The 1963 RE-ECHO staff is proud to dedicate this year’s RE-ECHO to Hazel E. Cole, our biology teacher. Miss Cole was born and raised on Pleasant Creek, which is a farm community. She is the daughter of Everett and the late Ida H. Cole: she has two sisters and two brothers --three of whom have also taught school in West Virginia. She learned to love the woodlands, farms, and fields in her rural surroundings. She graduated from Grafton High School and Fairmont State College where she majored in Home Economics and Biological Sciences. Miss Cole stayed home on the farm to act as mother and counselor to her brothers and sisters and see them all safely through college before she completed her own education. She served her country well in wartime by chaperoning older 4-H girls who harvested fruit in the Great Lakes vineyards and orchards, releasing men for military service. She also served as a supervisor in a convalescent home for crippled children on Long Island, Garden City, New York. During these war years Miss Cole taught school first in Simpson then in Grafton High School. Miss Cole has also served as dietician at Minnehaha Camp for Boys, Pocahontas County, and at Cedar Lakes Camp at Ripley, Jackson County during their summer programs. Hazel Cole has been a good friend and counselor to many G.H.S. students in her role as advisor to several clubs. At present she is co-advisor of the Grafton Chapter Future Homemakers of America. She has taught a senior high chruch school class; Miss Cole is one of the hard working crew at the refreshment stand at home football games. She belongs to the Grafton Methodist Parish Church, Northcentral Home Economics Group having 6

ca served as secretary-treasurer; she is a member of the National Educational Association, West Virginia Education Association, and The Classroom Teachers Association of which she is now secretary. Her cheery smile and good natured kidding endear to faculty and students alike, although the latter agree that she is a demanding teacher and respect her for it! 7
