WILLIAMS Here Mr. Williams would not have written anything sad, so, in keeping with his nature, try to remember only his bright smile and cheery laughter. Since he was not here to devote his time and guidance, it would have been impossible for the staff to produce this book had it not been for his past teachings -- and the able assistance of our new sponsor, Mrs. Donald Williams. 7 1111 RETIRING TEACHERS Audrey Vincent Yoho M. A. , A. B. Mr. Yoho is our capable teacher of algebra, plane geometry, solid geometry, and trigonometry. He is often heard saying Now, look, and saying it's his turn to laugh on report card day. He attended school there to the eighth grade and then taught for a few years. He then went to Fairmont State where he took both high school and college work. John Eddie Whitescarver, in addition to maintaining a very high academic record, has found time for many outside activities. For the past two years he has been a member of the National Honor Society, worked as an office assistant, and been on the track team. While a junior he was a delegate to the White House Conference for youth. John Eddie is a member of the Beulah Baptist Church at Pruntytown, a member of the youth choir of the church, and an active member of B. Y. F. He has served his community as senior patrol leader of Boy Scout Troop 51 and is an active 4-H member. 9 SALUTATORIAN MARGARET LEE NEWLON Margaret Newlon has also maintained a high scholastic record during her high school career. She has been selected by the commercial department as the most outstanding student for the year. The selection for this high honor is based upon loyalty, dependability, poise, and service. For the past two years Margaret has worked as an office assistant and served as a member of the A. T. C. She is also a member of the Webster Baptist Church, secretary of the Sunday School and president of B. Y. F. In her community Margaret has been an active 4-H member. Best wishes to a.very fine girl! 10 Wendel Blair Turner Wendel proudly takes his place as third ranking student. An outstanding mind is one of the prime characteristics of Wendel. He really likes to understand. We'll miss that battered truck and the cheery, beep , beep! that tells us Wendel's here. David Thomas Norris Ranking fourth is David Norris. A happy smile and an interest in sports (golf) as well as knowledge characterize David. It can truly be said that he's been a pleasure to have as a classmate. Francis Lucas Warder Francis Warder captures fifth place in the class of 19 4. A versatile, interesting person is our Fran. He plays golf, swims, plays basketball, sings in the choir and has had time to make top grades besides. A delightful sense of humor tops off his personality Sharon Dawn Bolyard Sharon Bolyard has slipped into sixth place among her classmates. Quiet speech, a shining smile, and a quick mind compose this honor student. Sharon, too, has time for other activities besides studying, among these areA.T.C., mixed chorus, and many others. Thomas Michael Foley Mickey, a man of many facits, has also gained sixth place. About his studies he is serious, but one look at his smile lets you know' that he's fun to be with. Mickey is also noted for his excellent manners. Charm, intelligence, and a sense of humor make Mickey a grand person. 11 Rita Sharon Mendleson Rita Mendelson has placed seventh in her class. Here's a girl whose mind ranges over many subjects. First in fashion -- first in studies is Rita's slogan. Maybe she'll be a designer. Harvey DeBoy Thorp Hard working Harvey Thorp has taken over eighth place. A student who is very likely to succeed; (we'd be shocked if he didn't). Besides being a top student, Harvey has worked, before and after school, for four years and has become a trusted and efficient employee of a local firm. When Harvey says, May I have your attention, please?, we're sure he'll get it. Roy Edwin Knight Grafton High School's Music Man has placed ninth in his class. If it's piano, bass clarinet, organ, or just good singing you're after, Butch can provide it. He takes music lessons at W. V. U. and studies besides. Butch is one of our most versatile students. Margaret Ann Squires Donna Sue Watts Hard studying has placed Margaret Squires in tenth place. She too is one who has the determination to do much with her life. Besides her studies she is active in church. A sweet person, a good student, a nice girl --that's our Margaret. Donna Watts has also achieved tenth place. One of the twins who've graced our halls for four years. Donna's dark brown eyes sparkle and her smile glows. She's a good student and an active participant. 12 Erma Louise Funk Ranking eleventh in the class of 1964 is Erma Funk. A warm smile, quick efficiency, a good student and a friend --perhaps the best way to describe Erma. She has that rare ability to listen, give an answer, and really mean it. She pays attention to everyone and everything. She likes people and they like her. Guy Linda Packman Vivacious Guy Linda Packman has taken over twelfth place in her class. A bundle of energy, just bubbling over, is Guy Linda. She lives life to the full -- church, choir, band, and studies. (Guy is never one to shirk a duty and never one to go about doing something in an ordinary fashion.) Grafton's loss will be Wesleyan's gain. James Henry Poling Ranking thirteenth among his classmates is James Poling. Quiet, happy, unassuming, the executive type -- that's our Jim. Someday in the New York Times we'll read of his accomplishments in science?, business? What ever field he chooses we know he'll succeed. April Lee Poling Soft-spoken April Poling possesses scholastic ability along with a willingness to work. Always cheerful with a warm greeting and friendly smile, April deserves her rank as fourteenth in the class of 1964. Dottie Lou Watts In 15th place is Dottie Lou Watts. An identical twin to Donna, she is distinguished by her classmates as the twin without the dot of identity on her eyebrow. A quiet unassuming gal, she will take her place in the world and do her share. 13 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FIRST ROW (left to right) Harvey Thorp, Mickey Foley, Jim Poling, Harry Shaw, Glenn Morrison, Butch Knight. The Grafton chapter of the National Honor Society was established in 1931. Its objectives are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to serve, promote worthy leadership, and encourage the development of character. The society is composed of fifteen per cent of the senior class and five per cent of the junior class. To be chosen as a member of the National Honor Society is a great honor to any high school student. To show worthiness of being a member it is necessary to work earnestly helping classmates to understand difficult situations or problems which may confront them. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It's hard to believe that just four years ago in September of 1960, we entered Grafton High School full of hopes and ambitions. At first we didn't know what was expected of us, but we soon learned. To begin our year as freshmen successfully, we chose the following class officers: Phil Ondo, President; Butch Paige, Vice President; Maryellen Nicholson, Secretary; Becky Morrison, Treasurer. For homecoming princesses, we elected Danna Skaggs and Sandy Sinsel. We were off to a good start because in the class tournaments we won for the best decorated section, best cheering section, and best dressed cheerleaders. We we began our sophomore year, we felt confident that we were now a part of G.H.S. and elected the following class officers: Clipper Rinker, President; Sam McDaniel, Vice President; Wendel Turner, Secretary-Treasurer. Our homecoming princesses this year were Judy Ware and Sue Trisler. Time flies and the following September we were upperclassmen. We elected the following officers to lead our class: Mickey Foley, President; Sam McDaniel, Vice President; Judy Ware, Secretary; Kathv Furlow, Treasurer. Donna Jo Wright and Kathy Furlow were chosen as homecoming princesses that fall. We really worked hard on our Magazine Campaign and to climax the year, we held the annual Jr. -Sr. Prom in honor of tire seniors. With A Song In My Heart was the theme for the prom and we danced to the music of the Emeralds. Our junior year was full of excitement but it could not begin to compare with all the joys — and sorrows we shared as seniors. For that all important year we chose Mickey Foley, President; Paul Curry, Vice President; Betty Knotts, secretary; and Kathy Furlow, Treasurer. Betty Knotts and Sharon DeLaney represented our class this year as homecoming princesses. After looking back over the memorable years we have spent here, we find many things of which we can be proud. Representing us in the way of sports were: Tim Jenkins, Clipper Rinker, Paul Curry, Tom Markley, Phil Ondo, Francis Warder in Basketball. In football were Tim Jenkins, Tom Markley, Paul Curry, Jerry Pyles, Clipper Rinker, Edgar Wilson, Mike Miller, John Thompson, Kenny Bolyard, Dayton Mayle, Mike Mitchell, Bob Knisley and Norman Kelley. We proudly, though sorrowfully took part in the Commencement exercises which symbolized a closed chapter in our lives. As we with unsteady steps crossed the stage to receive our diplomas, before going our separate ways to make our place in the world, we said Good-bye to G. H. S., our friends and all our teachers. Although we will soon be forgotten or thought of simply as another graduating class, the memory of our Alma Mater will always be warm in our hearts, no matter where we go or what we do. 48 WHO’S WHO IN THE SENIOR CLASS Student Body President Joe-Paul Robb Student Body Members Carol Linn Dan Stout Clipper Rinker Bob Runner Mickey Foley Class Officers Mickey Foley -- President Paul Curry — Vice-President Betty Knotts — Secretary Kathy Fur low — Treasurer Boys' State Francis Warder Harvey Thorp Girls' State Betty Knotts Miss Bearcat XIII Donna Jo Wright Princesses Betty Knotts Sharon DeLaney Escorts Dan Stout Sammy McDaniel John Frank Bartlett Thespians Betty Knotts Joe-Paul Robb Football Paul Curry Tim Jenkins Tom Markley Mike Miller Clipper Rinker Kenny Bolyard Jerry Pyles Norman Kelly Chuck McDonald Basketball Francis Warder Clipper Rinker Tim Jenkins Paul Curry Phil Ondo Tom Markley National Honor Society Francis Warder -- Pres. Yes, after two years of tribulations, triumphs, wishing, and dreaming, it is hard to believe that we have crossed the threshold of being upper classmen. How we did it we'll never know. Our first year, although filled with awe, we showed our unlimited powers in the tournaments and selection of representatives. That year our homecoming princesses were Nancy Shelton and Patty Ware. Elected for class officers were: Rusty Starford — President; Patty Ware — Vice-President; Kisne Shaw — Secretary; and Dave Peters — Treasurer. When we became Sophomores, we went around with our heads held high because we were now looked up to. We selected as our officers the following: Dave Brunner — President; Patty Ware -- Vice-president; Cassandra Bolyard — Secretary; and Judy Culp — Treasurer. Representing our class as princesses were Cassandra Bolyard and Charlotte Duckworth. Now we arc Juniors and, in our estimation, we have done the title justice. I his year we have excelled every previous class in the sale ol magazines. Wc have chosen: Dave Peters -- President; Dave Bruner -- Vice-President; Patty Ware -- Secretary; Nancy Shelton — Treasurer. Our princesses were Linda Lake and Linda Flohr. Memories of these three happy years in G.H.S, will always remain in our hearts, but die one wc will remember die most will come next year when wc can finally say, Seniors at last! 64 Anita Arble Cornelia Armstrong John Arthur Kitty Austin Jerry Ball William Ball Patricia Bennett Molly Bishop Leleia Bolliger Diane Bolyard Richard Bowman Pam Boylen Gnesta Boyles Robert Brown Carole Campbell Shirley Carder Harry Carnes Margaret Carr Linda Clark Nancy Constable Connie Cool Richard Coole Martha Cox David Craig Elizabeth Crall Larry Curry Mary Curry Frank Dadisman Dave Dalton Terry Dalton 66 David Davis Jerry Davis Steve Deacons Steve DeBarr Marie Dickey Thomas Digman Alice Dotsone David Dwards William Ellers Chuck Ewers Barbara Facemire James Facemire Richard Farrell Brenda Fast Carol Fisher Howard Ford Patty Fowler Gary Fox Florence Fredrick Mary Funk Judy Funkhouser Tim Gerkins Janice Getz Diana Goodnow Nellie Goodwin Nancy Gordon James Gragg Bill Grimm Floyd Haddix Nancy Haislip 67 James Hardin Mary Jo Harr David Harter Roger Harvey Becky Henderson Gary Hoff Keith Hoff Becky Isner Rosemary Jackson Chuck Jefferies Linda Jenkins Sheryl Jenkins Romola Jennings Carol Johnson Arietta Jones Mike Jones Robert Jones Nancy Judy Phillip Kelly Richard Kennedy Patricia Kcrby Inez Kester Karen King Sarah Kirby Wanda Kirkpatrick Clair Kisamore David Knight Linda Knight Bobby Knotts Donnie Knotts 68 Sharon Knotts Mary Kuhn Gary Lake Jacqueline Lang Me Ivan Lantz Ronnie Lawson Dale Lee Patricia Leeper Amy Lewis Gloria Lewis Jay Louzy Paul Louzy Howard Lynch Layne Lynch Retha Lynch John Magnifico Joyce Markley Barbara Marquess Sandee Mayfield Larry Mauller Ann Maylc Dexter Mayle Eddie Mayle Ercel Mayle Jack Mayle Mayola Mayle Shelia Mayle Bill McCartney William McCloy Becky McDaniel 69 Carol McDaniel Donna Jo McDonald Pamela McVicker Phillip Menear Charles Mike Is Beverly D. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY As eager freshmen we entered Grafton High School on August 28, 1962. After the proper initiation by the Senior class, we were soon led to know who were upper-class-men and who were under-classmen. As freshmen, we proudly elected our class officers as; Theresa Skinner, President; Judy Teagarden, Vice President; Rosemary Jackson, Secretary; and Barbara Newcome, Treasurer. Our homecoming princesses were Theresa Skinner and Barbara Newcome. We won several awards during the class tournaments. Linda Knight won the best sportsmanship award. Our girls tournament team won a prize for the best dressed team and our cheering section was selected as the best. Our cheerleaders were Judy Teagarden, Pam Williams, Theresa Skinner, and Sharon Price. We feel as sophomores a little more a part of G.H.S. by cultivating a debating team and promising athletes. The officers elected this year are: Lawrence Spadafore, President; Theresa Skinner, Vice President; Barbara Newcome and Pam Williams, Secretaries; and David Shaver, Treasurer. Our homecoming princesses this year were Sharon Price and Pam Williams. Although our first two years have been eventful ones, we look forward to our coming years with much anticipation. 74 Bonita Arthur Larry Ash Jim Barcus Chuck Bartlett DcMaris Bartlett Nancy Bartlett Sally Bartlett Robert Bcltner Roger Bennett Atlanta Bolyard Howard Bolyard Ruby Bolyard Hubert Bonne 11 Judy Boyles Stephen Boyles Susan Brown Micah Burgrcen William Butler Mary Campbell Loma Carnes Phyliss Cochran Nancy Collins William Collins Jim Conaway Rosalee Corio Darletta Cox Jim Cox 76 William Crosten Squire Cumpston John Dadisman Sue Davis Linda Dean Bob Delaney Alice Dodge John Donnellan Bob Duckworth Jerry Duckworth Lou Ann Dunham Mike Edwards Gary Efaw Rodney Fowler Karen Fox Donna Garrett Frank Gatski Debbie Gay Louie Gerard Larry Getz Mike Gibson Janet Glaspell Pam Glover Sue Goodwin 77 David Haddix Twila Hayes Gary Haze Don Hendershot Elizabeth Hoover Sherry Humphrey Mary Hursey Ernestine Jenkins Eugene Jenkins David Jones Gary Jones Karen Jones Richard Keefover Delores Keener Sarah Keener Cindy Kirby Ansel Kisner Debbie Kisner Robert Kisncr Melanie Kite Presley Knight Sandy Knotts Shirley Knotts Kay Kunst Emma Nelia Lamb Billy Lambert Ricky Lantz 78 Ronald Larcw Barbara Linn John Linn Karen Linn Brenda Lipscomb Gary Little William Long Judy Lyons Frank Mantz Albert Mayle Alfred Mayle Almos Mayle Danny Mayle Julia Mayle Linda Mayle Virgie Mayle Ralph McCartney Dennis McCord Dwight McDaniel 79 Mike McDaniel Linda McGee Carolyn McMastcrs Evelyn McMastcrs Gregory McVicker Stephen McWilliams Grace Miller Bruce Mitchell Dallas Mitchell Darla Mooney Diane Moore Donald Moore Patty Moore Ronald Moore Jim Mullins Bob Myers Louis Neason Bob Nestor Karen Nestor Janet Newlon Lewana Newman Milon Ordiway Beverly Owens Deloris Patrick Terry Peters Velda Phillips Larry Poling Leo Poling Mary Poling Russell Poling Phillip Rager Richard Reed 80 Susan Rcncau Linda Rice Bill Richman Linda Ridenour Gary Riffee Eugene Riley Stanley Roach Sylvia Robb Shirley Robinson Virginia Robinson Roy Rogers Dora Rosier Wilma Runner Shiela Sandy Larry Sapp Chester Saucer James Schmuck Robert Setler Brenda Sevier Andy Springs Clyde Shuttlesworth 81 Ronda Stevens Tom Stolzenfels Sue Stout Diane Taylor Richard Taylor Tom Taylor Barbara Thom Judy Weaver Mike Weaver Sherry Weaver Sue Weaver Debbie Weekley Charles White Jack Wolfe Mary Ann Wolfe Linda Wood 82 Donna Wilson Sue Wilson Albert Wolfe Gary Wright Michael Wychoff Kathryn Bartlett Tommie Lou Cathcart Florence Frederick Donnie Gay James Humphrey Larry Husk Gerald Jones Ronald Knotts James Miller William Miller Leo Poling Jerry Rosier Albert Shumaker Don Weaver Mike Weaver CLASS OFFICERS (L to R) Tim Conaway, Vice President; Kathy Bartlett, Secretary; Tom Stolzenfcls, President; Don Hcndcrshot, Treasurer. Officers The Student Council is the governing body of every high school. It’s purpose is to teach the youth in the school better citizenship through experience. The student council is composed of one representative from each home room. From this exception of the president, who is chosen by popular election in April of the preceding year. It is an honor to be on the student council, but it is also a great responsibility. As the governing body of the school the student council sponsors many activities. The class tournaments and some of the dances arc just a few of their many projects. We should all try to support the student council and to abide by their rules, because through them we begin to find the keys to democracy.
