Now the freedom is upon us to do whatever we please with the rest of our lives. Freedom was especially present in 1976. Rights and Responsibilities of Public High School Students,” a booklet published by the West Virginia Board of Education this year, defined student rights. It is a long walk to freedom, but now it is up to each and every student to choose what kind of person he will be. What each one makes of himself is his own choice. Grafton High School has only been the beginning. 5 Big 10 Champs — Regional Champs Awesome is the bst word to describe the 1975-76 Bearcats. Their power was beyond imagination. Coach Butch Has-well feels their main strength was the fact that they believed in each other. This main strength was backed up with great team coordination, poise, defense, rebounding, hustle, and a fantastic shooting ability. The mighty Bearcats were followed faithfully to every game by their numerous fans. The unbelievable aspect of the Bearcats’ season was the way the whole town supported their efforts. 6 FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS: Larry Harton, president; Mike Stockctt, vice-president; Charlene Wiseman, secretary; and Amy Hefferin. treasurer. The class that the junior officers represent, in the fall, is getting ready to fall into the role of seniors. Winter is represented by the senior class officers. They have reached the end of their high school lives. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS FRONT Ion Murphy, president. Dag Hammarskjold 8 9 Student life means . . . daydreaming in class fun in the halls initiations into clubs activities held once a year. It means YOU . . . cheering on the team leading your class excelling in a sport or subject learning to drive selling candles, notecards, fruit dissecting frogs and rabbits enjoying free time. Student life is living every way you know how. 12 what now? all these years spent struggling within my cocoon, fightin, tearing, waiting for a birth of freedom . . . and now i find it has unfolded, easily and gently, in its own time, and i stand motionless — hypnotized by the beauty and colour of my new freedom wings. The underclassmen and faculty took advantage of the chance to buy a senior for 50C and use them as a slave. We all found out that George Jenkins loves his teddy bear. It turned out to be a fun day for everyone, including the Seniors. 3a ALAN CHRIS VARNER RICHARD WESTERMAN VONDA LEE WOLFE MICHAEL DEAN WOLFE RHONDA YVONNE WILLIAMS JERRY DALE WOLFE DIANA LYNN WOODS RICHARD ALLEN ZINN 1976 Grafton High School Graduates Baccalaureate Rev. He is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand He has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It need must be, since he lingers there. And you — oh, you, who in wildest years For an old time step, and the glad return, Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here. Think of him still as the same. I say, He is not dead — he is just away. 48 —James Whitcomb Riley Sophomores It was the beginning of another school year, for the class of 78. Sophomores got a good start on class participation with the Homecoming activities. Hall decorations went well for sophomores who won the spirit chain with great sophomore spirit! Also sophomores were the only class to enter a float in the Homecoming Parade. Although our float didn't win anything, we had a lot of fun working on it,” said Linda Frey, sophomore class president. Then there was powderpuff. Defeating the freshman girls the first night, sophomores were beaten by the senior girls. Our girls had fun preparing for the games and the guys got a big laugh out of it,” Linda commented. The next big event was class tournaments. Sophomores’ theme was Almost Heaven West Virginia.” Throughout the year there were sophomores participating in nearly every club and activity offered at GHS. Many have contributed a great deal and that’s something to be proud of. Powderpuff season came around and the freshman girls placed third. They beat the junior girls in a consolation game. The freshmen sold tickets for the shopping spree to raise money for decorations and raised $400. Varsity Week 1975-76 In February GHS celebrated a new tradition called Varsity Week. This observance was jointly sponsored by the Keywanettes and the Student Council. It was designed to honor the basketball players much like Homecoming honors the football players. As in Homecoming a court was chosen as well as a queen and they are pictured on this page. Twerp Day was also held during the week for the basketball players and Ron Heav-ner was named Mr. Irresistible. The festivities took place at half-time of the game on February 20 when the queen was crowned and the court also appeared. On Saturday night the Varsity Ball was held; this ended the week’s activities. 123 Christmas Dance Charlene Harman and Mark Robinson seem to enjoy the Christmas Dance The 1975-76 school year was highlighted by the Christmas Dance held December 20. It was sponsored by the Student Council who also sold the refreshments. Musical entertainment was provided by the Jon.” The dances ranged from the ever-popular close and slow, right up to the bump” and the hustle.” Girls received corsages for this semi-formal dance. During the dance, Santa, alias Mark Sciegaj, dropped in and let the girls sit on his lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. (Of course this was his idea!) M.A.; Home Economics, Food Occutwnon Services School Administration Mr. Robert E. Straight Principal 1975-76 has brought many memorable highlights to Grafton High School such as our First National Merit Scholarship finalist in years, successful musical student exchange with Newton High School, our first major Band Trip to Disney World, a very active student body in extra-curricular activities, highly successful basketball season, expanded guidance services to our students and the expansion of our curriculum to include thirteen new classes. I cannot help but feel that Grafton High School offers more opportunities than any other high school in West Virginia for educational and social growth. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students, faculty and staff of Grafton High School this year. With the expansion of activities and curriculum it has been a pleasure to oversee the growth of opportunities for our students. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF ’76 We are certain that the years spent at Grafton High School have been both pleasant and profitable for you, so congratulations to the graduates of 1976. We believe that your formal education has equipped you to become a well-rounded individual and that you will be a contributing part to the present society, as well as a participant in its future development. We hope that your high school training has prepared you to struggle always for freedom, which means only to do the things which are right and not simply what one desires. Your fellow students, faculty and administration are confident in your ability to face the future problems you will encounter and be able to do this with success and happiness because of your having graduated from Grafton High School. Mr. Straight Mr. Gregory Cartwright Assistant Principal The 1975-76 school year has been enjoyable, interesting and rewarding. The highlight of the year for me has been the implementation of the new attendance policy at Grafton High School. This policy has proved successful in improving attendance. Although 1 certainly miss teaching and the resulting contact with the students in the class room, I have enjoyed this school year very much. Grafton High School implies a fine group of people. This includes not only the student body, but also the faculty and staff. This is evidenced by the ever increasing list of opportunities available to students. Thos students who are willing to take advantage of the opportunities afforded them will, without question, result in fine, well-prepared individuals who can make a meaningful contribution to the world into which they will soon be thrown. It was a very worthwhile experience. The students of Grafton High School are always welcomed at their meetings. Their ideas and feelings are always wanted and welcomed. Mr. Dellinger Superintendent of Schools In his first year as county superintendent Mr. Dellinger was extremely pleased with the friendliness of the students. He was also impressed with the kindness they showed to him. I have the sincere desire that the students will be as friendly in years to come,” Mr. Dellinger said. Born in Mattinsburg, W.Va., Mr. Dellinger attended Musselman High School. He graduated from Shepherd College in 1964.
