Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1973 volume:

RE-ECHO 1973 Grafton High School Grafton, West Virginia Foreword: The years you spend in high school mean many things to many people: To a senior the last year is the climax of four of the most important and rewarding years of his or her life. To the student, a year consist of memories, dances and study. To the faculty the year is composed of lesson plans, faculty meetings and sponsoring of organizations. To the athlete and his coaches the year is seen as one in which a winning season is sought, To the organizations the year is hustle, planning, parties and friendships never to be forgotten. To the editor and his staff, an adventure always has an end. . . and this is the end of an adventure never to be forgotten. Contents: Seniors ...........................................................6 Underclassmen.....................................................30 Administration....................................................47 Organizations.....................................................56 Music Department..................................................73 Sports............................................................88 Homecoming........................................................98 Tournaments......................................................106 Prom.............................................................114 Graduation.......................................................126 Advertisements...................................................131 Editor s Note . . . One could write a book about his experience while working with this yearbook. At different times during the year it looked very doubtful that we would make it; everything would be going along fine until an appointment was missed or someone would lock the door to the yearbook room and lose the key. Often it seemed as if we could not possibly meet the deadlines, but at the last minute everybody would work together until the crisis was passed successfully. Although, while working together we had the usual amount of ups and downs, we had equal number of laughs and good times. The many evening sessions that we worked brought a wonder- ful crew to the Re-Echo Office ... a group that I will not forget, and one that even made work enjoyable. It is not possible to mention all of their names, but I would like to thank the staff members for all their hard work. This page would not be complete without me saying something about our advisor, Mrs. Mar- gery Williams. Her confident words and threats always boosted the morale of a fretting editor.” Not only did she advise on the publication, but she also worked many hours at proofreading and copy-writing. She would meet with us at any time or place. I am very grateful for the help which she gave during the year. Now, after all the late hours, the disappointing plans and the hundred and fifty-two pages of this book are finished, I want to look ahead and say Good luck” to next year’s staff. May they enjoy working on the 1974 book as much as we have enjoyed working on this, the 1973 Re-Echo. Jerry Latta EDITOR B. Gough D. Harman C. Weaver S. Donham E. Hcfferin B. Hinkins S. Barton D. One can readily see the time and effort she puts into all her activities. Most know her as an easy- going girl, who can be trusted to fulfill her obligations. A determined and diligent scholar rightfully earns his place as Salutatorian. Being extremely versatile. Ken spends much time with extra-curricular activites as well as with studies. It is generally agreed that he will find a full and successful life before him. RICKY RANDALL REESE If being unique has its advantages, it has surely- helped Rick in capturing third place. He is nei- ther quiet nor boisterous, shy nor aggressive, but always gets his point across. TARA NADINE TAYLOR Scholar number four’s best asset is leadership. Tara has set the pace in many organizations dur- ing her four very active years at G.H.S. Always willing to help, she has become known as one who sees things through and gets things done. JOYCE ANN WARDER When work needs to be done, one can count on Joyce to carry more than her share of the load. She is responsible and takes pride in doing her best. This quality has secured her rank as honor student number five. 21 FRANK HUMPHREY II PATRICIA ANN FAIRLEY NANCY ANN FOLEY More or less a fun” person, Duke still finds time between all of his activities to study. He is probably well remembered by classmates for his argumentative nature — perhaps this has helped him win sixth place. Patty is known by her teachers and friends as an efficient worker in both college and business courses. This trait most definitely has helped her to earn seventh place. Enthusiasm is Nancy’s trademark. She is always full of life and adds much excitement to her many activities. One of her outstanding qualities is her willingness to help. Eighth place couldn’t go to a more deserving person. SHARON LEE WESTERMAN KARL WILLIAM FREEZE KENNETH LEE CROSS Ask most anyone in class about Sharon, and he will tell you that she’s a lady. Although basically a quiet person, she has that quality of warmth which makes her pleasant to be with. She holds ninth place. A nice all-around guy who is always willing to do what is asked of him. Being the outstanding student he is. Karl graduated tenth in his class. We are sure he will be successful in his later This is one football player who has both brawn and brains, as shown by his eleventh place rank. Behind his joking manner is a guy who is always lending a helping hand. years. BEVERLY KAY ROLLINS JUDITH ANN SINSEL SHIRLEY LEE TUCKER Bcv has lots of friends — probably because she always has a kind word and vibrant smile for them. She will well be remembered for her versa- tility and charm. Congratulations on taking twelfth place. Who says number 13 isn’t lucky? It is for Judy. When others arc disorganized, Judy manages to maintain a cool and collective attitude She is persistent and faithful in her duties, and this has paid off in honors. Quiet and well mannered. Shirley has been an ideal girl to have in class. She is hard working, and always strives to do her best. She is honor student number 14. DAVID LEE JACO KARL JOHN SPINO Dave is one of those few people who fits easily into almost any setting. He is well thought of by students and teachers alike. His most striking attitude is his gentlemanly nature, which is quite admirable for this fifteenth placed student. Perhaps the best word to describe John is unas- suming. He is one who goes quietly about his duties, but will also voice his opinion on matters he feels strongly about. He rounds up the Top 10%, being number sixteen. —A— AUSTIN, SHELIA ROBIN — Robin”, Homecoming Princess 1, FBLA 1, 2, 3, 4, Pres. 4, Student Council 1, 2, 3, Keyettes 2, 3, FHA 1, Prom Princess 3, NHS 4, Mixed Cho- rus 1, 3, Teacher’s Aide 4, Class Officer 1, 3, Tournament Cheerleader 1, 2,4. —B— BAKER, DAVID LUTHER — FFA 1, 2, VICA 3,4. Degree at Fairmont State College. Upon graduation she worked as a dietician for three years for the Federal Government and then started her teach- ing career in Barbour County. Miss Cole has taught a total of thirty-three years with two years in Barbour County and thirty-one in Taylor County. She has really enjoyed her teach- ing at Grafton High, but the one thing she will miss is visiting and talking with the teach- ers and students. Miss Cole’s hobbies arc: reading, sewing, cooking, nature walks, photogra- phy, and visiting with people. Upon retirement, she is going to stop scheduling because she has had schedules since she was a freshman in high school. Her future plans include, throwing away the alarm clock and just loafing.” Miss Cole will be remembered in years to come as one of the finest and most dedicated teachers GHS has seen. Besides her superb ability to teach, Miss Cole has shown interest in the students of GHS in more than one way. The students of Grafton High School would like to say thank-you and wish her well in the years to come. HAZEL COLE Teacher Of The Year Miss Betty May Knotts graduated from Grafton Senior High School with the class of 1964. Upon graduation she enrolled in Fairmont State College in the education curriculum. In 1968 she graduated from Fairmont State with a B.A. Degree in English and Business Education. After completing six more hours she will hold a Master’s Degree in English Education from WVU. When she completes her Master’s she hopes to acquire a teaching position at the college level. Miss Knotts has taught in the Taylor County School System for five years. She taught eighth grade English at the Junior High and then came to the High School where she taught Sophomore English, Senior English, and General Business. Miss Knotts taught the Class of 73 as eighth graders, then as Sophomores, and finally as Seniors. Her comment on teaching the same students three times was, It certainly was a unique experience and it gave me great satisfaction to watch their maturity progress from eighth graders to graduat- ing seniors.” However, having to put up with the Class of 73 for three years has probably been the cause of her hair turning gray. While teaching at Grafton High she has been the Keyette sponsor and also very active in student affairs. She has helped with many of the Student Council activities and dances. Around the school she is known for her creaking knees, cracking ankles, and never being seen without an armload of jangly bracelets. She enjoys swimming, cooking, and outdoor sports. Her pet peeves are letting students grade papers in class, having to repeat an answer more than twice, and not having enough paper to live up to her name as Miss Purple Sheet.” BETTY KNOTTS 47 WILLIAM GOODWIN Curriculum Coordinator CHARLES BENNETT JR. Their hard work paid off when they received Honorable Mention for the Single Service Project in the state. This is the first award ever to be won by a Grafton High Keyette Club. The Single Service Project involves many activities. Each year at the State Convention a project is selected to be worked by all clubs. This year pollution was selected. At the beginning of the year the club rode bicycles up Riverside Drive. In the latter part they made posters concerning pollution, gave car littcrbags to the faculty, aided the Student Council with the 30th May Clean-up, and finally placed trash barrels on Yates Avenue. Along with the Key Club there was another State project — Big Brother, Big Sister. The clubs, working with the Welfare Department, held a Christmas Party for underprivileged children. The affair was held in the GHS cafeteria with a visit from St. Nick (Ken Cross) the highlight of the children’s evening. Other activities included decorating the Christmas Tree, playing games, and telling the Christmas Story. Some of the girls are now going to individual houses to work with the younger children. The Keyettes also perform several service aaivities. In the past year they passed out Memorial Day programs, sponsored Twerp Day for both the Football and Basketball Players, held a recognition night for the parents of the Basketball players, and wrapped shoe boxes for Christmas next year. The club, also for the first time, had the honor of a member being elected to a state office. Carla Sansbury at 72’s convention was selected to fulfill the office of State Secretary. Tara Taylor was chosen to represent our region in the state. A state meeting was held at GHS in March in preparation of the convention. At that time the Grafton Keyette pledge sign was adopted by all clubs. Library Assistants Row 1 — L. Haller, C. McVicker, T. Shartz, L. Leach, Mr. Walls. Row 2 — Mrs. Haddix, H. Hoover, N. While in New York, the students and staff visited many of the famous landmarks and attended the Broadway Show, A Little Night Music.” Great things come to those who work hard,” so onward and upward goes the GHS Concert Choir. Variety Show The performing abilities of Grafton High School’s student body were well presented in the second annual Variety Show, April 19- Proceeds went to help our hos- pitalized Student Body President, Donald Craft. The entire show was planned and executed perfectly. These are but a few of the scenes, but we feel that they accu- rately tell the story. Our compliments go to not only Eric Randall and Pam Stevens but also all those involved in both organization and performance. Bearcat Drum Major — R. Leonard. Majorettes — T Wiseman, B. Hinkins. Past rivalries were forgotten, as the players merged together to become Bearcats and work for the first time as a team. Their vacations ended early just so they could go out in the summer heat and begin practice for the oncoming season. The Bearcats had a very good record, 6-3-1. In every game regardless of when or where, Coach Davis’ Bearcats always did their best. A. Upton, R. Kittle, G. Davis, D. Swisher. The varsity, coached by R. Kittle, produced a record of 7- 13. R. Bord shows determination in trying for an open shot! Against tough competition the Bearcats stood up well. They tackeled all area schools and let them know they were the Bearcats. In tournament action, the Bearcats played extremely well, but were defeated by Victory in the first game. The '72 Bearcats boasted a skillful, well-rounded team. J. Satterfield, S. Lambert, C. Foley, L. Haines, T. Shay, and R. Bord are all seniors who performed well and with the entire school behind them had a successful season. S. Lambert goes up for two! C. Foley T. Shay L. Moran, the varsity squad drew close and dedicated their time and hard work in the building of enthusiasm of the entire student body of Graf- ton High School for the oncoming season. The morale of the students was kept very high during both hard and easy times by all cheerleaders and the mascot, N. Foley. All cheerleaders were fine examples of leadership and enthusiasm. The spirit stick won at cheerleading camp was only one example of the spirt the cheerleaders carried with them throughout the year. K. Moats D. Pappy” has been Athletic Director for four years, and since that time, our sports facilities have greatly improved. Under his guidance, GHS has added many valuable tools needed to produce strong, winning teams. A new gym floor was put in, and new lights were put up to add to the appearance of the gymnasium. A weight machine was also purchased for the weight room. All of these advancements were made possi- ble through Mr. Spadafore’s efforts. He knows much about his job, and is congratu- lated for doing it well. Mr. L. Spadafore R. Kittle — Head Basketball Coach G. Davis — Head Football Coach G.H.S. Coaches All four of these coaches deserve a great deal of appreca- tion from all the faculty and students of Grafton High School. The time and hard work donated by these men is not a task every man would like to have. Dedication is a word they live by and sometimes goes unnoticed. G.H.S. students have noticed it and appreciate it and would like to say thank you! D. Swisher — Head Jr.V. Basketball Coach A. Come rain or shine was homecoming week and all loyal Grafton fans came to sit under dripping umbrellas and watch our boys win the game. The sun’s bright rays were behind black clouds and there wasn’t enough light for the camera shaft That’s why you’re reading this dumb poem Instead of looking at a photograph. 98 Row 1 — V. Wolfe. K. Her cheerful smile and sunny personality brought a ray of sunshine into those gloomy, rain-filled days. Even though the rain poured during the Homecoming Game on Fri- day evening, Janet and her Court appeared on the field at half-time to be crowned by last year’s Queen, Marilyn Wolfe. 99 Homecoming The Homecoming Game was played on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. Our opponents were the Lewis County Minutemen. The game, played on a rain soaked field, proved to be a real contest with the Bearcats winning six to nothing. Even though it had rained, there was a large, enthusiastic crowd to lead the team to victory. The Queen and her court were presented at half time. On Saturday night the Dance was held in the school Gymnasium. The music was provided by the Atlantis.” The Dance was spon- sored by the student council, was decorated in keeping with the Hal- loween Season. 100 v Activities 101 Miss Sweetheart v72-v73 When the Student Council proposed the idea of a formal Sweetheart Dance, all the students were enthused. They worked diligently to make the dance the supreme accomplishment in the history of GHS. The stirring music was furnished by the well known rock ensemble, Porte Authority.” The evening was highlighted by the crowning of Miss Sweetheart,” Marlene Haller, escorted by Dave Baughman. The exquisite gowns of the lovely young ladies were admired by chaperones and students alike. Everyone was delighted and was sure a new annual event had begun. The field of candidates was large and enthusiastic, campaigning very hard for weeks before the final day, when they would make their speeches to the student body. Finally, when the votes were counted, Daniel Wolfe was elected President. After run-off for Vice-President it was announced Tom Sturm would hold that office. The candidates for Pres, included Ed Bennett, Guy Ward, Suzanne Shay, and Danny Wolfe. Those running for Vicc-Pres. were Becky Defenbaugh, Pam Stevens, and Tom Sturm. Know Your State Government Day Know Your State Government Day was held in Charleston, W.Va. this past February. Linda Keener and Sanford Barton were Grafton High’s representatives. They took pan in various sessions that dealt with state government and heard an address from a member of Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr.’s cabinet. Boys' And Girls' State Girls’ State was held the second week of June at Jackson’s Mill for the students selected by their school to learn more about their city, county, and state governments. This year Nancy Foley represented GHS at W. Va. Girls’ State. Three boys represented our school at Boys’ State this year during the third week of June. Frank Humphrey, Dave Jaco, and Rick Reese were the boys attending the week at Jackson’s Mill from the Grafton area. They learned many things about the way their government works. 104 Autographs 105 1973 Class Tournaments First Place Decorations — Seniors Second Place Decorations — Sophomores The 1973 Class Tournaments were held in April with each class participating with great enthusiasm.
