Mr. Francis Julian, welding instructor at Grafton High School will retire in July after 33 years of teaching, the last 27 years being here at Grafton. Before coming here, Mr. Julian had taught at Parkersburgh High and was Chief Instructor at the U.S. Naval Yard in Wilmington, Delaware. In all, he has been in the welding field for 48 years. Mr. Julian has been responsible for many achievements in the area. He helped open the vocational education program at the old Central School. Also, Julian and his welding classes are credited with making the football field fencing, lights, bleachers, pressbox, goalposts, and the basketball banking boards. Future plans include moving to Florida for some well-deserved rest and change in climate. He says he will miss faculty and students, but will be left with many fond memories. A dedicated Bandmaster has decided to end his career this June. Mr. Joseph Henry, director of the G.H.S. Band for 17 years will surely find it hard to part with his baton. His leadership and patience have led the Bearcat Band to many superior ratings in parades and festivals. Mr. Henry studied at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Liege, Belgium for two years. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from W.V.U. in 1947, and his Master of Music from Syracuse University in 1948. His plans for retirement include travel and reading, as well as the usual rest and relaxation. However, after a lifetime devoted to the study and teaching of music, it will remain his major source of interest and pleasure. When asked his opinion on most matters, Mr. Henry’s reply is usually fair to middlin.’’ A small but jubilant figure common to the halls of G.H.S. will not be seen this coming fall. She has made the decision to retire from the teaching profession after 15V years of service. Mrs. Carrie Packman, English teacher here for 13Mt years will instead devote much of her time refinishing antique furniture, gardening, and traveling. She is married to John W. Packman, a retired Construction Engineer with the B O Railroad. They have 1 daughter. Guy Linda, who is a speech pathologist. She tells us that she’ll never have enough time to do all the things she has planned, but we are sure that she will make every effort to do so. Asked about her feelings toward leaving, she replies, I'll miss the kids. Mrs. Elma Stout Robinson, English teacher at Grafton High, will retire in June following thirty-two years of service, the last nineteen at Grafton High School. Formerly, she taught at Shinnston, Lost Creek, Clarksburg Victory, and St. Albans. She says the years at Grafton have been the most satisfying. Her ambition after retirement? Rest and relax! Also, she would like to resume her interest in duplicate bridge, TV sports, and to spend more time with her new grand-son. In jest she says she will submit an application to the Army for a Combat medal; she thinks her experience in the teaching field qualifies her for it! Mrs. Robinson will retire, but she assures us that she will not lose interest in Grafton High School. 13
