It is the hope of the staff of the I960 Re-Echo, that this issue of our school annual may serve as a constant reminder of delightful and memorable days spent together at G.H.S. Where is the heart that doth not keep, within its inmost care, Some fond remembrance hidden deep, of days that are no more? Howarth 3 STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Sandra Hufford, Secretary; Barry Williams, President; John Shaw, Vice-President ALMA MATER Hail, Alma Mater! Hats off to you. Ever you’ll find us loyal and true; Firm and undaunted always we'll be. Hail to the school we love. Here's a toast to thee. 4 dedication A.V. YOHO A.B. A.M. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.’ This, almost every student agrees, is the motto of one of Grafton High School's quietest, but most effective teachers, Mr. A. V. Yoho. Mr. Yoho is a graduate of Fairmont State College and also of West Virginia University and has both A.B. and A.M. degrees. He has taught mathematics at Grafton High School for more than thirty years. During the years he has been here, he has been known for his Friday tests. Mr. Yoho is very versatile. He raises beautiful flowers, enjoys camping, carpentry, and painting. He has a large flower garden in which he may be seen working almost any pretty day. He has constructed a two-stall garage and is often seen doing various kinds of work around his home. Mr. Yoho has also proved himself untiringly dedicated to Grafton High School during the years he has taught here. Scores of students, who have gone to college, feel that they were fortunate to have had the opportunity of having Mr. Yoho for their teacher of mathematics. We, the senior class of I960, wish to show our sincere respect and appreciation by dedicating this I960 Re-Echo to Mr. A. V. Yoho. We extend to him our sincere best wishes and hope he will have many more years of pleasant and successful teaching in Grafton High School. 5 Ke-Sdio Staff FIRST ROW: Pat White, Loretta Menear, Carol McKeen, Bob Harman, Carolyn Bartlett, Beverly Knight, Mr. Beeghley. Bartlett has held the office of Superintendent for the past three years. Mr. Bartlett obtained his A.B. degree from Fairmont State College and his M.A. degree from West Virginia University. He is Lay Leader of the Blueville Meth- odist Church, is a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Grafton Lions, Masonic Lodge, and is affiliated” with the West Vir- ginia Education Association, and American Association of School Administrators. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Ronald L. Knotts attended West Virginia University and received his A.B. degree there in 1933 and a Master’s Degree in 1939- Mr. Knotts was appointed to the position as Assistant Superintend- ent of Taylor County Schools in March of 1949, having taught in this county since 1929. He is a Lay Leader of the Andrews St. Paul’s Methodist Church. BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to right: Chester Blue, Clarence Kinsey, John Jenkins—President, C. W. T. Lockard, Kenneth God- win, Ronald Knotts, and Paul C. Bartlett. The Board of Education is composed of five members w'ho are elected every six years on a non-partisian ballot by the people of Taylor County. The Board appoints a superintendent as administrative officer, but they, themselves, determine all policies of education in this county. The present members are John Jenkins, Clarence Kinsey, Chester Blue, C. W. T. Lockard, Kenneth Godwin, and Paul Bartlett. 8 Lynn Faulkner, Principal B.S. E.E. AM. Mr. Lynn Faulkner has been a member of the faculty of Grafton High School for twenty nine years. He is now serving his first year as our efficient and able principal. Mr. Faulkner assumed his new duties, as principal, with a rich background and with adequate academic and pro- fessional training. He holds his degrees from West Vir- ginia University and has attended Cornell and Harvard Universities. We wish for him many happy and successful years in this very important position. Although he is principal he did not have to give up his mourner's bench, since he still teaches chemistry and physics. Potatoes fixed any way” are one of his favorite foods and though he is a very busy man he finds time to devote to his radio club and to scientific experiments. The students of Grafton High School feel that Mr. Faulkner is their friend and they think he is doing a splendid job as principal. Edward Whitescarver, Assistant Principal A.B. A.M. A new face appeared at Grafton High School in Sep- tember. Mr. Edward Whitescarver succeeded Mr. Robert W. Clayton as registrar and Assistant Principal. He came from Flemington High where he had taught for twenty one years. He is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College and West Virginia University. Mr. Whitescarver has a friendly smile for everyone and is well liked by all the students. He says he likes all food, but especially a good beef roast. He expresses his regret that there are but twenty four hours in a day. Mr. Whitescarver likes to see courtesy, honesty and in- dustry as characteristics of students. He does not like the I don’t care” attitude or the lack of a sense of respon- sibility. In the performance of his many duties, Mr. Whitescarver is a great asset to our school. We extend to him a hearty welcome to G.H.S. and wish for him a long and happy period of service in our school. 9 RUTH BATTEN A.B., A.M. Sherman Haselden; Ruth Batten; Carrie Packman Rand McKinney (Lef to right). Senior Class History It’s hard to believe that just four years ago in September of ’56 we entered Grafton High School full of hopes and ambitions. To begin our year as freshmen successfully we chose the following class officers: Carolyn Bartlett, president; Terry Keener, vice- president; Ronnie Moran, secretary; George Hedrick, treasurer. Returning the following September, we felt more confident and elected the follow- ing officers to lead our class: president, Terry Keener; vice-president, Carol McKeen; secretary, Sandi Hufford; treasurer, Pat White. We began our career as upperclassmen by electing Sandi Hufford, president; Linda Newcome, vice-president; Roberta Harter, secretary; David Lough, treasurer. We pre- sented as our junior class play The Girl in the Rain” which was a roaring success. To climax the year we held the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet in honor of the seniors. For our all-important year as seniors we chose John Shaw as our president; Terr)' Keener as our vice-president; George Watkins as our secretary; and Ronald Marshall as our treasurer. Our class was well represented on both the gridiron and the hard- wood by the following outstanding athletes: George Board, Tom Fawcett, Rodney Greene, Terry Keener, Ronald Marshall, Drewford Mayle, Nelson Miller, Ronnie Moran, Jim McCue, Mike Newhouse, Dave Nines, John Shaw, Howard Trickett, Barry Williams, Bill Withers, and Steve Withers. We proudly though sorrowfully took part in the Commencement exercises which symbolized a closed chapter in our lives. As we with unsteady steps crossed the stage to receive our diplomas we said good-by to G.H.S., our friends, and our teachers. We are well prepared with our background at G.H.S. to face the world and its problems. And although we will soon be forgotten we shall always remember G.H.S. and no matter where we go or what we do, the memory of our Alma Mater will always be warm in our hearts. 36 Compliments of HARMAN BROTHERS General Contractors Phone 240 Grafton, W. Now, I'm not bawling you out, but we have to get that book in on time!” 41 Class Prophecy Now since I am a real gone beatnik, I traveled the circle and one day as I was moving I hit a big city known as Graftonville, the handle was the same but the city- ville had changed. As I slipped into Graftonville I saw two big fat creeps, blabbing it off like crazy. When I looked again I saw that the slims were Paul Alexander and Harry Arble. I would have stopped and thrown a syllable but I could see they didn't dig my jazz, so I hopped down the earth where I saw Carolyn Bartlett, Randy Barton, Catherine Beltner, and Mike Bennet having a soda. I could tell that Randy was buying because there was one soda and four straws. As I turned I saw a real hepcat who was driving a little sports car. It was Freddy Bolyard and about the first syllables he threw was that George (Scrappy) Board was coach at G.H.S. and that Elvera Bolyard was principal. He told me that Alice Bowman and Jo Ann Boyce were still looking around for a man. As I moved from Freddy I ran smack dab into Junior Boyles and Marjorie Cochran. Then as I moved down the earth I went by a church and Steve Coulson was the preacher. As I moved by a gas station I saw Margaret Crim and Donna Current working on their hot rods, Crazy! I moved in and was calling figures and I found out that George Current and his horn were the King of Jazz. Patty Cut- right and Evelyn Delauder were his singers. I also found out that Nancy Denton and Jo Ann DeVault owned the poolroom across the earth. As I went over I saw Susie Ewers racking up the balls for Charles Fast. Tom Fawcett and Carolyn Fowler were playing the pin ball machine. Patty Gawthrop was picking a wine-o up off the floor. When I looked again I saw that it was Ben Gerkin. Larry Gerkin was making all kinds of noise yelling at Ben. Earl Glaspell was yelling too, but not at Ben. He was hollering because Delberta Godwin was hitting him over the head with a beer bottle. I thought I would get out of this mess as I moved up the earth I saw on a window, Annetta and Rosetta Gough, Car Mechanics.” John Goodwin was the janitor. I got hungry so I went into a small restaurant that Rodney Green and Jane Griffith owned. Douglas Haddix was the dishwasher. Bill Haller was the cook and Harry Knotts and Douglas Knotts were waiters. Roberta Harter was the manager. As I walked outside I saw James Hebb riding Dixie. Behind him was Tom Heldreth in his father’s big car and behind him were Elaine Hood, Sandra Hufford, and Carmela Idoni in Elaine’s old Ford. Francis Jennings and Calvin Johnson were dragging their go-carts up the sidewalk. As I stopped and talked to Bob Kent I found out that Terry Keener was in the nut house, because he was running up and down main street dodging cars with a football in his hand. I also found out that Jerry Kirby had got his neck broken, when he tripped over the bass drum in a parade. As I said good-bye to Bob I saw Beverly Knight and Carole Knotts walking on the opposite side of the earth eating grass- hopper legs. I slid on up the town I saw Sandra Lemmon out-drag David Lough’s old Plymouth. As I moved up the earth I stopped at the court house and found out that the judge was Virginia Marquess and the killer on trial was Mary Marsh. She had run over Ronald Marshall in her Pink Pontiac. As I sat in court, I saw a real thin man. I looked again and saw that it was Tom Mason. This made me half sick. As I moved out of the county, I saw Droper Ranch owned by Drewford Mayle. Out in the front yard Bob Harman and John Hamilton were playing golf. The score was Bob 18 hole in ones and John 18 holes in 5,000. I could see that this game was wrapped up so I moved down the field, where I saw David Mays and Dortha Knotts having a fight and Carol Hathaway was the referee. Harold Mendleson was watching. I moved up to the bus where I saw Loretta Menear. She told me that Judy Mick was still breaking boys’ hearts, and that now Joyce Miller was helping her. I also found out that Nelson Miller was still only 3 ft. tall, and Terry Moore was playing bas- ketball for the pros! Charles Moran was his manager and Ronald Moran was his coach. As I left I saw Carl Murray and Jim McCue playing cards and on the ground was Larry McDaniel with a knife in his heart. They asked me to play but I said I had to move over to see Nancy McDonald and Jerry McHenry at the townsville swimming pool. As I slipped into the cool pool I saw that carol McKeen and Ruth McKinney were the life guards, and when Buddy Nestor started to go down who do you think saved him? Nobody but Ann Nestor. I also saw something I thought I would never see. I saw Linda Newcome so drunk that she could not stand up on the diving board. Mike Newhouse was still trying to make out with all the good looking women. As I was talking to Bob Philips I found out that David Nines was in the hospital with a broken fingernail, and Shelva Parsons was his nurse. When I was leaving the swim- ming pool I was stopped by Robert Riggleman. He said that he was a model agent and that June Pratt, Beverly Price, Forrest Westerman and Patty Riblett were his best models. Just about then a tall dark handsome man came up and said that he was Clarence (Peter Gunn) Rutherford, he was looking for Shirley Sapp and Patsy Shanes for the murder of Charles McFarland. He had found out so far that Carl Moran and John Peters had moved them over to Phyllis Shaver's beer room and John Shaw had taken them to the underworld. He also told me that Paul Shroyer and Lonnie Simmons were the bodyguards of the underworld chief and the chief was Bunny Sinsel. Bob Smith was the head of the bootleggin’ agency. Just about that time the Chief of Police came up and it was Roger Smith and he said that Karen Stead, his top police- woman had been thrown into the river. Barbara Tansill was run over by a herd of elephants. Then I skipped the swimming pool and moved to the race track in time to see Donald Thompson win. As I was standing watching him in the winner circle, Carl Trickett came up and told me that Howard Horse” Trickett was playing in the Olympics for Mars. He also told me that Judy Valentine was in prison with the rest of her kind and that Donald Wagner had tried to break her out 3 times, but Ada Ward had shot him all four times. He also told me that Ellen Warder was a center for a pro basketball team in Pismore. David Wasrud was playing guard for the Cleveland Browns, and George Watkins was a prize fighter and he said Dorothy Weaver, Karen Weaver, and Jane Weaver all had something in common and that Pat White was married and had seventeen children. I said good-bye to Carl and went to the hotdog stand where I saw Barry Williams making wine come out of a bottle. I asked the fat lady for a hot dog and when she was getting it I found out that the fat lady was Freda Williams, when I turned around I ran into Joyce Williams. All she would say was have you seen Charles?” All at once Steve Withers came up and hit her on the head with a wet noodle and said for her not to say that Bill Withers was his brother. He was his sister. As I moved to the side I ran into Bill Wolfe. He said that Patty Wolfe was in the movies and Richard Wolfe was still in high school. As I was leaving the race track I saw Mary Zickefoose throw a handgrenade at Lynnwood because his hair was not parted straight. So as I was moving out of Graftonville I said good-bye you, you crazy mixed-up townsville. The Beatnik Since 1868 WILLHIDE MEMORIALS—V. C. WAGGONER Festus C. Waggoner was born sixty-seven years ago in Washburn, Ritchie County, West Virginia. He grew up on a Ritchie County farm and attended a country school in that county. Mr. Waggoner did not attend high school, but did his academic work in Salem College where he was graduated in 1917. He attended West Virginia University where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees. In 1923 he became a Vocational Agriculture teacher in Belington, Barbour County and in 1934 he moved to Philippi where he taught Vocational Agriculture until 1941. It was in 1941 that Mr. Waggoner came to Grafton High School and organized a Vocational Agriculture de- partment. During the past 19 years he has built up in Grafton High School an excellent department in Vocational Agriculture. While here in Grafton High School, Mr. Waggoner has had more than 800 boys in his depart- ment. He has not only trained these boys to be scientific farmers, but has helped them to become good men and desirable citizens. They are numbered among the very finest of the young citizens of Taylor County. It is impossible to even approximate the extent of the fine contribution Mr. Waggoner has made to better farm- ing and to more desirable rural living in Taylor County. He has had a wholesome and stimulating influence on all of his students. He has been a good teacher and has been a very cooperative and congenial member of the faculty of Grafton High School. He has also been a loyal and faithful leader and supporter of his professional organiza- tions. Mr. Waggoner has a twenty year key and will receive his thirty year key this year for teaching Vocational Agri- culture. He is recognized as one of the very finest and most successful Vocational Agriculture teachers in West Virginia. Grafton High School and Taylor County have been most fortunate in having Mr. Waggoner in his chosen profession during this long period of untiring and excellent sendee. He will retire from his profession at the end of this school year. Mr. Waggoner and his wife who was Miss Louise Rosier have seven children, one son and six daughters; all are married except one, who is a junior in Alderson Broaddus College. As Mr. Waggoner leaves Grafton High School, we, the Re-Echo staff, in behalf of our school and Taylor County, wish to thank him very sincerely for a job well done and wish for him and his family many years of health and happiness. His life and work with us were an in- spiration and the precious memory we shall have of him will be a benediction. Ill Calendar SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER JANUARY 1. Teachers' Meeting. 2.
