Barlow The following eulogy was read at the memorial mass for Bruce Barlow at St. Mary's Church . . . Bruce Barlow, a friend who meant so much to so many people, a friend who meant so much to me. I would like to share some stories and memories with all of you about my friend Bruce. Stories and memories that will live with me forever. Bruce grew up in Manasquan, New lersey, a small resort town on the New lersey shore. Llke most young boys who grew up in New England rooting for the Red Sox, Bruce grew up rooting for those amazing Mets. His dream as a boy was to play third base for his Mets. Bruce loved all sports. He knew more facts and records than are now listed in the I987 Sports Almanac. Bruce went to Parochial School until high school, and of course, he shared with me Nun stories and lokes. I know that together with his parents, those nuns set the foundation for the type of person Bruce grew into, lust as Bruce has set the foundation for many of his students here today. You, as par- ents, please be assured that your children were in good hands when around Bruce, and you students may you some- day do what Bruce will not be here to do for another. Bruce later went to the University of New England where his claim to fame was not graduating number one in his class as a Biology malor, but by eating a gallon of ice cream in lust under ten minutes, still a school record. Boy did we have some fun eating together. I first met Bruce when I was a substitute teacher at the High School In I980. I remember sitting in the teachers room one day, and ln walks this young guy who immediately becomes the center of everyones attention. There was something about him that made me like him Immediately. He seemed to be so positive, up and enthusiastic. He had myself and everyone else laughing in minutes. The next day we were playing tennis together, and thus began slx years of the fiercest battles on the tennis court you could Imagine. When we played against each other it didn't really seem to matter who won or lost the match. What was Important was to see who could hlt the ball the hardest, serve the most aces, or make the most fantastic shot. He loved the challenge of doing the impossible and he really loved reminding me that the only person alive who could have returned the shot that lust went by me was the person who hit it . . . Bruce. Bruce was also very religious. He didn't talk much, but I know he was. He never missed a Sunday mass. Bruce loved music. He was quite the conversationlist. Never at a loss for words. He often visited his parents and came back with stories about how his mother couldn't cook which was hard to believe. And stories of how he and his father caught 20 fish which was a slow day for them. He talked about his grand- mother, and competing with his brother Brian in everything from basketball to whiffle ball. According to Bruce, he never lost to Brian. He once told me about the time Brian passed a football deep to him and how he caught it one-handed while diving over the neighbor's hedges and landed in the mud. He never thought about getting hurt. All he cared about was catching that football In a spectacular way. Anyone can catch It with two hands. If you knew Bruce, I know you can picture him diving over the hedge for that ball and springing to his feet to try It again. Bruce has a lot of friends here today, a few by first names and nicknames I would like to mention. To Charlie, Dick, Gary, Bergle, Danny, Kevin, Ralphy, the Buckaroo, and Debbie Dooskl - he thought about you a lot because he talked about all of you to me all the time. He also had good tlhlngs to say about his fellow teachers. I know you all will miss Im. I'm going to miss him yelling out to me while I'm playing mixed doubles against him with my wife Debbie, Where were you In '62? after a ball goes whizzing by Debbie. Of course it was my fault we lost the point. I should have had it, not Debbie. Debbie of course smiles and agrees with Bruce. I'm going to miss sitting in the pouring rain on a cold fall afternoon watching a football game at Fitton Field. Only Bruce would be crazy enough to go with me. I'm going to miss going to basketball games, watching games on T.V. with him and waking up at three o'clock in the morning to go fishing. I know that Mike, Steve, and his other fishing buddies will miss that too. I'm going to miss Bruce coming to watch me play tennis. I can't believe he could sit through all those matches and just 4 OPENING watch alongside my other fan, Debbie. Boy that meant a lot to me. What impressed me the most about Bruce was that he was a tremendous teacher and leader. He was President of the G.T.A., supervised the school newspaper, and the girls' varsity tennis coach. He loved his kids and talked about them often to me. I know that Lisa and Kara and the rest of his girls meant a lot to him. He was the type of guy who would do anything he could to help his girls as he did. Bruce was the type of person to always chaperon Friday night dances, go away with the baseball team for a weekend at the Cape, help coach the girls' basketball team and pitch batting practice to the baseball team before an important game. He didn't receive any money for it and didn't expect or want a thank-you. He did it because you were all important to him. He wanted to see you succeed and to share with you the good times as well as the bad. If you went to a basketball game on a Friday night, who was the only person over I8 sitting right in the middle of I00 screaming kids in the student section. Who took you on, one- on-one in the gym after school or took you fishing on the bridge at the Wachusett Reservoir, or kicked your butt on the tennis court. Boy and could Bruce dress. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you he had a different tie for every day of the week and a different sport coat for every week of the year. I'm going to miss my brother Bruce for some very selfish reasons. Probably because he made me feel so happy and I felt so good when he was around. As Lou Boutiette stated in a recent phone conversation, Bruce was a very special person. He made you laugh when you needed to laugh. I have no doubts as to where Bruce is right now. he's in heaven, probably chuckling over some of these memories and keeping watch over us in Manasquan and all of you in Grafton. I know that when it's my turn to go, he's going to be standing there behind St. Peter with a tennis racket in his hand waiting for the next encounter. I look forward to that day. Before I end, I would like to mention that Bruce's parents and relatives thank you for all the love and support you have shown. In closing, thank you Neil, Mike, Steve, and Chris for your support and help In the last few days. I couldn't have done it without you and Thank you Bruce for being my friend and leaving me with so many happy memories. Amen and God Bless you all for letting me share. lim Esposito In Memory of Donald Corriveau Throughout your iourney in life, there are many hardships and times of troubles that you must face. There are people you know and care about, there are certain people you will in reality lose. On May 27, l988, Grafton lost one person who many knew and loved, Donald Corriveau a wonderful person who touched the hearts of everyone. He was so alive and full of life, no matter what mood he was in, he could always bring that troublesome smirk upon his face. Donald always tried to help others when they were in trouble because he valued his friends, relatives, and as we all know, his life. He always had the talent of working with his hands, whether it was woodcarving, playing ice hockey, or even carrying the wood for his father, Arthur, into the house. His parents were originally from Canada, he was so proud to be a Frenchman: it made him feel dominant. Donald was IOOOA French and he definitely showed it through his stubbornness. Donald had great love for many things but a great amount of it was for his motorcycle. He always wanted to ride that bike no matter what people would say, he would do what he wanted and because of this his iourney through life was ended abruptly. Although he went into a better world than we all know of, at least he was taken while he was enioying his life to the fullest. Donald was the type of person who would always want to live today like you were going to die tomorrow. We all know that when our time comes he will be waiting with open arms and a smile to take us to our afterlife where we will be and where he is as free as a bird like dust in the wind on his way to the stairway to heaven. FEES 6 Spirit The Class of 1988 One thing Grafton High takes the most pride in is our spirit. That never-ending desire to show each other how much we appreciate their efforts and to let our op- ponents know how badly they are about to be beaten. lt is not unusual to go to a sporting event and see Grafton posters, Indian war paint upon faces or the voices of the fans chanting an ever- popular cheer for their team. Each class seems to have its own cheering section, the largest being the senior section, of course. For four years, we have banded together to let other schools know that we are the best, if not on record, in en- thusiasm. As we climb into the bleachers all differences are put aside, we are united in a common bond. Not many schools can claim the loyalty ours has enioyed. Our ef- forts to promote our school or class as the best has been evident in our being a- warded the sportsmanship award and winning first place in the pep-rallies since our freshman year, coming in second only once to the Class of '89. Our dedication can be measured in the miles so many hockey fans have traveled to see the ln- dians take the ice or in the gallons of water that have rained on hard core football fans lremember Millbury?l. As we leave Graf- ton High not only will we leave an exam- ple for others to follow, but we will take with us a great sense of pride to share with others in our futures. . Y . ' Q' U .5 s. Personal and family living is a course in which students learn about themselves, their peers and what life has in store for them when they graduate from high school. The main event comes at the end of the school year. It is the weddings which take place and involve the students in each class. There is a lot of planning and stress involved in preparing for these weddings. First of all, students must have money and lots of it. They also rfeed flowers, tuxes, gowns, presents for the wedding party, and a place for the recep- tion. It is also important to have good food, a good band, and a photographer. Our mock weddings were as close to the real things as we could get them. We had three sep- arate weddings, one for each class. The first class's wedding party was made up of Kara Nichols, the bride, Michele Cooper, her maid of honor, and Ann Leofanti and Bonnie Bonge, her bridesmaids. It also included Todd Nicholson, the groom, Rob Mathis, the best man, and Steven Richard and Ricky Lukasevicz, ushers. Much planning and preparation went into all three weddings. lan, from lan's Bridals, spoke to all three classes and provided the wedding gowns free of charge. For this wedding, Robert L's donated the tuxes. Members of each class spent the morning dec- orating the auditorium. These were wooden arches with crepe paper flowers, streamers, and flowers down the side of the aisles. The most profit- able was the New England Patriots vs. Grafton. The Pats came to our gym and played basketball against four of our teams. The first SI500 in profit went to charity. The rest went to the class treasury. A good time was had by all- faculty and alumni, who were beaten, boys team, which was also beaten, and the girls' team, which beat the Patriots. Exploring New Horizons Grafton High Soccer ln i987 soccer was finally insti- tuted at Grafton High at the iunior varsity level. The season began slowly with only four players attend- ing the first practice. We were told by our coach not to be discouraged by this and to keep the faith. As the season went on, the team worked hard and more players joined the squad. Some of the players who ioined the team didn't fully under- stand the gamep at the end of the season we had a confident team thanks to the fine coaching of Mike Flynn. Our short season culminated when we tied a tough and experienced Millbury team. The game ended in a tie, but it was a moral victory for our young team. Great New Prospects Future Greatness The l987 football season begin with I5-0 victory over the Millbury Woolies on a rainy Friday night. The only other win the Indians achieved this season was against the Oxford football team. Richard Egsegian, lohn Caputo and lames Bergenholtz coached the Varsity team this year. The tri-captains were fullback Dan Fleming, tackle lim Gar- abedian and quarterback Dave lolie. The key offensive players of the team were Dan Fleming, Dave lolie and lohn Martin who made most of the team's touchdowns. The final record was 2 wins to 8 losses. Although this may seem like a bad record, the football team had to deal with the loss of many key senior players. The coaches staff 96 SPORTS and captains managed to pull a team together with the remaining players. There is no doubt that this fledgling team will be a force to contend with in the coming seasons. The layvee football team had a very good season with a final record of 7 wins to 5 losses. Coaching them were two former Grafton High football players, Steve Woinar and Mike Ross. Some of the key offensive players were loey Maynard. Tom Standring and Dave Scichilone. The fine performance of the layvee team shows the ability of upcoming freshmen and sophomores. Without question, this advantage will be used to its full potential in forminga new winning team for Grafton High. Although, they didn't qualify for the Clark Tournament they did participate in the district tournament, where no Grafton team has won a game in nearly ten years. However, this year was dif- ferent, the team defeated their first opponent, Groton Dunstable, in an exciting game. First to be iniured was senior Steven Loopa Richards with a dislocated shoulder. Others to loin him on the injured list included seniors David Przygoda and Tom Ludy. Although at times there were fewer than two complete lines of players due to iniuries, the team continued winnings with the losses only spattered among them. The seniors of this year's team included Tom Ludy, Michael Roseen, Donald Corriveau, David Przygoda, Steven Richards, Gary Lipscomb, T.l. Casale, and co-captains Ken Novick and Todd Nicholson. Of these seniors Ken, Gary, and Steven, along with iunior Dennis Hardiman, led the team in goals scored. Todd Nicholson and Tony DiDonna along with other defensemen successful protected goalies T.I. De- spite the loss of many seniors to gradu- ation, most in the top positions, as well as having to adjust to their new coach, Mr. Kaufman, the girls proved they could put their instructor's advice to work at play. Their only senior, Mary Noonan, was fol- lowed by iuniors Colleen Flynn, Pam Fields, Tracy Frederico, Pam Williston. Priscilla Schroder, and Michele Robbins. Boys' Tennis The Boys' Tennis Team once again had a successful season. We finished up the year with 8 wins and 4 losses. This was due to the unending wisdom of Coach Gareau and the drafting of South High's first seeded player to the team. Kevin LaDuke, our fearless captain, along with Keith Kinch were the backbone Qf the team with a perfect record. Kirk Menan- son, our best player, was also dependable for a win. Michael Fields, our second ranked player, along with lay Conte, Dave Przygoda, and Garry Lowe made up our senior roster. Next year the team can look forward to another successful season. However, with the guidance of two new coaches, lim Pignataro and lim Mulcahy, the team proved their strength by pulling together and showing strong ded- ication. The first week of training overwhelmed many as they were conditioned through rigorous calisthenics. As the girls whined, moaned and sweated through workout after workout, one thing kept them going - the goal to achieve their personal best. Even though coaches Pig- nataro and Mulcahy remained unsung heroes, the track team knew that these were the best track coaches Grafton has had for awhile. Despite a losing season, the positive attitude of this close-knit team shone through. iam? - .11 5 ' , ,A 4 og QQ -Q. . ,. fwfrffc V. .mp L Q F., 4500! 'V . Q Q Ayn i I4 ,,,o11Y-gli, Axis-gf .ND vJ0 if GQ l .Q-KJ! -i ll Jw When did we decide to do this? Decide to work all year, stay up late, and spend countless evenings in moldy basements with typewriters in front of us? Why would someone want to do this? For some of us there was no choice, and for those fortunate or unfortunate to be our friends and acquaintances, the yearbook touched their lives also. The task is huge - to put together one hundred thirty-two pages of pictures, captions, and stories. The entire proiect takes a year to complete, and at the end of that year you learn to hate every aspect of a yearbook. Still, the staff works on. Through hardships like most deadlines or working on that last divider rather than studying for your En- glish mid-term, all of the time knowing you will be proud of what you finish. Of course a yearbook iust doesn't materialize. The work is complicated, and not everyone knows what to l S do. That's why the 1988 staff looked to a seminar put on by our publishers, Hunter Publishing Company. The backbone of our staff assembled at Westfield State College for four days of instruction about the production and marketing of a great yearbook. We also made contact with our yearbook representative Arnie Lohmann who for the next year would be our liaison with Hunter. Arnie helped us choose our cover and work our theme into our book. The Spirit of the lndian, Catch it . . . lf You Can is our theme, and with Arnie's help you will see the theme throughout the publication. Our experiences at Westfield proved in- formative, and more than prepared us for the work ahead. We left Westfield with great ideas No White Space! Captions For Pictures! and most importantly Plan Your Time Wisely! How were we to know the future? The color section was due in November, and where was the staff the night before the deadline? At Chris Trainor's house until one in the morning, but we finished. We went into our second deadline, early in February, vowing never to pull another allnighter, but to no avail. Mrs. Haseltine and her newest daughter Becky Bear put up with our antics for two weeks of these suicide mis- sions. And this would continue into Iune. Yes, we had graduated from high school, but not from the year- book. Maybe we weren't the most punctual staff, but we worked hard, and we have produced what we feel is the finest yearbook Grafton High has ever seen. The Staff: Co-Editors Karl Doane and Mark Hasel- tine, Michael Fields lphotographyl, Andrea Gilligan, leff McCann, Chris Trainor, Maureen Murphy, Missy Gagne, Mary lnman, Andy Pierce, Cindy Endriga. We'd like to extend a special thank-you to Mike Roseen, Channon Pichette, Cindy Clearwater, Tom Doane, Brian White, and Donna Girard. Significant Contri- butions - Mr. and Mrs. Trainor, Mrs. Haseltine, Mr. and Mrs. Doane, Gretchen Anderson, Valerie Sneade, Lisa Chiarenza and Todd Nicholson. Photos also by Larry Kenney and len Holmes. Advisor: Mrs. lulian, she bought the iunk food. .Q .4 V g.,.,, HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY Arnold Lohmann, Mdlord, MA ,,,- .-q. . , ads 4- I, 'nw 1'i W + 'N' ' ' i N ' .-31 u A x G ' ta mf' S , Q , .
