Mrs. Sinsel has a friendly greeting for all students, a pleasant smile, and a personality that wins many friends. As a teacher, she brings history to life. She is one of those few teachers who know how to coax’' the work out of a student. She is noted for her surprise quizzes and hard tests. Her most common expressions are, Keep awake, boys.” and Turn to page 400, Column I”. Mrs. Sinsel likes steaks, bananas, and students who cooperate. In her spare time she enjoys reading religious and historical novels, watching TV, sewing and doing fancy work. Help us, 0 Lord As we enter the gate Show us the love and cast out the hate. Our Class we hope Will meet again. This is the beginning And not the end. Each one will go out to pursue a career, Some will make it Some will come near. So remember. 0 Lord The Class of ’69 Keep us great And keep us fine. li CAROL ROWE After the battle is won every conqueror has a right to his famous last words. As seniors we are conquerors, too, of a battle that took four years to win. Now we are ready for our famous last words. Mine may not be famous, but they will be my last as I say farewell for the great class of ’69. In our four years at Grafton High School we have shared a lot of fun, a little sorrow, and even some hard work. We have grown and matured together until we don’t even look like those scared freshmen who entered Grafton High School four years ago. Already many of our experiences are only dim memories, so let’s stop and reminisce together. Our freshman year: The first thing I remember is freshman initiation — Mike Carr in his two-piece bathing suit, and Judy Reese being chosen “Miss Freshman with the biggest ears.” Could we ever forget the class tournaments our freshman year? That jolly green giant was the sorriest thing I’ve ever seen! Our sophomore year: Remember the bug collection you made for Mr. Donham, or the way Miss Cole would fold her arms when she had something important to say. Our junior year: Remember Mrs. Sinsel’s American History tests, our first prom, and the junior Olympics decorations for the class tournaments? Our senior year: (This has been the best year.) Mrs. Packman looking at us over her glasses; the time Mr. McKinney’s commanding officer told him, “Don’t you •Very Well’ me, you big farmer’’; the musical “Bye, Bye, Birdie” and swinging Bill Parsons; Nancy Kines scrubbing the floors on Senior Slave Day. VALEDICTORIAN These are just a few of the experiences we’ve shared. Today we can almost laugh at what seemed like serious difficulties during high school. Our ordeals have become adventures we wouldn’t have missed. But why do we always wait to find our pleasure in the sad afterglow of remembering? If only we could relish life each day as we live it! If only we could learn to overlook the petty annoyances, the needless fears that obstruct our enjoyment of the moment, and recognize the true value of now before it is gone forever. Do you remember Thornton Wilder’s play “Our Town” which we read during our junior year? And how in the third act Emily Webb is permitted after her death to go back to Grover’s Corners for one day? As she relives that day she sees all the things she neglected to do and all the unnoticed little kindnesses of others. This becomes so painful that she can stand it no longer. Begging to be allowed to join the dead she cries, “I can’t. I can’t go on. Oh! Oh. It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one another. I didn’t realize. So much that was going on, and we never noticed. Take me back — up the hill — to my grave. But first — wait! One more look. Good bye, good-bye world. Good-bye, Grover’s Corners . . . Mamma and Papa. Good-bye to clocks ticking . . . and Mamma's sunflowers. And food and coffee. And new-ironed dresses and hot baths . . . and sleeping and waking up. Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it — every, every minute?” I’ve missed so much in high school. Those who will be here next year still have the chance to enjoy high school now. It’s only a bore if you make it that way. Sure you have to study, but that aoesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Years from now you’ll think, “I wish I had paid more attention in math class. I could use that knowledge now.” Teachers want students to enjoy learning, and most teachers are glad to see students take part in school activities. So start today, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, to make the most of your remaining high school years. But what about us, the seniors? In just a few days we will be graduating. High school is over for us. Ahead is a job, the service, marriage, or maybe college. But realizing the things we missed in high school can teach us a lesson. We can begin right now to find joy in every minute of life as we live it. As we say farewell I have a wish for each senior here today: May you have memories that are a pleasure to recall and may you have the wisdom to know the value of now, before it is gone forever. 12 SALUTATORIAN THE WORLD OF TOMORROW Good morning and welcome to this Awards Day Assembly. I am up here on the stage to give the salutatory address, but some of you, I’m sure, are not aware of what a salutatory is. A saluatatory is simply a welcoming speech. And today my salutatory is addressed to all of the students of the student body, but mainly to the Seniors, for I would like to welcome you to the World of Tomorrow. On the evening of June 10, 1969, you. Seniors will be stepping into the world of tomorrow. In the following years the rest of the student body will also be stepping into this new and exciting world. This world of tomorrow is made of dreams, hopes, and ambitions. And we, every student in this auditorium, have one unique advantage — we have been raised in the greatest nation on earth, the United States of America. Here in the land of plenty we have been given the unique advantages that students in other parts of the world are rejected. Here in America we can have our freedom of speech and thought and action. We can grow and develop as individuals and also as part of a huge family. Here is America we can go where we want and get the kind of job we want. Yes, our home — America! And America is a part of our World of Tomorrow. Oh yes, we all hear about the rioters and demonstrators who say America is all wrong and that it has to be changed. But I believe that America has many more good points than bad. Instead of tearing down America we should build on the many good points she has. This is what the class of 1969, I’m sure, plans to do — build up not tear down. Most of us have set our goals on the highest star and now we plan to reach that star. As I welcome you all to the world of tomorrow, I have a suggestion for you. There are two necessities to be a success in the world of tomorrow. These are having determination and having God by your side. When you have determination you can do anything, no matter how hard or how seemingly impossible. Determination is having faith that you can do something, and you all know that faith can move mountains. You need determination, no matter whether you’re a housewife, dentist, teacher, welder, machinist, lawyer, or whatever. Determination drives you forward and upward to do your very best in whatever field you choose. Besides determination you need God by your side. Perhaps some of you think that I shouldn’t mention God; that God has nothing to do with the world of tomorrow. But He does. He has everything to do with our world. PATRICIA THORN God was in space on Christmas Eve. The three astronauts could not help but know that God was there when they saw the magnificent view of space and the earth and the moon. We must be like them today. We cannot help but realize that God is here and is responsible for our world. We know this just by seeing a seed change into a tree; a bud into a beautiful flower; and embryo change into a human baby. Fantastic!! It is quite miraculous to think that we students came into this world as helpless, crying, dependent babies and today we are independent, self-reliant, ambitious human beings. It’s really fantastic how fast we have progressed. Only through God's will have we done this. I am really saddened by the fact that the United States used to be such a Christian nation and now we seem to drifting away. People must realize the connection between us being a Christian nation and also the greatest nation on earth. When I say that America is the greatest nation on earth, I’m not being prejudiced, because it's a fact. Even if I lived in another country I would still have to say that the United States is the greatest nation on earth. This has been accomplished with the help of God. With determination and God beside us we can go out into the world of tomorrow knowing that we are ready to climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow till we find our dream. Welcome to this world of tomorrow. 13 HONOR STUDENTS RANKING IN DONNA WOLFE She is one of those rare people who can charge through a busy day and come out of it looking as neat as when she started. Donna ranks third in the honor list. CATHY LOAR LINDA ROGERS The fourth honor student, is Miss Congeniality of our class. Linda is that rare combination: fragile, blonde, beauty, and intelligence, too. KAY PHILLIPS A petite young lady. Cathy, is our fifth honor student. She may be small but she can move mountains. She’s peppy and studious, a useful combination. 14 Independence and capability combine to make Kay. our sixth honor student, a scholar and a valuable friend. ORDER OF TOP TEN PERCENT OF THE CLASS DOROTHY RENEAU HERMAN PRICE Dorothy has gone quietly and efficiently through her four years at G. H. S. to earn seventh place in our honors list. There’s a twinkle in the eye of our eighth honor student. Herman Price. Perhaps the twinkle is due to Herman’s surprising store of knowledge; he's a walking information center. DIANE MATLICK Ninth on our honors list is Diane Matlick, the head Majorette of our band. Despite her busy schedule she has made excellent grades. JUDY REESE Ambition is a strong trait in the character of scholar member ten. Judy. She is organization personified: she has managed to organize us all and make good grades besides. CATHY TOTH The eleventh honor student is Cathy Toth. She was Secretary of the year for the commercial department. She is attractive and efficient, a rare combination. KEVIN WILLIAMS Twelfth place has been earned by Kevin, the class wit. Kevin has studied hard, held an after school job and teased us besides. He has really been BUSY with school work and extra curricular activities. BLAINE COMPTON Blaine is our thirteenth honor student. Here is another scholar who has found time for other activities, such as music and drama. Blaine is a sincere dedicated student. 16 TERESA ANNON Sweetness is the trait of student fourteen, Teresa Annon. She is a good student with a marvelous personality. DIANE CRAFT CHARLENE WILLIAMS Honor student number fifteen may be T V’s next “Champagne Lady.” She BUBBLES! Diane Craft is vivacious, fun to be with, and a good student, tying for fifteenth place. Happiness is Charlene Williams who shares fifteenth place. Her smile is worth a trip down the hall anyday. Shiela is a well-mannered, dedicated student who has earned her place as our sixteenth honor student. She gives her all to everything she does. 17 Janet is the participation in our class. She has found time for sports, clubs, and studies. Janet has had a busy four years. TERESA G. ANNON. - -Gail . Keyettes 4. National Honor Society 4. FTA 3. 4. Spanish Club 1. 2, 3, 4. The carefree days of fun and frolic are over. It’s time for the class of 69 to venture their different ways and discover life for themselves. No one knows what fate has in store for them. For some the future may hold happiness and fortune; for others it may hold disaster and sorrow. Miss Deborah Kay Shoemaker, daughter of Mrs. Dottie Lou Shoemaker, was one of 132 students and 28 adults to go on the fifth NASC European Tour for International Understanding. To be selected, each student not only had to be recommended by his school principal or student council advisor, but also had to submit a transcript of his grades, a list of extracurricular activities, and most important, a plan explaining how he would put the lessons of the tour to work in his local community. Nearly 4,000 miles of bus traveling were involved in this trip, during which nine countries were visited: England, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia. Austria. Germany, and the Netherlands. Another thing that made the NASC tour distinctive was that in addition to observing sights tourists usually see the NASC students enjoyed a number of social events in all areas — cultural, social, and political. When asked about the tour, she says, “It was a very rewarding experience. A dream come true! 60 Debbie Shoemaker ELECTION OF OFFICERS ’69-70 Lloyd Spring Manager — Bill Parsons FOR V-PRES. In order to be nominated for membership, a student must have at least a “B” average. The names are then given to the members of the faculty and are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The induction ceremony is held in the very early spring and is followed by a tea for the new members and their parents. Being selected as a member of the National Honor Society is the highest honor that can be conferred upon a high school student. 63 CREATIVITY AND IN PUBLICATION Sharon Sinsel BobStockett Barbie Flohr Larry Knight Rena Freeze Editor Co-Editor Mrs. Margery Williams Advisor Compiling a yearbook requires individual effort throughout the year at various tasks. Pictures, artwork, and appointments are made, layouts are planned and determined, copy is written, typed, and edited, and finally deadlines are met. In the publication of our yearbook, individuality was allowed a free reign. We tried to be progressive and imaginative. The staff of RE-ECHO ’68 is confident that it has succeeded in its efforts to make this book reflect the individuality of GRAFTON HIGH SCHOOL. The Key Club of Grafton High School had a very busy year in 1968. When not attending the numerous divisional meetings, the Kiwanis meeting every Tuesday, the State Convention, and church once a month as a group. They also kept busy by rendering their service to area churches by aiding the Salvation Army at Christmas by packing baskets and ringing the bells, aiding the school by sponsoring the Thanksgiving Dance, building the bonfire for Homecoming, cleaning the record room and auditorium, helping to set up for the Bank Boosters Dance, painting Mr. Neri’s storage room, and distributing information on the school Bond Levy, parking cars at football games and selling programs at basketball games. Despite all this work they still had time to sponsor two car washes and a car safety check, help the fireman at the Apple Festival, pass out programs and sponsor a float at the Memorial Day Parade, and sponsored a float in the Boat Parade, and play inter-divisional basketball. 72 KEYETTES The Keyettes began the year by inducting new members, after an initiation and a welcoming tea. With the addition of the new members, the thirty-one girls sold Bearcat megaphones, held a car wash, and sponsored a “tag” dance. Backed with Christmas cheer the Keyettes sent a basket of food to a needy family, held a Christmas party for several underprivileged children, and aided the Salvation Army by ringing the Christmas bell. The Keyettes collected magazines for surrounding rest homes, made slippers for the hospital, and sent cookies to the Industrial School for Boys. They also came to the aid of the Kiwanis Club by serving them at the Pancake Supper. The club passed out information concerning the bond issue and helped in the Youth Center Drive. The Keyettes held a Valentine Dance and purchased soap and mirrors for the rest rooms with the proceeds. The girls had another car wash in May, attended the State Keyette Convention at Huntington, and held a banquet honoring the Keyette of the Year, Cindy Kalo. In addition to all their activities they attended church monthly as a group. Row 1. Mr. Neri. C. Rotoe — Cor. Sec.. J. Reese - V. Pres.. B. Flohr -Tres., C. Loar — Pres., D. Reneau — Rec. Sec. Row 2. REACHING TOWARD OUR GOALS Educational programs and interesting tours were the goals set by the Future Teachers of America Chapter. During the 1968-69 school year the members have seen several films, and guest speakers who helped us with understanding the advantages and disadvantages of a teaching career. The F.T.A. members have toured two college campuses. Three of the films presented to the F.T.A. members were “A Desk for Billy”, “Mike Makes His Mark,” and “Design ’69”. The guest speakers were Mrs. Shaver and Mr. Neri. Mr. Neri, also presented the group with a film. Tours were taken at West Virginia University in Morgantown and Davis and Elkins College in Elkins. On each tour the members were shown the campuses and enjoyed a noon meal at the student centers. The annual regional meeting was held at Fairmont State College. Pam Stevens and Janine Manley represented our chapter in the Talent Show. David Knotts, the President, was given the Senior Award, on Awards Day, for doing the most outstanding work in F.T.A., based on the point system. This year’s officers were: President — David Knotts, Vice President — Shirley Hullderman, Secretary — Teresa Annon, Treasurer. Janine Manley, Parliamentarian — Debra Campbell and Historian - Sherry Butler. All the members of the local chapter helped to make 1969 a successful year. 82 FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA Row 1. SECRETARY of the YEAR Each year the Business Education Department chooses one girl to be “Secretary of the Year.” This award is made to the student who possesses those characteristics that an employer would use in selecting a secretary for his firm; namely, basic skills in typing and shorthand, attitude, initiative, dependability, resourcefulness, appearance, poise and participation in school and community affairs. This year’s award went to Cathy Toth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Toth, 210 Bishop Avenue. Cathy has maintained a B+ average throughout her four years of high school. She has achieved 63 net words with one error in typing and 120 words a minute in shorthand. Cathy took the NBET test in shorthand in April and received her National Certificate at that time. She is a Business Education major and is a July enrollee of Fairmont Business College. Cathy is a member of the National Honor Society, FBLA, A Capella Choir, Mixed Chorus, and Girls’ Glee Club. 83 THREE COINS IN A FOUNTAIN As anxious juniors and seniors prepared for their main social event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom, shopping for formals, renting dinner jackets, and ordering corsages were only a few of the many tasks that kept them busy. With the fragrance of flowers, the rustling of gowns, and the gaiety of the occasion, a dreamy atmosphere was created, appropriate for the theme so characteristic of spring, “Three Coins in a Fountain.” After entering the gaily decorated field house of Grafton High School Saturday, May 10 couples danced to the music of “The Establishments” from 8 to II p.m. At ten o’clock a tense excitement came over everyone as the sixteen candidates for queen and their escorts anxiously awaited the announcing of the lucky winner. At the awaited moment, Howard Stansberry, junior class president, introduced Miss Pamela Lake as the 1968-69 Prom Queen. Her escort, Alan Moats, led Pam to the throne where she was crowned by Howard Stansberry and was presented with a bouquet of long stemmed roses by Miss Cheyla Hulley. Pam's coronation, followed by a spotlight dance including her court, ended the almost perfect night. Hoping for more fun, many couples attended the after-prom party and various gala affairs throughout the city. President of the Grafton Elks Lodge No. 308 has awarded U.S. Savings Bonds to Dorothy Ray Reneau and Timothy Michael Hussion, seniors at Grafton High School. They were the Local Elks Leadership Contest winners, this includes both Grafton and Flemington High Schools. The Awards were given on the basis of leadership in the school, church, and community. Local winners then go to the State Contest. Dorothy is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. 0. N. Reneau of Rt. 5, Grafton. Some of her winning activities were: member of the Choir, member of the Band, member of the Band Council, and member of the Student Council. She was also a Charter member of the Keyettes of which she was Recording Secretary, Secretary of the National Honor Society, and she served a year as President and one as Secretary of the French Club. Other activities included playing Powder Puff Football, being in the School Play, being Queen of the 1969 Band Dance, serving as President of her 4-H Club, and being County Junior Leader’s Club. Timothy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Hussion of 21 West Washington St., Grafton. His activities included Lettering in Football, Basketball, and Track. I’m ready! Oh. no! Not again! BLOOD. SWEAT. AND TEARS 1968 was a rebuilding and orientation year for the Bearcats. Graduation had almost exhausted the team’s pool of experience. New Head Coach James Youngblood and Assistant Coach David Watson worked hard throughout the summer trying to give Grafton a team to be proud of. After a long hot summer of training, learning, and hard work, the untried but dedicated Bearcats were ready to defend their honor. They gave each game an inspired effort, but the odds were against us. The inexperience took its toll, the breaks were seldom ours, and several injuries hampered our efforts. Bill Miller, a senior, and Alan Moats, a junior, were lost for the season with knees injuries which put them in the University Hospital for operations. Tim Hussion received a similar injury and was on crutches for a while. Several other players were lost for a game or two, but they soon returned to the wars. At the end of the season our record stood 1-9 by defeating Morgantown High by a forfeit. Although we won only one game, the performance given by the fighting Bearcats in 1968 has given Grafton new confidence in the seasons to come. 92 Well fellows stay on your feet Slowly but surely We'll find the bottom! Raymond Shaw Bob Hussion Wally Carr Mike Carr Mickey Elsey Bob Hussion, senior forward averaging 21 points a game and the cog around which the Bearcats revolved much of the year, was named to the All-Conference Team. Hussion, who came off the Jayvee squad in mid year last season to nail down a starting berth, has been the guy who put the “go” in the Bearcats much of the time. Being named to the Honorable Mention list was junior guard Larry Rogers. Rogers, a 5'8 pepper pot, was a defensive stickout all year, scoring at a 15 point a game clip. The excitement generated by the football campaign had barely ended when the mighty Bearcats were on their way again. This time, the sport was basketball. Varsity basketball was a relatively good season but up and down. At the beginning of the year, the Cats played mediocre ball but seemed to come alive after the first half of the season. Summing up the first half, the Cats won two and lost eight games, defeating Shinnston 95-66, and B-U 80-39. In the second half of league play. Grafton won five and suffered five losses. Wrapping up the ’69 season, the fighting Bearcats defended our home plate against the Elkins Tigers. The previous game had been a loss of 64-70. Responding to the cries of the fans, the Cats sharpened their claws and defended our honor with the score of Grafton 77, Elkins 71. BASKETBALL SCORES G.H.S. OPP. It also caused Coach Youngblood to become green with envy becaused he lacked such a rough, tough, dynamic group of All-Americans. The girls fought hard and provided an exciting contest.
