Hats off to you Ever You'll find us loyal and true Firm and undaunted always we 11 be. Hail to the school we love. Here's a toast to thee. Sylvia-Sue Robb CO-EDITORS John Linn As in years gone by, the Senior class must relinquish their staff of teachers and enjoyable moments to the oncoming Senior class. We also must place in the past the glamour or the prom, the thrill of the football games, the excitement of the basketball games, and the anticipation and competition of the class tournaments. To keep our memories fresh of our good times we had at Grafton High School we would like to present the 1967 edition of the Re-Echo. We hope that all the classes enjoy reading the yearbook as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. As we look back through our edition of the Re-Echo in years to come, we will always remember all of our good times, and friendly classmates. Larry Sapp Jane Marshall Susie Kincaid Nancy Collins Gary Shafer Bob Duckworth Jane Dorton Donna Wilson RE-ECHO STAFF 5 6 DEDICATION This year our yearbook is dedicated to the servicemen who once graced the halls of G.H. S. and are now fighting in Vietnam. It is our sincere hope that never again will we have to sacrifice American men in war. With God's blessing there will someday be peace. 9 SITTING: P. Dean, B. The Key Club of Grafton High School has been very active during this year. They have been striving for the betterment of our school by working throughout the community as well as the school. The members have worked with their advisor and other teachers to accomplish such things as maintaining student government to working on the playgrounds around the area. We are very grateful for their help and are looking forward to their assistance 'in future years. The Keyette Club is one of the newly organized clubs of G. H. S. It is patterned after the Kiwanis Club. The officers for the year were: President—Judy Weaver; Vice President--Penny Peters; Secretary— Sebbie Gall; Treasurer—Debbi Weekley. A Board of Directors was chosen consisting of: Senior class— Barbara Lewis; Junior class--Susie Kincaid; Sophomore class—Carol Rowe, and the officers. At Christmas the club presented a needy family with a basket of food. Waste baskets were made and distributed and two of the main projects were collecting glass frames for the needy and completing a charter. KEYETTE CLUB- ROW 1: D. Weekley, P. Peters, J. Weaver, S. FOOTBALL 66-67 The Grafton Bearcats after several weeks of hard training opened their season with a hard fought, disappointing 2-0 loss to Philip-Barbour. Even though the breaks of luck weren't with us the morale of the team reached an acme at the homecoming game in which the Battling Bearcats defeated the Shinston Spartins by a score of 12-7. Even though this years' team didn't show depth and experience, the lettermen returning will certainly improve next years' team. The year started out with a big disappointment as Tom Stolzenfels, the only returning starter, broke his ankle five days before the first game and was out for most of the season. The season record of 5-16 doesn’t tell the whole story. Several games were decided by a few points and in the last minutes of play. The experience gained this year will certainly benefit the four starters returning next year. However, the season did have its highlights as Paul Whetsell made All Big Ten in regular season play and all-Tourney in post season action. |NUK 75 B-TEAM KNEELINC: T Hussi°n, M. Carr, D Leach, M. Tom has been active in sports and has shown a flair for composition. Perhaps the one tiling his fellow students will remember most is his commanding voice. Tom may well be a second Coach McKinney if his vocal chords live up to their promise. Energetic, enthusiastic, practical—these are qualities of our Co-salutatorian, Judy Weaver. Judy is a driving force and has worked diligently during her four years at C. H. S. to help her school. When a new project is suggested, Judy is there. She is one °f the most sincere people in our student body, and a joy to work with. A flash of dimples, a sparkle of smile and here is our Co-salutatorian, Debbi Wcckley. Besides being an excellent student, Debbi has been a cheerleader, using her sparkle to spark our team. Debbi will be missed at C. H. S. 86 Small but mighty describes number four on our list of scholars—Lou Ann Dunham. Having a sparkling sense of humor and a wealth of energy, Lou Ann is one of our most dependable citizens at G. H. S. Barbara Wagner is number six on our list of scholars. A witty, energetic person, besides being a scholar, Barbara was Head Majorette for the G. H. S. Bearcat Band. A musician, a scholar, and a hard worker, Barbara has been busy during her four years at G. H. S. Linda Wood is fifth in her class. She is a quiet young lady. Her trademark is her gentle thoughtfulness which has earned for her a place in the hearts of her fellow students. A glimpse of a crooked, mischievious grin; a keen sense of humor; dry but hilarious; and an inquiring mind—these characteristics are combined in our seventh honor student, Jerry Duckworth. He is a competent, well-liked person. 87 A quiet, delightful sense of humor graces the eighth scholar on our honors list. Sue Stout is an accomplished musician and an excellent student. Hard work characterizes Sue’s four years at G. H. S. A fisherman, a hunter, a scholar, a politician (Student Body President), a student of many interests is ninth on our honors list. Bill Richman is all of these. He is a witty, but sincere person; a good well-rounded citizen of whom we at G. H. S. are proud. Sincerity, hard work and a bubbling laugh are characteristic of our tenth honor student, Barbara Lewis. Barbara is one of our most well-mannered and cooperative students. We have all enjoyed the pleasure of her company. Louise Tucker is the eleventh honor student. A small, efficient person, Louise has been a hard working citizen of G. H. S. Her smile has brightened the day for many students and teachers. 88 A tall, slender girl with a sweet smile and a sincere manner is our twelfth honor student, Virgie Mayle. Virgie is the possessor of one of those inately curious minds which inspires others to greater effort. Virgie is a thoroughly nice person to know. Susan Reneau, our thirteenth scholar, is probably best known to her fellow citizens at G. H. S. for be ing cooperative. Susan has that rare ability to co-operate and lead at the same time and still keep things running smoothly. Lots of pep and energy combined with the rare quality of self-restraint describes Sharon Toth, number fourteen in our roster of honor students. Sharon is a bundle of energy and ideas; she is one of the cogs that has kept G. H. S. going. Two students have tied for fifteenth place in our honors list, Linda Dean, and Kay Kunst. Linda is a cooperative person and a responsible one, too. She is a quiet person, but has an infectious giggle which betrays her sense of humor. Linda is known among her fellow students as one of the neatest dressers at G. H. S. 89 Kay Kunst is probably best known for her determination. An extremely busy person, she seems to find time for everything. One of her main interests is 4-H work in which she has earned several honors. A quiet, unassuming, hard-working student is Donna Garrett, our seventeenth honor student. Here is one of those rare, sparkling persons who works hard day after day to improve herself and her school. Truly Donna has been an addition to Grafton High School. THE VILLAGE BLACKSMITH Under a spreading chestnut-tree the village smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, with large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms are strong as iron bands. His hair is crisp, and black, and long, his face is like The tan; His brow is wet with honest sweat, he earns whate'er he can, And looks the whole world in the face, for he owes not any man. Week in, week out, from morn till night, you can hear his Bellows blow; You can hear him swing his heavy sledge with measured beat and slow, Like a sexton ringing the village bell, when the evening sun is low. And children coming home from school look in at the open door; They love to see the flaming forge, and hear the bellows roar, And catch the burning sparks that fly like chaff from a Threshing-floor. He goes on Sunday to the church, and sits among his boys; He hears the parson pray and preach, he hears his daughter’s voice, Singing in the village choir, and it makes his heart rejoice. It sounds to him like her mother's voice, singing in Paradise. He needs must think of her once more, how in the grave she lies; And with his hard, rough hand he wipes a tear out of his eyes. Toiling, --rejoicing, —sorrowing, onward through life he goes; Each morning sees some task begin, each evening sees it close; Something attempted, something done, has earned a night's repose. Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend, for the lesson thou Hast taught! Thus at the flaming forge of life our fortunes must be wrought; Thus on its sounding anvil shaped each burning deed and thought. 90 91 SENIORS Kathryn Lou Bartlett Sally Jo Bartlett Charles P.
