In 1927 E. M. Thomlinson, then principal of our school, organized the Grafton High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. G. Min- ette Watkins was chosen sponsor and has re- mained in that position since then. Members are selected by the faculty from the upper third of the class with no more than fifteen per cent of the graduating class and no more than five per cent of the junior class. They are selected for their scholarship, service, leader- ship, cind character-the four cardinal principles of the National Honor Society. The officers for 1949 are Mary Virginia Mon- roe, presiclent, Jacqueline Cox, vice-president, Barbara Redinger, secretary, and Lela Haun, treasurer. The new members elected in March were Delores Smith, Walter Courtney, Isabelle Hender- son, Betty Travis, Betty Roomsburg, Clyde DeBarr, Norma Cochran, Barbara Lobis, James Hughes, Betty Costolo, Charles Thayer, Mary Scarcelli, and Dorothy Hovatter. onor .fggciefy STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council was organized in 1940 under the supervision of H. E. Odgers. This or- ganization was formed in order that the students would be given a part in helping to direct their activities, stimulate self-control, and to better the school as a whole. Each homeroom elects one member to par- ticipate in the meetings and bring their problems to be discussed and acted upon. The represen- tatives from the iunior homerooms are held over the next year which gives the seniors two repre- sentatives from each homeroom. The officers are chosen by the student body as a whole. Several outstanding and popular students are nominated for the offices in assem- bly, and then a general election is held to vote for the new officers. The officers for this year are president, Benny Poe, vice-president, James Hughes, secretary-treasurer, Peggy Kiger. Mr, Mackey and Mr. Faulkner have been the faculty advisors for this year. agiudbnf owne! 5205?
