Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1963 volume:

What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul --Addison is RE-ECHO 63 Education is a controlling grace to the young, consolation to the old, wealth to the poor, and ornament to the rich. Diogenes ALMA MATER Hail Alma Mater! Hats off to you. Ever you’ll find us loyal and true; Firm and undaunted always we’ll be. Hail to the school we lo e. Here's a toast to thee. 2 FAVORITE IN RETIREMENT Miss Mary Alice Frum is not one to talk about herself, boast, complain, or ask for anything. She was born in Morgantown, W. Va. on January 1, 1898. Her parents are William S. and Stella M. Frum. She has six brothers and one sister. Only two are living, a brother in Morgantown and one in Columbus, Ohio. She was educated m Monongalia county schools, attending Morgantown High School. She received her A.B. and M.A. degrees from West Virginia University. She has taught school for forty-one years in Richwood, Masontown, Wyden, Parsons, and Grafton, W. Va. The subjects she has taught include English, Latin, French, Spanish, history, journalism, and Basketball. It's amazing how many former students keep in contact with her. She derives great satisfaction in hearing from them and about their successes in life. She is never too busy to lend a helping hand. In other schools she has sponsored various classes, organizations, and yearbooks. She has sponsored the National Honor Society for the six years she has taught at Grafton High School. She served as President of C.T.A. (Classroom Teachers Association) of Taylor County, 1959, 1960, 1961 and secretary of A.D.K. (Alpha Delta Kappa) National Honor Society for teachers, 1961, 1962. She has taught French and Latin in G.H.S. and seems to enjoy young people. This year, 1963, ends her successful teaching career. She wants to travel and is said to have a desire to own a yarn shop. We wish her success in retirement. 3 Editor -- Edith Paugh Asst. -- Sharon McKeen 4 Art -- Libby Paige Asst. -- Emily McPhail Adv. Miss Cole was born and raised on Pleasant Creek, which is a farm community. She is the daughter of Everett and the late Ida H. Cole: she has two sisters and two brothers --three of whom have also taught school in West Virginia. She learned to love the woodlands, farms, and fields in her rural surroundings. She graduated from Grafton High School and Fairmont State College where she majored in Home Economics and Biological Sciences. Miss Cole stayed home on the farm to act as mother and counselor to her brothers and sisters and see them all safely through college before she completed her own education. She served her country well in wartime by chaperoning older 4-H girls who harvested fruit in the Great Lakes vineyards and orchards, releasing men for military service. She also served as a supervisor in a convalescent home for crippled children on Long Island, Garden City, New York. During these war years Miss Cole taught school first in Simpson then in Grafton High School. Miss Cole has also served as dietician at Minnehaha Camp for Boys, Pocahontas County, and at Cedar Lakes Camp at Ripley, Jackson County during their summer programs. Hazel Cole has been a good friend and counselor to many G.H.S. students in her role as advisor to several clubs. At present she is co-advisor of the Grafton Chapter Future Homemakers of America. She has taught a senior high chruch school class; Miss Cole is one of the hard working crew at the refreshment stand at home football games. She belongs to the Grafton Methodist Parish Church, Northcentral Home Economics Group having 6 ca served as secretary-treasurer; she is a member of the National Educational Association, West Virginia Education Association, and The Classroom Teachers Association of which she is now secretary. Her cheery smile and good natured kidding endear to faculty and students alike, although the latter agree that she is a demanding teacher and respect her for it! 7 In this Centennial year it is only proper for us to dedicate our yearbook to such a fine daughter of these West Virginia Hills -- Hazel E. This year we elected Mickey Foley, President; Sammy McDaniel, Vice-President; Judy Ware, Secretary, and Kathy Furlow, Treasurer. Our boys' basketball team has done well also. We were represented as Freshmen in the Homecoming Court by Sandi Sinsel and Donna Skaggs. As sophomores we were represented by Judy Ware and Sue Trisler. The parade was led by the G. H. S. Band, the queen, and her court. That night, during the halftime ceremonies of the Grafton-Weston game, Miss Sharon McKeen was crowned Miss Bearcat XII by Mrs. Charlotte Moran Jones, Miss Bearcat XI. The queen wore a beautiful white wool dress with red accessories. Her court wore a variety of billiantly colored wool dresses styled in a like manner. The game was a scene of much excitement as Coaches McKinney and Spadafore brought our young Bearcats to a 6-6 tie with Weston. The Student Council sponsored a dance in the honor of the queen on Saturday night, October 13. Miss Bearcat and her court led off the first dance. Everyone danced to the music of a local dance band. The Skyliners. So ended our 12th annual Homecoming, but the happy memories will always be with us. 83 84 STUDENT COUNCIL Faculty Advisor -- Mr. Russell Walls. Left to Right (1st ROW) Pam Williams. The student council is an important part of any secondary school organization'and program, where as, it deals directly with the students. The primary function of the student council lies in the area of teaching good citizenship. By providing activities whereby the students experience self-direction and responsibilities within a well-defined limit, the student council fills its primary function. Another job for the student council is to introduce sportsmanship into the life of the students. For this reason the student council sponsors the class tournaments, with the sanction of the administration and staff. The student council is established for the use of the administration and staff in efficiently managing certain phases of the school's program, mainly those related to student activities. A student council can only serve these important functions when it has a keen perceptive of its role within die school program and has clearly defined objectives which are understood and accepted by the faculty and the students. The organization of a student council can be the most disruptive force in a school if it does not understand its purpose and does not know how to handle its affairs. On the other hand, if a student council has worthy objectives, and concerns itself with significant activities under the guidance and supervision of a very understanding faculty there is no limit to the contributions that students can make in improving the quality of their own education. Because of her high academic ability and perser-verance in her school work, Libby well deserves the high honor bestowed upon her at the_ culmination of her high school career. Libby has been well liked by both her teachers and schoolmates. During her four years she has served her school as a member of the Re-Echo Staff, art assistant to various teachers and has cooperatively worked in many class projects. Hard work, a determination to be successful, and a quiet manner of accomplishing these tasks have been combined by Sylvia Willis in achieving the honor of Salutatorian of the Class of 1963. Sylvia's sense of responsibility and dependability have endeared her to her fellow classmates and teachers alike. She has always assumed important roles of leadership and been interested in the various activities of the school. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, A.T.C., the Re-Echo Staff, and has served as an Office Assistant and Library Assistant. 87 Ranking third in the class of 1963 is our vivacious cheerleader, Emily McPhail. The rare combination of academic excellence, charm, leadership, and high character has won Emily many well deserved honors. She was elected to the National Honor Society in her junior year, was chosen homecoming princess, and selected as a member of the All State Chorus. Donna Newlon has slipped quietly into fourth place. With work her motto coupled with scholastic ability, she rightfully deserves this position. In seventh place is Myra Sue Thomas. Thoughtfulness and kindly consideration are a part of her. Her energetic spirit wins for her both scholastic and personal honor. Quiet composure and calm efficiency best describe Sharon McKeen. Scholastically ranking eighth in her class, Sharon has found times for many outside activities including cheerleading. Doris Frank, who has been active in the activities of her church, placed eleventh in the Class of 1963. She is a business major with emphasis on secretarial studies. Ranking twelfth in the Class of 1963 is Mary McVicker. She is a business education major with secretarial studies as the main emphasis. She has been a member of the A.T.C. and has found time to be active in the activities of her church. 88 Sixth place honors go to Edith Marie Sinsel, a business education major. She has served as Library Assistant and has been active in the 4-H club and her church. Her church activities include Sunday School Secretary, teacher in the B.E.F., and assistant church pianist. Clear thinking and intelligent foresight are characteristics of Kathy Facemire who holds fifth place among the scholars. Her ability and eagerness to learn have gained her this honor. Karen Currey places tenth. Possessed with a winning smile, a searching mind, and a working hand, Karen rightfully deserves this honor. Karen Forman ranks ninth in her class. Karen has done outstanding work in the Commercial Department, placing high in shorthand and typing skills. She also served as Office Assistant. With capabilities unlimited Edith Paugh has captured the fourteenth spot. Her work in the commercial field has been outstanding. Dependability and perserverance are two of her best virtues. Ability along with consistent effort has placed Betty Skaggs thirteenth among her classmates. Betty has also given of her time and talent to many of the extracurricular activities. 89 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY I am a member of the National Honor Society of Grafton High School. I have a greater understanding of the true meaning of scholarship, leadership, character, and service because of participation in this organization. It has helped me to realize the importance of these qualities and to understand why they are essential to the growth of a great nation such as ours. I can now recognize the purpose of the National Honor Society. It acknowledges worthy young people who are willing and able to use their minds and to use their physical abilities to help others in their struggle for knowledge. I know, too, that anyone who is selected to be a part of this great cause will try his best to be entirely worthy of the honor. I may, by serving this organization, prove to others that it is worthwhile and that their goal in high school should be membership in the National Honor Society. I may accomplish this by trying to set a good example for others. Each day I do my work earnestly in order to show others that I am worthy of membership. 1 try to help any of my classmates to understand a difficult situation or problem that they themselves cannot solve. I think that perhaps by helping them in a small way I may be helping them to establish confidence in themselves and to gain knowledge that may enable them to become a part of this effort. I myself gain self-confidence, respect, and a pride in knowing that I was one of the seven out of approximately 130 to be chosen a member of this organization. I have gained self-confidence in knowing the qualities that must be possessed by each person selected. I feel that anyone who really desires membership in the society can obtain it. A person must, however, work hard and earnestly throughout his school life, and not only in high school, in order to gain the qualities necessary to become a member of the National Honor Society. It is one of the nation's leaders in the fight for better schools and better informed students. If students are encouraged to work hard to become members of the society, our nation will become stronger and thereby more progressive. Even here in Grafton High School one of our society members may someday be a great leader in this nation. I say all this because our school is a part of one of the nation's most worthy efforts, and I know what the National Honor Society can mean. You, too, have the privilege of working toward that honor. She also was judged for her fine qualities of character, dependability, initiative, loyalty, appearance, poise and service. Sylvia has a pleasing personality and has many friends in school. She was active in the A. T. C., as an Office Assistant, as a Library Assistant, in the National Honor Society, and on the Re-Echo staff. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J.
