Their help and care will aid us many times as we wander up the long, winding road of life. Some will be retiring this year, but memories of them will linger in the halls of G.H.S. forever; they were such a large part of the life of our school. This year ends Mrs. Bolyard's thirty-fourth successful teaching year at Grafton High School. Mrs. Bolyard is a native of Harrison County. She was born near Wallace, West Virginia on November 11, 1903, daughter of Elwood and Molly Wilson Cook. After graduating from Lumberport High School, Mrs. Bolyard entered Fairmont State College, where she received her A.B. degree in English and Home Economics. She obtained her M.A. degree at West Virginia University. Other colleges she attended were Duke University, Columbia University, and West Virginia Tech. Before coming to Grafton High School, she taught at Daybrook High School. She then attended Columbia University and later worked at St. Giles Convalescent Home for Crippled Children for a short time. Afterwards she resumed teaching at Wallace High School and Davis High School. She began teaching at Grafton High School in the fall of 1936 as a Home Economics teacher. She has been advisor for the Future Homemakers Club since she first came to G.H.S. Her other activities include Business Girls Club and Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She attends Fetterman Methodist Church. She is a member of the American FHome Economics Association, the American Vocational Association, and the Hecalums. Mrs. Bolyard has proven herself a leader in the numerous organizations to which she belongs. She is a former state president and treasurer of the West Virginia Vocational Association. She was also the treasurer for the West Virginia Home Economics Association for several years. Mrs. Bolyard rarely gets angry, but is quite dissatisfied when an assigned project is not turned in on time. Her most common remarks are Let's be a little quieter, girls. and Girls! Get to work! Mrs. Bolyard enjoys sewing, knitting, swimming, traveling, and craftmaking. She fears snakes and high places. In her retirement she wants to become a homemaker for the first time in her life. In addition, she hopes to travel. Thomas Bolyard, son of John R. and Sarah J. Bolyard was born in Barbour County on January 3, 1905. He received his education from Broaddus Academy, Philippi W. Va. He attends the Fetterman Methodist Church. Mr. Bolyard has many hobbies, two of which are teaching and growing flowers. His plans for the future aren't definite, but he would like to visit friends and relatives and travel to the far corners of the world. He can often be heard saying in class, Listen and try and you won't have any difficulty. Mr. Bolyard likes students who obey regulations in class. 14 Randall McKinney was born on August 9,1905 in Burnsville W. Va. He graduated from Burnsville High School. He attended Glenville Normal School in 1923 and 1924 and represented them in baseball and basketball. He played forward on the varsity basketball team for four years, served as captain in 1927, and was high scorer in 1928. He also played varsity football for four years as an end and halfback. He received honorable mention as an All-Eastern End in 1928. He played varsity baseball for two years. Mr. McKinney has taught physical education, biology, civics, sociology and economics at Grafton High School, and has brightened many of the classes with his personal experiences and stories. Mr. McKinney, a hardworker and a sport enthusiast, served as head coach for football and basketball for thirty-five years; and for the past five years, he has served as Athletic Director. He left Grafton High for a time when he enlisted in the Navy in July, 1942. He entered as a Lieutenant j.g. and left the service in November, 1945, as a Lieutenant. Her most common remark to her students is Think clearly. Miss Mumford is noted for her vocabulary tests and her abundant knowledge of all types of literature. Upon leaving Grafton High School, Miss Mumford plans to travel and to pursue her particular interest in education. 15 SENIORS TAKE YOUR PLACE Somewhere the world has a place for you That is all your own; Somewhere is work that your hand can do, And yours alone. Whether afar over land and sea Or close at your door may the duty be. It calls for your service full and free! Take your place! Somewhere the world has bitter tears Your smile might dry; Somewhere the burden of doubts and fears. The hopeless sigh. There are steps that falter, weary, weak. For the strong, brave aim they vainly seek — Will you pass them by on the journey bleak? Take your place! Somewhere the world has a desert spot Your toil might till; Somewhere a life whose loveless lot Your love might fill. If the place that waits be high or low. Question not, cry not — onward go! The world's great battle needs every blow — Take you place! HONOR STUDENTS VALEDICTORIAN Our valedictorian for 1970 is Beverly Smith. Beverly is a poised, quiet young lady. Being a good student involves use of imagination.’ Beverly's abilities in this direction are apparent in her excellent compositions. SALUTATORIAN BEVERLY SMITH Patty Brown is our salutatorian. That Pat is a scholar may be ascertained from her class standing; her sweet personality is evidenced by her quiet smile. 18 PATTY BROWN DIANE GALLAHER Innocent looks, a twinkling eye, and a cooperative manner characterize Diane Gallaher, who stands third in her class. She is an excellent student with a sparkling personality; we can all say, she's dependable, and she's fun. SHIRLEY HENDERSON Let's have a cheer for our next scholar. A cheerleader + a scholar - Shirley Henderson, a well-rounded student. MARIE SHACKELFORD ALAN MOATS The chief activity of our fifth honor student, Marie Shackelford, has been the Keyette Club, in which she has proven herself a valuable asset. A wide, slow grin, a twinkling eye, a quick mind — put then all together and you'll have Alan Moats, 19 honor student number six. Until he was sidelined by a knee injury, Alan also quarterbacked the Bearcats. He found time for many activities. KATHY BOLINER Quiet, polite, and considerate of others are the adjectives which best describe our seventh honor student, Kathy Boliner. She will be sadly missed at G.H.S. JAMES RENEAU Jim has worked long and hard throughout his four years at G.H.S. to rank ninth in the class of '70. He presently holds the responsible position of lifeguard at the Tygart Lake State Park. BRUCE MILLER Eighth on our honors list is Bruce Miller. Despite his shy and easy-going personality, Bruce takes an especially active part in all his social studies classes. HOWARD STANSBERRY Our tenth honor student is Howard Stansberry. In addition to his widely acclaimed intellectual abilities, Howard has proven himself a valuable asset to the G.H.S. track team. roger McDaniel Even though Roger may be looked upon as somewhat of a wolf, he seems to have found ample time for study. Roger ranks eleventh on our honors list. PAULA DEFENBAUGH Paula, our twelfth honor student, is known as the girl behind the star basketball player of G.H.S. Paula is well-known for her long, black hair and radiant smile. DOUGLAS FAWCETT ALICE FISHER Honor student number thirteen, Doug Fawcett, is Vibrance is Alice Fisher who snares thirteenth place, probably G.H.S.'s busiest student. Aside from his Her enjhusiasm is reflected in everything in which academic work, Doug has found time for sports, 21 s e takes a part, playing in the band, and doing an excellent job as student body president. kay McCartney REGINA MARTIN Kay is one of the light-hearted and carefree few who always seems to wear a smile. She ranks fifteenth on our honors list. Our sixteenth honor student is Regina Martin, a real go-getter. She will be sadly missed by members of the Athletic Ticket Committee. BRADY MILLER CAROL FOX Honor student number seventeen is Brady Miller. Despite plane geometry and physics, Brady will take his place proudly in the class of 1970. 22 Creativity is a noticeable trait of our class artist, Carol Fox. Carol ranks eighteenth on our honors list. Dedicated in solemn remembrance to a fallen member of the Class of 1970, Steven M. Drummond. in Many times during our carefree years at Grafton High, we forget about or ignore the fact that life is, in reality, very cruel and many times, hard to accept. This year, however, we were abruptly awakened to these facts by the tragic death of our friend and classmate, Steve Drummond. All of us have a recollection of the horrible day when we stood bewildered, unbelieving, one thought resounding through our heads — Steve's gone. No, it can't be true. It's just a bad dream. Ignore it and it'll go away. But it doesn't go away, and suddenly, with full fury the truth hits us — he's gone . . . forever. Gone Forever is the saddest phrase man knows. The pain now seems unbearable as we see Steve being taken to his final resting place. As the shock wears off and the pain subsides, we are left with nothing but the memories which we shall now cherish for the rest of our lives. It is a fitting tribute to Steve that he did leave us much more than memories. He left us a lesson that we had to learn the hard way. He left us the knowledge that life is unpredictably short and that we must accomplish our missions today for there may be no tomorrow. Let us never forget. HOW CRUEL THE SEA Watching the tide creep closer inch by inch, I perceive there will be no way out. The sand packed tightly against my body gives it warmth, and yet I struggle to free myself of bond. For eight long, terrifyingly long hours, having cried and screamed until my head throbbed so badly I thought it would split. I remained silent for a while. But what is this, a yacht? Help! Help! For the sake of God, Help! They're turning. Yes, I can see a figure at the helm. But what is this? The sea has come to take me. Inch by inch she has come, and now she is choking, strangling, and burning the life-giving air from my body. — by Steven Drummond 23 Bernard Austin Barbara Baker Danny Baker Carl Boliner Katherine Boliner It didn't seem possible! The class to graduate in 1970 was ours. Announcements arrived, and the cards were exchanged fast and furiously. The keepsake gowns arrived, shiny and new. Memory books were signed and packed with souvenirs as our days at G.H.S. dwindled. With a few days left, we realized school had not been all bad; we had even matured a little in the process. Thanks to the faculty who guided us and inspired us. SENIORS 24 Sherry Butler Karen Cardwell William Carpenter 25 David Collins Bob Curry One day is set aside each year for the vengeful juniors and underclassmen; this day is Senior slave day. Complete havoc reigns on this day as the Seniors, dressed in outlandish costumes, obey the orders of the people who bought them. Whether it be shining shoes, cleaning lockers, or dancing, when a whistle is blown, the Seniors take it in stride, counting the hours until school is over for the day. Jenny Drainer Steve Edwards Barbara Fawcett Phil Faulkner Alice Fisher Sharmon Gall 27 Morris Garrett Mary Glaspell Randy Jackson Carolyn Jackson Tina Isner Sharon James Cynthia Kalo 29 Russell Kirby Virginia Linn Gary Lipscomb Raymond Knight Jeannie Litzinger Pam Lake Shirley Loudin Randy Lipscomb 30 Sally Lucas Susan Lucas Billy Lyons Brenda Malone June 3, 1970 dawned as a gloomy, rainy day, but turned into a beautiful day for the Seniors. The group took the day off and went picnicking and swimming at Tygart Lake. Despite some mishaps and the fact that certain female members of the class (A.F., D.G., S.H., B.S.) could not build their own fire to roast hot dogs, a good time was had by many students. A day to always remember, it could, have been improved by more planning. judy Powell Clifford Painter Buddy Peacock Gary Parkhill Donna Patrick Sara Patterson Pam Poling Deborah Poling Mike Peters Roberta Poling Larry Rogers Tom Royce 35 David Satterfield Robert Sciegaj William Schaefer Glen Shaffer Joe Shaffer Marie Shackelford 36 Steve Shaluta Beverly Smith Charles Shugars John Sloan Steve Shank Robert Sharp Charles Shoemaker Judy Stafford Mike Snyder Sandra Stevens Baxter Stout Debbie Stevens Rickey Stutler Vicki Stutler 39 Robert Tucker Gary Ward SENIOR DIRECTORY BAKER, BARBARA ELLEN, “Bobbie'' Art Club, FHA 4, Powderpuff 4, Barbara wills her horse-back riding ability to Margie Carr. Student Council workers prepare for the Homecoming dance. Miss Anne Catski Homecoming, the first major event of the year, is always tinged with excitement; this school year was no exception. The excitement resulted in action, and much preparation went into some of the floats. The Spanish Club deserves credit for originality and the Keyettes for enthusiasm. The climax to the parade was, of course, the traditional bonfire; it provided warmth on that crisp, autumn evening. The game, although disappointing, was hard-fought. We were proud of our team's spirit and our beautiful queen, Anne Gatski, and her court. The dance proved to be a successful ending for the three day activity. ROW 1 - P Knight, R. Austin, P. The freshmen and sophomores appeared, ready for battle and filled with determination and zeal. With the addition of two outstanding teams plus the experienced senior team and the hard-working junior team, the tournament was expanded to three evenings of frolic on the football field for the audience to enjoy. Needless to say, one of the greatest attractions of the games was the appearance of the charming and most attractive cheerleaders. In moments when there was little action on the field, the cheerleaders provided thrills by throwing water ballons, which occasionally spattered members of the audiences. After a week of initiation the new members along with the teachers were invited to a tea given by the old members. The club sold blue and gold pom poms, had three bake sales, four car washes, and sold light bulbs to raise money to carry on the years projects. The Keyettes helped the Kiwanis at their annual pancake feed , aided the Pop Warner Mothers by serving at their banquet, had a tag day for the Hemophilia Foundation, gave a Thanksgiving basket to the needy, helped with Project Astronaut, put a full-length mirror in the teachers lounge, donated $20.00 to the Pearl Buck Foundation, offered to babysit over Christmas holidays to raise money for the City Library, gave the library fund $20.00, and helped move the library books and shelves to their new location. At Christmas the Keyettes rang the bells for the Salvation Army and provided the refreshments for the Industrial Schools annual Christmas Party. The club held a Halloween Dance and a Valentine Dance, decorated four floats for Homecoming and made an arc of victory for the team. The Keyettes held a Spirit Week during basketball season. During the week we held an assembly, a poster contest, and chartered two buses to the West Fairmont game. The record room off the gym was cleaned and painted by the Keyettes. The girls attended various churches in our community once a month as a group. During the year we served at a Key Club district meeting, attended play day at East Fairmont High, two state meetings in Fairmont, one in Charleston, the annual Salvation Army recognition banquet, made the programs for convention, and attended the convention at Jacksons Mill. The Keyette officers rode the Kiwanis float in the 30th of May Parade. The Keyettes planned a Kiwanis-Key Club-Keyette Banquet, made the programs and the favors for that evening. At the banquet Keyette of the Year, Marlene Kalo; Keyette of 1st Semester, Patty Brown, Keyette of 2nd Semester, Sherry Butler, Miss Alvarez; and Mr. Neri were honored and presented gifts of appreciation. The year ended at the annual Keyette picnic. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA 1st ROW - Mrs. Decker, J Litzinger, S. Patterson, |. Thorn, P. Collins, D. Jenkins, D. Patrick, K. The Key Club of Grafton High School devoted another full year to service during the 1969-1970 school term. The organization served the community by such projects as moving the public library, collecting for the Hemophilia Foundation, and ringing the Salvation Army bell at Christmas time. When not busy with a community service project, the club was benefiting the school by washing the windows, painting the phone booth or gym, parking cars at football games or driving a homecoming float. Aside from these activities the club also sponsored car washes, play inter-club basketball, attend district meetings (hosting one), and attending church as a group monthly. CANDY STRIPERS ROW 1 W. They were constantly cleaning the halls and scrubbing the floors. - The cafeteria system improved greatly over past years. The cooks spent hours preparing our lunches everyday and the food was usually pretty decent. — Another forgotten service personnel was the bus driviers. It took a lot of patience to drive sixty un-cooperative high school kids to and from school every day. W. Saucer, A. Ford, A. Mathews, W Carder, L. Henderson. B. McVicker, M.
