Dedicated in solemn remembrance to a fallen member of the Class of 1970, Steven M. Drummond. in Many times during our carefree years at Grafton High, we forget about or ignore the fact that life is, in reality, very cruel and many times, hard to accept. This year, however, we were abruptly awakened to these facts by the tragic death of our friend and classmate, Steve Drummond. All of us have a recollection of the horrible day when we stood bewildered, unbelieving, one thought resounding through our heads — Steve's gone. No, it can't be true. It's just a bad dream. Ignore it and it'll go away. But it doesn't go away, and suddenly, with full fury the truth hits us — he's gone . . . forever. Gone Forever is the saddest phrase man knows. The pain now seems unbearable as we see Steve being taken to his final resting place. As the shock wears off and the pain subsides, we are left with nothing but the memories which we shall now cherish for the rest of our lives. It is a fitting tribute to Steve that he did leave us much more than memories. He left us a lesson that we had to learn the hard way. He left us the knowledge that life is unpredictably short and that we must accomplish our missions today for there may be no tomorrow. Let us never forget. HOW CRUEL THE SEA Watching the tide creep closer inch by inch, I perceive there will be no way out. The sand packed tightly against my body gives it warmth, and yet I struggle to free myself of bond. For eight long, terrifyingly long hours, having cried and screamed until my head throbbed so badly I thought it would split. I remained silent for a while. But what is this, a yacht? Help! Help! For the sake of God, Help! They're turning. Yes, I can see a figure at the helm. But what is this? The sea has come to take me. Inch by inch she has come, and now she is choking, strangling, and burning the life-giving air from my body. — by Steven Drummond 23
