Adding greatly to each game was the GHS Bearcat Pep Band and the majorettes, who performed before each home game. The spirit of the fans was greatly improved due mainly to the Bearcats themselves who chalked up an impressive 15-5 record. 12 13 14 Strange fascination, fascinating me Changes are taking the pace I’m going thru Changes Changes Look out you Rock’n Rollers Changes Changes Pretty soon you’re gonna get a little older Time may change me But I can’t trace time. 16 GRADUATING CLnss GARY ROBERT BAKER CHERYL RAE BARRAM PATTY ANN BARTHELEMY MARK LYLE BAUGHMAN Future Farmers of America 3, 4; Class Tournament Basketball Team 1, 3, 4; Football Team Manager 3 Powderpuff Football Team 4 Future Homemakers of America 3, 4; Treasurer 4; Teacher's Aide 4; Servette 3 VICA 3.4 JEFFREY LEON BAIR Class Pres. 4; Spanish Honor Society 2, 3, 4, Class Tournament Basketball 1, 4; Future Mixed Chorus 2; Future Homemakers of Pres 4; Quill Scroll Honor Soc. 4; Student Farmers of America 1, 2, 3, 4, Sentinel America 3; VICA 4 Council 1,4; Choir 3, 4; Entertainers 4; Band Reporter 4; VICA 3,4 4; Key Club 3,4; Re-Echo 3.4; Bearcat” Staff ERIC STEVEN ANDREWS RONALD KEITH ANDREWS VIRGINIA LEE AUSTIN Seniors PAMELA SUE BENNETT SHARLE ANN BENNETT JOHN CARLOS BEVILOCK JOICE ELLEN BOGGS Student Council 2, 3; French Club 2, 3; Secretary 3; Powdcrpuff 1; Teacher’s Aide 4; Future Homemakers of America 4 Prom Queen 4; J.V. CK' r Seniors Trample Underclassmen This year’s Powderpuff Football sports were proved to be most successful for the Seniors who won the championship by winning first over the Juniors and then over the Sophomores. This annual sports tradition was held October 8 and 9 at McKinney Field. The October 8 games featured the Juniors against the Seniors and the Sophomores against the Freshmen. In the first game the Seniors overpowered the Juniors by the store of 19 to 2, both of the touchdowns being made by Linda Leach. In the championship playoffs the Senior team proved victorious again by winning over the Sophomores to take the title for the 1974-75 year. In the game touchdowns were made by Pricilla Mcncar, Linda Leach and Cheryl Barram for the winning score of 23 13. 37 Senior Slave Day 1975 Boy! Is this school filthy!' Evel Kneivel’s at it again. I knew they would catch me sometime Teacher. I have to go to the bathroom I just can’t get these tennis shoes clean — I think I'm gonna CRASH!!’ Class of ’75 Finally Receives Initiation Strange-looking creatures decorated the Grafton High School halls on Senior Slave Day on Thursday, March 13. Slaves came in a variety of sizes, kinds, and shapes. Slaves ranged from cleaning ladies to clowns, to those who stumbled around in army boots and even people going around in wheelchairs. The annual event is sponsored by the Senior Class officers. The main purpose is just for the pure fun” of seeing the Seniors dressing up and having to obey their masters, the underclassmen. Senior Slave Day breaks up the everyday monotony of school. Here comes Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. What are you looking at — I look like this every day. 39 Ridolfi Addresses Graduates On Sunday evening, May 25, 1975, the Senior Class of GHS held their Senior Sermon at eight o’clock in the Grafton High School auditorium. The signal of graduates s Commencement for the class of 1975 was held on June 1, 1975 at 2:00 p.m. Although scheduled to be held on McKinney Field, for the first time, pouring rains moved the graduation ceremony to the GHS auditorium. The Processional, Pomp and Circumstance, played by the GHS Band marched the seniors into the auditorium. The ceremony was opened by Rev. Charles Roth, the Church of the Good Shepherd, who gave the Invocation. The platform was decorated with the class flowers, rose and daisy in the class colors, lavender and white. The Grafton High School Band, directed by Earl McConnell, Jr., played the Class Song, Yesterday, by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Mr. Robert E. Straight introduced the featured speaker, the Honorable Richard Neely, Judge of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. He spoke on The Role of Character in a World of Impersonal Enemies.” He emphasized throughout a very powerful speech that their generation differed from their fathers’ generation in that the enemies now are not particular people as it was in the previous generations. Neely stated that the graduates would enter the world competing inanimate objects as computers. After Neely’s speech Mr. Straight presented the class to Paul C. Bartlett, retiring Superintendent of Taylor County Schools. The diplomas were then distributed out by Dr. Charles E. Bennett of the Taylor County Board of Education. After receiving of the diplomas, Eric Andrews, class president, led the Class of 1975 in the turning of the tassel and singing of the Alma Mater. Rev. Harry T. Rowe of the 1st Baptist Church gave the Benediction. A reception was held in the library following the graduation ceremony. r. . . The Entertainer,” Spinning Wheel,” Mister Sandman,” Sunny,” and Time in a Bottle.” Anything Goes 1974 Dinner-Theatre Production 70 The entire story of Anything Goes” took place on the S.S. American sailing from New York to England. The relationship of the people on this boat to one another forms the core of the plot. Eric Andrews portrayed the male lead, Billy Crocker. Billy headed the action when the ticket and passport he held belonged to public enemy number one. This passport was given to Billy by Moonface (Tom Rcncau), public enemy number thirteen, attempting to become public enemy number one with the aid of Bonnie, a dizzy blonde (Kim Sandor). Billy uses disguises to escape from the authorities and to be near Hope, his ex-girlfriend (Donna Jean Knotts). The plot complicates though when Billy discovers that Hope is engaged to an Englishman, Sir Evelyn (Brian McMullen). Hope’s engagement w'as partially arranged by her elderly mother, Mrs. Harcourt (Susi Turner). Billy also advised Whitney (Dan Turner), a wall street broker. Reno Sweeney, the female lead and also a close friend of Billy, was portrayed by Deddie Lantz. Reno offered her help to Billy in regaining Hope. Reno and her three angels (Missy Mason, Diana Gerard, and Kim Haskins) add life to the story with their activities aboard the S.S. American.” Lynn Gough, a bishop, is on his way to China with Ching (Sharle Bennett) and Ling (Melinda Thom), two Chinese, when apprehended by the law in place of Moon-face. Those in charge of the ship were the captain (Dale Stevens); purser (Mike Slavcn) and two sailors (Tedd Wolfe and Frank Sandor). A reporter (Mike Stevens) and a cameraman (Keith Jaco) add action to the first few scenes. Anything Goes” was directed by Anita Sandor with Mr. Ken Godwin serving as musical director. Honor TERESA WISEMAN SUSI TURNER DONNA K. KNOTTS Teresa Wiseman — To the great class of ’75 I wish all the love, luck and happiness in the world. To future classes, I wish much luck and many good times at GHS. I’d like to thank Mrs. Betty Ridolfi for all of her help. Susi Turner — We are free to go where we wish and to be what we are . . .” Uncertainty should not curb our eagerness nor the variety of our choices. Donna K. Knotts — I believe there are two important parts to success. These two parts are decision and ambition. Decide what goal you want to achieve in life, and take pleasure in working toward it. You get out of life what you put into it.” Bill Rogers — co-valedictorian, expresses his feelings in this way. He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory is a benediction. — Mrs. A. J. Stanley MELINDA THORN To do easily what is difficult for others is the mark of talent. To do what is impossible for talent is the mark of genius. — Henri Frederic Amici BILL ROGERS Donna Jean Knotts — Happiness lies in the taste, and not in things; and it is from having what we desire that we are happy — not from having what others think desirable. La Rochefoucauld Donna J. Fortney — I have a special request for the classes of 76,’ '77 and '78.’ For the remainder of your years at GHS would you please give — give your time and devotion — give of yourself. Unite and put your heart into making GHS the best school ever! Janet Smith — I wish the students, teachers, and my friends at GHS good luck and happiness.” DONNA JEAN KNOTTS DONNA J. FORTNEY JANET SMITH 78 Students Joyce Boggs — Much may be done in those little shreds and patches of time, which every day produces, and which most men throw away, but which nevertheless will make at the end of it no small deduction from the life of man. — Colton Denise Turoczy — The most valuable possessions I have had at GHS were my friends. Friends help see you through your problems and cushion the bumps in life. I thank my friends for caring. Good luck, follow your dreams, and love your fellowman. Marcia Sturm — Think not of the amount to be accomplished, the difficulties to be overcome, but set earnestly at the little task at your elbow, letting that be sufficient for the day. — Osier JOICE BOGGS DENISE TUROCZY MARCIA STURM Dennine Setler — Co-valedictorian expresses her feelings in this poem. This is the one thing that I have to share. Take this love I leave, and spread it everywhere. And Sandi, please don’t cry; the tears you hide are raining in my heart. So take my hand; the love we learned has been returned and it can never die. — M.S. KIM SANDOR % If you ever find happiness by hunting for it, you will find it as the old woman did her lost spectacles, safe on her own nose all the time. —Josh Billings DENNINE SETLER TOM DOUGHERTY CAROL HOVATTER LYNN HARDMAN Tom Dougherty — GHS was good to me. I just hope it’s as good to the future classes in their future years. Carol Hovatter — I would like to thank everyone who helped me, especially my mother. May the Class of 75 live on forever. Lynn Hardman — In my memories of GHS, the friends I’ve made arc my most precious thoughts, and to these friends I wish the best. 79 Educator of the Year Quadratic equations, vertical angles, and matrices, are just a few of the mathematical things this year’s Educator of the Year has taught us. Mr. Cartwright was chosen as this year’s Educator of the Year by the Re-Echo staff. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Cartwright of Buckhannon. His wife is the former Lynn Johnson. A record of three wins and seven losses is not really impressive, but the record doesn’t really show the close games, the teamwork and the real heartache of losing the close ones. Starting with Philip-Barbour the football team made an impressive 23-6 victory. Bridgeport was supposed to have been the next victim of the Bearcats, but Murphy’s Law (if anything can go wrong — it will) seemed to prevail as Bridgeport upset Grafton 7-0. Rain seemed to follow Grafton around and when W-I came to Grafton that’s what they got. John Corio was the spark for this game with three touchdowns to his record. The final score was Grafton 26, W-I 16. After losing two in a row to West Fairmont and Buckhannon (both of these teams were ranked high in the state) the Bearcats defeated Lewis County at the Homecoming game by a score of 18-6. This was to be Grafton’s last win of the year and though it was quite disappointing to some, the team never quite gave up. liven down to last moments of the Elkins game there still was a kind of pride radiating from every member of the team. — Coach Don Swisher Coach Swisher talking things over with Mr. Straight Corio headed for a touchdown L to r: D. After 18-and-a-half years of serving Taylor County as the Superintendent of Schools, Paul C. Bartlett resigned. This became ef fective on June 30, 1975. He began forty-three years ago teaching in a one-room school in the county. He worked for fiftcen-and-a-half years as director of education at the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys. Between his appointment at West Virginia Industrial School for Boys and his teaching experience, he was an attendance officer for two years. Thirty-seven years has been spent in the educational systems of the county, with fifty percent of the time served as superintendent. Having been at the head of the county school system for so many years, he is noted as the Dean of Superintendents. In the past there have been superintendents serving in various counties for extended periods of time. Nine times various boards of education have unanimously renewed Bartlett’s contract as superintendent. We the students of Grafton High School want to express our best wishes to Mr. Bartlett in his future plans. 142 and now, a word from our sponsors TY0ART LAKE LODGE Frank and Anita Sandor Congratulations Class of 1975 GRAFTON PRINTING SERVICE Congratulations Graduates Good Luck and Success KOM-PAC STORE BIG JOHNS RESTAURANT 1 15 West Main Street Main Street, Grafton Barbara and Bob Craft, Managers Congratulations Class of 1975 Good Luck Graduates BILL'S T.V.
