BASKETBALL The 1965-66 Bearcats will go down in the records as one of the finest basketball teams that GHS has produced in many years. Great teamwork and the will to win sent Grafton along to one of its finest seasons as they chalked up 19 wins against only 5 defeats. A new inspiration could be seen in this year's Bearcats, an inspiration that is only seen in a championship team. As the season began last December, Grafton's chances for a good season looked quite optimistic. Many veterans were returning along with a fine group of B-team stars from the previous year. There were also some fine newcomers. Could the Bearcats with their new coach really come through? This remained to be seen. Things started out quite well as Grafton rolled over the Alumni and Philip-Barbour rather handily. Then came the first taste of defeat as the Bearcats journeyed to Morgantown and were defeated in a hard-fought game. But the Bearcats, with that never-die attitude, came through with four straight victories as Shinnston, East Fairmont, R-W, and W-I fell to Grafton. Then came the second sting of defeat which saw Grafton lose to Weston in double overtime. Once again the winning attitude prevailed as Grafton again chalked up four straight victories. This time it was West Fairmont, Philip-Barbourj Buckhannon, and Morgantown bowing to the Bearcats. Grafton felt its third defeat of the season by losing out to a fine East Fairmont team on the Bees home floor. Although the Bearcats had seen defeat again, they did not fold; but instead, retaliated with five straight victories. West Fairmont, Elkins, W-I, Shinnston, and Weston fell before the battling Bearcats. Grafton, possibly becoming a little over confident along with a cold night fell to Buckhannon on B-U's home boards. Once again rising to victory, GHS ended the regular season with victories over R-W and Elkins. Grafton finished the regular season with 16 victories and 4 defeats which was good enough to earn the Big Ten Conference Crown as well as state recognition as one of the states top 20 teams. The season wasn't over by a long shot though. The long awaited post-season tournaments still remained. Grafton went into the sectional tournament as favorites, and in the opening round had quite a rough time with a rugged East Fairmont team. The Bearcats came through winning 59-58. The next night was the championship, and Grafton was faced with a fast-improving West Fairmont Squad on their home floor. But the battling Bearcats rose to the occasion and stunned the Bears 84-63. Now came the Regional II Tournament which saw Grafton facing a strong Buckhannon squad on their home floor. It was quite a fight all the way, but Grafton was once again victorious 70-68. Now came the championship game which wfould decide who would go the State Tournament. Grafton's opponent saw Richwood, which was one of the finest and toughest opponents they had faced all year as the Lumberjacks were rated as one of the states finest teams. The Bearcats battled all the way and led throughout most of the game, but only to lose out in the end to the hot-shooting Lumberjacks. The great campaign had finally ended, but not until Grafton had left its mark as one of the finest teams in the State. The Bearcat's Bob Starford was named to the All-State First Team, and Bob Willis was given honorable mention. However, it was no two-man show as the Bearcats displayed great teamwork all season long. If credit must be given, it should be given to a great coach, Francis Nestor, who in his first year at GHS brought back a winning team to Grafton. It was truly a great season and in the years to come, as many GHS teams come and go, the Bearcats of 1965-66 will still be remembered. 30
