Judy is noted for her sunny smile that adds to her pleasing personality. She is active in many clubs at Grafton High, but also maintains an outstanding scholastic average. S ALUT ATORLAN Bobbie Stansberry ranks second. Bobbie has achieved several honors in her athletic ability. She has won many friends while attending G. H. S. and is known to fulfill her duties as a student. Bobbie likes people and shows this through her understanding of them. 13 Marlene Shaw, Secretary of the Year at Grafton High School, ranked third in this year's graduating class. Her pleasant personality and intellectual enthusiasm combine to make her an outstanding student in every respect. An outstanding athlete in his four years at G. H. S. , Bob Willis, who ranks fourth will long be remembered. Bob's sense of humor makes him well liked by most of his classmates. David Shaver ranks fifth with this fine class. His higher education is going to be on the rocks --geology, that is. David has been quite active in school affairs. Carol Johnson is a quiet, conscientious person who stands sixth in her class in scholastic achievement. She has many outstanding characteristics. She is that rare person to whom one may give a task with the assurance that it will be done well. Nancy Haislip, who ranks seventh, is familiar to many as one of the G. H. S. cheerleaders. She has shown a willingness to assume responsibility as well as the capability to do a good job when a task is assigned to her. 14 The one quality a really good student must possess is curiosity, and Doug Moats has curiosity in abundance. His standing in liis class (eighth) proves this. It is expected that Doug's college years will be as productive as his four years at G. H. S. Standing ninth in his class is Roger Harvey. Roger is a combination of two rare qualities: practicality and a keen sense of humor. The result is a pleasant well-rounded individual of whom G. H. S. can be proud. Margaret (Peggy) Carr placed tenth in her class. Peggy's cheer fulness and cooperative ness have endeared her to students and teachers alike. Ranking eleventh in the class of '66 is Nancy Judy. Nancy is the one girl with two first names. A quick smile, a good student, and a friend is perhaps the best way to describe Nancy. She likes people and they like her. High scholastic achievement, athletic and artistic ability', vice-president of the student body, a sparkling sense of humor and a smile to match — Dave Dalton, who is twelfth in his class, possesses all of these qualities. We can expect Dave's future to be as bright as his smile. Ranking twelfth in the class of '66 is Linda Stevens, who has quietly made her presence felt in the many activities of G. H. S. She shares this twelfth spot with enthusiasm. Fourteenth is Ann Shafferman's rank. Ann is known for her honesty which is prevalent in all of her school work. She is a very capable student and always fulfills her responsibilities. The very active drum-majorette of the class of 1966 is Pam Williams who ranks fifteenth. Pam's years in high school show much time given to her studies as well as the many extracurricular activities she participated in. Susan White ranks sixteenth in the class of 1966. She will be remembered as one of our peppy cheerleaders. Her gracious manner and sparkling personality make her a friend to all. Susan was elected to the National Honor Society in her junior year. A girl of varied interests, intelligent, and a lover of good conversation is Sandy Mayfield, who ranks seventeenth in her class. Sandy will tackle any job with enthusiasm and still find time to study. 16 Nellie Goodwin achieved eighteenth place in the class standings. Her devotion to typing the school newsletter this year showed her ability to stick with a job until it was finished. Vivacious Amy Lewis placed nineteenth in her class. About her studies she is serious, but one look at her smile lets you know that she's fun to be with. It can truly be said that she's been a pleasure to have as a classmate. The Master's Touch 'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer Thought it scarcely worth his while To waste much time on the old violin, But held it up with a smile: What am I bidden, good folks, he cried, Who'll start the bidding for me? A dollar, a dollar; then two ! Only two? Two dollars, and who'll make it three? Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice; Going for three ... But no, From the room, far back, a gray-haired man Came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust from the old violin, And tightening the loosened strings, He played a melody pure and sweet As a caroling angel sings. The music ceased, and the auctioneer, With a voice that was quiet and low, Said: What am I bid for the old violin? And he held it up with the bow. A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, And going, and gone, said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, We do not quite understand What changed its worth: Swift came the reply: The touch of a master's hand. And many a man with life out of tune, And battered and scarred with sin, Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, Much like the old violin. A mess of pottage, a glass of wine; A game — and he travels on. He's going once, and going twice, He's going and almost gone. But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd Never can quite understand The worth of a soul and the change that's wrought By the touch of the Master's hand. It was a rugged season all the way as the fighting Bearcats fought to become one of the powers of the Big Ten. There was much anticipation in the air on that first Friday night, as the Bearcats traveled to Philippi to plan the Philip-Barbour Colts. The Bearcats were going into their opener with a back-field full of veterans and two experienced ends. However, the interior line was inexperienced and many waited to see if the new line could come through. It was quite a battle all the way that saw Grafton on top at the end by the score of 13 to 6. The next game saw Grafton faced with a fine Bridgeport team. The Bearcats scored first, but two second-quarter touchdowns on the part of Bridgeport proved to be the margin of victory as Bridgeport won 13 to 6. The next opponent for GHS was W-I in Clarksburg. The Bearcats fought the Hill-toppers on even ground all the way and the final score was Grafton 6 and W-I 6. The Bearcats then returned to McKinney Field and picked up their second win of the season as they handed West Fairmount a 14 to 6 beating. The next week saw Grafton pitted against a strong Buckhannon team. This was the game everyone was waiting for a B-U wras rated as one of the top five teams in the State. The Bearcats scratched and scratched and watched the Buccaneers touchdown for touchdown and with less than two minutes on the clock, Grafton was on top 24 to 20. Then disaster struck as the GHS quarterback, Larry Spadafore, who played brilliantly all evening long, broke his leg attempting to make a tackle. The Bearcats had lost their signal caller for the rest of the season and to make matters worse, Buckhannon scored in the last minute and a half to win the game 27 to 24. Things looked rather bad for GHS going into the next week, but the Bearcats with that determination to win ran over Weston 20-6. The next two weeks were dark ones for the Grafton as the Bearcats were faced with two experienced, rugged teams. GHS suffered their third and fourth defeats to East Fairmont 19-7 and Morgantown 12-7. The Bearcats, determined to get back in the win column ended the season on a happy note by crushing Shinnston 38-7 and shutting out Elkins 20-0. It was a season of ups and downs; but now that it was over, it could be seen that it was a success. There were many fine individual performances on the part of the Bearcats as seven of the first eleven were given honors. David Dalton was named to the All-Big Ten Conference Team and also was selected as honorable mention to the All-State Team. Bob Starford was chosen as honorable mention to the All-State Team and also honorable mention to the All-Big Ten Conference Team. Five other Bearcats, including Jim Reed, Larry Spadafore, Bob Willis, Chuck Ewers, and Tim Gerkins were chosen honorable mention to the All Conference Team. It was a team effort all the way as each contributed his share to make the season a success. Much of the credit must be given to Coach Spadafore for putting together a winning combination and bringing a winning season back to Grafton High. Great teamwork and the will to win sent Grafton along to one of its finest seasons as they chalked up 19 wins against only 5 defeats. A new inspiration could be seen in this year's Bearcats, an inspiration that is only seen in a championship team. As the season began last December, Grafton's chances for a good season looked quite optimistic. Many veterans were returning along with a fine group of B-team stars from the previous year. There were also some fine newcomers. Could the Bearcats with their new coach really come through? This remained to be seen. Things started out quite well as Grafton rolled over the Alumni and Philip-Barbour rather handily. Then came the first taste of defeat as the Bearcats journeyed to Morgantown and were defeated in a hard-fought game. But the Bearcats, with that never-die attitude, came through with four straight victories as Shinnston, East Fairmont, R-W, and W-I fell to Grafton. Then came the second sting of defeat which saw Grafton lose to Weston in double overtime. Once again the winning attitude prevailed as Grafton again chalked up four straight victories. This time it was West Fairmont, Philip-Barbourj Buckhannon, and Morgantown bowing to the Bearcats. Grafton felt its third defeat of the season by losing out to a fine East Fairmont team on the Bees home floor. Although the Bearcats had seen defeat again, they did not fold; but instead, retaliated with five straight victories. West Fairmont, Elkins, W-I, Shinnston, and Weston fell before the battling Bearcats. Grafton, possibly becoming a little over confident along with a cold night fell to Buckhannon on B-U's home boards. Once again rising to victory, GHS ended the regular season with victories over R-W and Elkins. Grafton finished the regular season with 16 victories and 4 defeats which was good enough to earn the Big Ten Conference Crown as well as state recognition as one of the states top 20 teams. The season wasn't over by a long shot though. The long awaited post-season tournaments still remained. Grafton went into the sectional tournament as favorites, and in the opening round had quite a rough time with a rugged East Fairmont team. The Bearcats came through winning 59-58. The next night was the championship, and Grafton was faced with a fast-improving West Fairmont Squad on their home floor. But the battling Bearcats rose to the occasion and stunned the Bears 84-63. Now came the Regional II Tournament which saw Grafton facing a strong Buckhannon squad on their home floor. It was quite a fight all the way, but Grafton was once again victorious 70-68. Now came the championship game which wfould decide who would go the State Tournament. Grafton's opponent saw Richwood, which was one of the finest and toughest opponents they had faced all year as the Lumberjacks were rated as one of the states finest teams. The Bearcats battled all the way and led throughout most of the game, but only to lose out in the end to the hot-shooting Lumberjacks. The great campaign had finally ended, but not until Grafton had left its mark as one of the finest teams in the State. The Bearcat's Bob Starford was named to the All-State First Team, and Bob Willis was given honorable mention. However, it was no two-man show as the Bearcats displayed great teamwork all season long. If credit must be given, it should be given to a great coach, Francis Nestor, who in his first year at GHS brought back a winning team to Grafton. It was truly a great season and in the years to come, as many GHS teams come and go, the Bearcats of 1965-66 will still be remembered. 30 VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM ROW 1: Jerry Duckworth, Chuck Ewers, Tim Gerkins, Tom Stolzcnfels, Bob Starford, Bob Willis, Bob Jones. For the first time in many years Grafton organized a baseball team. Under the able leadership of Coach Nestor the Bearcats have presented a record of 3 wins against 7 defeats. The victories were over Watson once and Philip Barbour twice. Grafton lost to Weston once and to Bridgeport, Buckhannon, and Elkins twice. Although Grafton's record was not too impressive this year it can be expected to improve as the Baseball program is extended, and in the years to come the Battling Bearcats will leave their mark on the baseball diamond as they have in other sports. TRACK Track in recent years at G.H.S. has become important as a conditioning sport, keeping our football and basketball stars in shape during the off season. This year the Grafton thin clads participated in four track meets, one at Elkins, one at Philip-Barbour and twice at Morgantown. The Bearcats fared rather well on the field as we had many of our track stars qualifying for the Big Ten meet. They are as follows: Charles Mikels -- 120 yard high hurdles; Bill Shingleton — Mile Run; Steve Sterling, Louis Spadafore, David Dalton and Charles Mikels — Shuttles; Bob Jones -- 440 yard dash; David Dalton -- 180 yard low hurdles; Bill Shingleton, Bob Jones, Bill Butler and Bud McKeen -- Mile Relay; Edwin McCartney and Tom Stolzenfels -- Shot Put; and David Dalton -- High Jump. 38 STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council The governing body of every high school is the Student Council. The purpose of it is to teach the students better citizenship. The members of the student council come from the homerooms. One representative is selected from each room to be on the student council except for the President and Vice President who are chosen by popular election in the’ preceding year. Since the student council is the governing body of the school, it sponsors many of the activities and projects. A few of them are class tournaments, dances and the purchasing of new equipment for the school. The Student Council is a very fine organization and it is a great honor to be an active member of it. ALL-STATE CHORUS 49 Brenda Fast, Sylvia Robb GIRL - BOY - STATE Boy's and Girl's State gives a fortunate boy and girl the opportunity to learn the fundamental operations of our state gov't. It allows the individual to participate in running a model state gov't at Jackson's Mill. The candidate campaigns, runs, and is elected or defeated for public office. Under guidance of qualified counselors business is carried on similarly to that of our state gov't under a governor and Board of Public Works. The participant receives a better understanding of our democratic form of gov't while enjoying good fellowship of nearly 350 other individuals from all over the state. For relaxation, there is a fine athletic program consisting of football, softball, volleyball, and swimming. The student returns home with a greater knowledge of democracy in action. Judy Teagarden Bob Willis KNOW YOUR GOVERNMENT The annual Know Your State Gov't Day was held at the Charleston Civic Center on February 28, 1966. This program is for high school juniors throughout the state. Grafton High School's representatives, Debbie Weekly and Tim Conaway, were chosen by the American History classes. They were given the opportunity of meeting and hearing our State Board of Public Works, the President of the State Supreme Court of Appeals, and several foreign exchange students. Concluding the program, the students saw our gov't in action as they toured the State Capitol Building. 50 Tim Conaway and Debbie Weekly Cooks Peggy Summers, Bonnie McVicker, Blanch Peggy Knight, Blanch Stutler, Bonnie Studer. Steve was the son of Mr. and Mrs. ELsey Poston. Quiet sincerity was the hallmark of Steve s personality. We remember him best for his slow, sweet smile and the sparkle that lingered in his eyes when he especially enjoyed something. His absence is a source of sorrow to the faculty and his fellow students, who wish to express their sympathy to his family and friends. 102 Ruby Bolyard Judy Boyles Steve Boyles Taffy Bartlett Robert Beltner Roger Bennett Howard Bolyard Lana Bolyard Bonita Arthur Larry Ash James Barcus Chuck Bartlett Demaris Bartlett Sally Bartlett Susan Brown Micah Burgreen Bill Butler Mary Ellen Campbell Diane Chucci Phillis Cochran Roberta Coleman Allen Collins Nancy Collins Tim Conaway Rosalie Corio Darletta Cox Jerry Davis Linda Dean 105 Toby Debarr Robert Delaney Martha Drummond 106 Michael Gibson Janet Glaspell Pam Glover Richard Hebb Don Hendershot Mary Hersey Cynthia Kirby Wanda Kirkpatrick Ansel Kisner Susan Goodwin Bill Grim Ellen Haller Elizabeth Hoover David Jones Sherry Humphrey Gary Jones Sarah Keener Bob Kisner Debra Kisner Melanie Kite 108 Barbara Lewis Barbara Linn John Linn Karen Linn Brenda Lipscomb Bill Long Frank Mantz Darry Mayle Dexter Mayle Faith Mayle Jack Mayle Virgie Mayle Edwin McCartney Hoy Me Court Dwight McDaniel Mike McDaniel Stephen McWilliams f ? 109 Grace Miller Bruce Mitchell Patricia Moore 110 Susan Reneau Robert Rutherford Linda Rice Janet Richards Bill Richmond Sylvia Robb 111 Stanley Sceigaj-James Schmuck Brenda Sevier Bill Shaw Delores Shaw Gary Shaw Leslie Shriver Joy Shumaker Clyde Shuttleworth Sandra Sisler Thomas Stafford Steve Sterling Joyce Stevens Rhonda Stevens Tom Stolzenfels Sue Stout Angela Stravrakis Barbara Thom Carolyn Thorn Sharon Toth Louise Tucker Richard Tucker Barbara Wagner Brenda Ward Roger Ware Howard Watkins Paul Watkins Judy Weaver 113 Albert Wolfe Linda Wood UNPHOTOGRAPHED JUNIORS LARRY CURRY JOHN DADISMAN JAMES DAFF ALICE DODGE KAREN FOX LARRY GETZ DAVID HADDOX ROSA HARTLEY GARY HAYES LARRY HUSK KAREN JONES RUBY JOHNSON RICHARD KEEFOVER PRESLEY KNIGHT RICKY LANTZ ALFRED MAYLE ALMOS MAYLE JULIA MAYLE LINDA McGEE LULA McMASTERS DALLAS MITCHELL ROBERT MYERS RUSSELL POLING VERNEN POLING ROBERT SETLER LARRY SHAFFER RICHARD TAYLOR TOM TAYLOR ELLEN WEAVOR SHERRY WEAVER DONNA WILSON SHIRLEY YEAGER 114 ANITA LOUISE ARBLE CAROL ANN ARBOGAST KATHRYN GRACE AUSTIN JERRY WAYNE BALL RETHA JANNETT LYNCH BALL PATRICIA ANN BENNETT LELEIA GAIL BOLLIGER 116 DIANE ATHELIA BOLYARD RICHARD DALE BOWMAN ROBERT EARL BROWN, JR.
