(£lass SHistorg 1943- 44 in September came a day that was a very big one, our first day In school. With Miss Tran as our teacher, we began this very important part of our lives in whicn we have received the education which will be very helpful to us in our future. 1944- 45 With our new teacher, Mrs. Grott, we all moved to the next room where we were taught addition, subtraction and, of course, reading. 1945- 46 We were all in the third grade with Mrs. Lamb as our teacher. This year was a little different from our previous two years, because we were in the same room as the fourth grade. This year we learned more difficult addition and subtraction and we also started to divide. 1946- 47 When we were in the fourth grade with Mrs. Carter the study of Geography was introduced to our very young minds. Tliis was the year that sev- eral or our classmates didn’t pass with us to the fifth grade. 1947- 48 This was an exciting year for us all because we were transferred to the second floor. Mrs. Rust, who was our teacher, had the fifth and sixth grades. We welcomed two new classmates,Kay Kennedy and Bob Bittner, who are still with us. 1948- 49 This was our last year in the elementary grades. Mrs. Rust was again our teacher. This was tne year that we sold garden seeds, and with the money made, we bought basketballs, baseball bats, and balls. Now we were all looking forward to the next year when we would change classes. 1949- 50 We were now in junior High and this was very exciting for us all. We would change classes and have our own lockers. The boys now could try their skill in basketball and the girls in cheerleading. This year we also had our first election of officers. 1950- 51 Finally came our last year in junior High. IXir- ing this year the boys had their first year in Manual Training and the girls had their first year of Home Arts. 1951- 52 With our class advisor, Mr. Machovina, we el- ected class officers, in order to raise money for our treasury, we sold magazine subscriptions and letters, ana did very well. This year we had a new member, Ruby Schultz. 1952- 53 This was the year we had the pleasure of sel- ling Basketball and Football pencils. We also had two bake sales, which added money to our class treasury. Towards the end of the school year we ordered our class rings from the Balfour Company. 1953- 54 This year we had five new members from Belden added to our class, namely, Erla Hist, Claudia Jackson, Marilyn Miller, Howard joppeck, and joe Stazzone. We received our class rings and were very pleased with them. We had the job of selling con- cessions at all home Football and Basketball games. During the year we had a dance and two bake sales, all or which were to help finance the Junior-Senior Prom. We chose a Mexican theme for the prom. Music was provided by Rocco Trombetta, and the dinner was prepared by our mothers. At the start of the sec- ond semester, John Hetherington from Pittsburgh, Pa. joined our class. 1954- 55 Looking back for a moment, we found that we still had a large percentage of our original class with us. They are namely, Carol Buckingham, Ronald Carmel,Leonard Howser, George Kazmierczak, Francis Longwell, patty McGill, Helen Metzger, Bob Overy, jean Strickland, Douglas Van Nostran, Ronald Vod- arski, and Barbara Wilczak, Now we became Seniors and with two new members in our class, namely. Carol Buckingham returning to us from Medina, and Richard Stewart, from Marietta, we had finally reached our goal. This our last year was to be very busy and exciting. To raise money for our class- trip, we sold Cfcrlstmas cards and stationery, held one dance, three fish fries and two bake sales, on May 14th all of us attended the Junior-Senior prom, which we enjoyed very much, in retrospect, we re- call those who have been our class room teachers through our four years of high school, Supt. B.B. Cox, Mrs. Edna Finlayson, Mr. Edward Kubuski, Mr. Alfred Machovina, Mrs. Wiletta Robson, Mr. Joyce Scahill, Mrs. Harriet Sheppard, Mr. Eugene Wurm. On our class trip we went to Washington, D.C. and all of us had a wonderful time. After we returned we were ready to be graduated and face our future. CLASS POEM Our days at Grafton High School, Are going fast that's true But, there’s one thing we’re sure of, We'll miss them when we’re through. For some, this well be their twelfth year, For others just their first; But for all tis our last year, Come better or come worse. We’ve had fun these years in school, And have learned a thing or two. But, now we have to face the world, And start our life anew. But we’ll always remember, Those occasions gay and sad; Of all the things we’ve done And all the fun we’ve had. Our class has worked together, It's always been alive, And now we re proud to say WE'RE THE CLASS OF '55. Carol Buckingham STORY of OUR TRIP June 1963 Today on June 1, 1963, Barbara, a successful buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue, Helen, a Home Econ- omist, and Fat a dancer started on their vacation. We had received a month’s leave of absence, boarded our plane for Ohio and to our delight Carol Buck- ingham, was the stewardess. After everyone was settled and we took off she told us George Kaz- mierczak, was our pilot. When we landed in Cleve- land, Carol and George joined us for lunch. We had a pleasant chat ana then we went to get a limousine to take us to the train. Who should be the driver but Howard joppeck. He said he was married and had two lovely children. When we reached the station we said goodby and boarded the train for Grafton. On the train we saw Robert Bit- tner, who was on his way home from Germany where he served with the Air Force. He said he had been in service for eight years and had decided to make a career of it. Upon arrival in Grafton we saw joe Stazzone over at tne Farm Bureau, buying supplies for his farm and he informed us that Francis Longwell was the Farm Bureau manager. They said we could use the hone to call our parents, but Ronald Vodarski came y in his Ford Victoria and picked us up and on the way home he told us that he was owner of a Ford garage, advertised as the best in Ohio. He hoped that he would see us again before we left to go back. We stayed in Grafton for two days then left by car for Florida. in Kentucky we saw a sign that said ‘Hethering- ton Stables’,and we wondered if it could be John. We decided to investigate and sure enough, it was our classmate John, who was the owner-manager! He was very glad to see us and he took us to see his stable of racing horses. We stayed overnight in Kentucky and then traveled on to South Carolina. We stopped to eat dinner in Raleigh, North Carolina at a beautiful Villa and much to our surprise the owner of the restaurant was Erla Hist. She told us she had lived there for three years and liked it very much. We said goodby and started on our travel to Georgia. There we met Claudia Jackson, whose husband was stationed in the service there. We had dinner at her home and then left for Florida. We stopped at the Miami Hotel and much to our sur- prise we met Ronald Carmel in the lobby. He said he plays for the Cleveland Browns and the team was staying there while they were in training. He told us that Robert every was owner of the Miami Hotel. We decided at once to see him also. He told us that he liked his work very much. We also decided to take in a few night clubs and we met jean Strickland and her husband. They said they have three children and told us to be sure to visit Kay Kennedy, and her husband in Washington. When we reached Washington we looked up Kay and she said she was apart time nurse at the hospital. The next day we took a tour of the Capitol and we saw Rich- ard Stewart, who was a guard there. He took us to see Marilyn Miller, who was secretary to a senator. We had a nice visit together. On the way back our car developed a knock so we pulled into a service station and who should be the mechanic but Leonard Howser. We chatted with him while he fixed the car and in a short time we were speeding toward Grafton. We were listening to the news and waiting for some relaxing music to come on when, what to our wondering ears should we hear but the rhythmic voice of Douglas Van Nostran. We were very much surprised when we heard this and de- cided at once to look him up when we reached Cleveland. When we reached WERE we met him just leaving for a record preview. He invited us to join him which we did.We enjoyed this immensely, but had to leave after an hour’s visit for our flight time was drawing near. Once more in our apartment Barbara was reading the newspaper and she saw that Ruby Schultz, was starring on Broadway in ‘Kiss Me Kate’. We decided to go to see it. Ruby gave a magnificent perfor- mance. We went backstage to see her after tne show and congratulated her. She said the players were having a party and we were invited to attend, which we did. We told Ruby of our trip in which we had seen all of our former classmates. We said ‘Goodby’ and with that we closed the story of our trip. Barbara Wilczak - Helen Metzger - patty McGill.
