Mrs. Be tty Rose Morrison Mrs. Morrison has been teaching social studies at G.H.S. for the past five years. Her teaching career began at Grafton High as band director during 1914 to 1943. Some of the duties as band director were the teaching of student instrumentation throughout the county and also directing elementary school operettas. She then left the teaching profession for two years; she re-entered the field at Grafton Jr. High School as the eighth grade social studies instructor in 1939 where she remained for ten years. Mrs. M” graduated from West Virginia University with a major in music and a minor in social studies, after attending the Grafton Area Schools for her elementary and secondary-education. Student contact and the lasting friendships formed over the years arc the most enjoyable-aspects of teaching.” said Mrs. Morrison. She commented that school is more student oriented than it was 20 to 30 years ago” and that it is more responsive to the student’s demands.” Mrs. Morrison is a very- considerate teacher, and she has always cared about the benefit of the students. She is always full of pep and spirit and always has a smile on her face. Congratulations to Mrs. Morrison who most certainly deserved the honor of the 1973-74 Teacher of the Year. Mike Knight. Ron Moats, (ieorge Jenkins, Bruce Leonard. A R Lake, Joe Garrett. Tom Reed. Roger Seller. Mike Ware and Coach Butch Haswell The 1973-1974 basketball season was very successful. A new coach seemed to bring a new' atmosphere to GHS. It also seemed to lift the school spirit. There were two attractions at GHS basketball games this year; one was the much improved play of the team and the other was the antics of Coach Butch Haswcll, he would take off his tie and then coat and then he would immediately roll up his sleeves. Coach didn't seem to be- at ease unless he had a towel to throw around and knot up. In There The highlight of the 73-74 season was the Bearcat victory over the Morgantown Mohigans, who were undefeated and ranked second in the state until they met the Bearcats at Grafton High School gym. The Bearcats defeated the Mohigans 71-64. George Jenkins goes up for two The team and coach both deserve a lot of credit for a job well done. The team finished with an 11-9 record. This was the first time in many years that the Bearcats defeated the Bridgeport Indians, they not only beat them once, but beat them twice. No team beat them more than twice in regular season in many years. A lot of the games the team lost were very close ones. Many were lost in the last few seconds Mike Ware battles his way for a basket 54 The boys gather around as Coach Haswell offers words of encouragement and directions during a time-out. The starting line-up for Grafton varied at the beginning of the season, but Coach Haswdl soon settled on two seniors, one junior, and two sophomores. Joe Garrett and Blaine Minney both had an exceptional year and terminated their varsity career on a fine performance in the sectional tournament. Joe Garrett played outstanding in the tournament and was awarded by being named to the All Tournament Team. Garrett was also named to the All County Team sponsored by the Guardian Blaine Minney was selected to the All County Team, played steady all year round and was awarded to the Honorable Mention All Big Ten Team. Mark Robinson and George Jenkins should continue to perform well in their remaining two years with a year of varsity behind them. Mike Knight showed nothing but hustle and should offer a strong hand in his last year as a Bearcat. The Class of 74 once again used their talent to overpower everybody that stood in their way to gain their fourth victory in as many years of competition. This makes the first class ever to accomplish such a feat since the tournaments have been held. When a chaperone was needed for a dance or a faculty member had to be present for a school function, he was always there. In class he liked to joke but only so far. Discipline was always enforced by him. The Coach” said while he was at Grafton High School he enjoyed most, beating Lewis County and Fairmont West in football in 1973. He also enjoyed dances and proms. He said that the participation of students in so many extracurricular activities and the desire of students to learn most impressed him while he was here. Mr. Davis graduated from Jane Lew High School in 1958, he received his AB degree from Glenville State College and he received his masters degree, from W. Va. in 1971. Mr. Davis will take over the post of principal of Tera Alta High School starting in the fall. Mr. Gene Davis Rocky Loughry seems to be very sure of the outcome of this game Joe Garrett tried just a little bit too hard. The game between the Texas Cowgirls and the men Faculty of GHS was enjoyed by all who saw it. Mark Robinson is all smiles after hitting his home run in this game and having a standout performance from the mound. Rick Jackson is stopped by a WI opponent. Under the capable direction of Coach Butch” Haswell the team of 1974 produced a 5-13 record. Being a 1st year team Coach Haswell feels his boys did a good job. The highlight of the year was beating West Fairmont who later competed in the State tournament. Behind the great hitting of George Jenkins who made 2nd string Big 10 team, and Dave Hussion who got honorable mention, the team came up with some big upsets. 63 GHS Cheerleaders 1973-1974 Suzanne Shay — Head DeAnna Onfield — Co-Head Elissa Canfield The 1973-74 Grafton High School Cheerleaders immensely improved the spirit of the student body. The girls seemed full of energy and pep at all times. The Cheerleaders represented our school to the best of their ability. DeAnna Canificld, cohead, and Suzane Shay, head cheerleader did an outstanding job of leading the staff. The staff will greatly miss these two departing seniors. At Christmas time they aided the Salvation Army in sponsoring a drive for canned goods throughout the school. The highlight of the year was the induction ceremony which consisted of: Pledge to the Flag by Janice Roach, prayer by Blaine Minney, welcome address by Dave Knotts, speech on the history of the National Honor Society by Sandra Donham. Speeches on the qualifications of members were given by Becky Gough (Scholarship), Joyce Reneau (Character), Gayla Fortney (Service), and Sandy Barton (Leadership). Linda Keener, gave the oath to the new members and Bob King closed the ceremony with a prayer. The contest gave our homecoming parade a much needed lift and greatly increased the spirit for the Iwmietoming activities. As the year progressed, many other projects were undertaken. Two service projects for the faculty of GHS were sponsored. One being the celebration of the Spanish Christmas and the other being a Spring Teacher’s Tea. For the Easter season the society sponsored an Easter party for the elderly at the Rest Haven Nursing Home. The highlight of the service projects was the ushering and serving of refreshments for rhe Spring Production of Calamity Jane.” To begin the new year 10 students were inducted into the Spanish Honor Society on January 24th. The ceremony was held in the school auditorium with a reception immediately following in the cafeteria. A number of school officials and prominent area citizens attended the affair. The next major event for the members was the 1st annual Officers Banquet held on Thursday evening. May 16th. Installed at the banquet were the newly-elected officers of the society; Eric Andrews, President; Donna Fortney, Vice-President; Carol Hovatter. Corresponding Secretary; Nancy Mewshaw. Recording Secretary; Mark Latta, Treasurer and Michelle Gerkin. Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee In closing the 1973-74 school year, the Spanish Honor Society sponsored a float contest for the Memorial Day Parade. Under the new English program, journalism was taught on an elective basis. Students from the first journalism classes formed the central core of the paper. With the help of the CENTRAL WEST VIRGINIA GUARDIAN, a local newspaper, students were able to do their own composition and receive valuable training in all areas of newspaper work. Six issues were printed on a monthly basis with the last edition being dedicated to the graduating class. Regular features included an astrology column, a record column, a car column, and a senior of the month. The junior and senior staff members working from the beginning of the year and maintaining good scholastic standing were named members of the Quill and Scroll, the International Honorary for High School Journalists. The Quill and Scroll’s original charter had been inactive for several years, but received new life with the beginning of the GHS Alpha Chapter. The staff can be especially proud of the professional manner in which the paper was conducted and the variety of news covered. The local merchants who advertised with the paper should be commended, for without their patronage there would not have been a paper. These students raised the money that paid for the paper. 97 Bearcat Writing Staff Writing the majority of the stories for the GHS Bearcat were the staff pictured above Row 1, L to R: Sandy Barton. The first year was the worst!!! The crowd and the other teams were sure the best would win, but everyone seemed quite certain it wouldn’t be the Freshmen. They all said, The Freshmen never win.” Little did everyone know, the Class of 74’ was out to do more than play — they were going to win. Win, they did, to everyone’s surprise and as the four years went on everyone was quite confident that the Class of 74’ would win again, although nobody quit trying to take the championship away from them. The goal of all classes from the first game on was beat the girls of 74.’ Fast running and a huge desire to win made each victory relatively easy. Being the first class in Grafton High to capture both titles, each game was won with little difficulty. They were a little nervous in the first game but once it was won they were unable to be stopped. In class tournaments, each game was won by more than twenty points. The team was unusual because the bench was just as capable as the starters. The girls of the class of 74’ will long be remembered for their outstanding athletic achievement at Grafton High School. 100 . a c+iv Lilies m c. y DAN C S DRfrP'MX PLftV KNQP YOUR STMtT BnY MD 6lR I. Out of the Career Center came many organizations such as V.I.C.A. and F.B.L.A. The main administrators, Mr. Chipps, Mr. Nuzum, and Mr. Banco, have a difficult job due to the fact that Shinston, WI, RW, South Harrison, Flemington, and Liberty, as well as Grafton sent students eager to learn a trade. The United Career Center wasn’t all work. Many dances and banquets were sponsored by the Organizations. There were Christmas dances, get acquainted parties, and Farewell dances, along with an awards banquet for F.B.L.A. members and office staff. The F.B.L.A. a main organization sells ice cream, doughnuts, coffee, and hot chocolate at break” time in order to raise money to send students to a National Convention in San Francisco. This year also proved that, much needed vocational education will be successful in training tomorrow’s leaders. It rehearsed and presented two plays for the student body to enjoy this year. Mrs. Newlon started the year off as the head of the drama department and got many students interested in acting. As a result of her efforts a play, The Red Carnation,” was presented to the student body at Christmas time. The actors in this play were Jill Bledsoe, Tom Sturm, and David Thompson and was enjoyed thoroughly by the entire student body as part of the Christmas program. However, Mrs. Newlon left our school in late winter, but she was replaced by a well qualified teacher. Miss Fox, who kept the department well on the way. As a result of her efforts, A Long Journey,” a one act play was presented to the student body. The actors in this play were Guy Ward, Suzi Turner, Teresa Wiseman, Dale Rogers, Vicki Roy, and Kim Weaver. This play captured the family life of an American family on a trip to visit a relative. The mother talks to the neighbor. The Mother explaining that they are leaving on a journey to her elder daughter’s house. The youngest daughter listens in on her mother’s conversation. The family finally gas started on the long journey and enjoys the sights along the way 108 The family arrives at their destination and are welcomed warmly by their relatives. Sweetheart Dance This year GHS was brightened up by the 3rd annual Sweetheart. This is a formal dance where the girls have a chance to pick their date. The student council decided to make this dance a girl’s choice just for the excitement. A lot of people decided to come and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. To make the Christmas holidays more enjoyable, the Student Council sponsored the 1974 Christmas Dance on Dec. 22, 1973. The students were entertained by the music of Porte Authority, from Clarksburg. The dance was a semi-formal dance and the array of girl’s costumes varied from pants suits to formal dresses. The boys wore suits and tics and enjoyed themselves greatly as did their dates. Everyone Listens Carefully. The Very Beginning. Goals in Life, was the theme of Reverend Reneau’s sermon. His main point was all people should have goals to meet just like all sports have goals. Now that the seniors are graduating, they have reached the major goal of their 12 years of education. Now another goal must be made to succeed in building a good life for themselves. The Choir Sings Graduation Senator Byrd speaks on the goodness of working with the hands. He noted that every person has a place in society no matter what kind of job he does. The nation will always prosper if people will work and honor other people’s jobs. Senator Byrd personally presented Sherry Barker, 1974 Valedictorian, her scholarship award and bond. Marching to the Beginning of the End. Switching the Tassel. 133 A Long Goal Finally Ended. The Diploma Tears Roll Down My Cheeks I Cannot Say Good-Bye The Words Just Won t Come So I Cry. MC After the graduation ceremony, a reception was held in the library for Senator Byrd. The Senator received the seniors and guests while refreshments were being served by the senior parents and teachers. 34 1974 Graduates THE TOUCH OF THE MASTER’S HAND Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer Thought it scarcely worth his while To waste much time on the old violin. But held it up with a smile: What am I bidden, good folks,” he cried, Who’ll start the bidding for me?” A dollar, a dollar;” then, Then, Two!” Only two? Two dollars, and who’ll make it three? Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice; Going for three —” But no, From the room, far back, a gray-haired man Came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust from the old violin. And tightening the loose strings, He played a melody pure and sweet As a caroling angel sings. The music ceased, and the auctioneer. With a voice that was quiet and low, Said, What am I bid for the old violin?” And he held it up with the bow. A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice. And going, and gone,” said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, We do not quite understand What changed its worth.” Swift came the reply; The touch of a master’s hand.” And many a man with life out of tune. And battered and scarred with sin, Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, Much like the old violin. A mess of pottage,” a glass of wine; A game — and he travels on. He is going” once, and going” twice. He’s going” and almost gone.” But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd Never can quite understand The worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought By the touch of the Master’s hand.
