I won’t listen to one excuse! Mr. Francis Julian, welding instructor at Grafton High School will retire in July after 33 years of teaching, the last 27 years being here at Grafton. Before coming here, Mr. Julian had taught at Parkersburgh High and was Chief Instructor at the U.S. Naval Yard in Wilmington, Delaware. In all, he has been in the welding field for 48 years. Mr. Julian has been responsible for many achievements in the area. He helped open the vocational education program at the old Central School. Also, Julian and his welding classes are credited with making the football field fencing, lights, bleachers, pressbox, goalposts, and the basketball banking boards. Future plans include moving to Florida for some well-deserved rest and change in climate. He says he will miss faculty and students, but will be left with many fond memories. A dedicated Bandmaster has decided to end his career this June. Mr. Joseph Henry, director of the G.H.S. Band for 17 years will surely find it hard to part with his baton. His leadership and patience have led the Bearcat Band to many superior ratings in parades and festivals. Mr. Henry studied at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Liege, Belgium for two years. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from W.V.U. in 1947, and his Master of Music from Syracuse University in 1948. His plans for retirement include travel and reading, as well as the usual rest and relaxation. However, after a lifetime devoted to the study and teaching of music, it will remain his major source of interest and pleasure. When asked his opinion on most matters, Mr. Henry’s reply is usually fair to middlin.’’ A small but jubilant figure common to the halls of G.H.S. will not be seen this coming fall. She has made the decision to retire from the teaching profession after 15V years of service. Mrs. Carrie Packman, English teacher here for 13Mt years will instead devote much of her time refinishing antique furniture, gardening, and traveling. She is married to John W. Packman, a retired Construction Engineer with the B O Railroad. They have 1 daughter. Guy Linda, who is a speech pathologist. She tells us that she’ll never have enough time to do all the things she has planned, but we are sure that she will make every effort to do so. Asked about her feelings toward leaving, she replies, I'll miss the kids. Mrs. Elma Stout Robinson, English teacher at Grafton High, will retire in June following thirty-two years of service, the last nineteen at Grafton High School. Formerly, she taught at Shinnston, Lost Creek, Clarksburg Victory, and St. Albans. She says the years at Grafton have been the most satisfying. Her ambition after retirement? Rest and relax! Also, she would like to resume her interest in duplicate bridge, TV sports, and to spend more time with her new grand-son. In jest she says she will submit an application to the Army for a Combat medal; she thinks her experience in the teaching field qualifies her for it! Mrs. Robinson will retire, but she assures us that she will not lose interest in Grafton High School. 13 14 Eric Andrews Ronald Andrews Virginia Austin Gary Baker Patty Barthelemy Paula Bartlett Mark Baughman Pam Bennett Sharle Bennett Joyce Boggs Joyce Boylen Mark Bradley Martha Bradley Albert Brake Robert Brown Rocky Brown Elissa Canfield Don Carpenter Sharon Clerkins Chuck Cooper Cynthia Core Carol Daff Danna Dale Della Dalton Leona Dalton Richard Davies Roger Dean Lese Delaney Bob Donaldson Danny Donham Tom Dougherty Linda Elsey Robert Exline Susan Findley Kay Flohr Donna Fortney Diana Freeze Doug Gainer Marvin Gelhausen Carl George Diana Gerard Cathy Goff John Grab Paul Grow Don Haddix Lynn Hardman Dave Hussion Kathy Hussion Netlie Jackson Debbie Jennings Steve Jennings Dave Johnson Mike Jones Rick Jones Debbie Keener Sandy Keener Anna Kennedy Rich Kerns Kay Kines Bea Kirk Patty Hcfferin Timmy Heldreth Brenda Henderson Jerry Henderson Mike Henderson Carol Hovattcr 15 16 Bev Kirk Mike Knight Donna J. This year they had the seniors doing everything from riding little wagons to carrying people on stretchers. The sen- iors were very cooperative and though they didn t showr it they en- joyed every minute of Senior Slave Day. 49 AUSTIN, TERRY ALLEN. Track 2, Chapter Star Farmer 3, Vice- Pres. FFA, Golf. With height and experience as our lia- bilities and hard work from a truly tal- ented team our asset, the 71-72 Basket- ball Squad had its ups and downs in a very exciting season. Awarded with a number of wins plagued with dropping a few close ones, our Bearcats always were producing 100% effort — which paid off in the end with a surprise upset for W.I. in the sec- tional. Though not reflected in this season’s scoreboard, the dedica- tion of this hard-working group of young men was evident in attitude and interest they displayed, in their games. Not encouraged by a sobering 0-10 record, the Bearcats are looking forward to next year’s schedule confidently as the only way to go is up. With a lot of experienced players returning, the aspirations of the team seem unlimited. The 1971-72 school year has been fairly active for the Grafton High School Key Club. First we aided our sponsoring Kiwanis Club to park cars at the home football games, and also served as legmen” for the Kiwanis light bulb sale. Later in the year we collected with the Keyettes for the Save the Children Federation, and cullet glass for the Taylor County Public Library. For money making projects we sold baked goods and Rex Cleaner, and sponsored a car wash. Social Life included a Christmas Party with the Keyettes and a trip to Huntington to the State Convention. On the athletic scene we participated in the Key Club basketball and placed 2nd in the regional Tournament. The Key Club would like to thank Mr. Neri for his cooperation with us and Mr. Watkins for taking us to the convention. The first Key Club was sponsored in May, 1925, in the Sacramento, Calif., high school by the Kiwanis club of that city. Originally its function was to carry an active vocational guidance program directly to the whole student body on a year-round basis. As it developed this work, many other opportunities for service on the school level were noted and expanded. Today the Key Club is, in fact, the service club of the high school. No job is too large or too small for it to tackle; it thrives on active work and service for others. 99 Candy Stripers J. Hoover, D. Stalnaker, J. Steadman, P. Fairley, D. Kirkpatrick, D. Farance. National Honor Society One of the most honored organizations to be made a member of is the National Honor Society. The mem- bers are chosen on the basis of four characteristics — leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Under the presiding hand of Joe Genette, and Mrs. Betty Mor- rison, the club has given aid to the school and commu- nity. To raise money for their projects, they had a bake sale during school lunch periods once each month. Among the various projects were painting the shower room, serving as ushers for Senior Graduation, and serving at a banquet for the Curtain Fund. The mem- bers also made favors for various holiday events for the City Hospital. In March, 28 new members were in- ducted. Officers for next year are R. Reese (Pres.); T. Taylor (V.-Pres.); D. Jaco (Sec.); and N. Foley (Treas.). SENIOR MEMBERS: J. Taylor. P. Weaver. M. Sandy. W. Shaffer. K. Manley. J. Genette (Pres.). B. Watkins (Treas.). C. Henderson. M. Wolfe (Sec.), L. Smith (V.-Pres.). 101 May 18, student election day, brought the election of two G.H.S. Juniors to the student body offices of president and vice-president for the school year 1972-73. Out-going vice-president Ken Mick was stopped in his try to succeed to the president’s position by Don Craft. Jim Morgan defeated a field of four candidates for the vice-presidency. These were Suzanne Shay, LuAnn Woodyard, Rick R ;ese, and Tom Sturm. All are looking for- ward to an exciting and prosperous year under this new leadership. Know Your State Government Day G.H.S. was represented in Charleston February 28 for the 22nd an- nual Know Your State Government Day by two Junior Honor Stu- dents, Sharon Lee Westerman and Kenneth Alan Mick. They took part in the various activities and heard an address from Governor Arch Moore. Sharon Westerman. Ken Mick Boys' State Girls' State Selected to participate in the annual Boys’ and Girls’ Stale Camps for the summer of 1971 were Lisa Smith, Dave Bartlett and Scott Bruner. This takes place in Lewis County’s Jackson’s Mill and is a model of the actual state government. The representatives to the Camp select their own government and run it similar to the real thing. Lisa Smith was chosen one of thirteen outstanding citizens at Girls’ State. She was given this honor by first being chosen by her cottage to compete and was then elected by the camp staff after an impromptu speech. Scott Bruner. Lisa Smith, Dave Bartlett. 103 A. Saucer Custodian Myriam Jonckheere Three years ago I met Americans for the first time. I thought they were great people and since that time I have wanted to visit America. My parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pierre Jonckheere thought this feeling would pass, but they soon had to realize that I was serious about it. So, last year I applied to the Rotary Club of my hometown, Antwer- pen. An interview followed and I was accepted. August 14 was the big day. That day, a nine-hour flight brought me from Brussels, the capi- tol of Belgium, to New York. Once there, 1 took another plane to Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, the Moats family was waiting for me. Now 1 live with the Toothman family. Both my families are really great and I love them very much. My stay in Grafton has been just beautiful. Grafton is a wonderful little town with very friendly people. In G.H.S. 1 have had wonderful times because everyone was so nice, accepted me, and did so many things for me. When I came here for the first time I was scared to death. But that feeling soon went away and now I have some of the greatest life-long friends a person could have. I want to thank my Class of 1972 for the radio-clock, the charm bracelet, and the charms they gave me on Commencement evening. I appreciate them very much. It was certainly a big surprise for me. Thank you again. Class of ’72. I love you. Thank you, also, Mr. Whitescarver, Mr. Cather, faculty members, and everyone at G.H.S. I will always remember you and all the good times I have had. I will miss you. After my sister Doris stayed for one year in America, I decided to accept the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Sell to stay in Grafton for one year. I left my hometown Leibnitz on July 30th, 1971, and flew on the same day from Vienna to New York. Already, at the beginning of my staying, I had two very exciting weeks. I toured with my American parents through New York and Washington. After these travels, I finally arrived in Graf- ton. My first impression was really great. I met several of my friends already on the first day and all the people were very friendly to me. The following week I went to G.H.S. to tell Mr. Whitescarver what classes I wanted to take. Honestly, at first I really was scared. But that feeling left me soon and when school started I did not feel strange at all. During the year, I toured a lot of West Virginia and the rest of the Eastern States. 1 really enjoyed my year very much. Last week when I received a letter that I have to leave on June 18. I was really sad. 1 will miss wonderful West Virginia, Grafton especially, G.H.S., and my new friends. At the end I want to say Thank You to my American parents, whom 1 love very much. I also want to thank Mr. Whitescarver, Mr. Cather, and Mr. Lantz who helped me in all my troubles. Also, many thanks to all my friends and the rest of the students. I surely will miss you all.
