emor Cjfaw .Adfory Green and gloruous freshman That was our tutle un September T946 when we were so tenderly welcomed t Grafton Hugh School As the gym was not beung used we found ut to be a very desurable place to park our Kuddue Cars The upper classmen who experuenced many hularuous moments watchung us rush helplessly through the halls un a vaun attempt to flnd our classrooms never dreamed that the new students would un a few years be soarung to greater heughts than most senuor classes attaun After flnclung the Gurls Gym and the cafeterua we began thupkung about our officers and chose for presudent Benny Poe vuce presudent Jummy Ed Hughes and secretary treasurer Patty Patton We elected Vera Jacobs Lela Haun Mary War den Jacquelune Cox and Benny Poe as our Student Councul representatuves Many of us soon became actuve un the band and glee clubs and held places un varuous athletuc teams We were proud to have three of our number Mary Vurgunua Monroe Lela Haun and Mary Warden attend All State Chorus with flve of the upper classmen We returned the next September as sophomores wuth an almost unhuman desure to work on the freshman We were o typucal sophomore class wullung to try anythung After re newung our acquauntances wuth the teachers and Mr Haun we elected our officers Benny Poe was chosen agaun as presu dent James George as vuce presudent and Mary Warden as secretary treasurer Our Student Councul members were Tommy Sturms Januce Hasluns Jummy Ed Hughes and Rosemary Cutrught Fuve for Bad Luck was our unter class contest play Members of the cast uncluded Marcua Malone who was chosen Mary Warden George Moyer Jummy Yost Bull Knotts and Ra'ph Ruchmond More of our class became unterested un the bond glee club and other organuzatuons Mary Warden Lela Haun and Jummy Yost helped to represent Grafton Hugh School un Huntungton West Vurgunua wuth the All State Chorus Ronny McKunney Clyde DeBarr Tommy Sturms Benny Poe Danny Foley Jummy Ed Hughes and John Handcock dud a good 'ob un partucupatung un football and basketball What was ut an earthquake a tornado? N ut was the uunuor class of 1949 enterung Grafton Hugh Now we were honest to goodness upper classmen We realuzed we had some financual problems so we dudnt waste any tume un selectung Benny Poe as presudent Charles Jarrett as vuce presudent and Patty Kuger as secretary treasurer Our Stu dent Councul representotuves were Jummy Ed Hughes Gary Ward James George Benny Poe Jacquelune Cox and Barbara Redunger Our first bug actuvuty was the magazune subscruptuon cam paugn Furst place un the home room contests went to Mr Haseldens Vukungs who proved themselves to be the cham puon magazune salesmen Lowell Kurkpatruck won a raduo for sellung the most subscruptuons Pen and pencul sets were awarded to Lous Harruson and Robert Yoho a camera to Shurley Putzer and a bullfold to Don Harmon We were very porud and happy to have sold subscruptuons amounttng to Sl 276 55 whuch was more than any uunuor class had ever sold un theur magazune campaugn Another money makung scheme was a Chrustmas Party wuth Santa Claus presents and all the trummungs Our entry un the contest plays was Good Nught Please Robert Rogers was chosen as best actor and other members un the cast were Jo Ellen Hull Vurgunua Ann Todd Joan Wolfe Benny Poe Jummy Yost and Walter Courtney We had some very actuve athletes un our class Our var suty players were Benny Poe Clyde DeBarr Tommy Sturms Ranny McKunney Danny Foley Jummy Ed Hughes Tony Gen nette Ernue Sayres and Robert Yoho No one could have filled the uob as cheerleader any better than Vurgunua Ann Todd and Aluce Kurby who seemed to be made of pep and trued to share some of ut wuth everyone else The All State Chorus whuch went to Charleston was composed of seven uunuors and one senuor The members of our class were Barbara Redunger Mary Warden Mary Vurgunua Monroe George Moyer and Jummy Yost wuth Marcua Malone and Lela Haun as alternates Thus year we advanced further un dramatucs The annual Junuor Class Play durected by Mrs Haddox was another huge success of our class A Date Wuth Judy was a comedy whuch really deserved all the prause guven ut The cast was Rosemary Cutrught Lela Haun Januce Haskuns Marcua Malone Mary Warden Jo Ellen Hull Patty Kay Mary Vurgunua Monroe Duck Falls Ralph Ruchmond Jummy Yost George Moyer and Jummy Watkuns We clumaxed the year wuth the Junuor Senuor Receptuon and how proud we were of ut We worked hard decoratung the gymnasuum and had the double enloyment of beung able to look forward to our Senuor year and to the prom that would be guven for us After a well earned three months vacatuon we agaun en tered hugh school as senuors We mussed Mr Haun but we soon found that Mr Mackey was very nuce and we trued to cooperate as well as we could wuth hum We chose Bob Rogers as our presudent Jummy Ed Hughes as vuce presudent and Patty Kuger as secretary treasurer We were all soon strucken by the shutter bug As much as we hated to have our puctures taken ut seemed to be some thung that had to be done Look sad be pleasant look natural Thats what we heard but most of the puctures seemed to come out very sad undeed Carl Hershman John Hancock Benny Poe Clyde DeBarr Tommy Sturms Kenneth Sturms Wayne Shaffer and Don Har mon added much to our very successful year un football Our class voted Jo Ellen Hull to be our pruncess at the Salem West Vurgunua Fall Festuval lt was decuded that there would be two senuor plays wh ch seemed to be all rught sunce ut was found that there was plenty of actung abuluty un our class The flrst play The Call of the Banshee dxrected by Muss Batten kept everyone on the edge of hus seat ln the cast were Barbara Lobus Isabelle Henderson Patty Kay Wulma Lake Barbara Redmger Ralph Ruchmond Duck Falls Walter Courtney Fontaune Coch ran Jummy Yost Steve Katson Norma Sansbury Davud Sum mers and Katue Hamulton Clyde DeBarr was chosen by the Domunuon News to be on the All Northern West Vurgunua hugh school football team Now we are goung out unto the world We have had some wonderful tumes un hugh school and also our share gf troubles We wull separate forget and be forgotten but stull the memorues of these four years together wull always be um prunted un our mund and heart 0 A ,, . ,, . . .
