It was very warm and the streets had that dusty look of August, and the leaves hung listless on dull trees. Women were walking about in cotton frocks and the men were hatless. There was a smell of waste-paper, orange peel, and burnt dried grass. The surroundings, as they so often do in a dream, seemed changed, and there were only a few things which were familiar to me. just outside of town, l came upon a little white, vine covered cottage, surrounded by a low picket fence with roses climbing all along the top. Being tired, I stopped at the cottage to beg a drink of water and much to my surprise the pretty housewife who answered my knock was Mrs. Brebeck, our former senior sponser. As we talked, the postman, who I recognized at Walter Devor, drove up with the afternoon mail, and included in the parcels was an announcement of the marriage of Miss Mae Morgan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amick Morgan of War, West Virginia. How well I remember the day Iva and Amick were married back in 1942 on Christmas day. This started me wondering what had become of the rest of the class of '43 annd I imme- diately began inquiring about my former classmates. I learned that G. Bailey became the new minister at the Methodist church recently. He preaches on Sunday and drives the school bus during the week. Ernie Bertock, who was fighting in New Guinea during the war, liked it so well there that when peace came once more, he wired Wanda Smith that if she wanted to marry him she would have to live there, so Wanda boarded the next ship and hasnit been heard from since. , Pearlie Mae Barbour operates the swankiest beauty salon in Southwestern Virginia. She turned out to be the second Helena Rubenstein. Arlene Goosby was America's second Amelia Ear- hart and her fate was very much the same as Amelia's. She was last seen flying east over Falls Mills Lake. Margaret Carbaugh is teaching English at Gra- ham and among her pupils are many children of our former faculty and they are having as difficult time as we had back in '42 and '43. Joe Oblinger is the proprietor of Joe's Smoke joint, the miost noted gambling house east of the Miss- issippi River. Very often Chief of Police Gene Devor takes joe down to the town hall flor questioning by Judge james Bates. But Judge Bates, who is very sympathetic person, always decides in Joeis favor. Leta Mae Anderson and Aileen Crabtree decided to lead the Saunders twins to the altar and the result was disastrous for when it was over Leta had married Ernest, and Aileen had married Everett. It was to have been the other way around. Bill Longworth was recently made editor of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Sunset News, and Eugene fDocJ White was made president of the Chicago House Furnishing Company. These are two of Bluelield's most prosperous business men. Eleanor fAbej Moses and Harold Mathena are residing in New York and Mr. and Mrs. and are Washington. Eleanor is a famous Powers model and Harold is a senator from Virginia. the President of Columbia Robert Gillespie is University. Among his faculty we see the names of Peggy Burton, Jo Ann Harman and Gene Gentry who are professors of Geo. Politics and also Rufus Harmon and Thelma Boswell who are teachers of Economics. Among the students of this noted University is Freeman Turley, Jr., son of Dr. and Mrs. Freeman Turley of Chicago. Mrs. Turley was formerly Margaret fPerkQ Painter and Dr. Turley is now chief of Staff at City Hospital in Chicago. - Luther fFridayj Barrett is football and basket-ball coach at Notre Dame while his wife, formerly Miss Shirley Compton, remains at home and has charge of their twenty room mansion. Friday will always be remembered for his outstanding playing, especially in basketball back in '4-3. A Jacqueline Christian married a handsome doctor from Lewis Gale in Roanoke, Virginia where she was in training. All reports say she couldn't be happier. Mr. and Mrs. Earl fArtieJ Shaw are now living in Billsbuy, Virginia where Earl is in charge of a large power plant which is located there. Mrs. Shaw was Miss Nelda Carter. Louise Teague, Roberta Mize and Helen Bell have established an old ladies home for wealthy widows who haven't any relatives or any place to go. Shirley Mahood ran away with a fellow from Sarver's Garage. I will always remember the day Shirley got her new front tooth and how, for weeks later, she was annoyed by curious classmates and on- lookers who wished to view that spectacular piece of art which filled such an important place in her life. Mary Broyles and Mable Burnett are two of Blucstone's most prosperous farmerettes. Their crops consist of everything except corn, of which, they say, they get enough of on the radio. Betty Ellen Long is living in the cream of society. Her husband, Fred Kitts, is with the Metropolitan Opera Company which lately has been touring exten- sively throughout Europe. LeRoy Flowers, Clarence Hill and Ernest ,Hon- aker are partners in a Clinic called The Come to Us If You Want to Risk Your Life Hospital. They aren't doing so well and can't understand why. Bobby Smith is the governor of Virginia and Marjorie Harmon is his private secretary. I knew Marjorie wasn't learning all that shorthand for nothing. Peggy Lam-bert and Jackie Wysor are giving mar- ried life a try and so far so good, so what! Leon Gill invented a hair tonic and when he tried fConlinued on Page 45j Page 15 EE' 'ff 05 ff Yea .fn , O '53-r i aff' ' Plillll Ui THE ElHSSMj3?f't! . Clifford Compton, Wallace Kerley, and Billy Pippin are now important members of the International Peace Board and are residing at Casablanca.
