Sousa High School Band CLASS RECEPTION Stage of Auditorium (Elaes JUatorg As the year 1939 came rolling around, September saw a group of ex- cited youngsters go tripping off to their first year of school. We got our fine start under the supervision of Miss Tran, whom we also had for our second year. In our third and fourth years, we had a different teacher, Miss Adams, who taught us how to tell time and all the multiplication tables which seemed hard to us at the time. At the beginning of our fourth year we welcomed Harry Jantz and bade farewell to Alice and Frederick Stanislawski, Doris Brown and Ted Collins. Our fifth year took us into Miss Knechtges’ room where we started history and long division. At the beginning of this year Steve Stefanik joined us. In our sixth year, with Mrs. Mitchell as our teacher, we welcomed Robert Meyers, Catherine Coyne, who both left us at the end of the year, Monda Lee Farnsworth and Shirley Neitzel. We also said Good by to Steve Stefanik. Seventh grade! At last we were upstairs. It was wonderful to have a different teacher for each subject and have our own lockers. During, our seventh and eighth grade years Geraldine Sumpter joined us. At the end of the year we said “Good-by” to Monda Lee Farnsworth. Freshmen! Now we were really in High School and could select the subjects we wanted to take. This year we welcomed Betty Pitts, who was here for only the ninth grade and said “Good-by” to Geraldine Sumpter. Our Sophomore year wasn't so full of exciting things to do, but we did select our class rings and were happy to have Clarence Woidejoinus from Cleveland. At the end of the year, Russell Stanislawski left us to live in Lorain. As Juniors we were the busiest we have ever been. At the football games we sold pop and “hot dogs”, and at the basketball games, pop and pop corn. We also sponsored two dances and at the end of the year we gave the Seniors a Prom, which was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by everyone. At the beginning of the year Dolores Pokopac joined us. We are Seniors now, and although it has seemed like a long time everyone of us has enjoyed all of the past twelve years. We look back over the years and see the brighter side of most of the incidents that at the time were embarrassing. The pleasure of working on the Purple and Gold, the dances that we held in the gym, and the work on the annual were also fun. The Draqa Club play, “Desperate Ambrose”, directed by Mrs. Finlayson, was among our last activities. The three most important events of our last year were the Junior- Senior Prom, Baccalaureate, and the most important of all Commencement Day. It was there that we said our last “Good-byes” to the teachers, and our classmates, and remembered all of the fun and hardships that we have been through together in the past twelve years. Tliis is Habrlel Geatter reporting the news. In the headlines tonight is the latest witness at the five-year-old Senate Investigating Committee under Senator Kefauver. Miss Yost refused to talk. She is charged with over-pricing her peanuts at her peanut vending stand in Brookside Park in Cleveland. She is under $500,000 bond. Diaster hits San Francisco as 100 people are left bathless. No injuries were reported but an estimated loss of $100,000 in the three a.m. blaze at Dory’s Turkish Bath. Dory Fokopac, the owner, if you recall, was at one time a famous chorus girl with the Ziegfleld Follies. Do you recall the name of Philip Kobb? You will probably remember him as the model citizen. Last year that honor was bestowed upon Mr. Kobb because of his neighborly deeds and the fact that he is the father of six boys. Mr. Kobb also belongs to the local Volunteer Fire Department at his home town of Happy Valley, Pleasantville, New York. He is also a member of the Booster Club, Kiwanis Club, the Moose, the Elks,town council president of the school board, the local scoutmaster, and participates on the town's basketball and baseball teams. He attends night school for Television and Radio Repair. Mrs. Kobb is suing for divorce on the grounds that she never sees her husband. Also in the headlines, is the military situation of our country. A one-time representative for the La Blanc HADACDL Company and now major- general in the army, Clarence Woide this week replaced General Ridgeway, as commander of our forces in the Far East. Woide, a three-star general is also present commander of the U. N. forces in Korea. Flash...The first woman in the history of the Navy, Admiral Shirley Mae Neltzel, has been relieved of her command of the U.S.S. Missouri.She was fired when it was learned that she couldn’t swim. And now let’s turn to the music world. Dave Parker, the former great saxophone soloist with Paul Laval’s Band Of America, is now playing the piano at the Hotsie Totsle Burlesk Show. Buddy Jantz, the boy sensation who is rapidly taking the spotlight and is also being nominated as the world’s greatest trumpet player” was at one time connected with a lubrication concern in Grafton, Ohio ........ that’s in Lorain County. A used car salesman, Don Anderson has been signed this week by Spike Jones. He will play the zither and beat a tom tom for the City Slickers. Anderson is an all-round music lover. In his spare time he conducts the London Philharmonic orchestra. And no for the sports of the week ...... After an unsuccessful attempt at professional football, Larry “the baron” Byczynski has joined the wrestling world. This week he is making the second appearance of his wrestling career at Rainbow Arena in Chicago His first appearance in Hollywood was successful over ArgentinaRocca. He has engaged quite a following under the name of Freddie Footlock”. He is usually accompanied to the ring by three perfume-bearing valets. Qiite a crowd is expected. Here is something hot off the wires. Art Tablett, the defending champion of the National Open Marble Tournament now in progress in Phila- delphia, this week gave an exhibition on Super Circus. Listen to this! After the show Art eloped with Mary Hartline. I have a couple of items that may be of interest. A housewife and mother of two children was taking care of her chickens on her small Texas farm when she discovered oil. The former Anna Nicely used to live in Ohio. We used her maiden name because her husband is working on a secret project for the Air Force and the Office of Air Force Intelligence forbids the use of his name. Justice triumphs again as prisoner Bob Lynch began today to serve a sentence at San Quentin for forgery. He was tried and convicted for drawing replicas of famous paintings and selling them for originals. He will probably succeed William ‘‘the weep” who was electrocuted last week as cartoonist for the San Quentin Gazette. His time will be spent on the newspaper and painting license plates. MEET THE COMETS Phil Kobb: A senior, who played his third year of varsity, won his third varsity letter by his accurate shooting and playing ability Phil closed out his last year with 151 points to his credit. Nice work, Phil. Larry Byczynski: His speed and good ball-handling enabled him to earn his fourth varsity letter. Larry could be counted on to cone through when things got tough. Nice going, Larry. Bob Lynch: His speed and playing ability enabled him to score 344 points this season and was sixth in the county scorers. This is Bob's third year of varsity ball. He was a big threat on the offense side for Grafton. Art Tablett: Art is a senior who played his fourth year of varsity and earned his fourth varsity letter. He took fifth place in the Lorain County scoring leaders. Art closed out his last year with 333 points to his credit. Mike Susak: A hard-fighting guard and a good ball-handler, Mike earned, his first varsity letter. Mike is only a sophomore and will be back to help the Carnets next year. Carl jantz: Carl is a junior who substituted at both forward and guard, and later got a starting position. carl was a lot of help on both offense and defense. He, too, will be back to help out the Comets next year. The second game with Brookside was another league tilt, in which Grafton dropped a 40-39 decision in a torrid battle; then the Comets traveled to South Amherst expecting to be beaten, but handed the Quarry- towners a surprising 50-43 loss. The Comets then suffered their second one-point reversal when they fell before an invading Ridgeville club, 53 to 52. The Comets, led by Bob Lynch, who scored 40 points, downed a hope- less Avon five 67-34, for their third win in five games. A tall Columbia team came to Grafton to win a 64-59 victory. Grafton lost the services of Phil Kobb, Mike Susak, and Bob Lynch via the penalty route, leaving only two regulars, Larry Byczynski and Art Tablett to finish the game, with the help of three reserve players. Avon Lake came to Grafton to take home a 54-44 victory and to get revenge for the loss to the Comets earlier in the season. Eaton came to Grafton, only to hand them another one point loss 52- 51, in a game which the Comets lost in the last 45 seconds of play. Then Grafton and South Amherst met for the second time, with Grafton making it two straight over the Cavaliers winning 69-56. The Comets then got revenge for one of their one point losses, beating a tough Ridgeville squad 48-34. Avon came to Grafton only to go down to their 12th defeat in 13 league games, the win being the sixth in 13 games for Grafton. Grafton ended up the league play by dropping a 71-57 decision to a tall Columbia team. Hie Grafton Comets closed the 1951 season with a 71-45 victory over the Belden Bees, to make the season record 7 wins and 8 defeats. Grafton drew Brownhelm on the Tournament Play at Oberlin, and came home with a 53-46 victory over the Western Division Champions. The Comets led by Bob Lynch with 17 points, with carl Jantz and Art Tablett getting 12 points to their credit. After the Brownhelm game Grafton played Clearview, which proved to be a torrid battle, in which both teams were tied at the first and second quarters, 13-13, 28-28, respectively. The Grafton Oomets got off to a good start at the second half, getting a five point lead, but Clearview tied up the score 42-42, and 48-48, in the last quarter. Art Tablett was fouled and made a free throw to give Grafton a 49-48 lead, then Larry Byczynski sank another free throw and gaveGrafton the points to win the game. The Comets then played Lorain St. Mary’s and came home with a 53-35 victory over the Steelmen. Grafton, led by Bob Lynch, who rattled the hoop for 25 points, won its third straight game in Tournament play. Oberlin surprised Grafton by beating them 44-42 in a hard-fought battle all tne way. Grafton ledbyArt Tablett with 14 points followed by Bob Lynch with 12points and Phil Kobb with 11 points and gave the Oberlin team a hard time of it. The Grafton Oomets ended the season with 10 wins and 9 setbacks, it was one of the best seasons Grafton has had for a long time and the members who will be back again next year are looking forward to a better season.
