Lewis Gale Hospital at Roanoke, Virginia. She has as her assistant Dorothy Leedy. Suddenly, there was knock at the door. The door opened. There stood Bobby Kirke Come in, come in, commanded Harold. Bobby replied, How's everyone? Just fine,” interrupted Neel. Won't you have a seat? Thank you. Harold said, Neel and I were discussing our classmates. Have you any-= thing to contribute? I'm afraid I haven't. You know how things are with an old married man. I don't get around much except to collect bills. I usually stay home with the Kids while Janice goes shopping. How many children do you have? inquired Neal. Only two, that's enough. They nearly drive me crazy. Now--er--Mr. Walker, about that's debt. The amount is $82.59. Yes, I know. Here is my personal check, said Harold. Thank you. I must be leaving. I am so rushed. It seems that people just won't pay their debts until they are forced to pay them. You must bring your family to see us sometime, invited Neel. Thank you, I willj replied Bobby. As soon as Bobby was out of sight Harold reached for his pocketbook. He said, Guess how much money I have left? I don't know, Exactly 92¢ and you can bet your life that the old girl will want to go out tonight. I suess she fust won't fo anywhere without money. We were discussing our classmates. Oh, yes. Have you seen the new improved dictionary? No, I didn't know anyone these days was smart enough to write a diction- ary.” Oh, yes_, Joe Bob Austin. Well, Joe Bob always did use big words. Have you heard about Bob Tabor and Katie Sarver. They are the world's greatest team. Katie sings and Bob plays the piano.” 'That' sounds pretty goode We really had some good talent in our class. Yes, Harold Robertson is now a preacher. Jim Lawson aids him in his work. Can you imagine Harold being a preacher? Did you know that Jack Cecil is Band Director at Graham now? Of course, he has as his assistant, Etta Havens. I hear that they are planning to get married soon. You remember how close Etta and Mary Ruth Whittington were in high school Yes, what did Mary Ruth do? Go to the jungles of Africa? That's exactly right. She decided to be a Missionery. I never thought she would go to Africa. She is coming back soon to de- liver some lectures. Say, did you know that Shorty Crabtree is public enemy No. I? What's that? He is such a lucky gambler that he takes everything he wants. This group found other associations of inhabitants who, after much hesitation, became friends. The inhabitants were class conscious and all of them were in one of four groups, Freshmen, Sophomere, Juniors or Seniors. Immediateley they were informed the Seniors were the overlords, guided by many assistants anda superior known by name as T. M. Gillespie. The new comers in this establishment soon acquired the name of Freshmen, and were better known by ruling tribes as Green Freshmen. This group was given the privelege of selecting to guide and lead them a chief who was called the president, and to hold this honor they choose Walter Keister. Recognition wms gmined by these Greenies when they proved to be stiff competitors to the Seniors in class tournaments, losing by a small margin in an overtime period. A new experience took place as their first year drew to a close. An unfamiliar test was distrubuted to the people to determine if they were to remain with their friends and to the surprise of their tutors they passed with rather brilliant colors. So ended their first strange year. They looked forward to fall and another get-to-gether for they were informed that the building was closed for repairs during the summer and they must seek shelter elsewhere. CHAPTER II September rolled around, and again the group readied themselves for an ed- ucation, for this was what they had been told was the word to use when speak- ing of their nine months of inhabitanting the land of wonder. This year a member of the fairer sex was chosen to lead thanin the events of school life. Mary Ruth Whittington did a good job in directing her fellow classmates in their activities. Assisting this lady were two members of the faculty who proved to be both helpful and fun. They were Mrs. Cole and Miss Omar ( now Trenton). Our thanks go to them for being so patient and understanding. The name of the group had by now been legally changed to Sophomore and their hearts overflowed with pride for seven members of their class were on both the football and basketball teams. If they looked hard enough they could see a little smile of admiration from the higher classes who were be- ginning to be both friends and advisors. As graduation grew near they began to feel lonesome for those who would leave and thankful that they would again return to the HAVEN ON THE HILL. The graduating Seniors bestowed a great honor on the group by asking them to decorate the auditorium for the com- mencement exercises. CHAPTER III With wild anticipation they found themselves again wearily trodding the now familiar path to their cherished TE MPLE OF KNOWLEDGE. This proved to one of their most memorable years for it brought forth their play TROUBLE IN PARA- DISE which was very successful. Also to add in their book of unforgetables was the great celebration better known as the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet at which they acted as host. The relationship between the tw leading class- es had become one of mutal esteem. Richard Farley was the leader of their progressive group and their sponsors were Miss Wilmore and Mrs. Cole who — ; eo a Se Ry SE BE taught them the right way and even took their hands to keep them from going astray. They also had a large number of students participating in the school activities and proving themselves very worthy. Looking forward to the honor to be placed on their shoulders the following year, they left school for the summer dreaming of the fall when they would stand at the top and be looked upon as Seniors, the leaders of the school. CHAPTER IV The year 199-50 will go down in both the hearts and memories of all that were left of the group for it was the year they were to be graduated and the year the man they had all admired for his sense of humor, his coaching, and his personality came to rule and to bring renown to the school. This man is Lewey Dalton, who is ofter called King Lewey I. Immediatley upon entering this term they ordered their classrings and invitations. From their midst came a great leader, Horald Walker, who intelligently led them happily through the year. An outstanding event was the adoption of Student Govern- ment under which the students will benefit by assuming responsibilities. Jim Anderson was one of the people who ran around being helpful and doing it so well, that upon his shoulders was laid the job of Editor of the Annual and President of the newly organized Key Club, strictly for boys. The Carnvial Court was one of impressive beauty with Zelda Compton and Billy Tickle reigning as our King and Queen. The night of Cornation will long be remembered by all those who attended. It was discovered not only was there beauty. and personality in the class but also talent which was displayed from time to time. Still another chapter is to be added, as they anxiously await their Senior play, and their trip to the Union Capitol. Before ending this history they wish to tip their hats in appreciation to Mrs. Wetzel and Mrs. Damron who have impressed them with their wisdom and their words of encouragement, without which they would doubtless have failed. Mr. Dalton should be honored tco, for he has’ been not only a principal but also a friend. To him we say Goodbye and Good Luck in the future for there is no doubt that he will accomplish his desire for a school for and by the pupils, working in close co-operation with the faculty. As the time draws near to don caps and gowns and walk sedatel y down the aisle, them realize that they will have conauered the first bridgeof life and will be approaching a longer and more complicated bridge with many roads branching from its exit. The sweet simplicity of their beloved school days will be cherised as their dearest memory.
