Hats off to you. Ever you'll find us loyal and true; Firm and undaunted always we'll be. Hail to the school we love. Here's a toast to thee. 3 DEDICATION Edward A. Whitescarver Mr. Whitescarver, assistant principal, is friend, confidant, and advisor to all the students of Grafton Senior High School. Mr. Whitescarver graduated from Grafton High School in 1931. He attended Alderson Broaddus College and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1935. He obtained a Master of Arts Degree from West Virginia University where he served as a graduate assistant in the College of Education and was elected to Kappa Delta Pi, national honorary in Education. While in college he participated in football, baseball and track. Mr. Whitescarver began his teaching career at Flemington High School in September 1937 where he remained until the fall of 1959 when he came to Grafton. At Flemington he served as teacher of English, French and World History, and served as Advisor of the Senior Class. 4 Baseball Picture—Memories of his baseball days at A.B. College. 5 t During World War II, Mr. Whitescarver served in the United States Army for three years and attained the rank of Lieutenant. On February 12, 1944 he was married to the former Anne Benda of Flemington who teaches Home Economics in Flemington High School. They have one son, John Edward, a sophomore in Grafton High. Mr. Whitescarver enjoys all sports in season but is partial to football. Recently he has derived much pleasure from playing golf. He is quite active in church work, holding membership in the Beulah Baptist Church of Pruntytown where he serves as Church School Superintendent and Deacon. He is a member of Grafton Lodge No. 15, A.F. and A.M. and Taylor County Post No. 12, the American Legion. One of his favorite pastimes is singing. He sings bass with his church choir and often sings with E.U.B. Mens Chorus and the Blueville Methodist Men. His basic philosophy is the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have others do unto you, which he puts into practice in daily life. In appreciation of his sincere interest, helpful advice, and kind understanding, which have been a source of inspiration to our class, we, the seniors of 1961-62, gratefully dedicate this issue of the Re-Echo to Mr. Edward A. Whitescarver. Mr. Whitescarver caught by surprise 6 ADMINISTRATION PAUL C. BARTLETT Superintendent The superintendent of Taylor County Schools is Paul Bartlett who has held this office for five years. Mr. Bartlett received his A. B. degree from Fairmont State College and his M. A. degree from West Virginia University. He is affiliated with the Methodist Church and is a member of the local Lions Club, a Mason and is a member of the West Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and American Association of School Administrators. RONALD L. KNOTTS Assistant Superintendent The assistant superintendent of Taylor County Schools, Ronald L. Knotts, has held his post since March of 1949, and has taught in this county since 1929. He attended W. Va. University and there he received his A. B. degree in 1933 and a Master’s in 1939. He is a Lay Leader of the Andrews St. Paul's Methodist Church. BOARD OF EDUCATION STANDING left to right: Mr. Ronald Knotts, Mr. John Jenkins, Mr. Paul Bartlett, Mr. Chester Blue. SITTING Miss Mildred Keefer, Mr. Brannon Riffle, Mr. Kenneth Godwin. 8 LYNN FAULKNER Principal B. S. , E. E. , A. M. This is Mr. Faulkner's third year as our Principal of Grafton High School. He has been doing a remarkable job and he is well liked by all the students. Mr. Faulkner received his degrees from W. Va. University and he also attended Cornell and Harvard Universities. With our long lunch line it wouldn't be the same without seeing Mr. Faulkner’s smiling face at the head of the line. EDWARD WHITESCARVER Assistant Principal Mr. Whitescarver, who is our efficient assistant principal, is liked by everyone and has a friendly smile for all. He is always found scurrying around in the halls and regrets there are but twenty-four hours in a day. He says he likes all foods, especially roast beef. Courtesy, honesty, and industry are the characteristics Mr. Whitescarver looks for in a student. He dazzles the students with his vocabulary of large words. We hope he will continue to be our assistant principal for years to come. 9 MILDRED BORD A.B., M.S., P.E., M.A. Teaches Phys. For our Freshman class officers, we chose Norman Adlington as President; Kenny Furlow as Vice-President; Becky Thayer Heldreth as Secretary; and Junior Cross as Treasurer. The summer passed quickly and with a little more confidence we began our Sophomore year. In the class tournaments we were proud to accept the awards for the best decorations and the best cheerleaders, and the best appearing cheerleaders. Our class officers were; President; Bruce Haslip; Vice-President; Bill Trickett; Secretary; Beverly McKeen. Our Junior year went very quickly and was filled with excitement. At last we were upper classmen and felt very important now that we could look down on the underclassmen. Many of our boys were outstanding in both football and basketball. Also we worked diligently to pay for the annual Junior-Senior Prom. Although there was some discontent over the fact that we had no banquet, the prom was a success, even though we served no peanut butter sandwiches to the disappointment of many Seniors. We chose Bill Trickett; President; Junior Cross; Vice-President; Becky Heldreth; Secretary and John Robinson; Treasurer. Now at last we have almost reached the end of our days at Grafton High School. In this most important year we elected John Robinson; President; Junior Cross; Vice-President; Bill Collett; Secretary and Terry McDonald; Treasurer. We have gone thru four years of sorrow, joys, surprises, and disappointments together. In just a short time our class will part company, perhaps never to be assembled together again. We have all made many friends, and shared many experiences. And in a few weeks we will be together for the last time when we take part in the Graduation Exercises, our goal from the first day we entered school, and we will not be able to help feeling and perhaps hoping that G.H.S. won't be the same without the class of '62. 36 WHO’S WHO IN THE SENIOR CLASS STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT Bruce Haslip STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS Bob Brown Becky Heldreth Carolyn Menear Linda Smith CLASS OFFICERS John Robinson - Pres. During our Freshman year we did not elect any class officers. The two girls who were elected homecoming princesses from our class were Nancy Shafferman and Dimmie Andrews. As Freshmen we won in the class tournaments best decorations. As we became Sophomores we were getting to know more about our school and also more about each other. We elected Kenny Dean-President, Emily McPhail-Vice-Pres., Judi Areford-Secretary, and Edith Paugh-Treasurer. We were represented as Sophomores in the Home Coming Court by Judi Areford and Emily McPhail. When we became Juniors we elected Kenny Dean as President, Bill Shaw as Vice-Pres., Judi Areford as Secretary, and Wayne Flohr as Treasurer. We were represented this year in the Home Coming Court by Edith Paugh and Sharon McKeen. The class of '63 are proud to be upperclassmen in Grafton High School. 58 SOPHOMORES 19 6 4 Linda Juanita Anderson Arthur Kenneth Madella Bo I yard Boyd Pamela LeAnna Brown Brutto Raymond Ball Delores Bradley Ronald Bragg Donald Bennett Fay Brown Linda Austin Sharon Bolyard Gloria Campbell Wilma Boyles Gene Burner 60 Nancy Clark Tom Coffman Mary Cox Blaine Cropp Ronnie Bill Cunningham Davis Gary Lois Dillon Efaw Erma Kathy Funk Furlow 61 Edna Goodwin Harold Gowans Patty Gower Veronica Haddix Beverly Juanita Haller Haller Robert Clyde Jenkins Jenkins Joy Bemad Jackson Jones Norman Elaine Kelley Kennedy Betty Junior Knotts Knotts Patty Sandra Holcomb Humphry Tim Emily Jenkins Johns Roy Robert Knight Knisety Richard Fred Knotts Lane David Judy Lawson Lee 62 Cynthia Peggy Martin Martin Randy Dottie McCartney McDaniel Earl Thomas Luzadder Markley Duane Sandra Mayle Mayle Charles Shirley McDonald McMasters Jerri Judy Loar Louzy Brooke Dayton Mason Mayle Kitty Sammy McDaniel McDaniel Frances Trudy Rita Harold McQuaid McVicker Mendelson Miller 63 Mike J. On October 19, 1961, the Grafton High School baseball diamond was the sight of pre-Homecoming activities. Faculty and students body members attended and enjoyed a bonfire thus which was substituted for the annual parade. On the following evening, during half-time ceremonies of the Grafton-East Fairmont football game. Miss Charlotte Moran was crowned Miss Bearcat XI by Miss Rita Kay Blue, Miss Bearcat X. Miss Moran wore a white corduroy suit with black accessories. The queen's court wore wool suits of assorted colors. The senior princesses, Penny Lawson and Peggy Exline, were dressed in kelly green suits. Edith Paugh and Sharon McKeen, junior princesses, wore purple suits. Judy Ware and Sue Trisler, sophomore princesses, wore turquoise suits. Patty Ware and Nancy Shelton, freshman princesses, wore gold suits. After the game the student council sponsored a dance in honor of the queen. The queen and her court led off the first dance by the music of the Cavaliers, a local dance band. A fine record marked the end of the Homecoming Festivities of 1961. Grafton determinedly upset East Fairmont 14-13 in the most exciting game of the season. Under the coaching of Randall McKinney and Lawrence Spadafore, the dynamic eleven boomed forward to victory. Because of excellent teamwork and outstanding individual performances the Bearcats obtained state wide recognition and many worthy goals. Leading the cheers for victory, whether at the stadium or on the court, was the task of Grafton's five vivacious blue and gold clad cheerleaders. Mrs. Mildred Bord has supervised these girls in composing new cheers and during constant practice, always working to keep spirits high. With these mentioned qualities, all and all, Grafton has proved that good teamwork and sportsmanship can make a good team. Congratulations are once more in order for our capable coaches, Rand McKinney, and Speedy Spadafore. 91 92 A.T.C. Members elected as juniors--Bob Brown, Bruce Haislip, Norman Courtney, Penny Lawson, Nancy Linn, John Robinson, Bill Trickett. The Grafton High Chapter of the National Honor Society was granted its charter in 1928. The basic ideas of the club is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, and to encourage the development of character in the students of Grafton High School. Membership is based on: (1) Scholarship; (2) Leadership; (3) Service; (4) Character. To be eligible for election to this chapter candidates shall have spent at least one semester in Grafton High School and stand in the upper quartile of their class in scholarship. The local chapter selects members once a year at the close of the first semester. Fifteen per cent of the senior class may be chosen and five per cent of the junior class. A council composed of the principal and a group he selects from the faculty compile the results of the voting from the entire faculty and announce the names of the ones who have ranked highest in all four characteristics, scholarship, leadership, service, character. There is no regular meeting of the club and members are free to participate in other clubs. For initiation the old members prepare an assembly program which is given before the entire school. The candlelight ceremony and explanations of the duties and privileges that go along with attaining this membership are part of the program. At the close of the initiation the candidates take their pledge and receive their membership cards. After the initiation the members may order pins, necklaces, or other pieces of jewelry which have the official insignia of the society. The keystone of the official insignia symbolizes high ideals and character; the flaming torch is the emblem of the light of truth and knowledge; and the letters C, S, L, and S at the base of the keystone symbolize the four basic ideals of the society. 102 With an average of 3.92, we are justly proud of this year’s valedictorian, Robert Brown. Bob deserves all the respect that can be given him; for not only has he maintained a brilliant scholastic record during his four years at Grafton High School, but he has also found time to participate in numerous extra-curricular activities. That music is Bob's main interest is evident. He is an accomplished pianist, and has been a member of the mixed chorus and the a cappella choir for four years. Not one to limit his activities, Bob turned to dramatics to become a member of Thespians, the national dramatic society, and took a leading role in the operetta given his junior year. To round out his activities, Bob served on the Student Council and became a member of the National Honor Society during his junior and senior years. Congratulations, Bob! You've truly earned the right to be called VALEDICTORIAN. The salutatorian of the class of 1962 is Bruce Haslip. Being president of the student body during his senior year, Bruce has been one of the busiest people in Grafton High School. In spite of his full schedule, Bruce has ended his four years at Grafton High School with an average of 3.69. Business has been one of Bruce's characteristics for his entire high school career. As another proof of scholastic excellence, Bruce became a member of the National Honor Society in his junior year. Also serving on the stage crew, on the Student Council, and playing football, Bruce has shown a variety of interests. For Bruce Haslip, the title of SALUTATORIAN is well deserved. 103 William Trickett through consistent scholastic achievement has earned third position in the Class of 1962. Bill, a pleasant unassuming young man, played end on the varsity football team and was elected to the Na -tional Honor Society in his junior year. He is well liked by the students and faculty. In ninth place is Kathleen Milinovich. During her high school career Kathy has been an outstanding student along with many extracurricular activ ities. Ranking fourth in the Class of 1962 is the charming and talented brunette, Linda Smith. Linda has not only diligently pursued her studies but has found time to be an active member of the mixed chorus and to take part in the dramatic productions of our school. Deserving much credit is Penny Lawson, who is tenth among the honor students. If anyone has anything to do--call on Penny--she is most willing to help. An athlete PAR EXCELLENCE, a student of outstanding ability and achievement, and holding fifth place in his class is none other than John Robinson. John, a versatile, clean cut, good looking young man, well deserves this high honor. A very live wire is Betty McVicker. In every class Betty has added a spark to all its activities. A very hard worker Betty deserves eleventh place and recognition. 104 A paradoxical young man of unusual ability is Norman Courtney. He is quiet yet, friendly; unhurried, yet accomplishes much. Norman has many talents, particularly in the field of science. Scholastically he ranks sixth in his class. Nancy Linn, a demure lass, compliments her class. Her pleasing personality has won for her many friends, who wish for her the very best. In addition to her school activities Nancy has been active in many outside activities. She concludes her school career being twelfth in her class. Carolyn Nose placed seventh among her classmates. Ability, along with long hours of careful preparation, has won her this honor. A person that deserves a lot of credit is our short stop, Becky Heldreth. In addition to caring for her husband, daughter, and home, Becky has found time to be an honor student and to be thirteenth in her class. 105 By being eighth among the high-ranking students, David Wiant has disclosed his academic ability.
